What does fake amethyst cluster look like how we identified?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crystalwellness Online Store Australia: A fake amethyst cluster may have several visual cues that can help identify it. Here are some characteristics to look out for when determining if an amethyst cluster is genuine or fake:
Color: Natural amethyst clusters typically have a range of purple hues, from pale lavender to deep violet. Be wary of clusters that have an unnaturally vibrant or uniform color, as this may indicate that they are synthetic or artificially enhanced.
Transparency: Genuine amethyst clusters often have a transparent to translucent appearance, allowing you to see through the crystal formations. Fake amethyst clusters may lack this transparency, appearing cloudy or opaque instead.
Crystal Structure: Amethyst clusters are composed of individual crystals that grow together, forming a cluster-like structure. Authentic clusters will have distinct, well-formed crystals with defined terminations (tips) and various sizes. In contrast, fake amethyst clusters might have uniform or irregular crystal shapes, lacking the natural variations seen in genuine specimens.
Growth Patterns: Look closely at the growth patterns of the crystals within the cluster. Natural amethyst crystals typically grow in six-sided prismatic shapes with pyramid-like terminations. Fake clusters may have crystals that lack this natural growth pattern, appearing more irregular or uniform in shape.
Surface Texture: Real amethyst clusters often have a rough and uneven surface texture, with individual crystals exhibiting natural imperfections and irregularities. Fake clusters may have a perfectly smooth or overly polished surface, indicating artificial manipulation.
Weight and Density: While not easily determined visually, the weight and density of a cluster can provide additional clues. Authentic amethyst clusters are relatively heavy due to the presence of quartz, the mineral that makes up amethyst. Fake clusters made from materials like glass or resin may be noticeably lighter.
Price and Source: Unusually low prices or sellers with questionable reputations can also be indicators of a fake amethyst cluster. Genuine amethyst clusters are relatively valuable, and prices are generally reflective of their quality and rarity.
It's important to note that these characteristics should be considered in combination rather than individually. If you have doubts about the authenticity of an amethyst cluster, it is recommended to consult with an expert gemologist or visit a reputable gemstone dealer for further evaluation.

Meat Substitutes Market Overview, Cost Structure Analysis, Growth Opportunities
Characterized by the increasing demand for vegan, particularly plant-based products, the market for meat substitutes continues its growth at a healthy pace. A new study of Future Market Insights (FMI) foresees that global meat substitutes market will reach beyond US$ 5.6 Bn by 2022 end, further witnessing a notable 5.6% rise through the next seven years.
The thriving free-from trend will continue to shape consumption patterns within the meat substitutes category. Moreover, increasing demand for natural products, frequent product launches, and high awareness about functional benefits of free-from foods would be arguing well for the growth of meat substitutes market.
Impact of meat consumption such as high carbon footprint and the adverse changes in the climatic condition are factors that influence consumers to switch to meat substitutes. Soy-based food production is thus being thoroughly examined for its carbon emissions, including tofu and tempeh production in Indonesia, to compare their sustainable advantages over meat.
Key Takeaways – Meat Substitutes Market Study
Asia Pacific meat substitutes market offers huge potential in terms of value share. Following the success of products such as tofu as a meat/dairy substitute in Western countries, tempeh and seitan that originate in Asia, will also be favored as meat substitutes in the West.
Tofu that currently accounts for over 45% market share will remain the favored meat substitute. Tempeh is however set to exhibit a higher rate of consumption in the near future.
Manufacturers of meat substitutes are focusing on acquisitions.
For instance, Lightlife Foods, which produces vegan meat substitutes like sausages, tempeh, and burgers, was acquired by Maple Leaf Foods Inc., one of Canada’s largest meat processors, for US$ 140 million.
In 2017, food giant – Unilever Ltd. invested in Netherlands-based food project Plant Meat Matters. The project focuses on the production of all-vegan steak including meat substitutes for both restaurants and home cooks across the globe.
In 2018 Tyson Foods, which is considered as the largest meat processor in U.S., announced its investments in fake meat (meat substitutes).
To boost product sales and stand out from the breakneck competition, manufacturers must now intensify their focus on developing novel meat substitutes that closely mimic not only the taste and texture but also the savory aspects of meat.
Flexitarians to Push Export Opportunities for Manufacturers
Australia has shown tremendous potential for the growth of meat substitutes market. Over the last few years, several small-sized companies manufacturing meat substitutes have emerged in Eastern Australian regions such as Queensland and Victoria.
As country markets in a particular region tend to take market and demand cues from their neighbors, both Australia and New Zealand influence each other’s food cultures. The flexitarian trend amongst Kiwi consumers is on the rise, and consumers are increasingly demanding variants in vegan and meat substitutes. This presents an enormous opportunity for Australia to expand its export base of meat substitutes especially tempeh in New Zealand.

Week 32, 2020
Microsoft to continue discussions on potential TikTok purchase in the United States
Microsoft - August 2, 2020 - 2 min
Microsoft will move quickly to pursue discussions with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, in a matter of weeks, and in any event completing these discussions no later than September 15, 2020.
The TikTok saga continues this week. Apart from confirming the bizarre M&A situation between both companies, I had never seen a deadline for an acquisition publicly discussed.
Microsoft expands TikTok takeover ambitions to entire global business
Financial Times - August 6, 2020
Despite Microsoft's press release stating they intent to buy only TikTok's USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand business, it will make more sense from an operational sense to just purchase the whole company (except the China business).
Trump Targets WeChat and TikTok, in Sharp Escalation With China
The New York Times - August 7, 2020 - 8 min
USA companies have 45 days to cut all ties with both companies. This mean, among other things, the apps will need to be removed from the Android and iPhone app stores.
It's not clear what will happen with WeChat's parent company (Tencent) multiple investments in American companies.
Announcing the Expansion of the Clean Network to Safeguard America’s Assets
US Department of State - August 5, 2020 - 2 min
Really bizarre announced that sounds a lot like USA's version of China's "Great Firewall".
Instagram Reels launches globally in over 50 countries, including US
Techcrunch - August 5, 2020 - 5 min
Extremely well-timed release of Facebook's TikTok clone.
Snapchat to take on TikTok with a new music-powered feature rolling out this fall
Techcrunch - August 3, 2020 - 3 min
And it looks like Snapchat will launch their's in the fall.
‘Success Addicts’ Choose Being Special Over Being Happy
The Atlantic - July 30, 2020 - 8 min
I don't know who needs to hear this but:
The first step is an admission that as successful as you are, were, or hope to be in your life and work, you are not going to find true happiness on the hedonic treadmill of your professional life. You’ll find it in things that are deeply ordinary: enjoying a walk or a conversation with a loved one, instead of working that extra hour, for example.
The Battle to Invent the Automatic Rice Cooker
Atlas Obscura - July 31, 2020 - 11 min
All you wanted to know about the history of automatic rice cookers. It definitely convinced me to get one!
The rise, fall, and rise of the status pineapple
BBC News - August 2, 2020 - 9 min
A single fruit was worth thousands of pounds and often the same pineapple would be paraded from event to event until it eventually went rotten.

Buying surplus seats, made easy
Aviationgate
Even wanted to have your own Boeing 747 seats in the living room? Now you can (for a price)!
Facebook Signs Lease at Vornado’s Farley Building in Manhattan
Bloomberg - August 3, 2020 - 2 min
Facebook is leasing 730,000 square feet of office space... after announcing they estimate half of their employees will work from home in the next 10 years 🤷🏻‍♀️.
Blackstone to acquire Ancestry.com for $4.7 billion
Reuters - August 5, 2020 - 2 min
The biggest landlord in the world is acquiring the biggest DNA database in the world. I'm sure they'll only use it for good 🙄
And if you think you're safe because you've never used a DNA testing service, are you sure none of your relatives have?
Microsoft condemns Apple’s App Store policies
The Verge - August 6, 2020 - 3 min
Another week, another AppStore controversy. This time, Microsoft is discontinuing their xCloud streaming gaming service on iOS because Apple will not allow it in the AppStore.
Samsung announces the Galaxy Z Fold 2 with bigger screens and better cameras
The Verge - August 5, 2020 - 2 min
This is the real 1.0 product. The "HingeGate" was proof the previous Galaxy Fold was a 0.5 product at best. But I have to admit this new device is almost perfect in terms of design, Samsung hasn't cut any corners this time. We'll see how the software holds up.

Apple veteran Phil Schiller transitions to new ‘Fellow’ role, Greg Joswiak promoted to SVP of marketing

What if there was a way out of the privacy-violating hole a lot of tech companies have dug for themselves? A not-so-revolutionary idea could be the solution: context-based advertising. This is type of advertising, that's been in use by (physical) newspapers for centuries, could even convert better than privacy-invasive ads, and leave more revenue for publishers by cutting middlemen.

Game to Teach the CONCEPT of STAY – Dog Training
youtube
A game to teach the concept of stay until the release cue is given. This game is for those of you who ask their dog to sit stay and then after a few seconds the dog seems confused and either gets up or starts offering other behaviors he thinks might work. Often times dogs get up from a stay position because they do not quite yet grasp the concept that they should remain in position until they hear the release cue. Sometimes the learner can interpret no information as being wrong and so will start to change their behavior to see what might work. This very simple game teaches dogs the concept of waiting until the release is given. If the dog is too excited by the food on the plate, you can use lower value treats on the plate and higher value treats that you give to the dog for waiting to be released. You can also practice this game using toys as the reinforcer that the dog is released to. I don’t suggest playing this game with your dog’s dinner as it can cause your dog to eat faster than he normally would if the bowl was calmly put down in front of him while he was relaxed. Also the reason this game works, is because the dog is getting a high level of reinforcement while waiting to be released. If you just put something down and the dog only gets reinforced when he gets up to get it, as you can imagine it can cause the dog to get excited or over-aroused while waiting to finally be released. Meat Substitutes Market Overview, Cost Structure Analysis, Growth Opportunities And Forecast To 2032
Characterized by the increasing demand for vegan, particularly plant-based products, the market for meat substitutes continues its growth at a healthy pace.

Prediction Consensus: What Experts See Coming in 2020 Through the ages, humans have feared uncertainty. We’ve searched for clues in everything from entrails to tea leaves to the arrangement of heavenly bodies in the night sky. In the modern era, data and media are the new magic 8-ball. The jury is still out on whether we’ve gotten any better at anticipating the forces that will shape the coming year, but that certainly hasn’t stopped people from trying. Of the hundreds of forward-looking pieces of content published in the lead-up to 2020, how many of the expert predictions lined up? Was there a consensus on any particular trend, or were predictions all over the map? During the month of December we analyzed over 100 articles, whitepapers, and interviews to answer that question. While there was no firm consensus on where 2020 will take us, there were a few themes that appeared in multiple publications. Today’s graphic highlights these reappearing predictions, and below, we examine seven of them in more detail. The Promise and Controversy of 5G One technology that’s sure to capture the headlines in 2020 is 5G. Broadband speeds of over one gigabit per second will become a reality when 5G technology rolls out across the country, without the cable that currently connects most homes. This prediction is a slam dunk, as some carriers are already testing the technology in select neighborhoods around the United States. Experts also predict that a wave of 5G-enabled smartphone and IoT products will become commercially available in 2020. The wild card in this 5G story will be guessing which companies end up building out the new network. Huawei was in a strong position to lead the charge, but the company has been stonewalled in a number countries – most notably the United States, Australia, and Japan. Whether due to national security concerns or protectionism, Chinese companies may continue to face an uphill battle in Western markets. Fake News 2.0 While many predictions for 2020 were fueled by excitement for new technologies, there was one that was decidedly more ominous – the proliferation of deepfakes. Simply put, deepfakes are videos that harness artificial intelligence to create a convincing likeness of a real person. With the U.S. presidential election just around the corner, many experts fear that deepfakes are going to do serious damage, manipulating public opinion on both sides of the political spectrum. Unlike fake news, which often comes with obvious visual cues to help determine authenticity, even deepfakes created using free online tools are extremely convincing. If predictions come true, the lead-up to the U.S. election could be a wild ride. Consumerism in Flux The late 2010’s were a turbulent time for retail. The rise of ecommerce and shifting consumer preferences combined to cause a “retailpocalypse”, and many brands are still struggling to evolve their brick and mortar strategy to compete in an Amazon Prime world. Experts are predicting new evolutions for physical stores that are powered by technology instead of human employees. The incarnation of this approach that will likely garner the most attention will be the next wave of cashierless Amazon Go locations opening in cities around the country. Experts also predict that brands will mimic the example of Amazon’s Whole Foods, and incorporate online order pick-up locations within their physical stores. Increasingly, the line between ecommerce and traditional retail is blurring. The Cookie Begins to Crumble In 2019, approximately $330 billion was spent on digital advertising, but privacy regulations such as GDPR and the CCPA – California’s new privacy law – are causing massive disruption and upheaval in this industry. For many years, the humble internet cookie has done the heavy lifting in collecting your personal data from online activity. This data is what advertisers use to reach you as you scroll Instagram or read articles online. Already, changes to Safari and Firefox wiped out about 40% of all third-party cookies, and in a world where people need to physically click a button on each site to allow cookies, it’s unclear how viable the technology will be as privacy measures are enacted. The Call of the Picket Fence One of main predictions going into 2020 is that starter homes will be a leading category in new home builds. For millions of millennials around the country in the rental market, a starter home – the first residence a person or family can afford to purchase, often using a combination of savings and mortgage financing – will begin to look more appealing. Rent in American cities has been marching upward for nearly a decade, and the promise of more space and entry into the home ownership market may lure more of this generational cohort to the suburbs. Also on the topic of real estate, a few experts noted that even if there is an economic downturn in 2020, the housing market is unlikely to take a big hit. All Eyes on IPOs Despite experiencing a rough patch in 2019, SoftBank and its gargantuan Vision Fund will remain one of the most powerful forces in Silicon Valley this year. Masayoshi Son, Softbank’s enigmatic CEO, appears to have adopted a more pragmatic approach, citing a company’s “ability to turn a profit in the future” as a yardstick of evaluating the value of an investment. Experts predict that in light of the very public PR disasters of unicorns Uber and WeWork, investors will be much more skeptical of high-valuation IPOs. In 2020, more companies are predicted to opt for a direct listing to go public. What Goes Up? When the ball dropped to usher in 2019, market sentiment was leaning toward an impending recession. A year later, the economic expansion is still underway, and many experts now have a more positive outlook for 2020. The majority of predictions we analyzed foresaw a year of continued job growth and modest gains in the stock market. Here’s a look at S&P 500 end target predictions from some of Wall Street’s top strategists: The Elephant in the Oval One prediction nobody seemed particularly keen to make was on the result of the impending U.S. presidential election. Experts are likely happy to take a wait-and-see approach until the Democratic nominee is announced. Also looming in the back of people’s minds might be the memory of 2016, which was a powerful reminder that even predictions that seem like a sure thing don’t always pan out as expected. [Experts] can’t predict the markets with any useful consistency, any more than the gizzard squeezers could tell the Roman emperors when the Huns would attack. – Peter Lynch A note on methodology: To make sure we captured a robust cross section of predictions for the coming year, we spent the month of December tracking down and analyzing hundreds of articles, whitepapers, and interviews from respected sources. For this exercise, we chose to focus on four broad, interconnected themes – the economy, consumerism, real estate, and technology. In the end, we analyzed 100+ published pieces, and captured 150+ predictions. We focused on content from media publications in Comscore’s top 100, major banks and consultancies, and brands and agencies with high-quality thought leadership. In the end, we highlighted the 25 predictions that appeared the most often. Thank you! Given email address is already subscribed, thank you! Please provide a valid email address. 10 Best and Worst Tech Trends of 2019
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2019 was a mixed bag in terms of technology trends. On one hand, the consumers finally started really worrying about their data and big tech made some big promises to safeguard it, on the other, deepfakes went mainstream and are surprisingly each to create, becoming an even bigger cause of concern in the era of fake news and misinformation campaigns. 5G and foldable smartphones also generated a lot of buzz this year but both technologies are yet to reach the masses. Cloud gaming, streaming wars, TikTok, virtual assistants, and electric cars were some of other tech trends in 2019. So, here’s a quick look at the 10 best and worst tech trends of this year.
1. Foldable smartphones
After years of rumours, leaks, and company promises, foldable phones finally became a reality in 2019. Samsung and Huawei were two of the mainstream smartphone makers to unveil the first foldable smartphones. Despite their expected arrival in the first half of the year, both phones were delayed over quality concerns. While Samsung’s Galaxy Fold saga was much more public and got widespread attention, Huawei quietly postponed the launch of Mate X to work out the kinks.
The most exciting foldable smartphone of the year came from Motorola. Dubbed simply as Motorola Razr, the phone took design cues from its eponymous feature phone predecessor lineup that had arrived in 2004. Motorola Razr (2019) sports a clamshell design that seems to be getting a better reception but given it is yet to reach the hands of reviewers and consumers, a lot remains to be seen.
Samsung, Huawei, and Lenovo-owned Motorola aren’t the only smartphone makers working on foldable smartphones though. Pretty much every major smartphone company is busy developing their own foldable phones. We are hoping to see these in the coming year.
2. 5G
5G finally became a reality this year as multiple telecom operators across Europe, South Korea, Australia, China, and the US began offering the next-generation telecom network. While 5G is yet to become as mass market technology and will take at least a few years to reach that level but just the anticipation of various avenues that it will open and things that it will make possible kept everyone excited. It is expected to continue as a trending tech topic next year as well.
India is yet to get in the 5G groove as we are far from getting the new telecom technology. The government is yet to even conduct the auction to sell airwaves for 5G but hopefully we will see that happen in 2020.
3. Cloud gaming
Cloud gaming has been the buzzword in the gaming industry this year, but the idea is nearly a decade old. So, what changed in 2019? The arrival of big names like Google and Microsoft, coupled with advancements in cloud gaming technology. Nvidia’s GeForce Now, Sony’s PlayStation Now, and Parsec have been in the game for a few years now, but the technology was not considered truly pathbreaking or seamless enough due to issues like latency and slow Internet speeds. However, Google’s Stadia and Microsoft Project xCloud made things better by offloading the duties to faster and more capable servers.
What else? Well, it is no surprise that AAA titles usually require a powerful (and pricey) hardware, or a console, to run at a respectable frame rate with decent graphics output. This is where Stadia and Project xCloud deliver in heaps. You no longer need all that brawn. All you need is decently powerful smartphone, and you can play games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider without a hitch. We tried Devil May Cry 5, Tekken 7, and Gears 5 on an Android phone with Microsoft’s Project xCloud, and the experience was surprisingly good without any issues that could qualify as a deal-breaker. And that too, after using a VPN. Neither Stadia, nor Project xCloud are available in India, but the latter will arrive next year. And given the increasing popularity of smartphone gaming in India, cloud gaming has a huge potential to change the landscape of the whole industry.
4. Streaming wars
Although the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video have been around for some time, 2019 was the year when seemingly everyone decide to bring their own streaming services. US, expectedly, was front and centre of this streaming re-revolution but 2020 will most likely take the streaming wars globally.
Apple and Disney were the two biggest names to launch their video streaming services this year, but the likes of AT&T and Comcast are getting ready to roll out their own services next year. AT&T will bring the HBO Max and Comcast will launch Peacock. It remains to be seen if HBO Max and Peacock will launch outside the US.
5. TikTok
TikTok, as you might know, is a video-sharing social media platform that has become the talk of the town. But the app is nothing short of a phenomenon and has exploded in popularity, especially in India. TikTok has clocked a mind-bending 1.5 billion downloads worldwide on the Apple App Store and Google Play. India alone accounted for 277.6 million downloads this year. From signing NFL deals and roping in big names in the entertainment industry to making social media stars out of an average joe, TikTok has done it all.
TikTok, which lets users make lip sync clips and post reaction videos, employs AI to analyse users’ interests and preferences, which means, once the app learns your taste, it is hard to stop scrolling the feed. No app in the recent memory has given users of all ages as much creative freedom to go out and express themselves as TikTok. Seeing teenagers shooting TikTok videos at a park or a mall has become a commonplace now and has even landed people in trouble for making videos at their workplace. Such is the madness around TikTok. There have been concerns regarding privacy and spread of distasteful content, something that even led to a temporary ban, the popularity of TikTok simply ceases to contain. As for the videos shared on TikTok, well, they are a mix of genuinely funny and creative to extremely cringeworthy.
6. Virtual assistants
Virtual Assistants have existed for quite some time, but recent advancements have made them way more productive. With smart home devices like Amazon Echo, Google Home, smartwatches, and earbuds becoming commonplace, AI assistants are finding their way in our homes and day-to-day life at a much faster pace. And thanks to the developments in the field of machine learning and big data crunching, assistants are no longer limited to keyword-laden commands that actually made users sound robotic. But how smarter AI assistants got this year? Here’s an example, Google Assistant now supports continued conversation, can filter spam calls, answer calls on your behalf, book an appointment by talking just like a human, and do a lot more.
Asking a puck-sized speaker to play your jam from Spotify? Just say so. TVs, cars, and wearables are among the class of products that have become smarter, thanks to virtual assistants, and will continue to improve over the years to come. And with Google and Amazon opening their AI assistants to other companies, the price of smart home products with virtual assistants has drastically come down, and consequently, more accessible. Support for more Indian languages opened a whole new market avenue for virtual assistants in India this year. Market trends also suggest an impressive growth of virtual assistant applications at both personal and commercial scale, while forecasts point to a big surge in the years to come.
7. Electric cars
Tesla almost single-handedly brought electric cars to the forefront and made them chic riding on top of the concerns regarding the environment. 2019 saw nearly all big names in the industry announcing their respective EV plans, with many EVs making their way to the market too. A massive surge has been recorded in the uptake of electric cars in the west. But what about India? Well, electric cars are still a niche, but things changed this year. 2019 witnessed the launch of Hyundai Kona EV and Tata Tigor EV for consumers in India. Audi, Jaguar, Nissan, and Renault are among the other names that have promised to bring their electric cars to India next year.
The Indian government also took a proactive approach this year, announcing incentives for owning an EV, and is also giving a big push to the nascent electric car industry in India. The move is commendable, and the shift towards a future with EVs has several advantages for consumers and the world as a whole. But there are multiple challenges as well, such as a nearly non-existent charging infrastructure, bridging the supply-demand gap, limitations to grid capacity, battery performance woes, cost of ownership, and above all, establishing a new consumer behaviour towards vehicles.
8. Deepfakes
Before we discuss the impact of deepfakes this year, let’s first get acquainted with what actually it is. Deepfakes can broadly be defined as media, especially videos, in which the real person is replaced by another person’s digital avatar. Sounds impressive? It indeed is. But in a world where fake news has become a huge issue, deepfakes make the future look even more terrifying. Remember the video in which comedian Bill Hader turned into Tom Cruise, the one where Mark Zuckerberg was talking frankly like an actual human being, or the one that saw Jordan Peele deliver a public service announcement as Barack Obama? Some say deepfakes will bring back deceased movie stars, but that sounds like a tiny positive against a sea of ill-intentioned use case scenarios.
Deepfakes have advanced to a level that one can visually alter what a person is saying in a video by just typing a few words. Literally, by just substituting words. India was amazed by deepfakes as much as the rest of the world, and local deepfakes (albeit of lower quality) have already made their way online, with a key example being pornographic content featuring Indian celebs. The problem has even been acknowledged by India’s Electronics and Information Technology Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, but the measures outlined by him to counter the threat are simply inadequate. In a country where lies and deceit forwarded by WhatsApp can lead to mob violence, and where fact-checking as a practice is next to nil, deepfakes will only worsen the situation and create havoc.
9. Fibre broadband rollout in India
Reliance Jio had disrupted the Indian telecom market when it arrived in 2016, and everyone was expecting Jio Fiber to do the same. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, largely because everyone was expecting the company to offer rock-bottom prices. Jio Fiber plan prices turned out to be similar to what other Internet service providers (ISP) are currently providing, so the consumers didn’t line up to get the connections.
Although Jio Fiber is seemingly offering decent service, its fibre roll out has been botched to say the least. There is still no clarity in exactly which locations the Jio Fiber service is live, and the customers don’t hear back for weeks and months after putting their details in the online registrations.
Jio Fiber wasn’t the only provider to bet big on fibre in India this year. Other major ISPs, including ACT, Hathway, Airtel, and You Broadband, also expanded their coverage and brought freebies to entice consumers to move from slower broadband plans to faster fibre connections.
10. Data privacy concerns
With people spending more and more time online and using countless services that claim to make it easier for them to do things, data privacy gave consumers a lot to worry about this year. 2019 showed that it is futile to hope that platforms will keep our data safe and private. Data leaks, hacks, unprotected databases on random servers, and spying apps, including from nation states, are an unfortunate reality of these tech-filled times, and the outlook just seems so hopeless. Thankfully, after years of Facebook’s data privacy missteps, the big tech – Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook (yes, even Facebook) – claims that it is trying harder than ever to safeguard user data. The likes of Apple and Microsoft even called privacy a fundamental human right. Maybe all is not lost just yet, 2020 will show if big tech can follow through.

How Practice and Feedback Drive Deeper Learning
EDITOR’S NOTE: Because extended enterprise learning involves multiple disciplines, we sometimes ask other experts to share their insights with our readers. Today we feature skills development advice from Patti Shank, PhD.
Patti is widely recognized as an expert in learning science and instructional design. She is the author of multiple books, including the recent “Make It Learnable” series. This post is adapted from one of those books, Practice and Feedback for Deeper Learning.
  Why Practice Is Essential
When cultivating new skills, how heavily should we rely on practice? In recent years, numerous researchers have explored this question – from Anders Ericsson in Peak to Steve Rosenbaum and Jim Williams in Learning Paths. The answer is important for training professionals because it directly influences the way we design, develop, deliver and support adult learning experiences.
For example, in their analysis, Rosenbaum and Williams uncovered three practice-related workplace learning realities:
1) All too often, people who’ve completed training are actually less-than-proficient. They make costly mistakes and don’t perform at the desired level.
2) It takes a long time for new hires to become competent at performing core work tasks without needing much help or making many errors. This skill level is called the “independently productive” stage.
3) Training organizations can bridge this performance gap and add value by creating faster paths to independent productivity. Rosenbaum and Williams call this metric “time to proficiency.”

I would add a more fundamental observation. In my experience, too many training organizations don’t consider time to proficiency central to their purpose, so related strategies and techniques are overlooked.
Fortunately, however, learning sciences offer numerous ideas for improvement. For example, let’s look at how practice and feedback can help.
Connecting Practice with Performance
Many training researchers believe the difference between inadequate performers and independently productive performers is the right type and amount of practice. So, exactly how much practice do people need? A lot. Here are several reasons why:
Learning happens when we’re able to connect what we already know with what we are being taught. This isn’t a simple matter.
Human memory is slow and gets overloaded quickly. When our minds are overwhelmed, little or no additional learning can happen.
When we’re bombarded with a lot of information in a compressed timeframe, we tend to forget most of it.
Training methods that help people learn, maintain and remember knowledge and skills are underutilized. If you want better results, it’s important to understand and apply these techniques.
4 Keys to Effective Practice
Research tells us that the right type of practice is based on 4 characteristics:
Specific goals
The level of challenge must match current skills and prior knowledge
The amount of practice is sufficient to achieve identified goals
Appropriate feedback is part of the process
Let’s look more closely at each of these factors:
1) Is Practice Tied to Specific Goals?
Effective skills training starts with specific, measurable goals. Training goals come not from content, but from what people need to be able to do on the job.
Tumblr media
REPLAY THE WEBINAR NOW!
Training that isn’t based on job context is often just a content dump. And content dumps are a poor way to teach anything.
Unless we know how people want to use knowledge and skills, we’re unlikely to develop deep learning experiences that help them apply what they learn.
2) Does the Challenge Fit Prior Knowledge and Current Skill Level?
Learning is cumulative. It builds on what we already know. What we know and what we can do serve as a foundation for learning new things.
For example, in my book, I include examples from two-factor authentication training. If you’ve never had to authenticate your identity when trying to cash a check at an online bank, or if you’ve never used computer passwords at all, you’ll have a difficult time understanding this concept.
When people have little prior knowledge of a subject, training should start at a different point and the process should be different. In this case, we should focus first on clarifying what authentication means, why it matters, how to authenticate your identity and where you might need to use it.
Stories can also help because they can illustrate the concept and related consequences. For example, “Because Calum’s mom didn’t use two-factor authentication, her Social Security payments were stolen.”
To start, build practice around some basic ideas. In this case, it could be something like this: “Where might someone expect authentication to be required? The bank? The swimming pool? The grocery store?” Work up to practicing two-factor authentication.
3) Is the Amount of Practice Sufficient?
How much practice is adequate? While analyzing the job context (the first step in this process), it’s important to figure out (usually with stakeholders) the level of skill people should have when they complete training. How much practice will help them progress to that desired level of proficiency?
In addition, what happens after initial training is over? If new skills and knowledge are rarely used or reinforced, how will people maintain proficiency? Is this an adequate level of practice?
We must realize that if people don’t immediately use what they learn, it starts to decay. And we must help stakeholders understand why it’s essential to reinforce learning over time, so people retain skills proficiency.
4) Do You Offer Appropriate Feedback?
Feedback deserves special consideration. Here is why meaningful feedback makes such a difference.
According to John Hattie – a prominent educational researcher at the University of Melbourne, Australia – feedback is one of the most powerful ways to improve learning outcomes. But interestingly, research also finds that feedback can have a negative impact! This means that those of us who design and deliver instruction must understand which factors make feedback helpful or harmful.
How Feedback Can Help Support Learning
Feedback plays multiple roles during instruction, especially related to practice. For example, feedback can help you:
Confirm understanding when understanding is correct.
Correct mistakes or misconceptions when understanding is incorrect.
Close the gap between what people can do and what they should be able to do (learning objectives).
Let’s look closer at feedback factors that influence the effectiveness of feedback. This information comes largely from John Hattie, Valerie Shute (a professor of education at Florida State University) and Susanne Narciss (professor in the Department of Psychology at Technische Universität Dresde).
How Feedback Can Hurt Learning
Research has found that certain types of instructional feedback can lead to less effort and reduced learning. This includes:
Trivial goals
Praise
Rewards
Comparisons with others (such as rankings)
Threats
Discouragement
Multiple studies indicate that praise and rewards hinder intrinsic (internal) motivation. Therefore, it may be beneficial to avoid these techniques. Instead, instructional feedback should emphasize the benefits of learning and growth, encouraging individuals as they invest time and effort to develop knowledge and skills over time.
When people feel unsure or they make an error, feedback should help them see how to get back on track. Anxiety about the need to perform can make it harder for people to learn. Therefore, it’s important to focus on support and guidance, rather than performance at any cost.
Mapping Feedback to Prior Knowledge and Skill
The amount of skill and prior knowledge individuals bring to a learning experience greatly affect the kind of feedback we should offer. The table below lists major feedback issues in the left column. The corresponding columns to the right indicate how to handle issues at various levels on the skill and expertise continuum.
HOW TO FIT FEEDBACK TO EXISTING SKILL AND EXPERTISE
Issues Lower skill, less topic expertise  Higher skill, more topic expertise Type of feedback More directive More facilitative Amount of information     Specific More detail for deeper understanding Level Task-specific Cues, hints, details Support More support Less support Timing Immediate Time for mental processing
This table offers several takeaways for instructional design professionals. First, it’s important to understand the background of training participants before instruction begins. Second, tailoring feedback to an individual situation can be useful.
That’s why the first of 5 strategies in my book is Analyze Job Context, and the first of 26 tactics is Connect Learning Objectives to Job Tasks. Job tasks can be very different for novices than for those who bring some expertise to the table. Our challenge is to anticipate and appreciate those differences and then frame learning experiences, accordingly.
Strategies and Tactics That Drive Results
The table below identifies the various strategies and tactics that I explore in more depth throughout the book, Practice And Feedback For Deeper Learning.

Prepare to take your puppy to his/her selected elimination area within 30 minutes of each of these activities. In addition, although some puppies can control themselves through the entire night, most puppies need to eliminate every 3 to 4 hours during the daytime. With each passing month, you can expect your puppy to control themselves a little longer between elimination times. The puppy should be taken to his/her elimination area, given a word or two of verbal encouragement (e.g. “Hurry up!”) and as soon as elimination is completed, lavishly praised and patted. A few tasty food treats can also be given the first few times the puppy eliminates in the right spot, and then intermittently thereafter. This teaches the puppy the proper place to eliminate, and that elimination in that location is associated with rewards. Some puppies may learn to eliminate when they hear the cue words (eg. “Hurry up!”). Always go outdoors with your puppy to ensure that it has eliminated and so that rewards can be given immediately upon completion, and not when the dog comes back indoors (too late!). Your dog’s welfare needs ABC TV Education Life Membership Nomination Hello, I have a puppy that is 9 weeks old, we recieved him when he was 8 weeks. He is easy to train when it comes to: jump, sit, paw, and come here. The problem is that we cant get him to walk outside. When he sees the dog harness, he runs away to hus bed and pretends to sleep to avoid it. When we carry him all he does is whines and refuses to move and even pulling backwards as we just stan in the same spot. We have tried with dog treats and to encourage him with a ”come here” but he wont budge and the whines becomes louder. We live in sweden and we have alot of snow it is about -5 celcius. He wears a puppy sweater for him but he hates going outside. Specialized training[edit] Jump up ^ Spector, Morgan (3 January 2009). “Who Started Clicker Training for Dogs?”.
