don’t you think lance getting so much of the spotlight in the first 3 episodes was misleading and a little unfair? like, they made people think he was the MC for no reason

Sorry but I’ve just never seen it that way at all personally! I didn’t feel he was the protagonist honestly–and I think that’s clear right from the second episode. A number of reasons for this. Some Assembly Required completely cements this, particualry through the following:

In this episode, Lance doesn’t demonstrate a level of inherent skill that stands out clearly above the rest of the team. Shiro is the only thing who exhibits this; that scene where he seamlessly “sees through the Lion’s eyes” is a Protagonist Moment if I ever saw it lmao,, 

He doesn’t have a noticeablely serious moment where he completely shuts down, closes off, has a panic attack, ect. We see him clash with Keith more, but the tone of that conflict is completely different from Shiro’s panic attack and Pidge throwing down her headset in the mind meld excercise. Both of those instances are indicateve of more deeply rooted trauma, whereas Lance instigating Keith is played for comedic effect. Again, here, we see Shiro–and Pidge–painted in more of a Main Characer light. 

We go right into Shiro and Pidge’s character arcs for the next set of episodes. The early episodes are very much their arcs–which, of course, also interrealte through their shared history with Kerberos. 

We actually get a lot of info on these characters in episode 2, right down to how they prepare for a supposed alarm. Again, Lance had got the comedy scene here. He’s playing up the lighthearted everyman role right from the start. We actually get a lot of info on these characters just 2 episodes in, and already, it’s clear Lance is not a solo lead–as much as he may seem to think he is at first, lmao. 

Not for anything, but Lance actually doesn’t get a whole lot of development in season 1, certainly not anything that would make me believe he’s meant to be the “Main Character”?? Like, he’s even taken out of comission for like two episodes?? And then, as soon as he’s conscious, that very same episode he’s tricked into getting his Lion stolen so?? It’s also important to remember that, early on, Lance has very little stake in this game. Right now, his family hasn’t been directly hurt by the Galra like Pidge’s. He hasn’t lost a loved one for a year and battled depression over it like Keith. He hasn’t been tortured and irrevocably changed like Shiro. His whole planet wasn’t destroyed like Allura and Coran. His parents aren’t dead.

He does cry because he misses home, which is certainly an understandable reaction that hints at more depth. But relatively speaking, he’s one of the happiest and most well adjusted individiuals. Early on, he chooses to focus on a lot of these very trivial concerns; ie, popularity, girls, his one-sided rivalry with Keith, whether there’s going to be a parade in his honor, ect. I dunno, I guess I just always saw him as a member of an esemble cast, the lighthearted everyman who needed to mature and grow. That was the vibe I got from him early on. 

People might get a little hung up on the pilot cause it’s such a long period of time and Lance seems to be the catalyst, but again, it’s clear he’s the one the audenience is meant to identify wih most rather than someone who is tied to the main source of intrigue. Right from the beginning, that’s Shiro. And I’d argue that, from the very start, there was also a similar aura of mystery completely surrounding Keith that basically cemented his role as a Big Player in the plot. He’s kicked out of the Garrison, but it’s never explained why. He’s got that wrapped up knife?? He’s got a mysterious past with Shiro?? He’s “like a Galra” and takes on Zarkon one-on-one?? Season 1 makes it clear Keith’s gonna have huge development later down the line, he just exudes that aura of someone who’s got a tragic past and is fated to go through hell–he’s written pretty similar to Shiro in that respect.

That’s not saying Lance isn’t also an important character, but I don’t think eveyone needs to have a deep dark past rooted in the enemy’s latest machinations and have their character arcs directly lead the plot, it’s cool to have outside motivations and development. And hey, not everyone’s character conflicts are always going to be life or death. Again, Lance is the everyman, his role is different from Shiro’s, Keith’s, ect. And he does get to stand center stage in later seasons. He recieves tons of development and it’s pretty amazingly executed. But I just can’t buy this whole “Lance was supposed to lead/take the Black Lion/be the Main Character/I was led on” thing. I just can’t see it at all.

I hope this is not NSFW but dudeee my belly button looks so WEIRD

This week:

- pain has gone down! had some fun bouts of tailbone pain especially when i sit down

- i started doing very easy workouts or yoga every morning for about 10-15 mins and this feels good

- constipation is magically fixed?!

- baby is doing what i call “combo movements” - like i’ll feel kicks/punches at several different places at once. my whole abdomen rocks and it’s kind of a crazy feeling. 

- we have a crib and a dresser omg. and a recliner. and we’ve pre-ordered our stroller which will come in July!

- headaches, but they’re manageable

- very tired/bloated/swollen/hot/uncomfortable/feet hurt. it’s hard to say how much is from being pregnant and how much is from the heat (yup, we’re in the 90s).

- bladder is getting...squished. i pee, and then i need to pee.

- still worrying occasionally about movement but it isn’t as intense. she moves a lot, and she rests a lot. getting more used to it.

- i had beer yesterday (like quite a lot of a can) oops. i felt the slightest beginnings of a buzz and it felt so good sigh. can't wait to drink again

i love my baby girl! i’ve made up a few songs that i sing to her on the reg.

birth/parenting prep

currently trying to research the minefield that is sleep training theories, opinions, and controversies. the more i think about parenting, the more i think flexibility is going to have to be my #1 ruling attitude. 

we’re traveling a bunch in June and then hunkering down to prep for baby’s arrival - physically, logistically, and emotionally. so:

choose pediatrician - kind of done, need to do paperwork

order insurance breast pump - june

hypnobabies (gonna buy USB drive off ebay lol) - start in july

birth classes - mid-july thru mid august

prepping for labor with doula - starting late july

eating dates regularly - mid august

and then more fuzzy/vague timeline stuff:

life insurance/will/legal stuff

figure out cloth diapering system!!! we love Esembly baby but are still learning

decorating baby’s corner / figuring out how to configure our room

i’m sure there’s a lot more, heh, but that’s all i can think of for now
