Why should some organizations start any of this journey?
Crisis
If the organization is in deep trouble, its profits are negative, Liabilities increasing, No demand for the product, etc.. we can consider that this particular organization is in Crisis.  The current scenario of COVID 19 puts many organizations in Crisis mode.  Many organizations thinking of adapting practices like Lean, 5S, Kaizen, etc.. to reduce their losses.
The problem with this driver is it works until the crisis ends. The later organization thinks about excellence only when another crisis hits!
Customer Demand
Many organizations depend on a few key customers and those Customers mandate organizations on certain Systems. For example, some customers may ask its suppliers to implement Lean or TPM or Six Sigma. In such cases, suppliers have no options other than accepting it.
The problem with this driver is, it works only to satisfy customers.  So TPM- Total Productive Maintenance becomes Total Paint Management (Painting the factory during customer visits) or Total Presentation Management. ISO 9001 only lies in papers. So the organization will never reap the benefit of the business excellence journey.
Competition
Our competitor is practicing Six Sigma, so we also should launch it!  Some organizations closely follow their competition and copy whatever they do. They are too much obsessed with competition. The biggest danger in this approach is, what works for competition may not work for us.

Six Sigma DMAIC- Process Improvement Methodology | Implementing Quality Initiatives in Organizations | Seven Steps Academy

Too many defects, internal complaints and external customer complaints never get resolved in organisations when it is not addressed in a scientific way.  Some of the issues get resolved and keep coming back time and again.
One of the proven and best solution to address these business challenges is a structured, systematic and data-driven approach that gets a cross-function team to focus to a common objective to discover root causes and implement solutions that sustain over a long time. That is Six Sigma DMAIC solution.
A typical Six Sigma Solution implementation starts with a focus on a Business challenge that is defined and scoped to a problem and goal statement. A cross-functional team is created and a charter is developed and approved by the business sponsor to ensure committed talent and other resources are available to execute the project.
In the next step all relevant metrics are defined which are derived from the problem/goal statement. To avoid any inaccuracies in base data collection either due to method or individuals who are engaged in it we conduct a method or a gage study. Finally, a data collection plan has created that detail out the list of data items to be collected, the frequency, the schedule and individuals who will actually collect data.
Once data is collected it is analysed to discover any relationship between the process input and output variables through tools like Fishbone Diagram, Pareto Charts, Failure Modes Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Hypothesis Tests. We exit the analysis phase after we have shortlisted the key root causes that are leading to high variability in Process result metrics.
In the improve phase the team brainstorms using techniques like Affinity diagrams, effort impact matrix, and Design of Experiments (DoE) to prioritize solutions which are implementable. Since any change to the current operational procedures may be met with challenges from the workforce usually the suggested changes are tried out for a limited period in a controlled setup called pilots to test the efficacy.
Once the solutions are found to be successful in the pilots a full-scale rollout is planned which includes all changes impacting systems, technology and workforce. This plan may also include tools and process training needed to be imparted to the workforce. The process input metrics are now monitored after implementing a system, process and people changes through control charts and standard operating procedures are developed for the sustainability of gains. All changes including project lessons learnt are documented. A project executive review is done to brief the sponsor and other stakeholders about business impact following which the team is rewarded and recognized for their effort and formal project closure is announced.

Need for 100% uptime of machines from the production department has never gone out of demand.  Day to day production needs are always to be met to meet delivery performance and revenue of the organisation.  One may ask if zero maintenance time is really possible. Imagining a condition when a flight is already in the air and it needs maintenance in mid air.

Any maintenance needs are to be performed when there is break time or when production is not scheduled.  Preventive maintenance time allocation in such cases becomes essential so that the machine performs to its fullest potential during its intended working hours.
Lean maintenance system works in combination of Total Productive maintenance, Reliability centred maintenance,  Lean methods and TQM as integrated system. The ultimate goal is to eliminate the need for maintenance during production or Zero maintenance time.

Priority category : 1
This can be classified into a critical category of maintenance.  In this category, if the machine gets into a minor stoppage or breakdown, it can disrupt the production resulting in serious implication to customers.

Identify critical components of the machine

Priority Category : 2
The criticality of components in this case is relatively lesser compared to Category -1.
Remaining solutions are still applicable as category 1 in this case too.
