How Gurbaksh Chahal is Helping People During Covid-19?
Indian-American businessman Gurbaksh Chahal built his business during his school days. At the age of 18, he got rid of poverty with an online advertising company and started his advertising empire. At the age of 25, he became a billionaire. Having been in Silicon Valley for years, he has shifted his focus in recent years and began a business in Hong Kong. He brought about 10,000 masks to Hong Kong from India when the city was in a panic epidemic and donated 50,000 boxes of Express Giving test kits to charities, hoping to alleviate the suffering of disadvantaged groups.
Gurbaksh Chahal, the CEO of ProcureNet, a pharmaceutical materials and vaccine consumables company, donated about 50,000 boxes of rapid test kits produced by its subsidiary Medriva to the Community Chest of Hong Kong, Caritas, Organizations such as Pok Oi or Red Cross Hospital distribute them to those in need and front-line workers, and recently launched a plan to permit charities to buy test kits at an ultra-low price.
At the beginning of the epidemic, Hong Kong fell into a shortage of masks. When Chahal was in India at the time, he contacted several local suppliers and purchased 10,000 N95 masks, and sent them to Hong Kong. At that time, India banned the export of masks. The two still decided to take the risk of sending the masks back to Hong Kong, which was ultimately distributed to low-income families, the disabled, and the blind through three charities.

The 39-year-old businessman used to live in the United States and resided in Hong Kong since he founded RedLotus, a start-up online advertising company focusing on AI artificial intelligence, three years ago. 
Chahal was born in Punjab, India in 1982. His father decided to emigrate to the United States, and he and his mother brought twenty-five dollars to San Jose, the United States.
Chahal started his business with a computer by inserting advertisements on web pages and charging users for clicks. He recruited advertising companies and website platforms, and the process stumbled, but it did not stop him from showing his business talent. After half a year, he earned $100,000. In 2000, he sold the company for $40 million, when he was only eighteen years old.
In 2004, Gurbaksh Chahal founded BlueLithium, which focuses mainly on targeted advertising. Three years later, Yahoo bought the company for $300 million, making him twenty-five years. He became a billionaire at the age of 10, and in 2010 he founded Radium One, an online advertising company, whose market value was as high as $500 million. 
The epidemic has hit the global economy hard. It is not known when it will recover. The road ahead is doubtful but the road to success is made up of failures and setbacks. Gurbaksh Chahal’s primary goal was to bring more manufacturers to take part, sell anti-epidemic products at the most reasonably priced price, and work together to help Hong Kong get out of the epidemic.

The answer I seem to get is it can be statistically proven that males are more aggressive,speed and get into more accidents. Can't afford Health Insurance...?
I'm looking for advice...and hopefully someone to tell me that I'm not screwed. My boss graciously offered to find group insurance for all of her employees and she is willing to pay 50% of the premiums. The problem is that she went with the most expensive plan on the market (that I've seen) and I simply can't afford it. The premium is $340 a month, so I'd be paying $170 which isn't bad...but the copays are at least +20% on everything and doctor visits range from $35 to $55 a visit, so I wouldn't be able to afford to use my health coverage often. It also doesn't include dental, which is what I really wanted/needed. I am 21 years old (and all of my coworkers are in their 20s), so I don't really understand why the payments are so high. I'm right in the midst of paying off student loans, I don't get paid very much, and I was hoping to start saving money to purchase a car and be able to go back to school. I was going to use my income tax return as a down payment on a car, but if I opt out of healthcare this year at least a fourth of that return will be taken as the fine imposed to coerce people to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. I seriously don't know what to do. Neither of my parents have health insurance, so I can't be tacked onto their coverage. TESLA FAILS TO MEET MODEL 3 PRODUCTION GOALS: Tesla built only 260 of its much-hyped Model 3s in Q3 2017, far below its production target of 1,600 Model 3s for the quarter, The Wall Street Journal reports. Tesla has a history of missing its own production targets, but the miss indicates that the company faces enormous challenges ahead with its first foray into mass-market vehicles.
The Model 3 is the linchpin in Tesla’s strategy to transition from a niche, luxury automaker to a mass-market one that competes with the likes of GM and Ford. Tesla’s Model S sedans and Model X SUVs are luxury vehicles priced well out of the reach of the average consumer, and Tesla has yet to make more than 100,000 vehicles in a single year. In contrast, the $35,000 Model 3 is a mass market sedan that Tesla plans to produce at much higher volumes than the Model S or Model X.
Tesla has said that it expects Model 3 deliveries to follow a sharp S curve, just as Model S and Model X deliveries did after those vehicles were launched.  The electric automaker’s previous guidance said that it expected to produce only 100 Model 3s in August and 1,500 in September, with production increasing sharply to reach 5,000 per week by the end of the year. Following that production timeline, the company advised customers placing Model 3 reservations this past summer to expect at least a year-long wait for their vehicles. For context, more than 450,000 customers have paid a $1,000 deposit to reserve one already.
The miss raises serious questions about when those customers will receive their Model 3s. Tesla said that some manufacturing subsystems at its California and Nevada factories took longer to get up and running than expected, and added that it is confident it can deal with the issues in the near term. Even if that’s the case, the company will have to accelerate production efforts to meet its guidance — a tall task given its ambitious targets. That will make Q4 production crucial to ensuring the company doesn’t fall too far behind its customers’ delivery expectations, particularly as mainstream automakers like Ford and GM start to accelerate their own electric vehicle production efforts. More than 63,000 customers have already cancelled their reservations, and further production delays could make that number rise in the coming months.
INDIAN RIDE-HAILING COMPANY OLA CLOSING IN ON NEW FUNDING: Ola, India’s largest ride-hailing company, is close to completing a new $2 billion funding round, according to Bloomberg. Investors in the funding round reportedly include Chinese internet holding company Tencent, Japanese telco Softbank, and a handful of US institutional investors. It’s not yet known what this new funding round would value the company at.
Founded back in 2010, Ola quickly rose to the top of the Indian ride-hailing market and cracked into the market’s immense potential. The firm was founded in Mumbai by a pair of former Microsoft employees, and by late 2014 it counted 40,000 cabs in its network, 33,000 registered users, and $250-$300 million in gross bookings on an annualized basis. Since then, the company has expanded to other cities, helping it earn about $120 million USD in 2016.
However, the company faces immense competition from Uber, which regards India as its second most important market. The world’s largest ride-hailing company moved into the country in 2013. Since then, Uber has risen to become Ola’s chief competitor, and numbers suggest it has pulled nearly even with the domestic company. Ola had 5.9 million monthly active users in the country in May 2017, while Uber had 5.5 million MAU, according to App Annie. Uber has achieved this growth through aggressive driver recruitment, expanding into smaller cities, and undercutting Ola’s prices.
The new funding could help Ola fight back against Uber’s expansion and move towards more sustainable growth. Ola lost about $350 million USD last year, a figure it’s trying to reduce by scaling back incentives for drivers and discounts to customers. With this new funding, the firm will likely look to broaden its reach within India — the country’s top seven or eight cities account for much of the company’s growth. Attracting users in smaller cities could help the company expand its customer base and put it on a more sustainable path for growth, rather than engaging in a price war with Uber in the country’s largest metropolitan areas.

WALMART ACQUIRES SAME-DAY DELIVERY STARTUP PARCEL: Walmart announced that it is acquiring Brooklyn-based startup Parcel in order to offer same-day delivery in New York City, Recode reports. Parcel handles same-day deliveries for a variety of companies in New York City, including Bonobos, which Walmart recently acquired, as well as meal-kit delivery companies like Chef’d. Walmart and Parcel did not disclose the price for the acquisition, although one source told Recode the price tag was less than $10 million.
 Parcel offers a software platform for managing last-mile deliveries in New York, allowing companies to deliver goods more quickly and efficiently. The acquisition will allow Walmart and Jet.com customers in New York City to get same-day delivery on grocery orders and general merchandise. Parcel’s platform allows companies and their customers to receive real-time updates on delivery times. Additionally, Parcel has compiled data about every building the company has delivered to in New York City that can help speed up deliveries by giving couriers information such as the location of service entrances. Deliveries are made from Parcel’s warehouse in Brooklyn and carried out by the company’s fleet of leased delivery trucks operated by professional couriers.
Same-day delivery is becoming a competitive advantage for retailers. One study released earlier this year by research firm L2 found that one quarter of US consumers surveyed would abandon a shopping cart if same-day delivery was not offered. Additionally, a recent McKinsey report predicted that same-day delivery will account for more than $200 billion in online sales — nearly 25% of the entire US e-commerce market — by 2025. Walmart could expand Parcel’s platform and services to more cities to grow its same-day delivery network to match Amazon Prime Now, which provides two-hour deliveries in more than 30 US cities. Walmart’s move follows Target’s recent acquisition of Grand Junction, another company that offers a platform for managing last-mile deliveries. The data and analytics capabilities in these platforms can help these retailers optimize their urban deliveries for speed and efficiency, making same-day delivery more viable and cost-effective.
In other news...
GM will introduce two new electric vehicles (EVs) in the US over the next eighteen months and 20 around the world within six years, according to The Wall Street Journal. However, it’s unknown what type of vehicles they would launch, or what they’d cost. The move comes as rival Ford created a new team to help it form partnerships with suppliers for EVs, a sign that the largest automakers in the US are significantly ramping up their efforts to expand their EV lineups.
Arity, an automotive data analytics startup owned by Allstate, launched Shared Mobility Solutions, a new software platform designed to help car-sharing, ride-sharing, and ride-hailing companies boost the efficiency of their services. The tool can analyze vehicle data on fuel consumption, miles driven, and maintenance costs, as well as consumer mobility behavior such as the time, location, and length of rides. The company hopes Shared Mobility Solutions will help clients reduce costs, decrease the down time between rides, and improve driver retention.
US trucking demand has been surging, straining fleet capacity at large operators and leading to rapid increases in pricing. Booming demand is being driven by several factors including e-commerce growth, higher manufacturing output, and and increased activity in the housing and construction sectors. The hurricanes that hit Texas and Florida last month only exacerbated shortages, causing major volatility in spot trucking rates. Per mile rates for shipments from Charlotte to Florida jumped 42 cents to $3.32 the week of September 16. With capacity at large truck operators dwindling, shippers need to tap into the growing number of small operators with just a handful of trucks. This could lead to growing use of platforms like Uber Freight and Convoy that can help connect shippers with these smaller trucking fleets.

Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion passes, style remains”, and it is because of this phenomenon that we have fast fashion and mass production.
As mere consumerists, it is easy to ignore how fashion in one country and manufactured often under harsh conditions in another. How many of us actually consider our clothes and its impact on the environment? How many of us are aware or take an actual hand in manufacturing fabrics? As consumerists, do we patronize ethical and sustainable fashion? One of the major causes of environmental degradation is excluding environmental costs from market prices.
 “Cotton farmers in Vidarbha, a region that used to be known as India’s cotton belt, face the grim reality of crop failures, sinking global cotton prices and crushing debts. More than 20,000 have killed themselves in the past decade and Vidarbha is now referred to as India’s ‘suicide belt’.
        “Meanwhile, the current oil shortage means additional concerns over the lifecycle of synthetics derived primarily from petrochemicals. Unlike natural fibres, their source is not renewable and they are not biodegradable” (Dagliden, 2010).
For the past twenty years, fashion has been all about the next five minutes. Incidentally, Suzanne Lee, Founder BIOCOUTURE & BIOFABRICATE from New York, Chief Creative Officer Modern Meadow, TED Senior Fellow, NASA/NIKE Launch Innovator, is looking to the future of fashion for the next fifty years. In order to discover what that may look like, she partnered with bioengineers. Where does one begin to innovate fashion in order to be ethical and sustainable?
Leo Strauss president and CEO, John Anderson says, ‘‘For the fashion industry to be sustainable economically, it must be sustainable socially and environmentally too”.
For Lee, that meant rethinking the raw materials used to create fabric. What if, you could grow your own clothes?
Thanks to her efforts, plant-based and biodegradable fashion that was once science fiction is now science fact. Besides this revolutionary idea, “bio-couture” does not generate waste. With the sole ingredients being green tea, sugar, acetic acid like cider vinegar, and bacteria cultures combined with yeast, the garments are totally harmless and even edible. It is recyclable, which means new fabrics can be made from the waste sugar-water mixtures from the food or drinks industry. No light is required. This concoction takes two to three weeks to develop, after which it will form a mat-like substance, the result of which can range from transparent paper-like material to flexible leather-like fabric depending on the mixture. First, green tea and sugar is combined and cooled to below 30 degrees Celsius. It is poured into a container in controlled temperature. The bacteria feed on the sugar and produce a waste product of cellulose fibers, a product of fermentation, which forms a mat on the surface. The mat is ninety percent water and is quite heavy. It is washed in cold soapy water and is left under the sun to evaporate, leaving the fibers to become more compact. It smells sugary at first but the scent fades away after a while. It can be sewn conventionally or formed around three-dimensional shapes while wet. Resources for the raw ingredients are not a problem since “ninety percent of the planet is covered in cellulose material” (Lee).
The color black can be achieved by ion oxidizing upon the contact of metal with the fabric. Being very absorbent, it is easy to stain the fabric with fruit and vegetable pulps and absorb dye in one dip, whereas traditional fabric takes up to eighteen dips to achieve a dark color. This fabric, therefore, minimizes the use of toxic chemicals. She also discovered that indigo is a natural preservative of cellulose fibers, preventing it from other microorganisms and extending the lifespan of the fabric.
Now the questions arise, can this be mass produced? Is it economical? Is it practical for daily wear? As Lee says, these are still “concept garments, not on the market, and still very experimental”. However, she believes that their product will just get better as they continue to investigate methods to redesign the bacteria cells in order to produce water repellant and skin nourishing properties into the fabric. Nevertheless, when they are finally able to develop the material, it can solve many of the issues related to the fashion industry such as “rapidly rising commodity prices, vast quantities of harmful pesticides and chemicals being used in the materials, and clothing filling landfills” (Lee, 2012).
Finally, Lee provides simple steps in order to assure sustainability and ethics in fashion:
“1. Educate employees throughout the structure of the company. ‘There needs to be an understanding throughout the company that ‘we need to change’,’ says Suzanne Lee.
“2. Look at the materials you use. ‘Are they sustainable? Brands need to research and resource things that are sustainable; start with the materials,’ says Lee.
“3. Check what happens at the end of life with products. Is it possible for consumers to return items? ‘Can products be upcycled or recycled?’ Lee asks.
“4. Make customers aware. Some luxury industry players are already reusing expensive materials. ‘I think that’s good practice but they need to make customers part of what they get up to and help them understand why sustainability is a really good thing,’ says Lee.
“5. As LS:N Global has reported, the Turbulent Teens decade will see brands teaming up with scientists. ‘That gives you an advantage over other designers or other companies. If you’re already talking to them, you’re already working for the future, and the next generation of products,’ Lee says” (Dagliden, 2010).
                She then challenges others to grow more objects. For instance, there are people coming up with liquid silk that can be placed into a 3D printer to form a pair of spectacles. Some are taking waste crops from something like carrots and turning it into a carbon fiber-like material to create something tough like a skateboard.
Green tea fabric isn’t the only one to come up with ecofriendly couture. When fashion meets culinary arts, the doors to innovation only multiply. There are currently at least nine organic fashion alternatives. Emily Crane, a Kingston University fashion student, has partnered with The Fat Duck, a “three-Michelin-starred restaurant owned by avant-garde food scientist Heston Blumenthal” (Chua, 2012), to come up with fabric brewed from gelatin and seaweed.
On the other hand, University of Western Australia came up with a project called Microb’be to produce fabric from red wine, the result of which resembles the consistency of cotton. However, Acetobacter produces vinegar, which despite the stench is more environmental friendly than genetically modified cotton.
Fortunately, German designer Anke Domaske discovered a way to recycle spoiled milk into an odorless silk derived from casein, a protein found in milk, from mammals. Unlike other milk-based fibers, Qmilk uses up two liters of water per kilogram of fiber, requires no harmful chemicals, and leaves behind zero waste.
For a sweet alternative, Samantha Murray, a New Zealand designer, developed “Sweet Suspension”, a collection of fruit-flavored dresses which “combines the shapes of classical sculpture with the “texture of gummy lollies”” for her final year at Massey University.
Similarly,
“Eric Meursing and Marjolein Wintjes, owners of De Culinaire                                                            Werkplaats, a design-studio-cum-restaurant in Amsterdam,                                                           built their reputation on edible pastry wrappers made from                                                               dehydrated fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Described   as a                                                                 “novel eating initiative and experience,” De Culinaire Werkplaats                                                   draws inspiration from seemingly unrelated sources, from                                                                 architecture to emotions. “Taste the Unwearables,” a series of                                                      fabrics made from vegetables, fruits, and herbs, is part call to eat                                                more greens, part commentary on the ephemeral nature of fashion”                                            (par. 7).
Diana Kovacheva, a designer from Central Saint Martins takes the idea “fashion passes” literally by creating Transient Consumables or edible clothing.
Fabrics aren’t the only things being organically produced. From Central Saint Martins, London, Yung Ju Do, a fashion student, has come up with compostable jewelry.
In addition, Corole Colet has developed Biolace (lace from plant roots) via “cellular programming of morphogenesis in plant systems” (par. 8).
Another innovative idea was realized when Sophie Mather, former head of innovation at Nike Asia, and industry expert in sustainable textile, worked with the Yeh Group, a Bangkok based textile manufacturer. It all started with a feast on watermelons in China when she realized that the water the fruits thrived on were toxic. “Every year, water dyeing textiles dispose the equivalent of half the Mediterranean sea into rivers and streams” (AEG, 2014). Hence, she reinvented dyeing without a single drop of water, which she called “dry dye”. Dry dye makes use of highly compressed gas known as super critical carbon dioxide.  This process uses up 50 percent less energy and chemicals. There are seven machines in commercial use today with the capacity to dye one million yards of fabric per year.
On the other hand, Patagonia, a company based in Ventura, California advocates “Buy less, Care more”. In the United Kingdom alone, people own thirty billion pounds of clothing they haven’t worn once in a year. What Patagonia seeks to promote is the habit of buying only what you need and taking responsibility to repair one’s own clothes instead of buying new ones. They also sell repair kits and release accompanying how-to videos. Beyond teaching their customers to reuse, they instill greater value for their products suggesting that fixing the product themselves will make the customers see the product not just as something they bought but something they can claim ownership of.
In retrospect, Nancy Tilbury of Studio XO, a company that intersects technology, music, and fashion together, concludes,
“Fashion future is actually fashion past”. It’s about going back to becoming producers working with primary producers.
