The world is too divided.

I’ve been looking at facebook recently, after the resurgence of posts about gun control, and I was happy to see some stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods finally decide to stop selling assault rifles in the wake of the most recent school shootings. I was at first incredibly happy to see that big companies were finally starting to stand up for our country’s children, but when i looked at the facebook comments, I couldn’t believe the amount of negativity this post received. So many people are boycotting Dick’s for looking out for our nation’s children and teenagers. It saddens me to think that so many people are more concerned about their rights to assault rifles than the safety of our nation and the lives of our citizens. And I know that while I myself would never own a gun, there are plenty of responsible gun owners out there who deeply care about our country, and who want to help eliminate gun violence. But when some gun owners cry out in rage in response to such a logical, respectful, well thought out letter like this one, it gives gun owners a bad name, and diminishes my hope for our nation.

This isn’t just a gun issue. 

We are an incredibly divided nation, and to simply disregard the opposing viewpoint and blame the opposite party not only solves nothing and impedes progress, but also builds hatred and resentment on both sides. Social media makes it clear that there is so much blind and ignorant hatred on both sides of the political spectrum whenever any issue arises in our country.

Political division has existed for hundreds of years, but for those of us who grew up with social media, we have seen, and been enveloped in, this hatred and conflict all our lives. As children and adolescents, we yearn for approval from our parents, peers, and society, so we are reluctant to say or do anything that would cause anyone to think less of us. Our attention spans are shorter now in such a fast moving world, and it’s easier to leave a mean angry comment with no substance than it is to have a conversation, so in the face of this, children growing up now have learned very quickly not to post anything controversial online, because they know they will be met with in criticism and anger instead of meaningful debate. This conditioning of children at an early stage of development to keep their opinions to themselves and avoid discussion is incredibly harmful because it causes them to feel isolated and alone in their ideas, and not only breeds resentment, but also influences them to only meaningfully talk to people with their same beliefs and mindset. This further divides our society at a base level, and reenforces the idea of “us” and “them” before we even reach adulthood. In addition, this constant exposure to hatred causes adolescents to feel a type of nihilism and resentment for the world, and in combination with the feeling of isolation caused by stifling opinions often leads to depression and more anger. A depressed adolescent doesn’t want to focus on political issues, or anything other than themselves for that matter, because they feel like they need to fix themselves first.

Is this the kind of society we want to live in? Where opinions are stifled and discussion is discouraged? Where hatred is more prevalent than love; where people focus more on themselves than helping others? No matter where you land on the political spectrum, we can all agree that our nation can and should be one that encourages love, hope, prosperity, and wellbeing for all people. Because that’s what we are. We’re people. No matter how much you disagree with someone’s views—no matter how desperately you want to fit them into a box and cast judgement upon them, they are a person capable of love and understanding, and they deserve to have their opinions heard.

I used the example of children because I believe that everyone can get behind the idea that we need to change the way we raise our nation. However, these same issues apply to adults. We need to set a better example. We need to show younger people that there IS hope. That there IS love in the world, and that we as a species are capable of having discussion more meaningful than an angry comment or a 280 character generalization.

In the same way that government has the power to help or do harm to it’s citizens, social media is a tool that has the power to do incredible societal damage or to change the world for the better. Social media has been around for far too long for us to still not have learned how to use it effectively as a tool for progress. We need to stop using it to put down people we disagree with, and start using it to connect with people and share ideas. We need to stop sharing biased news articles that fail to consider both sides of an issue, and we need to stop trying to provoke people with opposing viewpoints. We need to stop thinking as Democrats or Republicans, liberals or conservatives. We need to stop thinking as “us” and “them”. We need to start thinking as human beings who love one another and who are all working towards a common goal.

We need to change, and we need to do it now.

It’s not that hard.

Dick’s Sporting Goods has proven there are gun rights owners and merchants with a highly developed sense of consciousness and responsibility to the public. Here is a section of their press release noting that they’ve changed their sales policies regarding guns:

Beginning today, DICK’S Sporting Goods is committed to the following:

We will no longer sell assault-style rifles, also referred to as modern sporting rifles. We had already removed them from all DICK’S stores after the Sandy Hook massacre, but we will now remove them from sale at all 35 Field & Stream stores.

We will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age.

We will no longer sell high capacity magazines.

We never have and never will sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly.

At the same time, we implore our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform and pass the following regulations:

Ban assault-style firearms

Raise the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21

Ban high capacity magazines and bump stocks

Require universal background checks that include relevant mental health information and previous interactions with the law

Ensure a complete universal database of those banned from buying firearms

Close the private sale and gun show loophole that waives the necessity of background checks.

In Construction Simulator 2015 Gold Edition, you take the controls of 15 realistic construction machines made by Liebherr, Still, and MAN with high-quality 3D graphics. Welcome back to the Construction Simulator 2015 Playlist. Construction Simulator 2015 has become the Gold edition and we now have full controller support which means multiple controllers can be used to control our machines.

In Episode 30 we finally get our hands on the Liebherr LB 28 Rotary Drilling Rig and run through the tutorial for this awesome machine. We then move on to a large apartment build in the vertical skyline DLC which involves the majority of our fleet.
