Im not a Doorkeay shipper necessarily but i appreciate the potential for the angst and resentment in the pairing.
Gertrude deliberately used Michael as a sacrifice, which gave this angry, vengeful edge to the Distortion. Gertrude then had Gerry as an (off the payroll) assistant some time after, and that must burn up Michael.
What made this stubborn, defiant other guy better and more worthy than him? Gertrude barely gave Michael the time of day despite his willingness to help. And yet at the same time, perhaps Michael feels some amount of pity for another victim of Gertrude. Maybe Michael is even intent on 'saving' Gerry from the archivist just to spite her.
Maybe the infatuation Michael has for Gerry is a lie, maybe it isn't. It's just happy enough to take something away from Gertrude, and the company of Gerry Keay is a pleasant bonus.
