313: Squeeze // Singles: 45's and Under

Singles: 45's and Under Squeeze 1982, A&M
Easy day at the office reviewing Squeeze’s first compilation, Singles: 45’s and Under. I’ve always thought of Squeeze as the smoothest, most traditionally pop of the British New Wavers. They’re like Costello without the pickled sarcasm; XTC without the berserk resistance to medication; Dave Edmunds with the ability to develop an original thought. As such, in my experience they’ve been a far easier sell to new fans than any of those guys because they simply sound cool and good as hell without making every song a litmus test of how much you can bear Tifford and Dilbrook’s star personas. Even on the Cool for Cats-era stuff when they’re drenching their music in Devo-levels of freaky squelch (see “Goodbye Girl”), there’s always a sturdy classicism to what they do, a sense of craft that a McCartney or a Bacharach would instantly respect, a lightness of melody that hovers over you all day after a single listen. While the countrified “Labelled with Love” has always struck me as a hair too precious, every other song is an indispensable gem, with “Pulling Muscles From a Shell,” “Take Me, I’m Yours,” and “Up the Junction” (the proto “Common People”?) standing out among the power poppers. Squeeze’s post-East Side Story years are a notoriously mixed bag, but you’d have to have a real bone-deep aversion to blue eyed soul or sophistipop for the languid charms of “Black Coffee in Bed” to elude you. Really, has anybody ever done this kind of thing better without feeling the need to beat you over the head with their genius?

John Cale producing music? Can you guess he has a combative streak there as well? Given the way he and Lou Reed got along one cannot be shocked to hear about the treatment he gave to Squeeze. I do understand what he wanted, i.e. he planned to take them away from their comfort zone, yet he forgot he dealt with their debut. Sure, he also worked on many musicians' introductions as we shall see, but he could've understood all musicians need to establish at least a semblance of an identity with their entree. Squeeze still looked for theirs then, though we can admit Cale probably provided them with a couple of possibilities for their follow-ups. Moreover, I must laugh over the fact he produced a record by a group that took the name from the most controversial Velvet Underground album.

New Squeeze interview on YouTube, and it’s a great one. This looks like it might be mid-late 2000s, when Glenn and Chris were just reforming and starting to consistently work together again after their separation of several years. Highlights beneath the cut!
About their formal music training at 23:25, Glenn, I have LOTS of questions… I’m glad the second music teacher was a better one!
At 29:15, the interviewer asks Chris if he sits down at a computer to type lyrics, or still uses pen and paper, and Chris jokes about trying to write with his terrible handwriting, and at 29:35, Glenn absolutely loses it laughing, then later jokes about how when Chris first started using a computer, he would get multiple copies of lyrics with the slightest differences in wording.
40:15 the influence of drugs and old habits on writing in the earlier days has been going on, and after explaining how he didn’t get high or drunk to write, Chris supposes writing while hungover could have a lot to do with the mood of some of his lyrics, and being in his extended recovery, jokes “if [he] could buy the hangover without the drinking […] that would be brilliant” -and then he and Glenn both bust up, because practically nobody else would ever wish for such a thing, and most would wish for the other way around. They look so happy in that moment, especially Chris, and you can tell they had missed that about each other during their time apart. There’s some more hard laughter from Glenn in the exchange that follows.
40:59 After all the joking around, things take a somber turn discussing “Some Fantastic Place”, and the backstory isn’t as far as what I’ve heard the lost BBC4 Take Me I’m Yours Documentary goes (I’m still trying to track it down to no avail), but it’s a bit further than most I’ve seen.
46:30 It’s not so often you get to hear the sentimental talk from Glenn as opposed to Chris about their relationship. It still isn’t to the level Chris can’t help going to, but it’s very sweet.

Squeeze’s Chris Difford Set for “Very Necessary and Long-overdue” Surgery
Squeeze’s Chris Difford will miss some of the band’s summer shows to undergo “very necessary and long-overdue surgery” for an undisclosed health issue.
“I have been struggling with ongoing health issues which have become increasingly problematic over the last year and reached a climatic trip to casualty over a fortnight ago,” he said in a statement announcing his upcoming absences.
Difford plans to return to the group “after taking time out to recover.” His co-founding and songwriting partner Glenn Tilbrook and the rest of the band will be patiently waiting.
“Health issues always come first, so we wish Chris all the best and send much love and good wishes to him,” Tilbrook said in a statement.
“In the spirit of positivity, we will double and re-double our efforts to do the best shows we can in Chris’ absence, and look forward to his safe return to our welcoming bosom.”

"Tempted" is a song by British band Squeeze. Written by the group's founding members, Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford, it features lyrics inspired by Difford's experiences on an American tour and an arrangement inspired by the Temptations. "Tempted" is one of only a few Squeeze songs with Paul Carrack as lead vocalist, at the suggestion of producer Elvis Costello.
"Tempted" was released as the second single from their fourth album, East Side Story, in 1981. It was only a moderate chart hit at the time, reaching #41 in the UK, #45 in Canada, and #49 in the US; however, it has since become one of the band's most famous songs, appearing in movies, TV shows, video games, and commercials. It has also seen critical acclaim and has become a mainstay of the band's live setlist, often being sung by Tilbrook.
