Diego Luna by Victor Ayala
These photos have already been posted by @semisweetshadow and @diegothemenace but I wanted to have them together in one post. Also, I uploaded the biggest size I could get (which was already good enough, but you know I am a sucker for HQs!)
This also made me come across some originals that I'll be posting separately :)

The Birth of Charles II of Spain Fanart
Tumblr media
Warning: This story contains some artistic license
The Queen's pregnancy was approaching its end and had become a matter of utmost importance. The future of the Monarchy depended on this event. On Sunday, November 6, everything seemed to be ready. The doctors and physicians were on alert; the Queen's confessor was near her, and the Chief Steward of her Household was carefully reviewing the arrangement of the items in the birth chamber. To guarantee the success of the event, all the holy relics that were in the Palace and others brought from El Escorial and other places had been arranged in order. There was the staff of Saint Dominic of Silos that the Order of Saint Dominic had brought, the ribbon of Saint John Ortega, from the Order of the Hieronymites; the incorrupt bodies of Saint Isidore and Saint Diego de Alcalá; the image of the Virgin of Solitude and the one so venerated by the royal family, Our Lady of Atocha. It is not easy to find a space so holy and sacred. Everything, then, was ready, the things of the earth arranged to implore God's pleasure. At noon, after a frugal lunch, Philip IV retired to his chambers. At the same time, While eating, Queen Mariana suddenly felt intense pain in her abdomen, realizing that she was about to give birth. She quickly left the table and hurried to the Tower Chamber.
King Philip went straight to his study while looking at Prospero’s portraits. He entered his study, sat down, and began to write to answer the last letter of Sor Maria de Agreda. He wrote with a deep sigh and tears in his eyes.
“ With the long illness of my son, and the continuous help I was giving in his room, I have not answered your letter of the last month...I assure you that what has most exhausted me, more than this loss, is to see clearly that I have vexed God and he sent this punishment to castigate my sins...
(The king reminisces his cherished memories with Felipe Prospero while writing this letter)
Help me as a friend with your prayers to placate God’s just anger and beg Our Lord that, as he took my son from me, He may make his light shine on the Queen, whose confinement we await hourly, and give her good health and guard what is to be born, if his will, for otherwise I do not wish it...
Back in the Tower Chamber, Queen Mariana cries in agony as she is delivering her baby. The royal midwife Ines Ayala told Queen Mariana to push harder. Five other doctors were present at this event in case of emergency. One of those doctors was Dr Bravo. While the Queen was giving birth, the courtiers and Infanta Margarita looked on.
Ah, Sor Maria, If I had succeeded in following your teachings, perhaps I would not have found myself thus. Pray to our Lord that he may open his eyes, that I may perform his holy will in all things... There is nothing new in the English situation. I, thank God am in good health...
At this point, King Philip was interrupted by a courtier who delivered the news and told the events occurring in the Tower Chamber. King Philip was anxious about the future that lay within a few hours. He prayed heavily to God, asking him to deliver him a son. All could imagine the impatience of the Royal Court of Madrid and Europe, waiting for an outcome of this event. As hours passed, Queen Mariana was still in labor, and the doctors argued over natural forms of treatment. They were anxious as the Queen and the child’s life was at stake.
Dr. Bravo proposed a theory: In the past, Queen Mariana had difficult experiences giving birth to her children. At the birth of Maria Ambrosia, Felipe Prospero, and Fernando Tomas, The Queen had terrible epileptic seizures, and the infants died or lived for a short time. On the other hand, at the birth of Infanta Margarita, the only child to survive, The Queen had been perfectly well. Now why was this? The reason is simple: Just before Infanta Margarita was born, Queen Mariana had suffered several violent nosebleeds. Therefore, what she requires now is to be bled.
Some doctors disagreed, warning that the proposed action could endanger the Queen and her child. Concerned, Queen Mariana asked the doctors if there were any alternative procedures. The doctors offered different opinions, while Dr. Bravo defended his proposal. As the debate continued, Mariana went into labor with the assistance of Ines Ayala. The infant cries and is alive. The birth of the infant brought joy to all. King Philip became a father once again. When the courtier informed King Philip of the birth, he was overjoyed and immediately visited the tower chamber to see his newborn son. King Philip joyfully held his son and proudly showed him to the Queen and his daughter. When the courtier informed King Philip of the birth, he was delighted and immediately visited the tower chamber to see his newborn son. King Philip joyfully held his newborn son and showed him to the Queen and his daughter.

The Gran Chaco is South America’s second-largest forest after the Amazon; its 100m hectares (247m acres) stretch across Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and Bolivia. It is also one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world – host to more than 3,400 species of plants, 500 birds, 150 mammals, 120 reptiles and 100 amphibians.
But as agricultural and logging industries have encroached on the territory, it has also become one of the most deforested places on Earth.
About 7m hectares of native forests were lost in Argentina between 1998 and 2023, according to official data, about 80% of which was in the Gran Chaco. New figures from Greenpeace show that nearly 150,000 hectares (370,000 acres) were destroyed in the forest in 2024 – a 10% increase from the previous year.
Natay Collet, a park ranger and technician, has witnessed the destruction first hand. “First they chop down the trees of value to sell, then they come for the rest with machines and chains. Afterwards, they set fire to the land, killing everything. All that is left is a desert,” she says.
Collet says deforestation has happened since “the first colonists came” but that for the past 15 years “companies have come with everything they have”. “There is no hour of rest, it happens all hours, every day,” she says, adding that better technology and chainsaws have accelerated the process.
Juan Diego Ayala, an environmental researcher and member of the collective Somos Monte, explains how much deforestation goes under the radar. “It’s called pinprick land grabs: instead of deforesting thousands of hectares at a time, they will take under 500 hectares at a time,” he says. “It is difficult to detect until it’s too late. It looks like nothing is happening, but everything is happening.”
The Gran Chaco is home to a wide range of wildlife, including maned wolves, ocelots, tapirs, armadillos, capybaras and howler monkeys. With their habitat shrinking, many species are now at risk, biologists warn.
The jaguar is one of the most vulnerable species, with conservationists estimating its range in Argentina has shrunk by more than 95% in the past 150 years. Officials believe there are only about 200 jaguars left in Argentina, and fewer than 20 in the Gran Chaco.
“The loss of habitat is the biggest problem of all. The animals lose their shelter, their prey, they are forced to migrate,” says Alicia Delgado, a biologist at Rewilding Argentina. “When the land is no longer connected – when it is split by roads and farms – animals have to move through populated areas. People get scared and hunt them.”
Collet explains that howler monkeys, which rarely leave the canopies, need tree connectivity to find resources and survive. She also worries about the giant armadillo, which is thought to breed only every three years. “A major change in the ecosystem can have a huge impact,” she says.
Deforestation worsens the climate crisis, as carbon stored by trees is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Nuhem says it has had a more immediate impact on the climate, too. “Now we have intense heat, the wind is stronger, the rainfall is scarce and the land is dry,” she says. Droughts have become longer, and floods more extreme, she adds.
The felling of trees continues despite the creation of Argentina’s Forest Law in 2007, which was introduced in response to “the expansion of the agricultural frontier”. The state now requires provincial governments to decide which areas should be protected, set limits on deforestation and devote resources to conservation. But Hernán Giardini, coordinator of Greenpeace’s forest campaign, says, “the law is not enough, and our justice system is not working to defend the forest”.
The deforestation also continues despite a 2019 ruling by the Chaco courts ordering its suspension.
“Deforestation has been prohibited in Chaco since 2019 – the courts banned it, but it is never enforced,” says Enrique Viale, an environmental lawyer and president of the Argentine Association of Environmental Lawyers.
A recently retired police officer tells the Guardian that once, when he was in the process of confiscating trucks filled with illegally cut trees, he received a call from a government official. “He told me to let the men – and the trees and trucks – go,” he says. “Whenever I tried to do the right thing, to stop the deforestation, I was punished, while those that committed the crimes walked free.”
Nuhem says that local people attempting to prevent illegal deforestation have faced threats and violence for more than a decade.
In 2008, one of Nuhem’s colleagues was kidnapped by a group of men.
“They told her to stop reporting the deforestation, and that, if not, she would be killed. They beat her and raped her,” Nuhem says. “She left the group and the village. The case was never solved and a lot of people helping to report the deforestation fell silent.”
Collet says illegal deforestation is treated with impunity because “the government sees Chaco as a resource to be used and exploited”. “The only thing the government sees in the forest is money,” she says.
Some of the main products of the Chaco province are timber, soya beans, beef, cotton and tannins.
Viale says the state and businesses justify deforestation by saying it leads to economic development. “But Chaco is one of the provinces with the most deforestation in Argentina, and also one of the poorest,” he says. “Everyone mentions progress, but the bosses only enrich themselves.”
Viale and his team have filed a criminal complaint about the deforestation, which is with Argentine prosecutors to investigate. “It is the first time in Chaco we have had a case of this magnitude,” Viale says. “We want to break the cycle of impunity.”
But the Indigenous people, who consider the trees to be gods, say time is running out. “Deforestation is wiping out our cultural practices, our traditional knowledge, like our medicine and our language,” says Nuhem. “We are becoming weak, just like the forest.”

isabela is the second oldest child and firstborn daughter of the four ayala siblings. they lost their father due to an accident while she was still very young, so the only providers she’d ever really known were her mother and her older brother santiago. unfortunately, his form of providing involved illegal activities, and she was too young at first to know any better. while not the only introvert of her family, isabela was perhaps the most reserved. she didn’t often make friends outside of her siblings, and also enjoyed alone time learning to play the piano at the community center, reading at the library, and journaling. at 11, reality came crashing in, ending her childhood early. her brother had almost landed himself in prison, and she realized just how much he’d been putting at risk to help out while she was off in her head. isabela tried to learn to pull her own weight by walking dogs, babysitting, etc. eventually, when santiago began to focus on his music career, still sending home checks, isabela tried to step up even more with helping raise her siblings. rather level-headed, she did well in school and was able to pick up a decent amount of money tutoring along with trying to help her sisters with their homework. her grades got her an acceptance to usc (university of southern california) and a few other great schools, but unfortunately not one with a large enough scholarship. not wanting anyone to think her foolish for applying (or worse, guilty that it was too expensive), isabela told everyone she’d decided to go to the local community college of her own volition to stay close to home. there, she got an associate’s degree and a stable job as an accounting clerk. she wasn’t passionate about it, but she was passionate about keeping her family together, even as they continued to move further and further out of reach. when santiago told her about hiraeth, she truly didn’t believe him and was rather dismissive at first. didn’t he know she didn’t have time to talk about ridiculous notions of things like other worlds or dimensions? was it drugs? eventually, however, when carmen left too, isabela became torn. there was no bright future for her here (probably not in hiraeth either), but who else would provide for their mother? the only thing that convinced her was their own mother encouraging her to follow her siblings along, reminding her that isabela needed to watch out for them. after nearly half a year of indecision, isabela finally gave in. what’s one visit, simply to check in on them? it’s not like she has to stay.
THEME SONGS
one by sleeping at last - hold on for a minute, 'cause i believe that we can fix this over time, that every imperfection is a lie, or at least an interruption. now hold on, let me finish. no, i'm not saying perfect exists in this life, but we'll only know for certain if we try.
friend by benson boone - i've been on my own, tryin' to carry this alone. only so much weight my back could take, i'm sinking like a stone and now i see my face in a broken windowpane. i could use someone to help me pick up the pieces that remain. -- i need a friend, i need a friend, somebody, when the world starts cavin' in. i need a hand, i need a friend, i'm trying to remember what it's like to be young and alive.
new year's day by taylor swift - don't read the last page, but i stay when you're lost, and i'm scared, and you're turning away. i want your midnights, but i'll be cleaning up bottles with you on new year's day. you squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi, i can tell that it's gonna be a long road. i'll be there if you're the toast of the town, babe, or if you strike out and you're crawling home. don't read the last page, but i stay when it's hard, or it's wrong, or we're making mistakes.
landslide by fleetwood mac - oh, mirror in the sky, what is love? can the child within my heart rise above? can i sail through the changin' ocean tides? can i handle the seasons of my life? well, i've been 'fraid of changin', 'cause i've built my life around you.
quiet magic by sleeping last - love invisible enough to be divine, safe enough to take for granted so much of the time, -- quiet magic hidden in plain sight. our faces nearly rhyme, heartbeats synchronize. three generations of gentle love echo in your eyes, a soft-spoken voice under endless noise instantly recognized.
Her Pinterest board is here.
Her Spotify playlist is here.

Anti-Jack Sparrow Tower Selfie
Grumbling as I failed to break in and climb the 1774 watchtower in the compound of the 1879 Iglesia Parròquial-Santuario de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora de Dauis (Parish Sanctuary of the Assumption of Our Lady) in the Población of the Municipality of Dauis, Province of Bohol.
The Dauis Church was established by the Spanish Jesuit missionaries, Diego de Ayala and José Gregorio, who arrived in the fishing town in 1697. The missionaries named the village after the “dawi” act of fish taking on the bait, which was commonly used by the local fishermen. The missionaries dedicated the new church to the mystery of the Assumption of Our Lady.
The current church began construction in 1863 under the supervision of Fr. Julio Saldaña (1835-1909) OAR, and was completed in 1879.
In 2004, the church was declared as a diocesan shrine of its patroness, Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion. And in 2022, the centuries old image of Our Lady of the Assumption was granted a canonical coronation.
In 2013, the façade of the Dauis Church was destroyed by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. It was later rebuilt in 2017.
This photo was taken in 2025, during my first “official Summer vacation” around the island/province of Bohol.

The Birth of Charles II of Spain
Tumblr media
Supposed portrait of Charles II as a newborn. Stirling Maxwell Collection (Pollock House, Glasgow), attributed to Martínez del Mazo.
Carlos José, Charles II of Spain, was born on Sunday, November 6, 1661. The news spread quickly throughout the Royal Palace in Madrid, releasing enormous tension barely contained until then. Joy filled all the rooms, as Queen Mariana's pregnancy had come to a happy conclusion. Given the challenges of the previous days and months, this was a significant relief. Just five days earlier, on November 1, 1661, the Feast of All Saints, the crown prince of the monarchy, the beloved and cherished Philip Próspero, had tragically died. His death was a profound loss for Philip IV and his wife, who was in an advanced stage of pregnancy at the time. With the passing of the young prince, the Catholic Monarchy once again faced a lack of direct male heirs, instilling a sense of pessimism and fatalism throughout the Palace and across the cities and kingdoms of the realm. The death of Don Felipe Próspero, who was only four years old, struck the heart of the aged King like a dagger, leading him to believe, with certainty, that God had abandoned him.
Queen Mariana was deeply distressed. She understood her royal husband's feelings well. From her earliest childhood, she had been educated about the reasons for the state and was aware of what dynastic inheritance meant, so she empathized with her husband's dual pain—both providential and political. Additionally, as a mother who had already lost several children, she felt overwhelmed by the painful fate that the Almighty had in store for her, a fate that undoubtedly shaped her harsh and rigid character. The death of Philip Prospero, who was taken from life too soon, was just the latest tragedy in a long series of losses. Indeed, Mariana had endured a profoundly tragic maternal experience.
For all the above reasons, in the days following the death of Philip Prospero, the Queen's pregnancy, which was nearing its end, became a matter of first importance.
It is difficult to find a space so holy and sacred. Everything, then, was ready, the things of the earth arranged in order to implore God's pleasure.
At noon, after a frugal lunch, Philip IV retired to his chambers. At the same time, the Queen felt discomfort and went to her room. The midwife, Doña Inés de Ayala, and the chief physician of the Royal Chamber, Don Andrés Ordóñez, both witnesses of the birth of Doña Mariana in Vienna in 1634, were now assisting her in her sixth birth, the most anticipated of all. Mariana of Austria was then 27 years old. The chronicles say that there was no setback. It was one o'clock in the afternoon on that Sunday, the day of San Leonardo, when, according to the Gazette, “
a very handsome prince with large features, a large head, black hair, and somewhat swollen flesh saw the light of this world .” It was, of course, a very favorable comment, but soon rumors to the contrary spread through the gossip columns of the Villa and Court. That birth was received with joy. At three in the afternoon, when the news had already spread to all corners of the Monarchy and Europe, a sober and elegantly dressed Philip IV in black velvet, left his chamber and, “
accompanied by the Nuncio, the Grand Masters and the Ambassadors ”, headed towards the Palace Chapel in full courtly etiquette. There, the royal procession, presided over by the monarch, sang a solemn Te Deum, thus beginning the festivities that, in honor of the future Charles II, occupied the entire month of November 1661.
