The early 2000s saw the appropriation of the phrase mixtape to refer to free works released by hip hop artists over other artists beats. That trend seemed to die with the 2009 release of Lil Wayne’s “No Ceilings”. The trend of releasing music nonstop in order to keep ones self relevant to fans became the new normal. The effort it takes to release back to back Long Play (LP)s is astronomical and possibly beyond the ease of artists that entirely fund themselves. The popularity of the EP emerged not from laziness, but from necessity. Give the fans 2-7 songs to ruminate on while you work on the long project. It’s marketing at its best.

Enter Champaign, Illinois artist Chase Baby. A lyrical dynamo, Chase Baby (govt name Chase Scott). This blog knows very little about this artist at time of publication. All that matters is the music. As far as that goes Chase Baby is spectacular.

“See the truth of the matter is you have no idea what you are up against” begins the first track “murder” The electronic piano grabs the listener from the start and a drumroll precedes Chase who steps right into the track with a an easily understandable flow that begs to be rewinded over and over again. Chase goes easily between street references to drugs and partying to political references to Donald Trump. Chase references the trend of modern rappers and substance abuse by saying, “No rush to give up substance abuse, huh? You’re such a clutz. Stumbling over your words because you’re too fucked up”. Powerful.

“Lifelines” finds Chase on a rock inspired snare and cymbal driven beat that causes uncontrollable head bobbing. He flexes his versatility by using a rapid fire staccato flow interspersed with his normal, again easily understood flow. “I ain’t lucky I’m a leper that floats over pressure, using musicfor a mask so you couldn’t see the effort”. Wow. The metaphor and simile continues with featured artist AMS about whom nothing is known at this time. Inflecting a flow reminiscent of the mid 90s lo-fi type.

The EP moves along quickly to “sleep paralysis” the music reminds this blogger of electronic group Gorillaz. Chase rhymes his raucous yet effortless flow over a track about a metaphoric cabin fever he finds himself in. The story unfolds as he paints a picture of an insomniac that has racing thoughts about attempting to escape mediocrity. “Anxiety gone drive me crazy, and depression gonna kill me” he raps bringing the listener right into the track.

In the end a slow guitar and cryptic harmonica take that listener into a dark place while Chase spits what on the surface is a horror core style flow. However nothing could be further from the truth. “Turn The Page” has Chase again in an introspective mode offering his options on the game with such lines as “The naive bob and weave, are the intelligent cursed?” And “Birds of a feather try to copy me, apparently they parakeets”

In summation Dissociation EP is a straight banger. This blogger has heard it in its entirety more than 15 times. Chase refuses to bow to the lean flow that is so popular with this generation. He is unapologetic about his skills and makes no excuses for his brash and honest delivery. This publication gives Dissociation EP its highest award 3 out of 3 💯 emojis. Chase Baby is a rising star and this blog anxiously awaits his next project. 💯💯💯

Bruno Mars Accepts Album of the Year

He'd just won record of the year and song of the year, but Bruno Mars still had some words of wisdom left when he stepped to the stage to accept his third "Big Four" Grammy of the night.
