Tokyo Mew Mew Ole is a lot of fun
I had no idea this existed until a few hours ago, but apparently in 2019 Nakayoshi serialized a spinoff of the classic magical girl series Tokyo Mew Mew that just wrapped up. The pitch? This time, they're all boys. Yeah, that's fucking right: here come the Mew Mew boys!!
I just read volume 1, and it was pretty fun! I like that there is sort of an unnecessarily detailed explanation for everything from the catchphrases (they come from deep within the boys' genes; it's involuntary) to the inciting incident (a scientific experiment gone awry happens to aim endangered animal beams at the hottest guys in the vicinity) and the wonderfully themed powers (so far we have a cat that cuts, a dolphin with waterbending powers, a parrot that can attack you with flowers, and a Komodo dragon with gravity manipulation abilities). The designs are all very fun, the characters have distinct and defined personalities, and the whole thing has a very lighthearted tone.
It's very silly, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. There's an element of self-aware commentary here as they comment on the various magical girl tropes and ridiculous developments, but it's never overbearing and mostly just pretty amusing. I like the setup a lot actually.
Obviously, the best part of this manga are the designs though. I mean jesus fucking christ
Like seriously there doesn't need to be much happening this right here is reason enough to read this. Outstanding work everyone
