Feysand: The TRUE and ONLY ACOTAR Hades and Persephone Retelling

For those who are unfamiliar with the story of Hades of Persephone, here is a little run down:

Hades aka God of Underworld and the Dead, God of Hidden Wealth, God of Darkness of Night, One of the Most Powerful Gods in Greek Mythology

Persephone aka Goddess of Spring, Goddess of the Underworld, Bringer/Goddess of Death, Goddess of Seasons

Hades was in love with Persephone and kidnaps abducts her to the Underworld while she was in blooming flowers

Hades tricks (or bargains) Persephone into spending a certain amount of time in the underworld

Persephone becomes the Goddess of The Underworld, a title that is equal to that of Hades who is one of the most powerful Gods and rules along side him which was a novel concept in Greek mythology

Since apparently this needs to be spelled out for certain people to stop proclaiming that their ship *cough cough Elriel couch cough* is the Hades and Persephone retelling, let’s go step by step into how Feysand is 100% SJM’s Hades and Persephone story:

Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court and the Most Powerful High Lord in History

Feyre, a bride of Spring, has all the powers of the High Lords (aka has all the powers of the seasons), and is High Lady of The Night Court

In the story of Feysand, Rhys is in love with Feyre and kidnaps her from Spring, a place of blooming flowers

Rhys tricked Feyre into a bargain so she has to spend time with him in his world for a certain amount of time

Feyre becomes Rhys’ equal as High Lady of the Night Court, something that is novel to their world

And before anyone says this is all up to interpretation, this line in ACOMAF literally exists:

SJM explicitly is saying Feysand in a Hades and Persephone retelling here and if you think otherwise, you’re just playing yourself.

And to those that are insistent that Elriel can still be a Hades and Persephone retelling, I’ll kindly remind you that one of your main arguments against Gwynriel is that you believe it won’t happen since it will be like Nessian 2.0. So which is it?

Elriel and Feysand are both a Hades and Persephone retelling and SJM will write the Feysand story 2.0 with Elriel including the same elements that you guys love to harp on?

Or SJM won’t do a retelling of the same story?

The hypocrisy.

Also friendly reminder: Persephone thrived in the darkness of the underworld and her name literally means bringer of death; Elain looks like she’s dead in the darkness of the night court, gets violently ill over death, and her name literally means light. She is a great many things, but she is not Persephone.

So... it's 3am and I might be delirious and delulu, so this'll be a very quick dive, but I just couldn't help but see some parallels and connections that I felt the need to share no matter how far-fetched😅

If/say Azriel is Death & darkness aka Hades.

And Elain is the lovely fawn of Spring aka Persephone...

And Mor is Leuce who was Hades' first love who had similarities with/was friends with/an epiteth of Persephone much like Mor and Elain has Golden/Sunshine etc. similarities

Then could our resident red-headed nymph Gwyneth be... Minthe?

And diving deeper... Cocytus, which literally means "lamentation" (which is, you know, also a special kind of song 👀), the underground river/lake where Minthe is from...

And just who lives in an underground lake? Koschei.

I don't really want Gwyneth to turn out to be a villain, and I especially do not want her to join the drama and give Gw*nrie/s and the necklace fiasco anymore validity than they're due, but she does have suspicious qualities that I know many are already familiar with...

All in all, this just further gives quite another meaning to secret, lovely beauty in my eyes 👀

Should I post my multi-paragraph in depth explanation as to why grumpy x sunshine is my favorite ship dynamic/trope? Especially because it is in so many of my favorite series, and it is so pervasive in our culture to be one of our favorite dynamics. It's almost always one person who is shrouded in darkness and death, and another character who is just life and purity, and it's brilliant, it's Hades and Persephone, it's Azriel and Elain, it's Phantom and Christine, and it is just such a good dynamic and I have so many thoughts about it.

As if Feysand wasn’t a partial retelling of hades and Persephone? As if other couples from CC or ToG aren’t opposites?

Regardless of opposites, Azriel and Elain indeed are on the same wavelength. They very much are similar to one another. They have a lot in common and lot that they can relate to together. Aesthetic or materialistic differences don’t directly equate to “they can’t be mates/together”.

I mean…

The boy who is never chosen and girl who never gets to choose?

The boy and girl who have to find their voice together?

The boy and girl who are both more quiet and subtle types than anything or anyone in the IC?

The boy and girl who are both overlooked by everyone just because “Elain is Elain” or (in his brother’s minds) “Az is Az”?

The boy and girl who have both loved selflessly yet have been rejected by those loves?

The boy and girl who both have metaphorical restraints on each other because of someone else? (Rhys and Lucien)

The boy and girl who harbor abilities that no one else understands, yet have an understanding of each other’s abilities more than others do?

The list goes on.

They understand each other.

I really want people to stop looking at these multidimensional characters from only one perspective or from surface level and actually THINK.

Elain is stronger than some of you think. Strength doesn’t always have to be brute strength. Theres a reason why Feyre claimed Elain had a strength no one else did. And that strength just so happens to be something that Azriel admires, if I’m to glean anything from his character.

But anyway, what do I know? I’m just an average elriel lol. But per the author’s words…

Let us not forget the Book of Breathings foretold of ROT and bloom and BONE.

Gardening and tending the land isn’t just about growing things and cultivating life. It’s about reaping from the land, taking from it, too. It’s about deciding when to cut back old growth to let new life bloom. It’s about rooting out the rot and the decay and accepting that death is a natural part of the cycle. Things die, only to grow back stronger, harder, more beautiful.

And I think this duality represented within gardening, this cultivation of the life cycle, death included, perfectly describes who Elain Archeron truly is. She is both the gentle grower of things and the reaper who sees where the rot takes hold and clears it away. The trembled fawn AND the fanged beast. Lovely and beautiful, but deadly beneath the surface.

Persephone was both the Goddess of Spring and the Queen of the Underworld, after all.

ACOTAR Couples & Halloween Costumes: Headcanons 👻 🎃

Feysand: Feyre and Rhys definitely have a cute family costume planned with Nyx, but as soon as they leave him with a babysitter, they have to be the hottest couple in a 25-mile radius. Think Mr. & Mrs. Smith, think mafia AU, think Feyre in a slutty dress and Rhys unable to keep his hands off her

Nessian: Nesta and Cassian start planning their costumes at least a year in advance. No expense is spared, no detail is overlooked. Sure, they get into semi-heated arguments leading up to their favourite day of the year, but it’s well worth it. My vote goes to them being sexy pirates, or a gender bent Hades and Persephone.

Elucien: The thing about Elain Archeron is that she will always be that bitch, so well-dressed that people can’t help but stare. Lucien LOVES it! He’s also more than happy to take off his shirt at Elain’s request. A Greek god (or warrior) and goddess definitely works for their day court vibes (bonus points if Elain is Aphrodite).

Azris: Eris and Azriel famously refuse to put effort into Halloween. Azriel has been known to throw on cat ears. Eris has worn a mask or used fake blood on more than one occasion. Yet, somehow they end up surprising everyone by dressing up as a cop (Eris) and sexy criminal (Azriel). Yes, the handcuffs are fully functional. And, yes, Azriel wears a crop top.

Emorie: Our fave girlies have one goal on Halloween, and that’s to look ridiculously hot. Mor lives by the fact that “hoes don’t get cold” and usually makes a costume out of lingerie. Emerie’s been known to follow her lead or dress in something’s that more comfy. I think they would absolutely slay as an angel and demon.

Bonus addition: Emerie as a witch (and Mor can tag along as a black cat)

Gwynriel: These two always go with a costume that’s ridiculously niche or nerdy. Sometimes, Gwyn will get Azriel to dress up as her favourite male characters. Sometimes, she’ll wear a gorgeous costume on her own (and Azriel will just be there, looking at her with hearts in his eyes). Batman and catwoman is a fan favourite, but Gwyn loves the year she found her new favourite book and got them to dress up as a priestess and shadowsinger.

Elriel: Elain is hot (see above), and Azriel is more than happy to take a supporting role when it comes to couples costumes. Elain wants to wear a fancy dress? Azriel will offer to hold her purse. It’s an Elain Archeron world and Azriel is loving every second of just being in it. I feel like a flower and gardener costume would be cute couples costume for them.

Jassa: Jurian and Vassa are here to have fun. All of their costumes are easy-going and definitely bought last-minute, but they still look amazing. They’re known to find things around the house, and wear a costume that they insist is a pun. Some years, they remember they have these race car outfits at the back of their closet.

Gwynlain: Gwyn and Elain are for the Pinterest girlies. They always have the most gorgeous costumes, and their makeup is impeccably done. Dare I say, they’re the second hottest couple in a 25-mile radius. My brain is literally malfunctioning at the thought of them dressing up like Bloom and Flora from Winx Club.

Tamlin next love interest should a women in her late 30's whose been in a healthy relationship before meeting Tamlin. A Sophie to his Howl if you will, who isn't afraid to tell him how she feels and who pushes Tamlin to not only talk about their problems but to also fix the problems.

Her name could be Janet, and she could have been born to a human lord but she ran away from her arranged marriage to elope with a blacksmith. She moved closer to the wall and picks up the trade of a healer to help with moeny and her husband could die a few years before the start of acotar that way she's can be out of her grieving stage and won't feel as guilty for falling for Tamlin.

Speaking of Tamlin, because of his own trauma and grief of losing everything, spring could not be functioning properly or the humans could be trapped in winter well beyond the usual time.

Janet could see this and decide to sneak into the fairy world to fix the problem only to find the ruined spring court and monster tamlin.

The two agree to work together to rebuilding both their worlds, the spring court turns into an different more wild form of a fairy court (aka what a fairy court should be) and the human world becomes more accepting of fae.

Janet uses both her skills as a healer and the skills she was taught to run house holds to repair the court with Tamlin skills of a warrior and his magic to not only fix his court but to protect the human world too from evil faires, creating acotar worlds wild hunt.

Over time Janet would gain the respect of not only the court but of the mother who would turn Janet into a fae and the first real high lady of not only the spring court, but of any other courts in fairy land.

She basically become a persephone or gaia fae where she has domain over all of plants, while tamlin domain over all beasts, and she makes new plants to cure diseases and whatnot for humans/fae.

She and Tamlin obviously fall in love, but their not fated mates, which makes Tamlin worry because ya'know, it's a big deal for him. But Janet dosen’t care, so she's like; "I'm not going to have kids with another fae because a pot thinks we could have powerful children."

Oh, also Tamlin and Lucian repair their friendship, while Elaine and Janet bound over flowers and baking, so Elaine decides to leave the night court to becomes a lady of Janet’s court and marries Lucian in the process.

Absolutely fawning over Elain and Koschei right now - as much as I love elucien, this is the true Hades and Persephone pairing.

There is such an allure I have for Elain and I can't explain why exactly - she just has such a soft undertone of brutality. A certain edge to who she is as a character that it almost puts me on edge, but in such a way that I can't stop thinking about her.
