The Name of the Rose is the 1980 debut novel by Italian author Umberto Eco. It is a historical murder mystery set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327, and an intellectual mystery combining semiotics in fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies, and literary theory. The novel has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling books ever published. This book is one of my best in my list of 100 to read, every time I read it or see the film adaptation my mind flies into the mysterious and magical world of the book, fantastic fly. "Those who do not read will have lived only one life at the age of 70: their own! The reader will have lived 5,000 years: there was when Cain killed Abel, when Renzo married Lucia, when Leopardi admired the infinite ... because reading is an immortality backwards."
