Some years back, a friend of mine who happens to be a #libertarian , tried to convince me of the importance of growing one’s own food - in order that they might feed themselves should the unthinkable occur. I tried to help him understand that this particular food-sourcing program wasn’t a viable option for the majority of Americans due to space constraints, wildlife 🐀, climate/geography, etc.; but he assured me that everyone could do it if they weren’t lazy. Well, it takes a big man to admit they’re wrong, & I was wrong. Today, @margomuschamp discovered 2 small ears of corn on a stalk from one of the seeds I “planted” when feeding squirrels 🐿 & birds 🐦. I used to have trouble w/ the cats & the squirrels partaking in that wonderful world of leisure, uninvited. But ever since Lando Calrissian took up residence in the basement, my stock of Old Mil has been decreasing at a relatively stable rate. Lando, much like myself, enjoys some leisure on occasion. He prefers gambling, while I enjoy the horseless #polo matches that have been a staple of those long summer nights in Hammerfest (a town I grew to love while working on a new marketing campaign for Sámi coffee (it’s so delicious). Lando has promised to teach me when to hold ‘em & when to fold ‘em & in return, I’m introducing him to krumkake, reindeer cheese & the most fun one can have north of latitude 70°. The girls have gotten lots of Country time recently (not the lemonade). We checked out #farmtechdays - Bella & I rode in the new @johndeere 4 track & Shay & Grampa took a spin in a 7R 350, both pretty sweet. Grandma showed the girls how to be gentle w/ the horses & make them feel safe (Grandma is an animal whisperer). We pet a lot of cows & horses, - the #scottishhighlandcattle are my favorite. A couple weeks later, we visited the Washington County Fair. There were lots of animals to inspect/pet, pony rides, camel rides, & #goats - those goats were on the lookout for unattended snacks. Spring in Minnesota brings to mind slush-filled days w/ freezing/refreezing nights, the use of 1 metric shit-ton of window washer fluid, each week, the occasional semi-warm breeze, a constant verbal assault directed at the universe & Mother Nature for allowing such inanity to occur in the 1st place, funnel clouds that can top 150 mph, & eventually, flowers. Other places, further South, & West, have spring flowers & tropical air masses, & tornadoes & the like but they can’t appreciate the warm-up the way #minnesotans do; they can’t understand the way a lilac bush, popping out buds, provides a sense of hope & relief, an ability to exhale all the cold, passive-aggressive, hot-dish laden breath that you’ve kept inside, bottled, like an old port that’s way past its prime - & it’s not really worried about breathing, but enjoys the fresh air just the same. The dogwoods & crabapple trees, the phlox & the dandelions, azaleas & everything else, they bring out our collective warmth & a lot of fun fashion choices. And w/ warmer weather we venture out to new places & meet new friends. A round barn, a rarity; a friendly cat, not so rare, & Wood Ducks having breakfast at #diamondlkgardens - patio seating. The sidewalk art, created by the #diamondlkgirls , is always bright & cheery, just like me 😐 as are last year’s milkweed pods - the stoic & solemn husks keep watch over creatures big & small. It may not snow again until September or October, but it might. Either way, the flowers are back & life abounds. Jack No Ka Òi! 20 years ago, The Once & Future King 👑 of Deerpark Drive, Robinson Street & Diamond Lake, was a newborn kitten. Jack’s life has been 1 adventure after another, & he just rolls w/ it. He’s California cool, Baltimore badass & Minnesota Nicer (he’s not passive aggressive). The most winsome in Windsor, prodigious in Paris, vociferous in Venice, & astute in Aspen. He’s a role model for cats, rats, hogs & dogs everywhere & has never met a stranger. Jack makes #themostinterestingmanintheworld feel like a slouch.
