SIR GEOFFREY DE HAVILLAND FLYING SCHOLARSHIP WINNER 2021

Prior to the summer of 2021 I applied to this scholarship offered by the Cambridge Flying group (No. 22 Sqn RFS) and the Worshipful Company of Cochmakers and Coach Harnesses, which is the 72nd livery company of London. I applied, and when I was on holiday I got the email saying I had made it down from 24 people who applied to the 6 selected for an interview at Cambridge Airport. I went on the interviews, but I had prepared hard, researched the livery company, it’s history, what they do, their sole purpose and what they were trying to achieve by awarding this scholarship. I practiced interview questions and skills, and was helped by a fellow warbird pilot Sam Worthington, TUI Pilot, Trustee and Spitfire pilot. I had even done some simulator practice on the DH82 Tigermoth and made sure to understand the cockpit, its functions and layout, so I was ready. The interviews were structured so that 3 of us went out to see the aircraft in the morning, whilst the others had interviews and then in the afternoon we would switch. I had my interview at 1pm, so I was first candidate of the afternoon batch, so in the morning I go to know the instructors, fellow students and went out to see the tiger itslef, and how wonderful was it looking there in that hanger and shame it was a bad weather day otherwise they would’ve taken us on an experience flight, but nonetheless I loved it!! I had my interview, first minute and a half I was nervous, the interview lasted 40 minutes so I had plenty of time to compose myself, answer all questions and perform to standards, and as the interview progressed it turned out to be more and more a dicussion just because the panel was so interested in my future aspirations as a pilot and what I plan for my career in the future. I performed, and eagerly had to wait 1 week to hear the news I had been selected, and in God’s timing, first objective of getting selected was accomplished, now it was getting suited up, helmet fitted and being ready for some blue skies flying!!
