. . . . . . #notesfromzusha #dovima #dovimawithelephants #richardavedonphotography #supermodel #fashionblog #fashiongram https://www.instagram.com/p/B1iXC0igMzE/?igshid=1mr6yrhvaxwdr

Richard Avedon - Dovima With Elephants 1955
Tumblr media
Richard Avedon was an American fashion and portrait photographer, his fashion and portrait helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last century.
He started working as an advertising photographer for a department store in 1944 was later endorsed by the Director of Fashion Magazine “Harpers Bazaar” because of his good works.
He set up his studio in 1946 and began providing images for magazines including Vogue and Life, he soon became the chief photographer for Harpers Bazaar.
He was always interested in how portraiture captures the personality and soul of the subject. Avedon was able to focus on the inner world's of his subject evolving emotions and reactions. He would sometime evoke reactions from his portrait subjects by guiding them into uncomfortable areas of discussion or asking them psychologically probing questions, through this means he would produce images revealing aspects of his subjects character and personality that were not typically captured by other.
The picture above was taken by Avedon and he used one of America’s highest paid models, Dovima. Originally born Dorothy Virginia Margaret Juba in 1927, When Richard Avedon photographed Dovima at a Paris circus in 1955 for Harper’s Bazaar, both were already prominent in their fields. She was one of the world’s most famous models, and he was one of the most famous fashion photographers. It makes sense, then, that Dovima With Elephants is one of the most famous fashion photographs of all time. But its enduring influence lies as much in what it captures as in the two people who made it.
Dovima With Elephants distills that shift by juxtaposing the spectacle and strength of the elephants with Dovima’s beauty—and the delicacy of her gown, which was the first Dior dress designed by Yves Saint Laurent. Underlined by the dirty elephants and the clean, elegant model, the rough elephant skin and the smooth fabric of the dress, as well as by gray sprightly but chained elephants and clear-cut and flowing black and white dress. Yet, Avedon was unsatisfied; for the bottom picture, he lamented that, “the sash isn’t right. It should have echoed the outside leg of the elephant to Dovima’s right.
At first glance, the  attractive thing in this photo (the studium) is the fact that it is black and white. Black and white photographs hold a special place in the heart. But the thing that also draws more  immediate attention  is the elephants. They are such powerful, fantastic creatures. It’s hard not to be hypnotized by their presence, and it’s even more difficult not to notice them altogether with chains around the legs. Since it is a fashion photograph, it makes sense that another source of studium (at least for me) is the dress that Dovima is wearing. It is sophisticated and elegant, but does not detract any attention from the elephants. It simultaneously acts as the focal point while sort of fading away to the background of the image.
