Daveed Diggs Sets New York Stage Return

Tony winner Daveed Diggs is returning to the Public Theater, the venerable downtown New York stage institution where the actor first turned heads in the original cast of Hamilton.

Diggs will star with Sheria Irving, Zoe Winters and additional cast to be announced in the world premiere of Suzan-Lori Parks' White Noise. The play centers on a woke and worldly group of longtime friends and lovers shaken by a racially motivated incident with cops that causes Diggs' character Leo to turn to extreme measures for his self-preservation.

The Public's artistic director Oskar Eustis will stage the production, which begins performances March 5 with a free first preview, ahead of an official opening March 20. The limited engagement is scheduled to run through April 14.

How Theater Stepped Up to Meet the Trump Era

On the Tuesday morning in June 2015 when Donald J. Trump waved his way down, down, down a golden-edged escalator in Trump Tower to announce his presidential candidacy on a stage below, he set the United States on a trajectory that much of the country wasn’t anticipating. The theater, for one, was busy heading in a very different direction, and in a vastly different spirit.

“Hamilton,” already a phenomenon downtown, would alight on Broadway in less than a month, powered by an exhilarating wealth of talent — people of color, almost all. Rebuking in rhyme the racism and xenophobia that have always been embedded in the American way, it was a potent emblem of the Obama years: This is what greatness can be.

But the momentum that started with “Hamilton” in the theater only accelerated during the Trump administration. As artists watched liberties threatened and inequities exacerbated, the work we saw became more urgent than it had been in decades, and thrillingly so.

For the most part, it didn’t aim straight at the president, though a “Julius Caesar” with a Trumpian title character managed to trigger the right-wing outrage machine when Oskar Eustis staged it in Central Park in 2017.

Rather, producers elevated formally adventurous, politically incendiary plays — like Heidi Schreck’s “What the Constitution Means to Me” and Jeremy O. Harris’s “Slave Play” — that spoke meaningfully to our nation’s troubled soul. Audiences, hungering for that holiest of dramatic experiences, catharsis, used the ritual of theatergoing to think and hurt and heal.

This is not to credit Trump, who has demonstrated little use for culture beyond celebrity. It is simply to acknowledge, with wonder and gratitude, the abundance of work crackling with brilliance that lately has enriched the theater.

Not that American stages were or have become any kind of Eden. For all their professed liberal inclusivity, they are and always have been dominated by white men from comfortable backgrounds. But the advent of Trump, with his swaggering, tough-guy masculinity and aggressive, loud-and-proud whiteness, demanded action.

The theater couldn’t get away anymore with just talking the talk. If it was what it claimed to be, it had to listen at long last to calls for change and begin to walk the walk.

And it did so in the smartest possible way, responding to Trump as to an emergency. It largely did not get lured, the way a lot of the media did, into turning its spotlight on his supposedly disenfranchised supporters. There was no deluge of plays about the president.

Quick takes produced in 2017, like Robert Schenkkan’s “Building the Wall” and Michael Moore’s “The Terms of My Surrender,” didn’t add much to the discourse, and Anne Washburn’s 2019 “Shipwreck” hasn’t aged well. Will Arbery’s dispatch about conservative Catholics in the heartland, “Heroes of the Fourth Turning,” was an Off Broadway hit, but having been raised Catholic in flyover country, I found it less than revelatory.

What proved vital was the critical mass of works that probed the roots of our distress and enmity. Although many were in development before Trump’s election — none of the social ills that have consumed us sprang into being in 2016, after all — their staging during his tenure asserted a creed directly counter to the one espoused by the White House.

After women across the country greeted the Trump administration by marching through the streets in pink pussy hats, we saw female anger and the reasons for it taken seriously onstage, in shows like Aleshea Harris’s “Is God Is,” Halley Feiffer’s “The Pain of My Belligerence” and Kirsten Childs’s “Bella: An American Tall Tale.”

“What the Constitution Means to Me,” a sunnily furious, meticulously argued indictment of the nation’s second-classing of women, struck such a chord that it transferred to Broadway, went on a national tour and was filmed for Amazon.

Off Broadway, Emily Mann’s Gloria Steinem bio-play “Gloria: A Life” became an event in a way it likely would not have been if so many feminists hadn’t felt so alarmed by the president. Something similar happened with Waterwell’s “The Courtroom,” a verbatim performance of immigration court transcripts that forced audiences to consider how we as a nation — even under Trump’s predecessors — had gotten so cruel.

And, of course, “Slave Play,” whose set reflected our faces back at us, insisting that we recognize our involvement in its trauma. (That design, by Clint Ramos, got one of the show’s record-breaking 12 nominations for the yet-to-be-held 2020 Tony Awards.) Like “Constitution,” it was an unusually provoking show for Broadway.

Ditto Young Jean Lee’s “Straight White Men” (not a love letter to them) and Taylor Mac’s corpse-filled tragicomedy, “Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus,” about the bloody messes that rulers make and ordinary people are left to clean up. Its tiny glimmer of hope for the future was a baby wearing a shark onesie. That’ll scare Trump, huh?

Just as thoughtfully political were shows like Michael R. Jackson’s Pulitzer-winning “A Strange Loop”; Shaina Taub and Laurie Woolery’s “As You Like It”; and David Byrne’s “American Utopia,” each an openhearted musical affirmation of our shared humanity.

Some of my memories of theatergoing in the Trump era seem even more lacerating now. At Ensemble Studio Theater in May 2017, Emily Chadick Weiss’s “The Fork,” a one-act comedy about killing the president, was met with delighted, unhesitating laughter — a response as jarring at the time as it was telling about the state of our civic health.

Then there was a 2018 performance of “Constitution” at New York Theater Workshop, only days after Christine Blasey Ford’s Senate committee testimony and before Brett M. Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. In that fraught week, the raw sobs of a woman behind me drowned out whole passages of dialogue.

There was also an afternoon at Theater for a New Audience in 2019, when quite a few white spectators at “Fairview” stayed planted in their seats even as the show, making its central point, dared them to look at the space we were sharing from an unaccustomed vantage.

What echoes loudest in my mind, though, is a question from the French director Ariane Mnouchkine. In the fall of 2017, I went to Paris to watch her rehearse her company in “A Room in India,” a play she was bringing to New York. I had been at the company’s theater only minutes when she told me, worriedly, that three of her Afghani-French actors were having trouble securing their visas. She blamed Trump.

Then she asked me, sharply, “What have you done?” By electing him, that is — and it didn’t matter whom I, personally, had voted for. She meant all Americans, because his election had happened on our watch.

Her question, I think, is at the root of the American theater’s response to Trump’s ascent, which blindsided not just much of this country but also much of the world. If we as a people were to make any sense of it, we had to ask ourselves what we had done and how things had gotten so bad.

The old intellectual parlor games wouldn’t do the trick. To process this, new stories were required.

So the theater, beginning to dismantle some of the walls that had kept so many people out, tapped into the profusion of artistry waiting there. In doing that, it rose to the task.

Now, faced with the existential challenge of coming back from the pandemic shutdown, it has to keep at it. It cannot revert to old inequities, onstage or backstage.

As Schreck‘s debate opponent argues in “Constitution”: “Just like us this document is flawed. But just like us it is also capable of getting better.”

So is the theater.

Below is a clearer version of Oskar Eustis' introduction. *** A Note from Oskar Eustis Dear Friends, Oscar Isaac was the first actor I cast at The Public Theater. He was just finishing Juilliard in the Spring of 2005, and I had taken the job at The Public. My illustrious predecessor, George C. Wolf, had planned the summer of 2005 at the Delacorte, but the second slot had dropped out and I had to program a last-minute replacement. We hit upon a revival of John Guare and Galt McDermot's wonderful musical adaptation of Two Gentlemen of Verona (which we refer to colloquially as Two Gents), hired Kathleen Marshall to direct, and we were off to the races. When the brilliant young Oscar finished his audition, John Guare showed his yellow pad at me, and I saw scrawled there "STW." I'd learned a new acronym, Straight To Wardrobe. Oscar was simply, remarkable. His Proteus that summer was just as delightful and joyous as his Romeo two years later was heartbreaking and beautiful. (he played opposite Lauren Ambrose in Michael Greiff's exhilarating production in the Park). He has since gone on to extraordinary stardom and recognition (I can't help citing his breathtakingly beautiful performance in Show Me a Hero, one of the great television achievements of the millennium), but his roots have always been in the theater, and in Shakespeare. It is a joy to have him back. Sam Gold did a masterful job of steering Home Fun through it's development process and into glorious life, both here at The Public and then onto Tony-winning Broadway success. I watched him create four different versions of the Fun Home staging, for four different spaces (the Shiva and the Newman here downtown, Circle In The Square uptown, and the national touring company). Each time, his brilliance and vision lead to fresh and surprising revelations. He's a wonderful craftsman. But he is much more than that. From Fun Home onward he has revealed himself to be a deep and complex artist, using each production as a way to examine the human soul. His version of the glass menagerie at The Belasco this season was as courageous as it was revelatory; his production of Othello last fall at New York Theater Workshop was the most emotionally powerful version of that masterpiece that I have ever seen. Sam is one of those rare theater directors who is unmistakably working as an artist in his right. I am so grateful that he has come back to The Public for HAMLET. He has also surrounded Oscar with an acting company of breathtaking talent. As for the play? HAMLET is the greatest dramatic work in the history of the universe. I hope you enjoy! Tonight, I tried to kill myself.

Luckily, I didn’t. So now I’m going to turn a thing that made me cry for hours into a humorous story. (Or at least try to, anyways)

I walk into my parents’ room intending to ask my mom to ride with me somewhere real quick, instead I find a suitcase on the bed. Unaware that we were going on a vacation, I asked who was leaving. Turns out my mom was leaving for a “few” days to “think” about things.

You’re a college-going mom of four that runs a business in her spare time, what do you need to think about?

Angered by the fact that my mom had time to find herself on a beach for a few days, I left in a huff to take my wonderful, but handful-of-a-goddaughter home.

— I don’t like driving alone in a car, I often get tempted to end it. But then I realize that I just bought that car, and it’d be a terrible parting gift to leave my parents with a $xxx car bill. —

“So you can spend three days on a beach by yourself, but you can’t ride with me to drop Imani off. I’m totally okay with that,” would’ve been the last words I spoke to my mom.

After noisily going in and out of the house a few times before leaving, I sat in the driveway for ten minutes waiting for my mom to stop me. Or at least say goodbye. She never did.

I left, fighting back tears. I knew I couldn’t do anything with my godchild in the car. I called my sister and pretended everything was okay.

I dropped Imani off without a hitch, but I couldn’t just go home, could I? I thought about driving around and finding a ditch I could drive into. I thought about texting my confidant, hoping they could find the words to stop me. But I quickly realized that I didn’t have one. Not since I left college and he got a girlfriend. I thought about going to a drug store and buying pills to overdose on. Then I remembered I didn’t have any money. And it dawned on me that I didn’t know what kind of pills would do the job properly without just putting me to sleep for a few hours.

Still aimlessly driving around, I get a text from my mom. YES! “She cares!” I thought – NOPE! “Will you pick up your brother?” Is the reality.

Seriously? She can’t check on me, but she can ask me to get my brother? Sure, that works.

Driving there in the rain, I tried to swerve into the other lane. But I didn’t want to take anyone down with me. That’s just not right. I corrected myself and headed to get my brother.

“Wait a second! Why am I still listening to my mother if she doesn’t care?!” I couldn’t think of an answer, but I still went to get my brother. However, he couldn’t be bothered. My younger sister was already there getting him. Even though I was clearly crying over the phone, they said not a word. I drove away with the intention to get lost.

Shouldn’t be too hard, I can get lost in my own neighborhood. Wrong! (Trump reference). Every turn I took, I knew where I was. So I tried harder. I ended up in downtown Eustis, waiting for someone, anyone, to ask where I was. No one did, so I kept going.

Left. Right. Straight. Three stop lights. Five stop signs. Where the hell am I?

Going. Going. Going. Stop sign. “This road looks like a dead end, but there’s only one way to know for sure.” It wasn’t.

“This way looks promising!” CRASH! BANG! BUMP! *Shake* *wobble* *shake* Landed on a dirt road. (How exactly? No clue!)

Second star to the right, and straight on till morning. Just kidding, I’m still on a dirt road and there’s another stop sign. “Go right down the super creepy street over the train tracks? Or left, back toward civilization?” *Sees a graffiti covered cop car* “Civilization it is!”

Headed back home trying to think of a way to avoid confrontation. “I know. I’ll turn my headlights off when I pull into the driveway, that way they won’t know I’m back. And I’ll go in through the back door and just stay in my brother’s room for a while. Fool proof. "Shit! He’s home. Can’t camp out in his room. "New plan: I’ll stay in my car until the coast is clear.” The coast was clear as soon as I pulled up. Everyone was already in their rooms. No one cared I had been gone for two hours. I “snuck” into my room and started to clean. That’s right, I said “Clean.” Something was definitely wrong with me.

Twenty minutes into cleaning, my dad texts me and asks if I’m coming home soon. “You’re a little late.” “I see that.” He replied.

My sister calls back and I answer with some snarky and sarcastic comebacks that I can’t think of right now. I try to get off the phone like nothing was wrong, while obviously letting her know I was mad. I’m so strategic that way.

She asks several times if there was something I wanted to say to her and I finally tell her that I almost killed myself. “WHAT THE F*CK!?!” Is what she would’ve said if she wasn’t at a church retreat.

Knock. Knock. Knock. It’s mom. I say nothing.

Knock! Knock! Knock! No reply.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Dad texts and asks me to let her in. I oblige.

Tears flow. “What’s wrong, babydoll?” “Don’t ‘babydoll’ me, you know exactly what’s wrong!” I thought to myself. “Why are you upset?” “Why are YOU leaving?!” “I’m gonna come back.” “Are you?” “If it upsets you that much, I won’t go.”

More words were exchanged. She apologized. I confessed. We hugged. Things got better. Then I set a 5:45am alarm to go to work in the morning. And now we’re here.

Thanks for listening. It’s probably not that funny, sarcasm and dry humor are hard to convey with words.

July 4, 2020 | 10 PM

The 74-year tradition of Fireworks on the 4th of July will continue in 2020 in a different way due to the Corona Virus pandemic, with a “Salute to Salute July 4th, 2020”. 

There will be a brief pyrotechnic display launched from a to be disclosed location at 10:00 PM Saturday July 4th. Many Area residents and visitors will be able to see – and hear – the Salute to Salute July 4th from their homes and backyards. St. Cloud area community members will be encouraged to look and listen from their doorsteps or backyard for the Salute to Salute July 4th at 10:00 pm Saturday July 4th. 

The short pyrotechnic display will be launched from a to be announced location. Area residents will learn which direction to look shortly before 10:00 pm Saturday July 4th via area media outlets and St. Cloud Fireworks Social Media.

Winter Park Fourth of July Fireworks

July 4-5, 2020 | 9 AM to 11 PM

Due to current COVID-19 social distancing requirements, the City of Winter Park invites the community to enjoy a virtual presentation of its annual 4th of July Celebration. A link to the pre-recorded, virtual celebration will be posted Saturday, July 4, at 9 a.m., on the city’s official website at cityofwinterpark.org as well as the city’s Facebook page. 

The virtual celebration will begin with a special welcome from Mayor Steve Leary followed by musical performances and historical tributes including:

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer’s 43rd annual Fireworks at the Fountain will be held virtually this year. News 6 will present a pre-recorded compilation of the brightest and biggest fireworks from the past several years at Lake Eola.

Before the fireworks show, News 6 will honor our heroes in the community. The fireworks portion begins at 9.
