My DIY ripstop worked!
Inspired by ripstop fabric, and by the idea of reinforcing stuff before it breaks, I machine-sewed a little grid along the inside part of the jeans where they always wear out first.
Tonight I was venting about an awful group project to a friend and I draped myself dramatically over the couch and felt something rip a little.
Tumblr media
Look! The rips stayed inside their little squares. Look how small it is! Look how easy it'll be to mend!
Ok actually since the fabric's been fading and the thread now looks really dark, I'll probably unpick the grid and sew it again. I'll do thread a shade lighter than the fabric currently is so it'll still match as fading continues.

Creating the Ultimate DIY Travel Toiletry Bag That Will Save You Money and Space
Tumblr media
Introduction: The Importance of a Good Toiletry Bag
The Benefits of a Travel Toiletry Bag
When it comes to traveling, a good toiletry bag can make a world of difference. Not only does it keep your essentials organized and within reach, but it also saves you time and effort when packing and unpacking. A good toiletry bag can also help you save money and space by preventing overpacking and allowing you to easily identify what you already have.
According to a recent survey, travelers who use a toiletry bag report feeling more organized and less stressed, which leads to a more enjoyable trip overall.
With the right toiletry bag at your disposal, you'll never have to worry about rummaging through your suitcase for a toothbrush or forgetting your favorite shampoo at home again.
What to Look for in a Travel Toiletry Bag
When shopping for a travel toiletry bag, there are a few key features to keep in mind:
Durability: A good toiletry bag should be made of sturdy, waterproof materials that can withstand the wear and tear of travel.
Size: The size of your toiletry bag will depend on your personal needs, but it should be big enough to hold your essentials without taking up too much space in your luggage.
Compartments: Look for a toiletry bag with multiple compartments and pockets, so you can easily organize your products and avoid leaks and spills.
Portability: If you plan on carrying your toiletry bag in your carry-on or daypack, choose a lightweight and compact design that won't weigh you down.
By keeping these factors in mind, you can find a toiletry bag that fits your needs and makes your travels more enjoyable.
DIY travel toiletry bag: How to Make Your Own
If you can't find the perfect toiletry bag for your needs, or if you want to save money and exercise your creativity, you can make your own. Here's how:
Choose your materials: Look for sturdy and waterproof fabrics like nylon, canvas, or ripstop.
Cut your fabric into the desired shape for the bag, leaving extra material for seams.
Sew the pieces together, leaving space for zippers and compartments.
Add zippers, pockets, and other features as desired. You can use existing patterns or design your own.
Attach a handle or strap for easy carrying.
Test your bag to make sure it can withstand the weight of your toiletries and other essentials.
Making your own toiletry bag is a fun and rewarding project that can save you money and give you a personalized and unique travel accessory.
There are also many online tutorials and patterns available for those who want to try their hand at sewing but aren't sure where to start.
Conclusion: Why a Good Toiletry Bag is a Must-Have for Travelers
Whether you're a frequent traveler or an occasional vacationer, a good toiletry bag should be at the top of your packing list. By keeping your essentials organized, preventing leaks and spills, and saving space and money, a toiletry bag can make your travels more enjoyable and stress-free.
And if you can't find the perfect toiletry bag, or if you want to save money and have fun, you can always make your own. With a little creativity and some basic sewing skills, you can create a personalized and durable toiletry bag that will be your faithful companion on all your adventures.

It is a good idea to compare products from different jewelry
Jump rings are used in a variety of different projects and are extremely helpful. The main purpose of these rings is to connect two things together. They become very handy, particularly when one of the items to be connected has a closed loop connector. A jump ring can be opened and closed very easy if you keep the following steps in mind. The wrong way is to pull the rings apart straight which will distort the circular shape and may bring stress to the metal causing it to break. Always use a needle nose plier or tweezers to open a jump ring. Hold one side of the jump ring between your index finger and thumb such that you can see through the hole.
Then through plier or tweezers hold the other side and slightly pull it toward yourself to open it enough to let your desired component pass through. Once you are done, with the help of plier or tweezers push the ring back in place. There are numerous kinds of jump rings out of which mostly are circular, however, they come in different gauges, material, and finish. Some of the most common shapes of jump rings include round, donut, flat round, square, etc.Jump rings can be easily found from the jewelry finding supplies store from where you usually buy other stuff for your DIY or crafting projects. You can choose the metal color, finish, shape, and material used for making these jump rings to find the rings fulfilling your crafting needs.Jewelry finding supplies stores have popped all over the World Wide Web lately due to the ever increasing demand of handmade jewelry businesses requirements and other crafting hobbies people have adopted.
It is a good idea to compare products from different jewelry finding supplies stores in terms of quality and pricing when ordering an item. Bigger stores with a huge variety of items are normally cheap and are also helpful for you since you can order a number of things together and will help you save the separate shipping charges which would have incurred pvc ripstop fabrics for sale if you would have bought items from different jewelry finding supplies store. Some people confuse jump rings with split rings. The main difference is that the jump rings are a single looped ring that has a slight cut that is pulled open and close to join two components, whereas the split rings are just like keychain rings and has multiple wraps. However, the jump rings are considered to be sturdier and used much more widely for connecting components.

23 Best Weekender And Travel Bags For Women 2022
With a comfortable black cotton shoulder strap and various sizes, there's no limit to the things you can carry. The bags also come in a variety of sizes, so you can select the size you’re looking for. You will find small bags, large bags, and oversized bags. If you just want to carry your clothes to the beach, a small canvas bag is more appropriate while you can use the heavy canvas bag to carry laundry. At ToteBagFactory, we know how to make and bring you quality tote bags at a great price. Whatever your needs are, we’re sure you can find a bag that suits you in our $5 tote bags category.
These ripstop nylon Baggu bags come in a ton of different patterns, all equally as fun.
If you’d like to fold the t-shirt in half you can cut both sleeves at once so that they are identical.
Available in lightweight cotton and premium all-over-printed options.
This easy spring fashioned tote bag is made from a couple of tea towels. You can of course, use fabric if you prefer but tea towels make it easy because they’re already cut. You would think it would be a bit more complicated given the number of pockets but it’s a really easy tote bag project and you can finish this one up in just a few hours. If you need a tote bag that’s easy to make and has pockets for everything, this six pocket bag is the perfect project. Right next to this pocket, you’ll find a smaller zipped pocket for storing a laptop or tablet. On the inside of the bag’s zippered top, you’ll also find two mesh zipper pockets to help keep a few smaller items or accessories organized. Inside the main compartment, you’ll find enough storage to carry eight tennis racquets or a ton of extra gear. I’m a fan of the padded separator inside the bag to separate your equipment for better organization. You can carry the bag by hand using the two straps at the top of the bag. However, they also double as backpack straps if you’re looking for an easier way to transport your gear. A.BCH is a Melbourne-based, Australian-made fashion label for individuals who care about garment provenance. It utilises renewable, organic, and recycled materials. Find the range in sizes XS-XL, or customise to fit you. Raven + Lily supports local female artisans to create handmade jewellery, bags, and homewares. This US brand's products are eco-friendly and empower communities through fair wages, healthcare, and education. These totes really do come together in 20 minutes a piece which makes them a great, quick, way to add a little fun and excitement into the dull end of winter months. For the lining of the bag, I used regular fabric yardage. We have a new niece in our family and I am so excited! Excited and happy for my brother and his wife, but also SO excited to have an excuse to sew some baby items again!! https://www.metal-archives.com/users/mmarkwalker Not only does it have a pocket that fits most 13” laptops, it has additional pockets for a tablet, phone, all your cords, and then some. I consider leather bags to be an investment piece, because they're expected to last a long time and work with any outfit you wear. Much like your favorite jewelry, the right bag can completely change the look and feel of your outfit.
Grocery Bags
It also means that the ink will not fade or crack, giving extra longevity to your custom tote bags. With your personalized tote bags ready for printing, the next step is to start selling. Go from the office to the ocean with this floral number that’s an equally efficient laptop bag as it is a beach tote.
Loewe Shell Small Leather
Large, beautifully personalized, and made of canvas! You can make this your next DIY project and use it for future projects. You just need a bit of material and the instructions are really very easy. Of course, you could do it all in one pattern, but it will draw much more attention if you contrast just a bit. This one would make a wonderful mini diaper bag, too. It’s unlined and has french seams that give it a great neat look with no seams showing. The racquet compartment can fit two racquets, and it’s the only one on my list that’s insulated to protect your strings from heat. The Baseline tennis backpack from Vessel is a high-end tennis backpack that offers just about everything I look for in this style bag. A backpack is practical whether you play tennis or not, so it’s no surprise more companies are offering them than any other kind of bag. At the bottom of the bag, you’ll find a dedicated shoe compartment, which is great for keeping shoes as well as any dirty gear separate. Uniquely, this bag includes a laptop compartment, which students and coaches might appreciate. A larger ventilated compartment at the top of the bag shares space with the center section, which provides easy entry for a pair of shoes or other dirty gear you want to keep separate. See all of the projects, tutorials and free designs in The Great Maker Show and Tell Challenge! There is one for each day of the 25 Days of Christmas! This is my gift to you for the tremendous support, enthusiasm, and love you’ve shown to me and my little blog over the past two years. To “open” a gift, hover over the day’s image and click the download icon. Once you have mastered a simple, two-layer iron on vinyl design like this, you’re ready to try something more complicated like my multi-layer “Good Things” design.

Today's sewing was about fixing up some basics!
Tumblr media
First up, I put DIY ripstop in the important part of these new work shorts. (Yes they're solid dark black; I had to fuss with lighting to make this visible.) They're going to be replacing a pair that is too light-colored and shows marks where I sweat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next project was this Frankenstein shirt!
A few weeks ago, I dumpster-dove for some sealed bags of clothing. One keeper was a dark grey tank top with some lime green heathering and trim around the arms and neck. It's a men's XXL, so a size too long. I cut it shorter and kept the hem intact.
I also have a plain black shirt that I thrifted before realizing quite how short it was. I tried it, but as a busty woman working a cargo job, I didn't like everyone seeing most of my torso when I had to reach overhead.
Fortunately, both of these hems were almost exactly the same size. And it's jersey, so you can fudge it a little and no one will ever know. I used the smocking stitch on my machine because it's the only reliable stretch stitch that my lovely 1983 Kenmore can produce. It rumples a little, so I'll wash it to make it relax and then live with however it turns out. Success!

DIY External Beavertail Pouch for Backpack
Tumblr media
A handmade water-resistant lightweight external pocket that doubles as a beavertail flap for even more storage.
As a student, one of my most used items is my backpack, which in my case is the DA Ghost Mk II, of Polish origin. One of the reasons why I purchased this pack was due to its inclusion of a detachable admin pouch on its front panel, secured by buckles and shock cord. This front pouch can function as what is called a beavertail, allowing items to be stored in the space between the pouch and the main bag, which can be expanded and then cinched down by means of the shock cord on the sides.
Tumblr media
The stock Ghost Mk II backpack.
While I loved this feature of the pack when I needed to stow a jacket, unfortunately the pouch did add quite a bit of bulk to the already heavy pack. Not to mention, in the days when I did not use the beavertail functionality, I found the ~20L capacity of the main pack to be quite adequate enough. The typical response is to ditch the pouch and save some weight. After all, everyone else seems to get along fine without a beavertail on their bag! I certainly tried, but boy did I miss that extra storage when I needed it. This put me at an impasse--I wanted to eat the cake and have it too.
But with a bit of creativity and a sewing machine, I could, and I did. In anticipation of undertaking miscellaneous sewing projects such as this after discovering the MYOG (Make Your Own Gear) community, I already had all the materials I needed to create the perfect solution to my first world problem. What I had fashioned for myself is a simple, low-profile pouch that not only provides me with just enough extra organization, but can act as a beavertail as effectively as the original admin pouch.
Tumblr media
The beavertail pouch in its usual configuration, flat against the pack.
Tumblr media
The pouch with shock cord loosened, showing its storage capacity.
Tumblr media
The beavertail used to stow a rolled up hoodie between itself and the pack.
The design is simple, but very effective. Measuring approximately 20 cm x 20 cm, the pouch features a single strip of 1" PALS webbing behind the zipper, bartacked for strength. This strip allows me to affix a variety of tools and belongings such as keys and a flashlight, without lying loose at the bottom of the pouch.
Tumblr media
A small selection of items that can be stored, both on the PALS webbing or simply loose.
The pouch intentionally does not feature any gussets to allow for it to lay flat neatly under lateral tension (from the shock cord). Inserted into the sides stitches are lightweight flexible stainless steel rods which help the pouch keep shape; their ends are rounded to prevent and damage to the fabric. All thread used was heavy-duty bonded polyester thread, which is not only mechanically sound, but is also resistant to rot, unlike cotton thread. Three 3/4" webbing loops on each side match with the same on my pack for the shock cord to attach; two 1" loops on the bottom connect to webbing on my pack by means of C-clips. All loops are bartacked for extra reinforcement.
Tumblr media
Detail of bottom connection points. Note that the left webbing loop has been detached to show the C-clip attachment point.
In terms of materials, I used Dimension Polyant's 210 Denier VX-21 ultralight sailcoth, which beyond being fantastically easy to sew, offers quite a few advantages. A laminate of DWR-coated nylon face fabric, diamond-shaped ripstop matrix, PET film, and a bright white tafetta backing, this technical fabric offers true waterproofness (with rain beading off), tear resistance, and very respectable abrasion resistance all at an astonishing low weight. Additionally, since it is a laminate, the hems do not fray, with the white backing providing great visibility inside the pouch, thereby mitigating the need for bias tape or any lining fabric.
Zippers are #3 Aquaguard urethane-impregnated YYK zippers, which are designed to be mounted in the reverse coil orientation (flat side of the zipper facing out). While not truly waterproof, water can only get in if the zipper is submerged, so rain is no problem. A paracord zipper toggle ending in a double snake knot aids clumsy hands.
Tumblr media
Detail of the Aquaguard YKK zipper, with paracord toggle.
Overall, my pouch is much lighter than the original, and plenty functional enough for my purposes. So far it has withstood daily abuse since it was made at the end of 2018, so I am certainly satisfied with my workmanship. Despite the straightforward design of the pouch, it was nonetheless a valuable learning experience for me to build up my soft goods skills. What makes soft goods to be so appealing for me as a hobby is how different it is from "traditional" engineering design; with fabric, everything has to be planned and executed both backwards and inside-out. The satisfaction of inverting an unrecognizable bunch of textile into a useable and functional piece of kit is incredibly rewarding, which will no doubt be something I will continue to pursue in my free time.
Footnote: Most of my supplies come from RipstopByTheRoll, MEC, and Hudson Supplies.

Rain Jackets, Reviewed (Part Two)
Spring isn’t known for its outerwear, but it’s useful to have a rain coat or jacket this time of year. Something lightweight and comfortable, but will also keep you dry during those intermittent spring showers. On Monday, we covered five options I think are particularly useful -- especially if you need something to go with casualwear. Today, we cover four more.
Ten C Fishtail Parka (Japanese Jersey)
The problem with a lot of rain jackets is that they’re short. Unless you’re going with a trench coat or mac -- which can be too dressy or conservative for some people -- most outerwear designs will leave your legs exposed. Not a big deal in a light shower, but a problem if you’re walking through downpour.
If you want something causal, but long, try a fishtail parka. The coat’s name comes from the unique “tail” at the back of the garment, which has two fins that you can tie around your legs for insulation. The oversized design goes great with everything from textured sweaters to tailored sport coats. In the 1960s, British Mods used to raid military surplus stores for fishtail parkas they could wear over suits.
Mine is from Ten C, an Italian outerwear company that mixes classic military design with techwear fabrics. The use a bunch of different materials, but they’re most known for their water-resistant, nylon-polyester jersey (known as their Original Japanese Jersey, or OJJ). It’s somewhat stiff, which helps give their garments shape, and patinas nicely.
Ten C is dearly expensive, but like with anything nowadays, you can find them for less-than-retail if you scour eBay. Timberland also used the same fabric last season for an M-65 jacket, which I thought looked pretty good. It was on sale last season for $200, but no longer looks to be available.
The other option is to get a regular fishtail parka and just treat it with a DWR spray (see Nikwax or Revivex, which are mentioned in our last post). Original military versions fit huge, but you can find more street-friendly versions from brands such as J. Crew, Sandro, NN07, and Alpha Industries (although the last one is a bit short).
Sierra Designs Short Parka (60/ 40 Cotton-Nylon)
A great piece of spring outerwear for that “rugged Ivy” look -- to be paired with five-pocket cords, LL Bean boots, and Shetland sweaters. Sierra Designs makes one of my favorites, which they call their short parka. As a reasonably lightweight piece of outerwear, it’s comfortable enough for springtime, while also giving you plenty of room to layer as needed. Maybe the only limitation: mountain parkas often look best with somewhat traditional looking clothes (basically that rugged Ivy look or the sort of things you’d find at Ralph Lauren). Not for everyone, but perfect for some.
The 60% cotton and 40% nylon blend also isn’t as shower proof as many of the options on this list, but it’s reasonably water resistant and much more affordable. Sierra Designs’ short parkas can often be had for less than $200 when they’re on sale. Vintage mountain parkas are also worth a look, especially those from old heritage brands such as LL Bean, Woolrich, Eddie Bauer, REI, Holubar, Alpine Designs, and Wilderness Experience (search eBay and Etsy). Many of those will be a bit longer, which means they’ll be easier to wear over a sport coat.
Arc’teryx Gamma MX Hoody (Softshell Fabrics)
Few of the designs we’ve been talking about in this guide are meant for real aerobic activities. If you’re off hiking in the springtime and want to prepare for any possible showers, you’ll want to pack a much more breathable jacket.
Softshell jackets are perfect for this kind of thing. They’re stretchy, comfortable poly-nylon blends, which are often backed with an interior, micro-pile fleece that helps wick sweat. Of all the options mentioned in this series, they’re typically the most breathable. The knitted fabric lets heat escape; the interior fleece keeps you dry; and the DWR treated, synthetic fibers keep light showers at bay. You can find softshell jackets from brands such as Buffalo, Marmot, Patagonia, and Arc’teryx (mine is Arc’teryx’s Gamma MX Hoody).
The downside to many softshell jackets: they’re not terribly stylish looking. If I were going for one today, I’d probably pick up this Goldwin funnel neck pullover, which looks a bit lighter weight, but nicer for off-trail use. Pair it with tapered chinos and sneakers.
LL Bean Trail Jacket (Ripstop Nylon)
Along with the DIY durable-water-repellant spray we mentioned in Monday’s post, you can check out LL Bean’s no frills Trail Jacket for an affordable solution. It’s made from a ripstop nylon, comes with a hood, and is available in a bunch of playful colors (nice when the weather is gloomy). The fabric here isn’t anything special -- it’s somewhat stiff and rustles easily, and the Velcro closures aren’t that comfortable -- but it’s also not something you have to baby. And for the time being, LL Bean’s lifetime satisfaction guarantee is hard to beat. I wear the yellow one on occasion with Shetland sweaters, OCBDs, and jeans. Just be sure to size down if you want a slimmer fit.
For alternatives, check out Patagonia’s Torrentshell jackets, which are made with armpit zips and 2.5-layer waterproof/ breathable fabrics. They’re a bit cooler wearing and better built. North Face’s Venture jackets are also slightly slimmer fitting, while also featuring mesh pockets that allow wet items to dry easily. For something really affordable, consider Peter Storm’s pullover cagoules. That’s a bit more straightforward -- no fancy tech features or details -- but I think pretty stylish when worn with jeans. A favorite of British soccer fans and nicely priced at $20.
