Alchemist Girl Track 5: 絶対天秤卵 | Absolute Libra Egg

Hello, here is my translation my the track #5 in Seazer’s latest Utena album Shoujo Renkinjutsushi Tamago Bara Monogatari. Well, I guess when translating from such a different language like Japanese and from lyrics like Seazer’s is better to call it an interpretation. In any case, thanks a lot to @jewlwpet for helping me with the katakana in this track and for catching some mistakes. Also thanks to @empty-movement because their scans saved me the trouble of transliterating the Japanese lyrics myself.

I would like to clarify that 天秤, translated as libra, refers to scales and not the Zodiac sign (althought it is part of the Japanese word for the libra sign 天秤宮). There is also lots of Classical Japanese. More notes at the bottom! Feel free to add your comments if you wish so.

Edit: @youzicha noticed a mistake in the the second-to-last line before the outro. Fixed that and the corresponding anotation.

*In this song 場所 (basho) is pronounced as 所 (tokoro), both are words that mean “place” and there isn’t really much difference between the two. What could this choice mean?? I have no idea.

**This, this little phrase kept me awake because I couldn’t make any sense of it until I found it as an entry in various Japanese dictionaries, they all had the same explanation and I wasn’t sure I was getting it. So I asked for help in a Japanese Study group page with a link to one of the dictionaries. A Japanese man told me he had never heard of it before, but explained the definition as "It's something like your boss (the emperor) knows everything so you can't cheat."

Shortly thereafter, a Chinese speaker commented the following: “ It's a four character phrase (Japanese=四字熟語 , Chinese=四字成語) that originates from an ancient Chinese classic of governance and ruling called 資治通鑑. Which can be roughly translated as Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance. 万里 refers to the ministers being far away from court and 階前 refers to the place in front of the throne of the emperor. The phrase is used metaphorically to mean "although were are ten thousand miles apart, we are still close to each other at heart." (my weird translation). This is the original text that it is from "卿到彼為政甚善，朕皆知之，勿謂其遠！此階前萬里也" According to the Japanese link you provided, they claim that the phrase originates in another Chinese text written in the same period called 十八史略. I don't know if that is true, but I'm certainly more willing to trust the Chinese sources on this because I have had plenty of experiences using Japanese sources for Chinese things and those sources have often been completely wrong.”

Given its Chinese origin, I’m also inclined to trust the Chinese sources, but I also can’t know what kind of information Seazer has on this phrase and it would be too awkward to translate either meaning, so yeah I just left it like that and made you read this instead......

*** This is pronounced as 生み (umi), the noun for birth, hovewer, it’s written with the kanji 孵, used in the verb 孵す (kaesu) which means to hatch/to incubate, as well as the verb 孵る (kaeru), which means to hatch out
