i know we’ve been discussing an elf phantom or elf raoul but as someone who has worked on multiple productions of spongebob the musical since it went to broadway, i’d like to propose: elf squidward.
i know how that sounds but here me out:
stewart hasn’t played a goofy villain in AGES. i don’t think the squip honestly counts as that much of a goofy villain, but nevertheless. he’s played nazis. he’s played a cop. let this man get up on stage with two extra legs and skrelt “i’m not a loser.”
you’re telling me he would not absolutely eat the tap number? the clarinet solo?
alternatively, he would play an incredible plankton. get this man in a green sequin suit and let him run wild.
i know that both of these roles are tenor parts but a man can dream. a man can dream.

wanted to drop in & share this watercolour i did for stewart for the last show i saw, monday the 19th.
long story short, my flight was supposed to leave sunday morning. it was delayed & then cancelled at 8pm. needless to say, i had some extra time on my hands while trapped in london gatwick.
unfortunately i only had my travel watercolour set and one brush and a couple hours combined :,)
all that being said, here it is!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and stewart insisted on taking a photo with it :,)
Tumblr media
this big sweet man holds my whole heart at the moment. he said it was going on his wall which?? for something that was painted in lgw is high praise.
i mentioned to him that it was painted in an airport, apologising if that lent itself to the liminal sense the entire piece gives off. he responded that the uncanny valley-ness was accurate to the space javert is in for the second act — very liminal and isolated.
wanted to share with everyone in the baker boy alliance :)

folks, i thought the stewart clarke hyperfixation had gone away — alas. finals ended, les mis came through my city, and my poor girlfriend has spent the last week being lambasted with les mis fun facts.
all that to say, desperately trying to recover from the art class i had to take for my art degree and find the joy in art again. might be posting a bit more here, just sketches & watercolours.
terribly jealous of everyone who’s getting to spend the winter season curled up in the seats at the sondhiem theatre, but i’ll survive.
much love!

got the wonderful opportunity to see the les mis north america tour last week & last night in dallas! some thoughts:
- nick cartell’s falsetto was absolutely angelic. maybe the best rendition of “bring him home” i’ve ever heard
- haley dortch (fantine) was beyond amazing. she genuinely took my breath away both nights. her stage presence was understated but deeply powerful
- kyle adams (grantaire) had a wonderful connection with gavroche. they were all but inseparable and it made both of their deaths absolutely heart rending
all in all, the show was amazing. crossing my fingers than this means it will be coming back to broadway in the next few years.
a final note: stewart clarke’s javert, the inimitable elf cop, is still hands down the best i have ever seen. i would sell my soul to the great old ones in a heartbeat to see him perform even just one more time.
