Genuinely the only thing that would save this movie for me is if a 4th of the way into the movie the protagonists meet ""Steve"" and they go "Why does everything look so weird?" and Jack goes "Oh shit I forgot to turn my texture pack off" and clicks a button and its smooth, full Minecraft style animation for the rest of the movie.

Compared to everything we're gonna endure movie wise this upcoming year-

I think the Lilo and Stitch remake is gonna be the least offensive to the eyes.

Does it look amazing? Not really. Is it a movie that works as a live action adaptation? I think so, actually. Did they absolutely butcher some of the designs and castings? Maybe, but also some of these castings are wonderful!

But what I am appreciating is that it's not trying to be anything else or add some kind of new spin we don't need- It's just Lilo and Stitch. And honestly it's one of those rare instances where I feel like a live action remake actually works, because there's no real huge fantastical spectacle needed to be achieved like in Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, where the attempt to reach that spectacular whimsy via CGI is just poorly executed because you can't really achieve whimsy and stylization with realistic CGI.

There's not much stylization (with exception to the aliens and I probably could find my gripes on some of the design execution in that department) but it's just Kaua'i. It's just life on that island in that town, and it's just Lilo who finds this alien, Stitch. We're not really needing to achieve anything above that save for a few scenes where spacecraft and sci-fi settings are involved.

I could probably dive deeper into this when more footage or even the full movie comes out, but this is just my initial reaction to it all. The lighting is pleasant and it doesn't feel fake, Stitch fits into the settings quite nicely and the set designs are, in my opinion, spectacular. And I am loving this focus on composition, where elsewhere so often I see our subjects almost always smack in the middle of the screen in almost every shot.

I dunno, when compared to the upcoming Snow White remake, seeing this trailer was so much more lovely on the eyes. Will probably write more later again as more info comes out, and honestly the movie might not even be that good, but for the first time in a very long time, I am actually quite excited to see a Disney movie.

I've been sitting here for like an hour with this strong urge to just take a bus out of town and stare at running water in a river or something for hours and just sit in it or sitting under a waterfall or a lake and then I realized "Oh my god I want to go back when

Another thing that bothered me is how off the lighting looks

Notice how on the people- there only seems to be harsh highlights on the behind-side of their heads, but the rest of the lighting on their body is neutral

Meanwhile, the world and the mobs have that same harsh lighting but with harsh shadows to match- Like a harsh directional light would do

And then we have the reoccurring nonconsecutive lighting just in single shots where the people will have harsh side lighting and the world around them has direct overhead lighting- Same issue tho with the world and mobs having harsh shadows and the people not having that

What it looks like to me is the lighting on the actors was added in post production- edited in. This led me to believe that the movie was originally meant to be filmed completely in overhead lighting- like Minecraft is in irl. Obviously, the movie would look terrible if ti was like that but instead of noticing that earlier they just decided "eh we'll fix it in post" when it was too late, did a really sloppy job, and called it a day.

And I thought "no its a multi-million dollar studio, they wouldn't do that, that's ridiculous."

And then I found a shot where they forgot to fix that lighting issue.

Then again, it could be just general shitty lighting cuz this blue box thing should be casting blue light on the actors and it just doesn't they just put a blue glow filter directly on top of the box in post.

Cats are so weird cuz this little freak of nature will jump up on my office chair and just start wiggling, she'll leap and bound on her hind legs like a freak rabbit, she prefers being carried around like a sack of potatoes and she honks and quacks at any given moment but she also follows me everywhere and it reminds me "damn this thing lives in my house. This creature is mine."

I frequently have nightmares that prevent me from having a restful sleep, to the point I'm now on medication to prevent them- medication I forget to take from time to time. Yesterday was one of those times cuz that night I had a horrific nightmare where I was being hunted, then captured and then tortured and my captor was about to start dismembering me and I went "No. It's over." And she looked at me and was like "What???" And I say "The dream. It's over." And then I woke up it never occurred to me that I could just get up and leave????
