ENL Writer’s Commentary: Chapter 6

In his teens, Obi-Wan thought he knew what made a perfect Jedi and thought he'd been a failure, barely scraping by. As an adult, he'd questioned some of that, outside the influence of his Master's constant criticism, but he'd still done his best to outwardly project what he thought a Jedi should be. He'd assumed everyone had known it for the lie it was, but apparently the one person who needed that knowledge most never had.

It was sacrilege, in this time, to think such things. Even the age at which Luke and Rey started training would have completely disqualified them, Anakin too old at nine despite blazing like Tatooine's twin suns in the Force.

This whole part is both my attempt to show a little more of what Obi-Wan feels about the Force and Jedi training in particular, after having lived so long both in and outside of the Order. What the contemporary Jedi Order practices was not always what the Jedi Order practiced and it certainly wasn’t what Luke’s Order would have practiced, so Obi-Wan knows a lot better.

I don’t think Obi-Wan was necessarily a wreck of insecurity that some fics show, but I don’t think he was half as confident as he shows (in a lot of the EU stuff, at least, we see him doubting his ability to raise and train Anakin well, for example). He was abused and neglected during his childhood and that has an effect on someone.

On Melida-Daan, there were no Temple Jedis, and it was Obi-Wan who followed the Force to each citizen with even the slightest hint of potential.

He tried to teach everyone techniques to shield their minds and the most force sensitive he gave creche games as training until they were ready to do more.

So one thing I’m kind of going with here is that there’s a level of midochlorian count required to be a Jedi, but a lot of people still have more than just...nothing. And also that Melida/Daan, in the state it was in, probably wasn’t having people checked for Force sensitivity, anyway. With maybe a hint of “people can become more sensitive to the Force with proper training” thrown in there.

Cerasi and Nield joined them, even, sometimes, and while they had no Force Sensitivity of their own, Obi-Wan was training them to feel the edges of their unexpected bond, to utilize the Force through Obi-Wan's own abilities. After a few months, they could not affect the physical world, but Nield was starting to feel the truth or lies in people's words and Cerasi had feelings, sometimes, like the slightest hint of Obi-Wan's precognition.

For example lol

This goes back to the canon where Cerasi and Nield are shown to have an almost preternatural connection with Obi-Wan from the start and that since he isn’t blocking his own Force use this time around, that’s a strong bond between them. Open and free-flowing, I feel like that would allow them to utilize parts of Obi-Wan’s abilities that maybe he isn’t using/doesn’t have time to focus on.

He wasn't even surprised it was Qui-Gon Jinn, suspecting Yoda's hand in that.

Yoda is the literal worst in the JA books. I very much prescribe to the idea he kept other Masters from choosing Obi-Wan and that everything about Bandomeer was basically manufactured to force Qui-Gon to take him on.

More often than not, it was Jango, lounging nearby and Obi-Wan could swear he heard the Force screaming “danger” at Qui-Gon every time he got too close to Obi-Wan. Even with the buy’ce hiding his face, his glaring was obvious. 

Even without Galidraan being a total massacre, any traditional Mandalorian is going to despise the Jedi. Even moreso for the ones who are coming to care about Obi-Wan and know what Jinn did.

“No, it’s not. And if the Council had sent me to the ExplorCorps instead of the AgriCorps, I wouldn’t have even protested leaving.” Not entirely the truth, but not entirely a lie, either. “I have friends there, who I will hopefully be in contact with again someday, but my family is here.” 

So in both the Legends/EU stuff and the Disney/canon stuff, younger Obi-Wan actually loved flying. There’s a point in the Master & Apprentice book where he has a hugely traumatizing event involving it, which is what started his dislike, but before that he learned basically everything he could about every type of ship he could. It was one of many reasons his assignment to Bandomeer made no sense, since everything showed he would fit better in the Corps that actually had to do with flying.

“Obi-Wan--”

“Archon.” Obi-Wan held back a sigh at Qui-Gon’s incredulous stare. “We informed you, Master Jedi, of the titles of the Ruling Three of Melida-Daan. You are also free to address Archon Cerasi, Archon Nield, and I as ‘your grace,’ if that suits you more.”

As much as he didn’t want another title, when dealing with offworlders they needed such formalities. They’d dug it up out of old holos, like so many of the rare glimpses of Melida and Daan culture, and decided it suited them better than trying to work around “governor” for three people.

Trying to come up with a governmental system that wasn’t overused, didn’t depend on me making up a bunch of words, and didn’t have any negative connotations in the Star Wars universe was really hard haha I play a lot of fantasy games, so “Archon” really amuses me. And “Triarchy,” which is what the ruling body is referred to going forward, flows a lot better off the tongue than some of the other options.

Also I love the power play of Obi-Wan reminding Qui-Gon that they don’t have any sort of formal relationship anymore.

“This isn’t...you can’t honestly mean to stay here! It’s been months already!”

“When did you start to miss me, Master Jedi? I doubt it was when you first returned. Or for weeks after that. Was it when you could no longer dodge the questions of where I was? When others mourned my loss? When your grandmaster scolded you for failing his plans again?”

Qui-Gon didn’t know what to do with an Obi-Wan who was both assertive and informed, anymore than he ever had.

I love tearing Qui-Gon apart haha JA came out when I was a teenager and so I’ve always sort of despised him, and none of the earlier Disney/canon we get on him makes me like him anymore, at least in regards to his relationship with Obi-Wan.

In the JA books, other people have to continually push him to try to get him to think about Obi-Wan during the time period of the Melida/Daan stuff, like to the point Bant broke down in tears over it. And then Qui-Gon continued being a complete dick to Obi-Wan after he got back, which this Obi-Wan obviously would know.

He strode to the door with a confidence his teenage self couldn’t have felt. Through the Force he felt Qui-Gon move to follow him and Jango step between them, keeping him inside until Obi-Wan could make his escape.

Later, Jango would pat him on the head in passing, but not speak of it. Somehow, though, half a dozen of his people would be there at dinner to eat with Obi-Wan and keep him distracted with hilarious stories from their exploits.

I’ll never not love Jango/the Mandalorians protecting kids (and part of that is comforting kids).

ENL Writer’s Commentary: Chapter 2

They had been on the brink of destroying the spaceport, but now Obi-Wan had better ideas for that. Because while they’d done it, and survived, and it had won them the war--it seemed a waste. This time they didn’t blow it up, this time they stole it. A distraction off to one side, Obi-Wan shielding them from detection with the Force, and the very brief instructions of how to fly from Roenni and Obi-Wan just enough to get them off the ground and out to a field that the Scavenger Young controlled. 

The second Melida/Daan book starts out with the Young attacking a spaceport--the Elders had used what few ships they had to massacre the children and so that was a priority, plus the Middle Generation (the tiny amount of surviving people who were adults but not yet Elders) needed proof that the Young could win the war before giving over their support.

Roenni is a canon character, her father had been a starfighter mechanic. She’s younger than any of the other Young Obi-Wan had been fighting with at that point and he was very protective of her.

Their government was more structured, included representatives of the Middle Generation, and even created a (less powerful) set of positions for Elders to have some sort of representation. At the head was not one governor, though, but a triad--a Melida in Cerasi, a Daan in Nield, and Obi-Wan, who was neither (and both) to balance things out.

They did not argue in public, not even just in the council’s present. Obi-Wan had told them of how others had used their disagreements against them and they both chose a more extreme route of just making sure it never happened. He didn't know how long that would last, but they had a system for tabling votes until they'd privately discussed them, which was enough for the early days.

In the books, Nield became Governor and there was an advisory council made up of the Young. Cerasi and Obi-Wan both had positions within it. There were a lot of tensions between everyone, though, and it included public conflict between the three of them, which others used against them.

He did not let himself think of what was happening at the Temple. Nield carefully kept all Jedi news from him, knowing the unwanted distraction it would be. 

While Obi-Wan is on Melida/Daan, Qui-Gon is investing thefts at the Temple of seemingly random stuff. It’s revealed that they’re being done by Bruck Chun, an Initiate who had bullied Obi-Wan. At the very end of the second Melida/Daan book, the Temple had been attacked and there was an assassination attempt on Yoda. Basically it all traces back to Xanatos, Qui-Gon’s apprentice between Obi-Wan, who had left the Order under very bad circumstances and gave Qui-Gon a gigantic complex that made him think Obi-Wan was always seconds away from Falling.

“As long as the Halls of Evidence exist, there will be Melida and Daan learning to hate,” Nield argued with them in private. 

The Halls of Evidence are one of the main gimmicks in the Melida/Daan books--they’re elaborate tombs to the dead, where people have left holo recordings of themselves that almost all end up being pro-war propaganda. Nield hates them and goes about destroying as many as he can, which causes tensions because they’re both religious monuments and the resources and time could be spent on other things.

Melida/Daan officially requested a change of name in the Senate for the first time that wasn't an attempt to push just Melida or just Daan. Instead, it was Melida-Daan.

I’m not good at naming things lol

It was only as they spoke of getting rid of the Halls that he realized they had one potential export--the smooth black rock they used for those buildings was valued on many planets. From there they realized, to their great amusement, that many of the old weapons they’d collected and placed in a vault were considered antiques, a few going for shocking prices on intergalactic auction platforms. 

I have a whole post written up on the possible Melida/Daan (or Melida-Daan) economic state that I may someday get to lol Basically they had to somehow be funding their own wars, even with all the older equipment.

His second act was to contact planets he thought would offer help while also not demeaning the three of them and most of their cabinet for their ages--thirteen and fourteen was only considered “adult” in a handful of human societies. 

This was actually one of the first things I thought of when I was planning out the fic. Mandalore and Naboo, especially, are intricately woven into the beginnings of the Empire and changing them a few decades before hand  could have a big impact. Obi-Wan, who was good friends with Padme and obviously knew a lot about Mandalore, would have realized that.

"Adili suggested it," Cerasi came up to help the woman, Adili, manhandle him to a clear spot in the room. "She's been studying the older holos of our dead and what other pictures she can find, working on--"

"Traditional clothing for Melida-Daan. All these planets you talk to have...really amazing fashion. We can't just send you out there looking like," she didn't need to finish, just waved her hands at him and everyone knew what she meant.

Adili, aka Taun’s aunt, is an OC. We don’t see a lot about the Middle Generation, I think every single one I mention is an OC. Now that the war is over, she’s throwing herself into trying to recreate the happier parts of their cultures, or in her case, the historical fashion they used to have. My MA is in Peace Studies and I specifically focused on enduring conflict/post conflict societies so I’ve done a lot of research on the way that long wars destroy peoples and things like fashion either stop progressing entirely or regress to more conservative times.

It’s also one of the attempts I have to show that everyone is pretty casual. Like the Melida-Daan aren’t standing on ceremony for their rulers lol

ENL Writer’s Commentary: Chapter 5

  (Back to these, oops I’m so behind!)

Alderaan, always thinking of the efforts others had to put forth, did not ask for any representative to visit their planet and instead sent many of their own to Melida-Daan. Their humanitarian efforts were well-known, no one blinking an eye at a request for their assistance. Beyond that, Obi-Wan ached for a little more familiarity with his last life when so much had changed so quickly in this one.

Alderaan’s like the only decent rich/powerful Core world planet lbh lol Also I love Breha and Bail so this is a way to get ready for a future introduction of them.

He made a show of thinking it through, eyes narrowed at a crumbling wall across from him, barely supported by planks of wood and ingenuity. "What if we take people without outside power?"

"Like?"

Looking back over at the Alderaanian prince, Obi-Wan started to grin, the expression so much easier on his young face. "We're rebuilding a whole society, trying to rectify our own wrongs, but there's a whole galaxy out there of people in need. How do we let them know that Melida-Daan is open to them? That freed slaves can settle here and be welcomed citizens?"

Perhaps part of Obi-Wan's motivation was guilt, at not doing enough for Anakin, or the clones. But Cerasi and Nield had both loved the idea and he knew it was a good thing, no matter the reason.

This was another idea I had from the start that will be built upon as the story progresses, but the basics were what the scenes say, Melida-Daan would have a really small population, but also worry about settlers coming in and getting too much influence because they had powerful systems backing them.

More than that, Obi-Wan knows that the Senate and the Jedi won’t (can’t) deal with slavery and someone has to.

In this time, he himself wasn't too long free from his brush with slavery, the memories dredged up in his mind every time he saw the scars from collars around someone's neck. Many of them seemed to guess at it, as if he wore it like a shroud around himself, and he pushed away his shame. He knew they would not judge him for the short experience he had, he should not judge himself. 

Sooo much happens in the JA books in the space of something like two years and it’s wild to think there’s only a tiny bit of time between his being enslaved on Bandomeer (book one) and his being left on a wartorn planet (books five and six). And, too, I wanted to show how “melding” with his younger self as Obi-Wan did wasn’t just old!Obi-Wan overpowering everything.

Even being a slave for such a short amount of time, especially on a kid, would leave a lot of trauma, and people who have gone through slavery themselves would see it. That would give Obi-Wan some credibility he really wouldn’t want to leverage in any version of the timeline, but it’s there.

ENL Writer’s Commentary: Chapter 1

I was trying to think of the best way to make extra notes about details that might be lost or missed in Everybody Needs Luck and after starting to write a few different ways, decided that a commentary type approach might be best. I’ll copy some text from ENL and then give explanations on it and/or the canon behind it and/or my changes to the canon. This is experimental, so I may change format if I get a few chapters in and decide I don’t like it lol

You can skip the passages from the fic (in the block quotes) and still get the information, the quotes are more as a reference than anything.

The dead did not simply wake up--even when he had first taken the form of a force ghost he hadn't experienced a feeling such as this.

The fic takes place post-Force ghost Obi-Wan. I’m pretty vague about exactly when, though I reference Rey, mostly because Rise of Skywalker is trash and I don’t want it to be part of the fic but don’t necessarily want to be responsible with coming up with what else happened! Suffice to say, it’s not super important, because within a few days of Obi-Wan being back in time the timeline has changed to such an extent that the butterfly effect of time travel will have destroyed something so far off.

His heart stuttered and he wasn't sure he still had the control of his expressions to keep the power of his joy off of his face. He had somehow not registered before that moment that of course Cerasi would be alive (that she could stay that way, this time). And just the sight of her brought up the old (now current, he was finding) feeling of connection, of a bond connecting the two of them, and Nield as well.

A notable detail of the two books set in Melida/Daan was that Obi-Wan felt cut off from the Force. It was implied it was from the emotional distress of it all (he was just a thirteen year old boy), though to him he felt like it was part of his failings as a Jedi. Obviously adult Obi-Wan would not have any problems with that and would be able to interrogate the fact he, Nield, and Cerasi did seem to share a connection from the beginning. 

That made cutting off his padawan braid all the harder--for while the adult in Obi-Wan knew it did not matter, that decades from now there might be a whole order of Jedi that practiced nothing like the Master-Padawan relationship of the day, he was still connected to it in this time. He'd been terrified of not being a Jedi and then, just when he began to accept that it was not his fate, he'd been thrown into working with Qui-Gon as a team.

Oddly enough, in the books, we see Obi-Wan hand over his lightsaber to Qui-Gon, but we don’t see him cut off his Padawan braid. It felt like a meaningful scene to put here.

Because of Yoda, he now knew. Because Yoda had kept the Masters who might want him from him, hoping he'd heal Qui-Gon, ignoring what that meant for Obi-Wan. How could he have been a good Master to Anakin, when all he knew was desperation and a feeling of never being good enough?

In the Jedi Apprentice books, Yoda basically manipulated Qui-Gon into taking Obi-Wan as his apprentice and to do such he put Obi-Wan into a hugely dangerous situation and treated him like shit.

ENL Writer’s Commentary: Chapter 4

The second major government to accept their overtures was more of a stretch--Obi-Wan knew that the Great Clan Wars were about to erupt in Mandalore space, a powder keg waiting for any shift in power, but he also knew they were the best chance at improving Melida-Daan's security.

So Mandalore’s backstory (from Legends with some tweaks) is that there was what was called the Battle of Galidraan, where the local government in league with Death Watch (think like Mandalorian Taliban) tricked the Republic into sending a large group of Jedi to slaughter the True Mandalorians they’d hired for a job (these were somewhat moderate traditionalist Mandalorians).

Jango, who was considered by the traditionalists who weren’t Death Watch to be the rightful ruler of Mandalore, was the only one of them to survive and was sold into slavery. Without him around, there was a huge power vacuum that led to the Great Clan Wars, which were what Obi-Wan’s mission to Mandalore where he originally met Satine were related to.

One of the first things I thought of when starting this fic was how much happened in 44 BBY (the first year of the Jedi Apprentice books) and how much of it we didn’t know an exact timeline for. Even a lot of them don’t give context clues because the writers themselves are probably vague on the timeline. So, arguably, Obi-Wan could prevent Galidraan and that’s one of the reasons he contracted the True Mandalorians lol

"They have a rite of passage at thirteen, anyone who passes it is considered an adult." 

This is Legends stuff, as well. Personally I feel like it’s “adult” as in considered capable of making reasonable decisions, but not necessarily getting to do literally everything an adult would, kinda like how here in the States we let people drive from 15-17 (depending on the state) or we let people vote/join the military at 18 but still won’t let them drink until 21.

He remembered when she'd forsaken weapons in the last life, refusing to ever pick one up again. Satine had reminded him so much of her, just a few years later, and now that he was back he found himself wondering if that was where his initial feelings had been rooted. It had only made Satine's death all the worse.

Honestly I’ve always thought Satine was like someone had read Jedi Apprentice, knew they couldn’t make any of it canon, but wanted Obi-Wan in love with a pacifist again lol

They didn’t have to fear the Mandalorians not taking them seriously, what they did have to fear was them trying to adopt them. Adorable little warrior orphans seemed to be their weakness. It was flattering, and some of the youngest among them were probably going to accept, but most of the Young had fought too hard to start building what Melida-Daan would be to give it up for another culture.

Even before The Mandalorian became a thing, pretty much all canon about Mandalorians had them very into adopting kids. Jango himself was adopted, Kal Skirata (one of the trainers for the clones that we actually get a decent amount of info on) was both adopted by a Mandalorian and also adopted a bunch of the clones, etc.

“They say you were a jetii.”

Even without the massacre of the True Mandalorians, Mandalorians historically disliked the Jedi. This whole exchange was more for Jango than for Obi-Wan, to show him what sort of person Obi-Wan was (the sort who would give up everything he’d ever known to save others and not regret it)

As a thirty-five year old, he had acknowledged that Jango Fett was an attractive man (half of that was the danger around him, the knowledge that this was a Jedi-Killer who he couldn't even resent for that fact). As a fourteen year old, he was doing all he could not to blush in his presence.

Which was...mortifying, but had done more to get the Mandalorians to accept an ex-Jedi than all of his words. When the others had found out who--what--he was, there'd been a tension that had at first surprised Obi-Wan, until he remembered that even without Galidraan, they had a long history to give them reasons to dislike Force users.

This was both a bit of a subtle time jump and also a way to talk again about the disparity between who Obi-Wan the Force Ghost was and who Obi-Wan the abandoned Padawan was and who Obi-Wan the co-ruler of Melida-Daan now is.

Also it’s pretty adorable to think of this 14 year old murder child having a crush on Jango Fett, from the POV of the Mandalorians.

“It’s not the weapons that cause the wars,” Cerasi mused, after coming back from a day of training.

In this universe, Cerasi knows she was murdered. And she knows that Melida/Daan almost fell back into war. And she knows a lot of the horrible stuff that happened afterwards, like the Clone Wars. She needed some time to come to terms with the fact pacifism wouldn’t work for her, though. Possibly foreshadowing for someone else? lol

ENL Writer’s Commentary: Chapter 3

He might not have visited Naboo until a decade later, but he could see very little would change in that time. After landing in a diplomatic hanger he was brought before Queen Ekay, a monarch he knew only from vague stories Padme had once told.

She was older than Padme had been, at eighteen she was one of the older monarchs of recent years, though already starting on her second term. Her age didn't stop her, or any of the Naboo, from treating Obi-Wan and his people like fully realized individuals.

We have books from Padme’s POV and obviously The Phantom Menace was very much about Naboo, but we know only vague things about most of the monarchs before Padme. Queen Ekay (the only name we have for her) would have ruled a little before this time (taking our Veruna’s ridiculously long rule) but that’s about all we know, so I bullshitted her age and term as Queen (as I will do with a lot of the future Naboo monarchs). I thought having her be an established Queen would make it easier for her to help out Melida-Daan and, also, having her be a little older but still treating them with respect would comfort the Young.

Nena, an expert at eavesdropping, found the reactions to him hilarious. “They’re all caught up in romantic ideals, they think you’re some sort of hero from their old stories,” she huffed at him in the mornings, when they all took breakfast in the suite he’d been given. “The never-tiring boy who sacrificed everything and more for a cause.” 

Nena is a canon character, she was one of the leaders of the Young. She was somewhat at odds with Nield in the books because she wanted to focus on rebuilding infrastructure while he wanted to focus on tearing down reminders of the past. She seemed like a good choice for this sort of role, considering they’re going to Naboo for aid.

“That’s a good thing,” Kima stated, from where she was trying to get Joli’s clothing in order. “I saw it enough during the wars, making people larger than life has value.” She was old enough to have fought in the few wars, to have lost a daughter to a bombing and just...given up until the Young won and gave her something like hope. “But you’ll also have to be careful, Obi-Wan, you can lose their regard quicker than you gain it.” 

Kima, meanwhile, is an OC (almost all the older Melida-Daan character are, I forget if I mentioned that already, but we weren’t given a lot to work with). Obi-Wan understands the value of ages and perceived ages (he was the dude who grew a magnificent beard to hide his own baby face after all lol) and having Middle Generation members in the government makes things easier.

While he, and his companions, would prefer to spend everyday and all day on their planning, the Naboo insisted on breaks. They toured the countryside, spent an afternoon at a beautiful lakeside beach, and frequented the streets of Theed. Other children, especially those in the Legislative Youth Program, were encouraged to interact with them.

One of them was even a Naberrie, a cousin to baby Padme. Obi-Wan spent more time than he should have in his presence, creating a connection that would hopefully include messages over the next few years so that he could keep track of the future Queen. The others, taking his lead once he mentioned how much they could learn, went out of their ways to try to befriend the children.

The Legislative Youth Program is one of the ways that children are trained for political positions. Padme went through it, too. The cousin is just a random OC, in most fics Padme is given a decent sized family and them being at least adjacent to politics is common, too.

One thing I’m trying to accomplish is to never have just one connection or change (or hint of a connection/change) made in a chapter. Sometimes it’s more obvious than others and I’m not sure I always do a good job at it. But here I wanted to make it very obvious that they’d be influencing future Naboo politics and in particular Obi-Wan would be taking an interest in Padme (as she was not just Luke and Leia’s mother and kind of Obi-Wan’s sister-in-law, but also a dear friend of his).

“Ambassador,” Ekay laid her hand on his shoulder, looking down at him, but never looking down at any of them. “You ask so little of those of us that have so much. What we will give may be charity, but that does not make you a beggar. Push for more and I will see it granted.”

At this point I was still trying to decide what titles to give the rulers of Melida-Daan, so “Ambassador” worked out for this as a stand-in since that’s the role Obi-Wan was filling.

Ekay would be very politically minded and, even more to the point, know how to deal with stubborn, politically minded children, so she would know how to word things to make it easier on those around her.
