RESIDENCY PROPOSAL: BIO-ACOUSTIC LANDSCAPES AND RUINS
This project is a hypothesis for the future, a speculation.
We imagine a bio-acoustic landscape taking the shapes of a sonic garden where interconnected plants would allow the visitors to interact with their environment.
Cables mingling with the roots of semi-organic, semi-machine specimens would allow an inter-species dialogue in a cyberspace.
Marking the ground, or erected as ornamental motifs, the imprints of the passage of agricultural vehicles are reproduced in plaster.
These gigantic, sedimentary tire traces, would become the visible witnesses of centuries long soil abuse. Their aesthetics reminds the visitors of ruins or ancient art productions, as they spring from the ground of this garden made up of layers of an unbalanced past, oscillating between an art installation and an Eden.
In order to allow sonic interactions to be generated by touch, functional technological pieces (arduinos, humidity sensors, accelerometers, acidity sensors ...) are widespread on the grass of this laboratory-garden where interactive and musical plants intertwine with interconnected medical electrodes.
Memory capsules merge together with wild and semi-exotic plants whose sound identities can finally be heard: a meditative soundscape of the living in active mutation, like a synthetic breath. Various frequencies of organic bodies emanate from clusters of electrical wires, copper and plastic in visible strata.
Plants take roots in the ruins of cultural objects that have become obsolete (left behind ornaments, logos, sculptures of contemporary art).
Particles of color that have no place in this abandoned landscape as well as inorganic forms cover the ground like carcasses of the Human era.
This project is an archeology of a potential future between ecological drama and art exhibition.
Fossils, sediment imprints, serial patterns on which nature would have taken over: an imaginary island, a digital paradise, a white cube ruin, an installation garden .
By creating a sonic dialogue between plants and humans, our connection to nature is strengthened as our awareness is developed: the human hand gently touches the leaves of living plants so that sound is produced and heard, amplified in space.
An exchange of energy is transmitted from the human body to the roots of plants and vice-versa. An invisible, careful and poetic communication is then organized between the two species.
Primarily, it is a physical experience. Sound vibrations are felt throughout the body of the person interacting with connected plants, thanks to the flow of electricity lead to a computer program that modulates the sound.
Our human sensitivity is directly attuned to the behavior of the plant when we change the pace and pressure of our touch. The plant becomes a sonic instrument. Our consciousness opens and our perception of the living elements is therefore mutated.
Indeed, after such an experience, our perception of the organic world is forever changed. We are rethinking our positioning towards non-human beings, as well as our impact on the living. A form of respect emerges from this exchange and likewise, a switch of perspective is taking place.
How to decolonize nature? How to readjust our relationship with this nature-culture?
Indeed, the definition of nature is constantly fluctuating. It seems, however, that it systematically excludes us as humans.
We are therefore entitled to wonder whether our impact and human activity have drastically transformed the chemistry of the planet (soils, living things, the atmosphere, etc.), and has therefore changed its deep condition permanently.
Is it still possible to speak of nature without humans? Indeed, it is now inconceivable to return to the original state of nature. This is not a statement of failure but a real willingness to ask the right questions when facing the current ecological crisis.
The importance of respecting our ecosystem is essential and this installation may be the start for a reflection. It is crucial to imagine an imminent repositioning and to consider a slowdown in our soil exploitation (fundament of the colonization of nature) in order to project humankind into a less dystopian future.
The artistic practice is a path towards this overcoming, this well needed change of focus (currently and dangerously human-centered): we must (re)start to look at nature, to observing it with respect and to listen to it.
In short, it is necessary to interact more poetically with our environment and to wonder if it is possible to continue to create and evolve by collaborating more with nature and listening more to our planet.
Inspired by the concept of English gardens, we want to create a fiction of anticipation in which altered vegetation has resumed its rights on the traces of human activity (fragments, rocks, sediments, ruins).
These particles from the past will be architectural elements mixed with plaster reproductions of vehicle imprints: as for example, a forced start in the mud, a turn of a tractor on the plowing of a field, the passage of a construction machine imprinted in the ground.
We will turn these fossils drawings taken from the human landscape into ornamental elements and patterns made with pigmented plaster.
This component of the installation is above all a sculptural work which will allows us to question our relationship to displacement, and what is left as information in the soil for a future archeology.
The idea is to focus on plastic happenings present in our environment, directly related to drawing, painting and printing. An analysis of the passages and gestures marking the earth.
The installation will create a mental space, a physical experience opposing and then associating, both an introspective vision and a speculative vision.
The possibility of activating the installation of the sonic garden with an interactive performance including the audience may be organized as well, repeatedly over the period of the residency (cf. the PLUIES project by Pauline Mikó).
Technically, this progressive installation would be realized throughout the residency, in several research segments (may the be conceptual and technical) in the form of a series of written essays and try-outs in space.
The sculptures will be produced on site by Hugues Loinard. As for the technological part, it will be developed during the residency by Pauline Mikó (in possible collaboration with certain actors of the residency’s network and other scientific and technological institutions that may be linked to the organization).
The idea of an active research laboratory is essential in this project. Accidents, discoveries and experimentations are key elements in our collaborative approach.
Our research sits where art and technology align for a critical analysis of the Anthropocene.
Environmental issues and the influence of human activity on our planet are the primal elements questioned in our collective practice.
On an other level, we hope to be able to take advantage of the residency’s network through the intervention of specialists, artists, curators, researchers, who will allow us to deepen our approach and open up new lines of reflection. In order to enrich our research, we have already started to contact academics in geology and geo-archeology in order to speculate more precisely on the possible aspects of a world formerly scarified by human activities then suddenly returned to itself (in a vision post-anthropocenical of the future).
Finally, we are considering contacting botanical, agriculture and stratigraphy specialists, to base our work on real data and active research on the subject.
We hope to have aroused your curiosity and we thank you in advance for your time and interest.
We remain available for any further informations regarding our proposal,
Pauline Mikó and Hugues Loinard,
Brussels, April 2020.

Experiments in Diplomacy: Inspecting [6/?]
//Jaal x Ryder // Humor. Romance. SFW //  Me:A Spoilers// Catch up on Ao3
Good in theory . Her new life motto. If there’s a tattoo parlor in Kadara port (and why wouldn’t there be? Every seedy underbelly of the galaxy needs an equally seedy tattoo parlor), she’s going to get it embossed across her forehead. Double shielding? Good in theory. In execution, however…
Se-ah can’t remember if she washed her hair already, so she upends the Vetra-procured, limited-edition ‘Blasto Saves Christmas’ novelty shampoo bottle and vivid, gelatinous pink goops out onto her palm. She doesn’t know if the brand-marketing geniuses had ‘irradiated slime’ in mind when they rolled this product out, or if something terribly wrong happened during 600 years of dark space, but she doesn’t care and lathers it into her hair anyway. It doesn’t burn and it smells decent so long as you happen to enjoy the scent of congealed Tupari sports drink, which she does.
SAM tried to warn her. It wasn’t just the spatial issue of enclosing one kinetic shield within another on that scale, although that was a two-day migraine for her and Jaal, it was the power draw . Shields draw a huge amount from her hardsuit’s power cells. And while the omni-tool interface in her armor is wired on a separate circuit to avoid--
Pausing, she examines the shampoo bottle in her hand. Did she wash her hair already? A shower sounded like a good alternative to shouting at Margaret when the last power cycling trial turned up the same results as all the other ones before. Bad results, ‘try this in the field and you’ll short out your shields’ results. But while water a few degrees below scalding is doing wonders for her healing injuries, what she really needs is some sleep.
Sleep. Another ‘good in theory’ idea.
Frustrated, she rips up the rest of a half-peeled away ‘Sale!’ sticker from Blasto’s face (er...the hanar equivalent of a face) printed onto the front of the bottle.
“This one knows if you’ve been bad or good,” she reads aloud from the quote bubble no longer covered by the sticker.
As far as cinematic masterpieces go, ‘Blasto Saves Christmas’ is criminally underrated no matter what Liam says. How could anyone hate the movie that gave the galaxy the song ‘This one saw it’s genetic progenitor enkindling Santa Claus’ ? And elcor Santa. Jollily: Ho. Ho. Ho.
She slumps against the shower wall and watches ribbons of pink water vortex around the drain. Nothing ever goes the way it should.
Beneath the crisply folded clothing just outside the shower, something begins to beep.
“Pathfinder, workbench telemetry is indicating abnormal readings from sensors in the containment enclosures.”
“Oh, so that isn’t one of those ‘everything is fine’ alarms then?” she deadpans, her thumping pulse freefalling into her stomach.
Like all awe-inspiring things, Mags is as beautiful as she is deadly. At the core of her circuits and wires is a multi-million credit eezo heart paired to a thermionic converter. Both are triple shielded in their own sealed enclosures--or are supposed be, at any rate.
Puddling water all over the place, she snatches up her beeping omni-tool and opens Maggie’s remote access. Warnings pop up, rapid fire, from the internal ozone sensors. Her pulse wanders back up to her chest where it belongs.
“Eezo containment is unaffected. I suspect there has been a failure in the ozone scrubbers for the thermionic converter. Accumulated O3 concentrations are approximately 510% above normal in the containment enclosure,” SAM says.
Not eezo. But ozone is no joke either. While it’s great up in the stratosphere, crammed into a tiny room with mediocre ventilation, it’s a whole other animal. One with a taste for certain carbon bonds--like the ones in lung tissue or in rubber seals. Mags pumps out a staggering amount of the stuff during operation. Without scrubbers and the sealed enclosures, she could kill every person and machine in the lab.
“I’ll need to shut her off before I can take a look at what’s wrong. Maybe the catalyst is depleted already and we just need to replace the cartridge.”
Se-ah begins remote shutdown commands, typing in an override to get past the twenty versions of the question ‘But are you sure you want to initiate shutdown processes?’. In-between override commands and obnoxious prompts, she yanks her shirt down over her dripping hair and pulls on her Initiative-issued training shorts. Both cling, plastering over skin until splotches of water tie-dye wet shadows across the fabric.
“Hang in there Mags,” she mutters before beelining for the tech-lab at a steady clip.
She collides into Jaal as soon as the door opens. Reflexively, he grips her by the elbow with a massive hand before she can fall back onto her rear. Her breath hitches while the persistent ache in her chest fusions unbearable heat. She does her best to ignore it. A difficult task when half her sleep-deprived focus is parsing out the scent he’s wearing today into Milky Way equivalents. It’s bright and brisk; night-blooming cereus blossoms, pale as moonlight and tipped in the cold starlight on the East Face of Mt. Whitney--her first real climb.
He must’ve woken up when she went to shower because he’s already dressed in his armor and holding a datapad that is currently slipping out of his grasp. Repositioning it before it can tumble to the ground, he smiles at her as if she’s a gift the universe has left on his doorstep. “Ah, Ryder, good. I was just about to go looking for you. Your Maggie has been beeping, very insistently, and--”
Brow furrowing, he releases her elbow and reaches out and catch a water droplet beading off her earlobe. “You’re wet.”
Se-ah steps back in the guise of looking him over to confirm that she’s left a damp print behind in the fabric of his rofjinn. “And now, so are you--sorry about that.”
Wincing, she tries to pat away the moisture even though the gesture is absolutely useless without a towel. With a pained smile, she withdraws her hands and adds, “And sorry about the alarm waking you up.”
“The fabric is capable of enduring a little water. It would make a poor garment if it could not. And I was already awake, there is no need to apologize.” The datapad in his hand slips down a few centimeters again and she’s close enough to glimpse a portion of the screen no longer obscured by his thumb. It doesn’t look technical. A personal letter maybe?
“Were you writing home?”
“Ah, no. I am not.” Jaal directs half his answer down to the decking when he notices that she does not have shoes on. Has he never seen human feet before? She wiggles her toes at him.
Further elaboration isn’t coming. She smothers the impulse to ask for it. Maggie. She’s here to take a look at Maggie, not pry into Jaal’s personal communications. And definitely not to ask the heart-racing question clamoring in the back of her mind. Who then? Someone special? Back to business, she offers a nod before making her way past his broad frame. Jaal follows her back into the lab, reabsorbed with his mysterious missive.
Maggie is as sullen and uncommunicative as a kid sent to time-out for misbehavior. Displays dark, mass effect fields vanished, no hums or whirs, beeps or chimes. It’s like she’s giving her the silent treatment, turning a metal shoulder with a sulky ‘hmph’. Se-ah frowns, running a hand over the glossy top. No resonant hum meets her fingertips.
“Pathfinder, you will be able to access the scrubber via the panel located near the floor on the side closest to the bulkhead. It is five centimeters to the right of the duct leading to the general ventilation system.” SAM informs her.
Of course it is. Delicately, she goes about leveraging herself down to the decking without straining her injured leg. She manages, with little grace and a lot of jerky, uncontrolled motions, to lie on her side so that she can hook her hands around the corner of the bench and pry open the least-accessible panel ever. The catalyst chamber slides out one centimeter at a time, smelling vaguely of wet stone, and she has to wiggle closer to bring her arm up to scan it.
Only...she doesn’t need to scan it, the chamber slides out all the way and she can see now that half the cartridge slots are empty. Someone’s taken them.
“Did you locate the problem?” Jaal asks, louder than she expected him to be. He’s come to kneel behind her, the datapad still in hand but momentarily forgotten again.
“Not yet,” she hisses, furious. “But when I do, I’m throwing her out the airlock.”
After she gets her cartridges back. Se-ah pushes off the decking into a crouch, too angry to remember the ruptured tendon she’s supposed to rest for at least a few more days. As her thighs flex, ready to spring her up from the deck, wrenching spasms swarm up from her knee. “Ow--fuck. Fuck.”
Somehow, when she crumple-slides back down, she ends up sitting, legs stretched in front of her, with her back against the tech bench. It feels like smacking down on the landing platform all over again--if the landing platform were covered in fire ants. Bright pinpoints fizzle and pop across the backs of her eyelids in time with the cramp. Thudding her head back twice to clear them, she directs a steady stream of profanity up towards the overhead of the compartment while digging her fingernails into her skin to take an edge off the pain with tactile stimulation.
“Let me,” Jaal offers and she nods her assent vigorously, unable to speak through her clenched teeth. Unable to think. The missing cartridges, Maggie, they both slip into the static, forgotten.
Something falls to the ground, a soft ‘whumph’ of displaced air. Eyes still screwed shut, she can’t see what he’s dropped. But she realizes it is his glove when his bare fingers press against the skin of her inner thigh, just above her knee. Electricity hums, a low-frequency vibration rolling mild warmth up over the expanse of fluttering muscle mapped out beneath his fingertips and the base of his palm.
It’s like he’s flipped a switch on the pain. It vanishes before she can blink open her disbelieving eyes. Twitching sarcomeres relax and fall into the pulsing electrical lullaby. Relief precipitates off her lips into a breathy laugh.
“That’s a nice trick.” She watches as his hand smoothes careful circles against her leg.
“While you’re having a conversation with my muscle cells, can you tell them to get their act together before we get to the Nexus tomorrow?” Smile tugging at his lips, he meets her eyes. “Talking to your cells...that’s a different way of looking at bioelectricity.”
“Well that’s what it is, isn’t it? That’s how muscle cells communicate with each other--moving electric charges around. Which is exactly what you’re doing.” She tips a teasing smile at him. “You’re all talking about me aren’t you? About how terrible I am.”
Jaal’s laugh rumbles so loudly, his shoulders quake with mirth. “There are only good things to say about you.”
He says it so earnestly, despite the silliness, and she flushes. His hand stills and an electric pulse ripples out from his palm like a stone skipped over a pond. The voltage must be stronger because it’s warmer and it tickles a bit. Part of her wonders if he’d let her go at him with a multimeter next time he does that.
“Was that a good thing you said just now?”
“It was.” She recognizes his look for what it is. It’s the same face he uses to tell Liam the wrong definitions to things. The face that has Gil worried about his personal winning streak. Inscrutable, with a deceptive hint of innocence. She knows better. He’s messing with her, just waiting for her to play into his hands and ask for further explanation. It would serve him right for her not to give into her own curiosity and derail the joke altogether.
“So…are you going to tell me?”
Ah well, she tried.
Leaning forward, he holds her gaze as he swipes a curled hand beneath the dripping lock of hair that had untucked itself from behind her ear. Out of the corner of her eye, she sees a water droplet catch the light as it slips down over the surface of his glove.
“Of course not.” He looks pretty damn smug. “It was a secret.”
She likes the idea of his secret pressed into her cells for safe-keeping. The thought makes her greedy. She wants more. She wants to collect secrets from him, store them up in her motor synapses like muscle memories.
She wants to give him secrets of her own--intimate ones. The kind only roaming fingers and mouths can find. Stuttered gasps and hitched breath, shivers, trembling thighs and lips bitten full and red. All just for him, for his ears alone.
Desire evaporates off her damp skin like moisture, wicking into the space between them and changing it. The air feels charged and heavy and warm. It shimmers, refracting back mirage images of things that could be if she only reached out and plucked them off the horizon. Not just secrets. Habits. Shared jokes. Shared futures.
His breath stills and for a moment she thinks he can see it too. She thinks he wants it too.
Beneath the palm still on her thigh, a prickle rushes over her bare skin. It stipples the full length of her legs, the lab’s excellent lighting throwing her goosebumps into high relief. Jaal must feel the subtle change because his gaze falters down to her legs. Concern meets fascination. “What’s--Ryder, your skin is changing. ”
“Yeah, it’s not permanent.” She runs a hand over the top of her thigh, brushing against the tips of all the tiny vellus hairs standing on end. “It happens when all these little muscles under our skin contract. It’s kind of funny, they’re completely useless to us now--what we call vestigial.”
“Ah. How are they useless? What are they meant to do?”
“Well, back before our evolutionary ancestors decided to get rid of it, they used to puff up our thick body hair.”
“Hair, like--” He gestures towards the damp lock lying against her cheek.
“Yup, only all over and much shorter. When it puffs up, it makes animals look bigger than they actually are and it also traps air, which is insulating and keeps the animal warm. We lost the hair but we kept the muscles and they still respond to threats and cold.”
“You’re cold?”
“No, I’m fine,” she assures him but a pained look flickers across his face. The electric pulse radiating out from his palm gives an erratic stutter. He must have to concentrate to some extent in order to use the bioelectricity in this way. Apparently, what she said had shattered it.
Guilt swims up in his eyes, which flit away to the datapad he’d set down beside him. “Ryder, if I--”
Threats and cold. The bright little star of emotion inside her feels like it is collapsing in under its own weight and taking her lungs with it. He thinks…
“No, that’s--I mean, there are other things that trigger the response, not just those two things. I mean, I get them all the time when I’m climbing or when I’m listening to beautiful music...”
Or when someone I’m attracted to touches me.
“...no one really knows why. It’s not that beautiful music or incredible views are threatening to me or--”
She’s babbling. If she doesn’t put a stop to it, she’ll go all night. He’s meeting her eyes again and there’s no shocked guilt left so she does them both a favor and just takes a deep breath.
“Maybe...they are,” he says. “Beauty can be terrifying.”
She tries to deflect with a weak laugh. “If that’s the case, I’m a bigger coward than I thought.”
It has the opposite effect. Jaal only grows more serious and frustration with her furrows up in his brow. Fair enough, she’s frustrated with herself too. She is a coward, trying desperately to obscure her own feelings from herself and from him. Because she’s afraid.
“Cowardice and fear are different things. One is shameful, the other is not. Angara are not ashamed to fear beauty. It is an affirming feeling for us, one we cherish. To be in awe is to know something vast and incredible, to be moved beyond the realm of what we know and be lost in beauty. We call it ‘glimpsing the threads’. It is...sacred to us. Isn’t that what you feel when you climb?”
“It is,” she admits. Too little truth given too late. She owes the both of them more than that. But emotional cowardice is a learned habit. One that, until recently, she never thought much about changing. Why would she? It always worked well for her in the past. It worked well for her father. The alternative looked...messier, more contentious, like Scott’s series of heartbreaks.
“I didn’t tell you that...I’m glad you decided to stay.” A small waver works it’s way through her voice. “I should’ve said...before we got to Aya yesterday. I wanted to but the truth is, I was relieved not to have to. But you deserve to know that I am...really happy you’re here.”
Another distinctive electric pulse tingles out from his palm and her goosebumps are back, tracing the path the electrons take from the tip of his fingers to the base of his hand. “That was my thank you,” he tells her, warmth in his eyes.
She smiles and then asks the question still lingering in the periphery of her mind, just out of sight like the datapad. “So who were you writing when I came in? Someone special?”
His eyes don’t leave hers and she can see reflections in them, a hundred shimmering, refracting possibilities.
“Yes. Someone very special.”
She’s standing in front of the Tempest escape pod when SAM’s notification comes.
“Pathfinder. You have new email at your terminal.”
The door is already hissing open and Peebee is standing there, looking at her like she’s lost it.
“Ryder, why the hell are you just standing in front of my door? And why the hell are you grinning? Oh shit...this is about the cartridges, isn’t it? Okay, okay before you do whatever you’re planning, can I just say that I was going to give them back? Ryder...okay, you’re officially freaking me out. Mission accomplished.”
Se-ah spares Peebee a distracted glance. “Oh, yeah, uhm...just...put them back where you found them. I have to--I just need to check my email.”
She’s across the bridge in a handful of elated heartbeats, opening the message from Jaal.
Dearest...

Precision sensor technologies are not only proving their value during the production and testing of wind turbines, but also in the real time condition monitoring of operationally active onshore and offshore wind farms.
A range of unpredictable events such as lightning, stormy weather and rough seas can have serious consequences on a wind turbine, potentially resulting in defective rotor blades, tower movements or, in the worst case scenario, complete failure or collapse of the wind turbine. This is why the turbines require 24/7 monitoring.
The rotor towers of wind turbines weigh dozens of tonnes. Their average rotor diameter is now 110m, with average hub heights now 130m. If such equipment fails, a high financial cost damage is incurred implied. Cranes and other machines are typically not available at short notice. Offshore wind farms, in particular, are not easily accessible at any time of day or night. Due to wear and the complexity of assets, in addition to environmental influences, there are also a number of possible problems errors such as shaft issues, gear faults, gear wheel wear, material fatigue, imbalance, temperature differences, lubrication faults and bearing clearances, which do not only impede smooth operation but might also involve other subsequent or secondary damages.
Predictive maintenance plays an essential role within this context. Pro-active monitoring based on precision sensor technology has already begun to be used in the production process of wind turbines and continues in test rigs and in the real-time monitoring of turbines during operation. Worn parts or deviations in production can now be recognised even before catastrophic larger cases of damage occurs. Therefore, it is possible to intervene long before the parts fail or tools begin to wear out. Not only can current asset conditions states be documented, but also trends and changes in observation of changing measurement data can be analysed and evaluated. Maintenance becomes predictable and sudden failure or down times of these large plants are reduced to a minimum.
Innovative sensor solutions are now available that enable reliable measurements and targeted evaluation of critical data. This sensor technology helps customers by preventing repairs, reducing failures, reducing costs and helping to predict maintenance cycles. Compared to manual inspection by employees where differences fluctuations can depending on a person’s tiredness and daily-changing mood have to be considered, sensors can provide highly precise, reliable, repeatable constant measurement results 24/7, 365 days per year.
Offset measurement of the wind turbine’s coupling ring
Above 100m, huge forces of wind act on the rotor blades, housing and tower. Therefore, gearbox and generator have an elastic bearing. This is why couplings in wind turbines must balance the relative movement of the gearbox and generator. When measuring the offset of the coupling ring, non-contact eddy current displacement sensors can be used to determine the distance, while measuring onto the metallic coupling ring. This leads to the determination of the load profile. Monitoring the measured values is required necessary to avoid unnecessary wear of couplings, bearings and shaft seals or, in extreme cases, serious damage to the wind turbine. Eddy current sensors allow measurements to be carried out in different directions – in the axial, radial and tangential axes. Some suppliers offer temperature-compensated versions that provide high measurement stability, even in strongly fluctuating ambient temperatures. The sensors are factory-calibrated for ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic materials, which eliminates the need for field calibration of the sensor. Compared to inductive switches and sensors, eddy current sensors provide a higher bandwidth and so are suitable for precise detection of high-speed movements.
Gap measurements in wind turbine bearings
Hydrostatic bearings are used in wind turbines. The task is to monitor the gap size between the bearing surface and the shaft. In the lubricating gap is an oil film, which prevents direct contact between the bearing surface and the shaft. In the case of a malfunction in the hydraulics, the oil pressure can rise and, in extreme cases, the gap would close. This would consequently lead to damage of the bearing and in turn, to a possible turbine failure. Therefore, Micro Epsilon’s sensor is mounted horizontally to the bearing shoe. It measures through the oil film and the plant bearing directly onto the shaft. Here, non-contact eddy current displacement sensors can be of the eddyNCDT 3001 and 3005 series used, which are robust, compact and have an integral controller. As well as offering excellent resistance to high pressures, lubricants and extreme temperatures, these sensors also enable rapid commissioning and can be retrofitted to existing wind turbines.
Air gap generator monitoring
With very large generators and electric motors, it’s important to determine the radial run out of the rotor inside the motor compared to the stator. Due to imbalances during operation, which could be, amongst others, due to wear caused by extreme wind and weather conditions, the rotor might touch the stator, which could lead to catastrophic failure. Therefore, non-contact optical and capacitive sensors are used to measure the distance between the stator and rotor and to monitor the so-called rotor gap whilst the motor is running. Non-contact capacitive sensors provide long-term stability, reliability and temperature stability. During air gap monitoring in a wind turbine generator, the average temperature is 120°C. Some suppliers such as Micro-Epsilon offer capacitive sensors that are specially adapted to measurements in a generator. They are resistant to vibration and are protected by a special housing. Their triaxial design enables flush installation into electrically conductive materials, as the guard ring electrode and grounding are also located on the front edge of the sensor alongside the measurement electrode.sses
Gearbox temperature
The gearbox temperature is measured during operation. Heating up of gearbox components may indicate a potential problem with a component. Subsequent remedial action can be started or maintenance planned.
To control air supply, the air flaps automatically open and close depending on the temperature. Draw-wire displacement sensors are able to monitor the position of the open air flap.
To monitor the supporting moments, eddy current displacement sensors measure the distance between the wind turbine nacelle and the tower, which enables early recognition of any fluctuations.
Non-contact laser triangulation sensors are ideal for measuring the distance between the tower and the foundation. High measuring rates enable the sensors to detect any changes reliably. Depending on the number of sensors installed, detailed evaluations about the vibration behaviour of the mast can be determined.
Test rigs for measuring wind turbine rotor stress
Test rigs have been developed for load tests on wind turbine rotor blades, which simulate the real loads caused by high winds and extreme weather conditions. The tip of the rotor blade can be distorted by up to 10m due to mechanical loads. Draw-wire sensors are mounted on these test rigs for measuring this distortion. Two sensors per traction point measure the deflection and torsion of the rotor blade. The draw-wire sensors operate with measuring ranges between 3m and 10m. The digital signal output is provided for further simulation and analyses.

Stuart Jeffries Fulfills Jonathan Miller
Determine the Angle: According to your demands, calculate the angle and also precise location of the bend. The safety and security document of a metal construction organization is extremely vital to the success of your item. Hydraulic, computer system controlled sheet metal brakes are very expensive and also made use of for high-volume industrial or building use. get redirected here -macam proses bending yaitu angel flexing, press brake flexing, attract flexing, rol bending, rol creating, seaming, aligning, dan flanging. Occasionally, though, the signs and symptoms of hefty steel poisoning is believed to be caused by another persistent illness such as autism, fatigue syndrome, numerous sclerosis, etc Delivering business are likewise seeking such commercial divers with welding field of expertise. It's a proven fact that steel roof disperses the sun's rays, but lighter shades tend to be extra affective compared to dark shades. Due to the fact that there's no various other action included, repainting a newly set up steel roof covering is simple. For stable arc, the welding device need to be such kind that a little variation in arc length (i.e. voltage) must not snuff out the arc. For that reason, more and more sailboats -and also smaller sized motor watercrafts - are being made from aluminum.
In this type of welding, a filler cable that develops the arc is used making a weld steel which is transferred in the room between 2 metal plates that are to be joined. Friedrich Wöhler is usually attributed with isolating aluminium (Latin alumen, alum) in 1827 by blending anhydrous aluminium chloride with potassium. The market is swamped with plethora of varieties of the metal roof's that drops in various cost brace. Moreover, the wire cooled down after MIG welding is usually sterner and for this reason more difficult to be hammered. And historically, as Gartner's Lydia Leong reminded me, SoftLayer's previous CloudLayer brand provided a solitary pay-by-the-hour bare steel setup. Such fractures can not just create along the steel grain borders, yet likewise throughout the grain advancement. Breaking up a Chi Blocker with fast fire flexing punches, changing to hefty planet strikes for a significant storage tank, doing crowd control with air bursts and after that shooting off water missiles for remote adversaries takes method however becomes a seamless process. Undoubtedly, you simply need to learn the few methods and techniques along the way to put together the process of this sort of welding a little bit simpler and obviously to construct much better, boosted and also boosted welds. However just like the complexity of eye shade phenotypic expression in people, one of the most logical answer is the interplay of numerous alleles to turn on the bending gene. Allow us see some of the affordable welders as well as the most effective welding equipments in the markets. The most effective thing Miller has going with. them is that when among their welding devices breaks, They have great client assistance. Sellers I've spoken with have stated that the black steel futon structure is the top solution headache when it concerned futons with over 95% of service problems being the failing of a black metal frame element. When it does involve welding tests with ceramic support tape it's going to most likely be just a 2G as well as 3G weld test. If you are operating in a welding group, then you should opt for some security prescription to protect on your own. The Egyptians, Greeks, as well as Romans all discovered brand-new and also differed methods of developing tools and also tools from steel by using pressure to warm or cold steel sheet to create a shape they desired. Given that ERW steel pipeline is utilized as the base product making use of welding materials, so its properties of the weld and also base metal homes have a better connection. Lots of metal roof covering items will qualify for a $500 power tax credit score which you can declare with the Internal Revenue Service. Now that the table top is completed, maintain it upside down (remember, make a steel bowl). The counterpoint between the meditative spirit behind flexing as well as the game's stringent trouble is jarring at first, but it's a matter of viewpoint. Due to the rapidly decreasing expense of sensors and computational power, the MatterFab maker was constructed to offer up steel 3D printing at an order of size less than other products that are readily available to makers today. Recuperation of the metal by means of recycling has come to be a crucial facet of the aluminium industry. In addition validate regarding the insurance policy qualifications of the metal roofing business. Procedure from the end of the channel to the new length you determined, and also note the avenue at this point. Nevertheless, not everyone inherited them and also over the course of millenia, their lengthy line of offspring led to bending being all-natural for an excellent part of the nations. Among the greatest issues I see with electricians bending avenue is that they fail to remember, or ignore, the constraints placed on the variety of degrees permissable without a joint box. ATM's, pay-at-the-pump, computers, printers, CAD/CAM software as well as other things have displaced essentially millions of blue and white collar jobs. Blog post fabrication cleaning would usually be made use of to eliminate any kind of welding warmth tint or contamination, for instance. For example, kerfing is not a suitable method for bending plywood to earn a skateboard ramp. A lot of thermometers, microscopic lens, inlays, and other instruments used by physicians and also their co-health employees are constructed from steel. As an example, a mitred 3mm leg length fillet weld is not truly possible in production, despite just what the drawings may say, as well as it is very important that the welding engineer makes sure that weld stop/ starts are not in the stress hot spots recognized in design. You can not think to grab any kind of steel roofing material by utilizing the common word- steel roofing. The temperature level of the steel where welding pass will be used influences the quality of the weld. A proper steel construction welding procedure for the aerospace sector consist of having a facility that make use of composite part manufacture as well as production line jigs in dimensions that range from table top to a total system. Cutting aluminum develops a lot of steel fragments, which can be hot, sharp, or both. Support gas is not usually essential for the fluxing welding processes (Mixed Martial Arts, FCA as well as SA) or for double sided welding. Nevertheless, whether the pain being brought on by a misaligned or changing patella (knee cap), way too much anxiety on the muscle mass and also ligaments in the knee, or other of a variety of conditions, chances are a knee support can aid. By reusing aluminium cans as well as various other items, you can minimize your influence on the setting and help in reducing air pollution. All the very best with your roof job, and also keep in mind, be positive, make educated choices. Seaming merupakan operasi bending yang digunakan untuk menyambung ujung lembaran logam sehingga membentuk benda kerja, sambungan dibentuk menggunakan roll-roll kecil yang disusun secara berurutan. Aluminium raises estrogen-related gene expression in human bust cancer cells expanded in the laboratory.30 These salts' estrogen-like impacts have actually caused their classification as a metalloestrogen. Welding whatever type it might be, it is dangerous if you not put on appropriate welding devices. However if you wish to go additionally, or you desire your boat to be of a certain layout, select light weight aluminum or steel. Paint is a crucial material that has the capacity to shield the steel roof covering for a long time. All TPS bending makers have the product radar, which can real-timely keep track of any product slipping and stretching throughout flexing. This particular welding cable television is available in a brilliant florescent jacket and it is mosting likely to cost 20 to 40% greater than various other sort of welding wires.

Plan to Storm Fence Gets More Bloody in Gaza
By Iyad Abuheweila and David M. Halbfinger, NY Times, April 27, 2018
GAZA CITY--For weeks, Palestinians protesting along the fence between Gaza and Israel have conjured up the idea of swarming across the barrier, a mass of tens of thousands of people too numerous for Israeli soldiers to arrest or even to shoot.
And Israelis have been worrying aloud about what their soldiers would do in response.
On Friday, both sides got a small sense of what that could mean when hundreds of Palestinians, urged on by a Hamas leader in a fiery midafternoon speech, rushed the security barrier at the eastern edge of Gaza City and tried to cross into Israel.
Dozens made it through a barbed-wire barrier about 30 yards inside Gaza territory, deploying wire cutters, hooks and winches. Israeli troops opened fire with a mix of live ammunition and rubber bullets, killing three people and wounding nearly 1,000 more, according to Gaza health officials.
On Saturday morning, the Health Ministry said a fourth person--a 15-year-old--had died of gunshot wound to the head. No other information on the dead teenager was immediately available.
The protest was the fifth in a series of demonstrations organized by Hamas, the Islamist group that rules Gaza. It has succeeded in ways that firing missiles into Israel has not, drawing international sympathy and attention to the Palestinian cause and the claims of the right of return for Palestinian refugees into what is now Israel.
The protests are expected to continue for three more weeks, and with neither side giving ground they appear to be headed for more violence. Already more than 40 people have been killed.
A fence that divides Israel and Gaza has become the latest flashpoint in the decades-old conflict, with Israeli soldiers unleashing lethal force against mostly unarmed Arab protesters.
Early Saturday, Israel said its fighter jets had struck six naval targets belonging to Hamas in Gaza in retaliation for the attacks on the barrier fence.
The breach of the fence was no mere protest: Those assaulting it threw firebombs and rolled burning tires at the fence to try to melt it; at least some carried pistols, according to both the Israeli military and Palestinian witnesses.
Four Palestinian protesters said they saw two men with handguns fire at Israeli soldiers and then flee. The soldiers threw a hand grenade in response, the witnesses said, wounding other people, two of them critically.
These accounts could not be verified and two other Palestinians disputed them, saying the people with handguns did not fire them. The Israeli military did not confirm that it had been fired on.
A 21-year-old man who gave his name only as Ahmed said he had seen five men shot as they pulled away part of the barbed-wire barrier, which amounts to the Israelis’ first line of defense.
When some were shot, others came forward.
For the first time in five weeks of protests, some reached the second barrier--an electrified, sensor-laden fence that marks the edge of Israeli territory--and tried to climb it or pull it down. A few hundred yards beyond it lies the Israeli farming community of Nahal Oz.
Ibrahim Shahin, 26, said he was among a group of about 12 men who cut through the barbed wire and then began climbing the electrified fence. He said he saw an Israeli soldier firing “randomly” at the group and added that three men were shot in the head. Another, he said, was shot in the abdomen and wounded.
“One of them, his last breath was on my shoulder,” Mr. Shahid said, his T-shirt soaked in blood.
One Israeli soldier threw a grenade at the group, he said. Asked how he had avoided injury, he added, “I was lucky.”
The protest is meant to culminate on May 15, when Palestinians mark the 70th anniversary of the Nakba--the “catastrophe” of Israel’s establishment and of the displacement of hundreds of thousands of their forebears who were expelled or fled from their homes.
The Israeli military acknowledged that it was surprised by the speed and tenacity of the assault, and by its location.
Colonel Conricus said that Friday’s crowds totaled 12,000 to 14,000. Reminded that Israel’s critics have denounced the country for attacking unarmed demonstrators with deadly force, Colonel Conricus said: “They aren’t the ones defending Israeli citizens from a hateful mob of thousands of Palestinians. It doesn’t matter if someone is carrying flowers if he’s tearing down the fence. That’s a violent threat.”

John Lyons’ hand-built Buick is Loud, Fast and…Whimsical
John Lyons has courage, and he has respect for what has gone before. Call him traditional. That he makes a livelihood by joining his fabrication skills and artistic talent may have a lot to do with a philosophy that urges him to build something from scratch rather than use much of anything that was ready-made or store bought. To him, that’s underlying theme of hot rodding, the roots from which it grew. And as some of you well know he’s in a distinct minority. He lists his occupation as fabricator/artist.
Look at what he likes; not any of those Brand-X critters that draw people like sleep walkers, but instead a load as unlikely as a Buick. His Riviera, shaped like a torpedo, seemed an excellent platform to go against convention and show the neighbors just how well he could car craft. At 47, he’s not starry-eyed and anxious. He’s owned the thing for 26 years, straight from Aunt Rosalie after her husband’s passing. This was a dream deal: the Riviera had been stored clean and dry for fifteen years before John got it.
A few of the things that make this car a stand-alone hero is that its Flint motor thrives and that its transmission is bound to a clutch. The back axle isn’t a 9-inch, a 12-bolt or even a 60 Dana whopper, nah; John wanted something as weird as the rest of his project: a Winters Performance quick-change (originally developed for down and dirty racing and circle track tantrums) would fit the puzzle nicely.
Throughout the journey, John wanted to surprise folks and be surprised himself. He had no blueprint for doing this except the one he made up in his head. He built the engine, the fuel injection, oiling system, the headers and exhaust tract. He built the crossmember for the transmission. He amended the suspension with adjustable weight jacks. He built the control arms. He converted the drive shaft to a one-piece design and modified the floor and frame to accommodate. He piled it with carbon fiber panels (a big reason why John was able to eliminate 1,000 pounds of curb weight, which is now approximately 3,400 pounds), and then he had to build the wings and foils critical to its visual menace. He did the clean-up bodywork. He painted the thing. Then he reclined, had a long, cool draught and looked lovingly at his progress, knowing full well that he’d never be finished with it.
John has never had the car officially timed at doing anything. It’s much more important that he can drive it sparingly on weekends, racking maybe 1,500 miles in a year. They’ve seen the car in the Syracuse Nationals Designer’s Dozen three times. They’ve seen the Riviera as an award winner at GoodGuys. John figures he’s got four years in this stage. He paid Aunt Rosalie $2,500 for it, but when we asked how much he’d invested so far, he crinkled. “Will my wife see this?”

Who: John Lyons What: 1968 Buick Riviera Where: Tillson, New York
Engine John eschewed modern notions and kept the motor “original.” He plucked the factory iron, got a 1973 455, and cleaned it up with a minimal 0.038-inch overbore to yield a displacement of 464 cubic inches. (As an aside, the thin-wall 455 weighs 150 pounds less than a comparably dressed Chevrolet 454.) The forged crankshaft, H-beam connecting rods, and JE flat-top pistons contribute to produce a snappy-throttle 13.0:1 compression ratio. He sent the block and rotating assembly to Turco’s Machine Shop in Rosendale, New York. The cats up there internally balanced the parts and executed a slew of oiling modifications, including drilling the oil galleys and feeding oil from the front and the rear of the block, as well as preparation for the custom delivery system John built. It features a dry sump pan and a Dailey Engineering pump. For a majority of the hard parts, he turned to Buick-builder mainstay T/A Performance. John completed the short-block with a Stage II solid roller camshaft (he wouldn’t tell us the specs) and installed it with a double-row Tru-Roller chain. Meanwhile, the T/A cylinder heads were CNC-ported by Heads Up Machine in High Falls, New York. John equipped them with stainless steel valves, 1.6:1 roller rocker arms, T/A retainers and valvesprings and crafted a girdle for the crankshaft. While he could have adapted a forced-air system of some sort, that would have been too easy. No, he’d rather build a one-off electronic fuel injection for it instead. He based it on a T/A SP1 intake manifold, FiTech 1,200 HP throttle body and a Bosch wide-band oxygen sensor. He sourced fuel from an Aeromotive Eliminator in-tank sender and AN -10 feed and return lines and pinned the fuel regulator at 58psi. A FiTech controller commands the EFI system. Spark jumps from MSD Pro Billet distributor and a Blaster coil. The Big Brain is an MSD CDI Digital ignition box equipped with a rev limiter. John handled waste management with long-tube headers. He built equal-length 2¼-inch primaries and merged them with 3½-inch collectors, exhaust cut-outs, and a 3½-inch system interrupted by rowdy Flowmaster 40 “silencers”. Though not known for especially fierce summers, upstate New York does swelter in August. John countered the environment with a T/A water pump, an aluminum core, and dual electronically-controlled Derale fans. He attached Poston rocker covers and a K&N element. He made all the brackets to support the accessory drive and stuck a 160-amp, 1-wire alternator in there, too. He put the bullet on the Landesman Performance dynamometer in Kingston, New York, where it shredded his expectations and rang out a chilling normally-aspirated 788hp at 6,800 rpm and 728 lb-ft of twist at 5,200 rpm. These values were enabled by straight Sunoco 110 octane. Ahhoogah!
Transmission/Drivetrain The last stick-shift Buick we can remember was schoolmate Bill Peery’s ’56 Special that would lay 100 feet of scorched cords if you just thought about it. A normal, sensible person would likely gravitate to a self-shifting transmission, too, but abnormal John couldn’t abide it. Unless he hadda a pedal for his left foot he wouldn’t be able to sleep right, so he got a Tremec TKO-600 five-speed, made a custom crossmember to hold it up and converted the center-bearing driveshaft to an aluminum one-piece construction. He swapped in a T/A aluminum flywheel and covered it with a McLeod dual disc clutch assembly abetted by a McLeod hydraulic clutch release. The drive axle is a revelation: a Winters Performance quick-change sports a 3.64:1 ratio, a limited-slip differential and full-floating axle ends.
Chassis / Suspension Before the chassis rehab began, John set the engine rearward nearly a foot. Displacing mass would enhance weight distribution for a much more neutral handling attitude. This was not possible unless John put a up new firewall. A good start to be sure, but he marched on with ideas of his own. He built the suspension from Grand National stock car spindle pins, hand-made aluminum control arms, Jeg’s double-adjustable coilovers with 1,000 lb-in springs, an Addco 1¼-inch anti-sway bar, and a big bag of Heim joints. To accommodate the Flaming River power steering rack, John modified the big crossmember. Currently, alignment settings are -2-deg. camber, 9-deg. caster and -1/16- to +1/16-inch toe. The back half of the big Bu’ is held up by Jeg’s adjustable coilovers with a 450 lb-in springs. An Addco 1-inch diameter bar attends. John didn’t quit the job until he’d posted a pinion-mounted Panhard bar. These particular changes have pulled the Buick five inches closer to Mother Earth.
Body Since the car had been stored high and dry for centuries, beyond an odd door ding or two, its body was pristine. John assumed responsibility. He shaved the door handles, brushed the trim, and built a carbon fiber hood, deck lid and front bumper along with those craaazy splitters/struts and rear spoiler. Well, somebody had to paint it. John looked around, flicked his eyes left and right and said there’s only me here now. He liked the Kirker Automotive Finishes Carbon Fiber Gray and applied it as base/clear that he color sanded and buffed out. This just in: the irrepressible John sent images, “I’m currently working on carbon fenders and quarter panels to fit my new 19×13.5 wheels and 355/30 tires.” You gotta love this guy.
Interior Yeah, it’s not pretty but it’s a little dirty and a lot functional. Seats don’t match? Who needs two expensive Sparco buckets when the original leather-covered passenger chair will do? The mood is subdued; color is banished for the reluctant sheen of metal. John built an aluminum gauge panel and underscored it with a lower car-wide stripe. He arranged custom Arctic White Auto Meter gauges. He slicked out the console, made a notch for the Tremec shifter. He didn’t include air conditioning or a sound system (“couldn’t hear it anyway”). He’s captured by Sparco 5-point harness; he centers on the NRG carbon fiber steering wheel and does that lovely dance on pedals that he built from stainless steel.
Brakes / Wheels / Tires Big ol’ nasty beast Buick needs big ol’ nasty beast wheels. John found LB 288 hoops at L&B Forged. They’re three-piece giants that spread 20×11 (6.5-inch backspacing, front; 6.0-inch backspacing, rear) and carry Bridgestone 295/30 RE 71R treads. Energy burners are modest: John applied drilled Wilwood 12-3/8-inch rotors and Grand National Stock Car six-piston calipers to the front and followed them up with Wilwood four-piston, 12-inch discs. They are attended by a Wilwood master cylinder and proportioning valve.
