New DIY Landscaping #annasgardens @annaporterartist #portersaerie #porterseyrie #thunderridge #sheltonwashington #washingtonstate Recently completed summer landscaping projects!!! We finally finished rocking in a Firewise recommended 5 foot zone closest to the house by: ✅ replacing bark dust in all flowerbeds with small river rocks; ✅ moved large in-bed plants that were too close to the house out to the 30 foot zone (5 azaleas and two large ferns); ✅ replaced in-bed plants with a container garden that can be moved around as needed; ✅ replaced 1/4 inch vent screens on the foundation vents with 1/8 mesh screens for ember protection; ✅ added a 1/8 inch mesh screen in front of the crawlspace lattice work below the front porch. We did all work ourselves. We bucketed, carried and placed all of the rocks surrounding the entire perimeter of the house. It was a lot of hard physical work, but worth the effort. We appreciate the improved fire protection for the summer months when it is hot and dry here, and we really like the added color and interest provided by the container garden. The bright colors of the pots will be especially nice in the winter months when it turns foggy, grey and rainy here. The new pots in the top two photos are 18 inch diameter, so they are large enough for my beloved roses, made of resin, so they are light weight, easy to move around even when full, easy to drill extra holes in for drainage, weatherproof, and very affordable compared to expensive glazed ceramic pots. Very happy with the results! Our final project will be to replace the ailing wooden border around the new rock beds with non-combustible cement edging (pavers).
