77 The Pyrates adapted from the novel by George Macdonald Fraser by Justin Fletcher & Richard Ragsdale for Defiant Theatre. So after ten shows at Strawdog, I was told I needed to work somewhere else. I had been friends with the Defiant folk from the time I moved to Chicago, but had never auditioned for them before. And this opportunity presented itself. This show was insane in almost all the best ways. A 32 person cast, with fights involving all 32 people with swords and whatever else we could find, set to songs by Cheap Trick and Adam Ant. Projections! Sea Battles! People swinging on ropes from one ship to another! I myself had several incredible fights (choreographed by David Woolley and Geoff Coates) one of which was a blindfold fight, another was fighting a procession of folks with Katherine Ripley hung over my shoulder and I got to fight a giant octopus on stage. I played Col. Blood, the ne'er do well frenemy to the stalwart Avery. There was a great gag where I was buried up to my neck in the sand as the tide was coming in, the tide was blue fabric, but once it went over my head, they had a bucket of water and sponge to pour over my head, it was a great sight gag that got built on because every time the wave receded, there was some sea creature left behind, culminating in a starfish being attached to my face. In the fight set to Cheap Trick, Geoff Coates got knocked off the above, while Avery (JB Waterman) went into a dream sequence which ended with Coates rising from the darkness and continuing the fight. Made possible by myself and either Mr. Ragsdale or Mr. Skvarla pressing Mr. Coates up on to the above by a means off a 2x4 on our shoulders. Sadly, this was the penultimate Defiant show, they would close after the next Clockwork Orange. I felt honored that I got to play with them at least once before they shut down. #retrospective #2004 #thepyrates #georgemacdonaldfraser #richardragsdale #justinfletcher #colblood #stiffcompetition #octopodes #davidwoolley #geoffcoates #standanddeliver (at Chicago, Illinois) https://www.instagram.com/p/B60xdYqp2qR/?igshid=5gkdsyodpn87
