🤍💛SHBS CARES AWARENESS💛🤍 August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Awareness. (SMA) is disease that robs people of physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, and impacting their ability to walk, eat, and breathe. What causes SMA? Chromosome 5 SMA is caused by a deficiency of a motor neuron protein called SMN, for “survival of motor neuron.” This protein, is necessary for normal motor neuron function. 1 in 8,000 are born with the disease. With your help, we can change the course of SMA. Some ways to participate are: Organize a Candle Lighting. Each year, the SMA community lights candles to remember those who have passed away from SMA, and to honor those who are living with SMA. This occurs at sunset on the second Saturday of August. This year’s candle lighting will take place on August 8, 2020. Change your profile picture to include the official Cure SMA Twibbon banner for SMA Awareness Month. Become an advocate. Advocacy is critical in advancing SMA-related policies, and the voices of affected individuals are incredibly important and can have.
