So huh about episode 345

WHAT

So many things happened (I mean it was a special ep of 2h30) but damn, like all along I was like "Where is this even going" and then Heiji was revealed and I lost my shit

Vermouth is really interesting, I was completely mind-blown by her disguise as the serial killer and that being the reason as to why she didn't want to kill Ran or Shinichi. I also legit thought her and Jodie were one and the same but nope ! I almost want to go back and re-watch the other episodes, but I still have 712 left sooooo

Akai is so fucking cool too, he shot Vermouth no second thoughts like damn, that's cold (even if she had a bulletproof vest, he still is probably the most brutal character so far). Seems like he knows Haibara and she knows him ? That will probably be expended on later

One thing I really like about this ep is also the friendship between Haibara and Shinichi (and by extension Heiji) as well as Ran and Haibara. That "big sister" moment is genuinely so sweet it made me tear up

Still we learned a lot with this, especially the whole thing with Vermouth not aging. Haibara did said that they were trying to create smtg to "raise the dead" or something to this effect. Did they succeed then ? Or is Vermouth just a test ? There was also the reveal of a "Big boss" too, but there isn't much to take away from that, beside the fact that they monitered Vermouth (I guess Gin contacted them) and considered she went too far. Probably because of the whole "I blew up a car and the japanese police got involved"

tldr ; I falled in love with this show (it's already been the case for a few hundreds of eps but let's pretend as if it just happened)

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 345

And to 'celebrate' for Smiffina - it's a big one!

Gina arrives on scene at a shout to find Reg trying to gently reason with a spade-wielding elderly man who has dementia and is very confused as to why 'new' people are in his house, fearing they've taken his wife hostage and are hurting her.

Gina asks June to keep the little quiet drink to herself (too bad she didn't tell Yvonne that after she was just gassing to Honey and Amber about it) June has to tell her the superintendent already knows.

Amanda drags Gina up to her office for a dressing down later, telling her it was wholy inappropriate. Gina explains it was one small drink, 5 minutes to the end of the shift and a morale boost. Gina promises it will never happen again, "Really?" Amanda muses. "Really. It's never happened in the past and it won't happen in the future." Amanda crosses the line and pulls out the bottle of whiskey she found in Gina's desk (but doesn't look in Jack, Neil's or some of the others....even Adam had one in his!) Gina is horrified that Amanda has gone through her office and tells her it was given to her by a colleague quite some time ago and only consumed after work on particularly hard days. Gina walks out with Amanda adding. "Please don't give me another reason to be disappointed in you."

"I will try not to ma'am."

Gina heads straight outside and takes a cigarette from one of the CID extras, Smithy watching her from inside. He teases her about drinking and now smoking on duty and offers to buy her a coffee. Gina decides to take an early refs and go for a walk instead to try and calm down. Leela calls over to him to ask if Gina is okay as the entire station knows about the drink the night before and Smithy snaps at them to get back to work instead of gossiping.

Yvonne calls for Gina and she doesn't answer so has to call Smithy instead. Gina is in a pub and orders a malt whiskey - before she has to quickly change it to a black coffee, sighing to herself.

Smithy has to speak to Amanda because of the call from Yvonne, the elderly man with dementia has gone missing in an adgitated state with an old gun from the war, Smithy has SO19 on standby just incase but Amanda authorises their immediate attendance without speaking to Gina, Dan or Reg who have already dealt with him that day. Smithy stresses that they need to speak to the other officers about it - but Amanda insists she's given a direct order as the commanding officer and will not back down.

Sun Hill obtain access to the house next door to the one that the old man was at that morning but can't hear anything. SO19 arrive and are on standby to enter. Somehow the press are aware and have turned up. "Well for once we're going to look pretty good on the front page of their papers. Standby for my word, Sgt." Hmm. Wonder who called them...!

Gina returns to the station and finds 6 missed calls from Smithy. She listens to her messages and then rushes to the scene. Smithy clearly is not happy as he watches SO19 surround the house and thinks it's OTT but has to do as Amanda has deigned. Without any discussion with the SO19 officers Amanda orders they go in.... and of course it's the wrong house. They would have known it was the wrong place if they'd spoken to Dan, Reg or Gina.

Oscar for this elderly lady though.

At the correct address, Gina finds him sat outside in the garden with the gun, she gets the householders out and then gently approaches to talk to him. He tells her he doesn't know how he got to the house because he doesn't remember coming and he knows he's losing it and is worried.

"You don't know what it's like to really be on your own." He tells her.

"Don't I?" Gina asks gently. "I work with about 200 people... there's not one of them I'd talk to properly. ... well... maybe one."

She talks him down and - instead of a huge busting into a room with SO19 and shoot off like Amanda could have caused....it ends in a hug.

Amanda has caused a huge scrum of press at the front of the station and - eventually - makes her way out to deal with them, after telling Smithy that she doesn't know what his problem is but he better sort it out, the sooner the better!

Smithy makes contact with Louise again and arranges to go and see her and they make up - right as Zain gets deeper into nailing Pete as an old associate of his has gone solo - and right as Zain thinks he's caught him... the associate ends up in his car with a bullet in his head.

Unfortunately for Smithy, things are a bit tight too... he and Louise are in bed together... as Pete returns home. They dress in record time and Smithy tells her to stay calm and follow his lead. The fake a situation where she thought someone was in the house and he was investigating it. Later he hears that Louise and Pete are going on an extended holiday and he promises to be waiting when she returns.

Gina explains to Amanda that she was on her refs which was why she was uncontactable but she could still have asked Reg or Dan and if she had, the mess could have been avoided. The report from SO19 of the second situation says that Gina handled the situation very well and she has to congratulate her - which sticks in Amanda's throat. Gina suggests they draw a line under the past few days and start all over again - and Amanda agrees.

Smithy is amused when he returns to the station to hear that Amanda has a meeting with the borough commander. "Be on standby with a mop and bucket. [for the blood and guts]." Gina smirks.

Gina has to go upstairs to speak to the Borough Commander. Smithy grins. "Off for your pat on the back?" Gina calls back to him as she walks. "You'll have to pay to talk to me soon!"

Upstairs unfortunately it's a different matter. Ian is not happy. He has been spun a line by Amanda who has made Gina the scapegoat of the entire situation. She also told him about the bottle of whiskey she found in her office and the drink at the pub after the bet AND the Barton St overstepping when the relief were out together.

Gina is suspended with immediate affect, pending an inquiry.

Mo Guan Shan’s Big Feelings

Mo Guan Shan, resident tsundere of 19 Days, pretends to be tough and hard-hearted.  But he’s easily and frequently reduced to tears, as we soon realize.  In fact, he cries so often in the story that this post is pretty massive.

MGS cries as a child, of course.  He’s in a clinic in his mom’s arms when She Li first becomes obsessed with him (ch 294).

MGS has a bad dream about the day his dad told little Guan Shan he couldn’t come to the school’s robot fair (ch 392).

MGS cries in other dreams too.  Soon after meeting He Tian, he has a sensual dream of being comforted in He Tian’s arms after being bullied.  Look closely – there are little tears falling as He Tian assures him he’s the “most invincible badass.” (ch 250)

True to form, he cries in the Santa fantasy extra when his house is destroyed (ch 345).

MGS cries when he’s frustrated, like in this episode after the play when he can’t untie himself to pee (ch 359).

MGS is a weepy drunk as well.  After accidentally destroying Brother Qiu’s bike (ch 427), he drunkenly sobs in bed as he vows to somehow repay him. 

Later, while MGS is still drunk, He Tian slips and falls while carrying him, ripping Mo’s pants in front of He Cheng (ch 429).  MGS cries from embarrassment.

Unsurprisingly, MGS cries over his dad.  After He Tian unknowingly brings him to dinner at what is probably his father’s former restaurant, we see a young MGS in flashback crying in fear at the chaos around him.  Present-day MGS flees and He Tian finds him crying in the parking lot (ch 217)

One of the more moving chapters shows MGS breaking down as he visits his father in prison for the first time (ch 240).

MGS cries from sheer anger in several chapters.  The earliest is when He Tian forces an unwanted kiss on him as a misplayed joke (ch 174-175).  He Tian is taken aback by Mo’s strong, tearful reaction.  It’s probably the first time someone doesn’t try to placate He Tian when he’s being a jerk, and he begins to take MGS more seriously after this.

MGS tries to end his friendship with He Tian after the school play that indirectly causes him to lose his meager job.  He Tian doesn’t help matters by waving money at him as they quarrel.  MGS weeps with anger and says, “Standing with you makes me feel like a failure.”  (ch 364)

He cries in anger once more as he watches incredulously as She Li incinerates his backpack (ch 368).  (She Li seems to walk around carrying gasoline like it’s no big deal – what’s up with that?)

MGS cries when he’s worried.  When he digs frantically through the mudslide during their ill-fated mountain hike, he thinks He Tian has been buried alive.  When He Tian calls out, MGS throws his teary self into He Tian’s arms (ch 329).

MGS’s worry is clear when the last violent fight with She Li is finally over and He Tian has won (ch 408).  The battle was so fierce that by the end He Tian is crying too, and soon they’re embracing (I sense a pattern here!)

MGS often cries when his emotions overwhelm him.  Early on, after MGS is rescued from the fiasco of agreeing to take the blame for a serious crime, He Tian tells him, “Don’t try to shoulder everything yourself.” (ch 188).  MGS tears up at the thought that someone like He Tian has his back.

MGS ends up full-on sobbing in He Tian’s arms (again) when he finally admits why She Li has a hold over him: because of the homeless man who tried to kill him (ch 319).

In one of the most traumatic scenes (and a personal favorite), both guys shed a lot of tears when He Tian finds him after She Li has tortured and burned him (ch 369-370).  These chapters mark a turning point in their relationship from friends to more.

MGS is shown when he’s happy only once, and that memorable event will happen in their future: that Christmas night when He Tian returns and proposes with matching rings (ch 412).  Cue the waterworks!

Thinking about how Blyke is actually insanely strong, even by the standards of his world, yet he gets his ass kicked for the entire story.

From episode one...

To the first actual fight he’s ever been in... (ch. 15) [Edit: second actual fight]

... to the approximate middle of the story... (ch. 197)

... Up through the very latest chapter as of me writing this— (ch. 345)

— Blyke repeatedly gets pummeled.

Over,

and over,

and over,

and over.

It’s really no wonder he gets insecure about it.

I mean, these screenshots were all taken from different fights. The amount of fights he’s won, on screen, without backup is... once or twice against Zeke, once against Gou (Agwin’s Jack from turf wars), and once as a vigilante solo act. That’s four, max. There could be more that I’ve forgotten, but I’ve read this series so many times and I really can’t think of any. (No, I don’t count firing a warning shots to get people to behave as “winning a fight”.)

compared to all the fights he’s been outmatched in? You’ve got Rein from turf wars, Volcan, John, John, John, Lennon from his vigilante solo stunt, John again, the fight in the Rowden amusement park, the attack on Rowden hill, Ember, and now the authorities in general. Possibly more that I forgot. That’s 11. He didn’t necessarily lose all those fights, but they’re fights where he was way out of his depth and/or would’ve lost without backup.

Anyway, point is: Blyke is no stranger to getting his ass kicked. In particular, he is no stranger to getting kicked while he’s already down.

In fact, I’m gonna take an example from the turf wars match in chapter 15: Blyke has already lost the fight with Rein, yet Arlo hangs him out to dry. Arlo is the one who’s supposed to call him back to get healed, yet he just smiles while the others look at him expectantly, and Blyke gets more and more injured. Even Rein is questioning it.

I could and honestly probably will do a whole analysis on just chapter 15, but eventually Seraphina calls him back for healing. The way Blyke was treated in that scene was kinda heartbreaking.

GOD chapter 15 is my favorite episode but it leaves me with so many questions grrr I wanna talk about it but that’s another entry.

Putting that aside, Blyke is very protective, and compassionate to the plight of others when he’s aware of it. After he sees the situation in Branish, he is immediately, rightfully pissed about the way society is. It opens his eyes to a world he hasn’t experienced, and it reframes how he thinks of John (still a “cripple” at the time).

To the actual point of this diary entry (other than rambling about Blyke, that is), John is another character who gets repeatedly kicked while he’s down. I don’t think I need screenshots to prove that. However, in my current reread of the series, I recently came across a certain panel that I do wish I had a screenshot of. It’s either Blyke or Seraphina who asks John “Why are you always kicking people while they’re down?” And John responds: “Because everyone kicked me when I was down!” And I think that’s a vivid contrast with Blyke, who has been kicked while he’s down, and chooses to protect people who are weaker than him. In particular, I want to point out that in order to protect them, Blyke is willing and actively chooses to get beaten quite brutally.

Mind you, this ^ is to protect people who he barely knows. He and Sera aren’t close, and the others are practically strangers.

It’s pretty much the inverse reaction. John says “Others kicked me while I was down, so I’ll do the same on everyone else tenfold.” Blyke says “I was kicked while I was down, and goddammit I will keep getting kicked if it means other people don’t have to.”

It’s such a cool parallel, and the fact that when John was getting kicked, Blyke was trying to help, but when Blyke was getting kicked, John was doing the kicking adds so many layers to it.

To have failed in killing Shinichi Kudo . . . he's made a huge oversight.

My video for SLICE (Short Little Iron Chef Edits), at BentoVid! The goal was to create at least a 90-second AMV within 100 hours, using a song from a list of songs only revealed at the start of the challenge. Given my slow editing, I can't believe I did it, but I did!

i remember oomf telling me about the love hearts text message so i was excited to have finally seen it for myself!!!!!
