Connecting with Nurse Informaticians Across Canada: Katie Ho, RN, MSN

How and why did you become interested in nursing informatics?

I was first exposed to using an electronic health record when I was working as a new graduate in Toronto. Shortly after beginning my new role, I decided to moved back to British Columbia (BC) and started working at Vancouver General Hospital in 2008. I enjoyed my role as a frontline nurse however, I was frustrated with how documentation was completed at the time. The contrast in experiences between Ontario and BC grew into an interest in nursing informatics.

In 2010, I entered the MSN program at University of British Columbia and under the supervision of Dr. Leanne Currie I specialized in nursing informatics. Through my studies, I had opportunities to work on several clinical information system projects including PARIS as well as a pilot study on the use of handheld devices in a clinical setting.  My graduate studies really sparked my interested in nursing informatics, and I was lucky to find a position as a clinical analyst in one of Canada’s largest EHR implementations, the Clinical System Transformation(CST) Project.  In that role my nursing informatics background was useful in helping me understand how clinical workflows would be transformed through the use of electronic clinical documentation.  My nursing informatics knowledge was also instrumental in allowing me to facilitate design sessions with clinicians and subject matter experts. I really enjoyed being able to help them make informed choices and understand the impacts of how and why design decisions needed to be made. In this role I worked with some excellent clinicians who were focused on delivering better, and more patient focused care however. I feel as a nurse informaticist by background I was able to help bring that important nursing voice into conversations about electronic documentation.

Describe what your current role involves?

Last year I applied for a job as a Clinical Architect on the CST project. As a clinical architect I used the skills learned as a clinical analyst as well as my clinical and informatics knowledge to help transform different areas of the practice, through the use of a fully electronic electronic health record (EHR). In this role it has been important to learn to communicate and collaborate with team members of all roles and across multiple health organizations. It has been interesting to find enterprise wide solutions as well as facilitating more complex decision-making through our governance process.  As our project involves 3 separate organizations, each with their own culture it’s been a challenge to standardize workflow, and content across the EHR as current systems across the organizations has been so varied. Although challenging, I do find it rewarding to help streamline and optimize the user experience through both system design, and identifying where changes need to occur in organizational culture.

Which areas of nursing informatics do you find most interesting?

Currently, I enjoy the integration between the clinical and technical space very much. Understanding the work that clinicians do and the challenges that they face day-to-day is important when finding solutions to the limitations or improvements of the system. We have to find the fine balance between system configuration and needs, as well as the needs of the users of the system. The process of design and implementation of an EHR ultimately challenges status quo however, the changes that this brings about can be daunting but surprisingly invigorating.

What advice do you have for others who are interested in nursing informatics?

If anyone has a genuine interest in a career in nursing informatics, I would advise them to pursue an education in nursing informatics or health informatics. The exposure and theoretical knowledge the education gives you is invaluable and really helps you prepare for a role in nursing informatics. I would also encourage those interested in nursing informatics to seek opportunities to expand your knowledge by talking with people in the industry to gain their perspective as well as volunteer for quality improvement initiatives that look at the way data is captured or reused
