Build It  - They Will Use It!
Built-in cabinetry, such as bookshelves and buffets, is a beautiful and practical way to define a room’s function and make storage architecturally interesting. The American Arts & Crafts movement really defined the potential of built-in furniture, and to this day these features are part of architecture in large and small ways. Best of all - no dust bunnies!
The buffet/wet bar pictured above is in a 1950’s traditional house I have listed at 2216 Davis Drive in Burlingame (why am I picturing a holiday-themed cookie and cocoa bar?). Here are 3 more creative ideas for built-ins:
* Window Seat - Any small space under a window can be transformed into a nook for reading and day dreaming. Or put one in the kitchen for family meals and late-night Monopoly games.
* Mudroom Bench - Stylish and oh-so-functional, this stopping spot inside the front door keeps coats and gear organized.
* Knee Wall Storage - If your house has an attic office, bedroom, or bonus room, you might have a short wall supporting the roof rafters. A knee wall often has unused space behind it which is perfect for “dresser drawers” that close flush with the wall.
I see great examples of built-in furniture in the houses I view weekly along the SF Peninsula. I’d love to show you some!
