I noticed you have tagged posts ableist language on posts which I haven’t noticed the ableist language in. Sometimes in further reflection I can see why you have added that tag, and sometimes not. If you’ve ever got the time/inclination, could you explain some of the more nuanced ableist language usages?

I know many may feel I take a pretty radical stance, but i've studied enough linguistics to know how powerful the words we use can be, even when we don't intend it in that way. so I use the ableist language tag for when people are not being ableist but are using language which reinforces ableism. this can get a bit tricky as the people who are the subjects of ableist terms may often identify with or reclaim those terms, like calling someone a cripple is ableist, but many people self-identify as cripples, like the cripple punk movement.

I think they generally fall in three categories:

intelligence: stupid, idiot, moron, etc. intelligence and iq are not real, they're eugenicist myths and insulting people's intelligence only feeds these myths and serves the ruling class. build solidarity by seeing everyone as your equal. there is no moral value to having received a better or worse education than someone else. also many of these terms come directly from eugenics, such as their classifications of types or degrees of autism.

diagnoses: psycho, dumb, schizo, bipolar etc. these are real health conditions and i shouldn't have to explain why using them as insults is deeply offensive.

saneism: insane, crazy, mad, etc. the sane/insane dichotomy, if it was ever helpful, which I doubt, has been outdated for generations. there is no medical diagnosis of 'insane', there are hundreds of mental health conditions and an infinite number of combinations which we are barely beginning to understand. but none of them have or convey a moral value. using them as insults only stigmatizes those of us who have them, to the benefit of the ruling class and detriment of solidarity.

even if you are skeptical or attached to this language I'd challenge you to try not using it. you'll find it improves your vocabulary and your speaking and writing skills. not just that but it will deepen how you think about your fellow humans.

okay serious question

I dislike the police and I avoid dealing with them as much as possible, but where can I go for something that might need an authority figure?

the situation that prompted this question is that I was driving late at night and there was another person who was driving under the influence ahead of me who was swerving across lanes and swiped the guardrail a few times. and if it was a situation with like, loud neighbors or something where I can talk to them myself to try to de-escalate without involving the cops, I'd do that. but this person driving almost hit me and another person driving, and it's a safety issue.

so how do you resolve that without involving the police?

yeah I can envision lots of ways that could be dealt with in an anarchist or post-police society, but how to deal with it in the here and now without police or a community-defense group is a challenge. you could try to drive behind or in front flashing your highbeams and honking in the hope that pull over or to warn other drivers if they don't, but you may not be in a position to put yourself at risk.

maybe others here have better ideas.

there's already a thread floating around that we've reblogged a few times and should be findable under our #anarchy 101 tag, but long answer short the same way people get it now, just without billionaires and politicians restricting who can access it. insulin is incredibly cheap and easy to make, it was invented/discovered a hundred years ago, and the patent famously sold for a buck because it 'belonged to the world'.

I saw the post you reblogged with “fuck Vaush tho” and wanted to know exactly what the problem with him is. I haven’t watched him much but he seems pretty alright overall? A bit more abrasive than I’d like but not to the level of “fuck this guy”

i avoid all the breadtuber drama where possible but vaush claims to be anarchist while being pro-markets, pro-voting, and pro-policing: he’s helped cultivate a whole new breed of reddit anarcho-liberal. that and all the edgelordiness, sexual harassment, racist language etc. i think any good he might do bringing people into anarchism is outweighed by giving them a skewed impression of anarchism.

I feel like “intelligence is a myth” is over-simplified. We as individuals all have different strengths in different areas (different intelligences), and as a group we all come together to form something greater than any individual could be - while I may be lacking in creativity and my friend may be lacking in language skills and my other friend may be lacking in math skills, when we all come together we make an amazing team that can handle anything. The “myth” of intelligence is that only one type of intelligence matters, and the general individualism stuff that goes along with capitalism. We all think and process differently, which is a good thing. It makes us stronger as a group.
