Bears’ Men Take Aim At NCAA Championships
Cal’s Nine Qualifiers Set For Season Finale
BERKELEY – The 2024 collegiate season will conclude this week for California track & field, with the Golden Bears sending nine male qualifiers across five events to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. All of Cal's field event finals, as well as the track event semifinals, will take place on Wednesday; those who qualify for the track finals will race again on Friday evening.   This year's group of qualifiers is tied with the 2014 and 1941 groups for the largest in men's program history. Cal has not had a men's outdoor champion since 2011, when Mike Morrison won the decathlon contest with a school-record 8118 points; its last team title was in 1922, the Bears' first appearance at the championships.   Wednesday's field event action kicks off with the men's hammer throw at 2 p.m., featuring multiple Cal athletes for the first time in program history. Ivar Moisander, who posted a career-best of 69.38m (227-7) last month at the Pac-12 Championships, is competing in his third straight NCAA Outdoor Championships and hopes to add a second All-America honor to close out his collegiate career. Rowan Hamilton posted the NCAA's best mark of the season at the Mt. SAC Relays (77.16m/253-2) - the No. 8 performance in collegiate history -  earned meet records at both the Brutus Hamilton Invitational and the Big Meet, and went undefeated all the way through the Pac-12 Championships. Should either claim the NCAA title, it would be the first by a Cal men's hammer thrower since Jack Merchant, who was also Cal's last shot put champion, in 1922.   Both of Cal's other Pac-12 champions also qualified for their second straight NCAA Outdoor Championships. Shot putter Jeff Duensing earned First-Team All-American status in 2023 with a career-best mark 19.98m (65-6.75) and captured his first career Pac-12 title in May after throwing 19.83m (65-0.75). The Bears' field event group is rounded out by repeat pole vault conference champion Skyler Magula, who tied for the top qualifying result at the NCAA West Preliminary (5.42m/17-9.25) and has a season-best mark of 5.52m (18-1.25), just below his personal record of 5.55m (18-2.5) from 2023. Cal has only had three outdoor pole vault champions in the program's history, with Lawrence Anderson's share of the 1954 title being the most recent.
The Bears will also make appearances in two track events, with each competitor making their NCAA Outdoor Championships debut and hoping to claim the program's first title in either race. The 4x100m relay squad, consisting of Chase Williams, George Monroe, Mason Mangum and David Foster (with Christian Trapps as an alternate) blazed to a time of 39.28 – second fastest in program history – at the NCAA West Preliminary to become Cal's first 4x100m relay team to qualify since 1977, adding another highlight to a standout season that included a Big Meet record in the event. Foster, a 2024 Indoor Second-Team All-American, also qualified in the 100m with a wind-aided time of 9.91 at the West Preliminary, becoming the first Bear in history to join the sub-10-second club and becoming the first male sprinter to advance for the Blue & Gold in the event since Willie White in 1960.   All competitions will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks, with Wednesday's and Friday's track events scheduled on ESPN2 and the field events on ESPN+.

hambbyong here. why the FUCK does goalie gear look like that what the hell do they just get actual pillows strapped to their legs
HAHAHAHA omg
tbh like...kinda? it's a pretty dangerous position so they gotta be well protected! Here's a breakdown of what the armor looks like under the jerseys (the diagram or whatever is for young players but it's still all the same):
Tumblr media
so yeah goalies end up looking a little silly because they're so padded up. but the pads, glove, and blocker are pretty heavy so goalies are actually super strong. plus they need to make crazy athletic movements (like doing the splits and stuff), and they're on the ice for the full 60 minutes unlike the rest of the team, so they're truly built different lol
something you (and any other artists) might find extra cool about goalies is that their helmets actually get custom art made for them, individualized for each goaltender. some of the designs are really amazing.
for example, here's a goalie mask design i really liked from the washington capitals' back up goalie (phoenix copley) a few years ago:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
their starting goaltender (darcy kuemper) had a really cool mask commissioned for one specific game last year that was honoring the best goalie in franchise history, olie kolzig (olie the goalie, they called him) aka "kolzilla". hence the godzilla mask theme for that one game:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
for certain special events, goalies might get custom pads made too! so like last year, for example, the caps' backup goalie (charlie lindgren) got these made for a special outdoor game the team was going to play in called the Stadium Series:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pretty slick!
if you're interested in seeing some cool goalie masks, here's a list of some of the best ones from the last couple of seasons. here's a top 12 list of masks in the nhl this season (some of these are really awesome). and here's a list of some of the most iconic masks of all time, not just in recent memory.
in general, if you're looking to get into goalie mask art, i'd recommend following artist david gunnarsson on instagram; he designs a ton of masks for goalies around the world. you can see them all here, and this is an article about him from ESPN.

Hi. I'm a Boston Pride fan with some free time coming up and an ESPN+ account. What are some of your favorite non-Pride games from this season I should watch?

Metropolitan Riveters v. Minnesota Whitecaps on December 3rd - Riveters almost come back from a 4-0 deficit, but heroics from Amanda Leveille bring the Whitecaps to victory
Minnesota Whitecaps v. Connecticut Whale on Dec 10, 2022 - One of the craziest third periods ive ever seen, czech stars Denisa Krizova v. Katerina Mrazova for some Narrative TM
Toronto Six v. Buffalo Beauts on December 16th - Outdoor game! RIYL crazy goalie performances especially, it was a tight game but both goaltenders had some heroics
Toronto Six v. Montreal Force on January 7th - First time the two Canadian teams play each other, evenly matched game with a goal from Brooke Stacey who is one of my personl favorites

Kevin C. Young (September 16, 1966) is a former athlete. He was the winner of the 400-meter hurdles at the 1992 Summer Olympics. In the final of this event he set a world record and Olympic record of 46.78 seconds, the first time the 47-second barrier was broken, and a world record that stood for nearly 29 years until it was broken by Karsten Warholm on July 1, 2021.
He became the 400 m hurdles world champion the following year, winning at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics with a time of 47.18 seconds. He had an unusual hurdling technique of switching between 12 and 13 strides between the hurdles, departing from the 13-stride technique popularized by Edwin Moses.
His performances declined after 1993. He was inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2006.
At Jordan High School, the same high school that Florence Griffith-Joyner had attended years earlier, he was first successful as a 110-meter hurdler, finishing in third place at the 1984 CIF California State Meet. As a UCLA” walk-on”, he was in 5th place at the 1985 Pac-10 championships running the 400-meter hurdles in 51.09 seconds. This all changed his sophomore year. Limiting the amount of time and effort in other events (110 hurdles, triple jump, and long jump) he applied more detail to the 400-meter hurdles and 4×400-meter relay.
In 1992, he won his first USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships title and was unbeaten before the Barcelona Olympics. Running in lane 4, he appeared to have the slowest reaction to the gun on the field. Only he has ever perfected the 12-stride pattern to success.
He became the first-ever ESPY award winner in track presented by ESPN.
He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity initiated into the Gamma Xi Chapter at UCLA. He is an artist with work on display through the Art of the Olympians. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

So Dean Smith and John Wooden lots of books after they left coaching, continuing to work. Neither lived in a retirement home, they lived independent. They stayed connected with their former colleagues and players. So they had a very active social life after retiring as well. No retirement home for them.

5. Achievements and milestones
Throughout my internship I accomplished many achievements and milestones that I have been incredibly grateful and lucky enough to achieve. Some of my achievements and milestones may have been minor but to me they all played such a big part in my internship experience.
Some of my smaller achievements was what was seen in the classroom and how mental health and wellbeing in young kids is important to address and how something like a program and a few outdoor basketball sessions can make a great change in a kid’s life. An achievement in my internship was seeing all the kids experience the program and see the results during and at the end of the program. Another minor achievement was being able to organise my life around my internship and have a positive work life balance. A big achievement was being able to manage my contracted working hours at the hospital as well as complete my large amount of internship hours within a timely matter. Achievements in an organisation can create a large amount of motivation in the worker and can improve their strengths greatly (Van Yperen, & Orehek, 2014).
Some milestones also included working along alongside lots of different people each day and going to different schools throughout the week and presenting to them to cater to their needs. In multiple schools that I attended, there were a few kids with special needs in the classroom, which meant that we needed to adapt the program and how we taught the program to that child. It was great to be able to work one on one with some of these kids and work with them in identifying their emotions.
My main achievement throughout my internship was being offered a casual game day operations role with the phoenix. This was a massive achievement for me and something that I was extremely excited about. The operations role made me realise how much I loved being a part of the behind the scenes during a game and made me find one of the areas I would love to work in. Working my first shift in operation was terrifying seeing all the players around me and having to act calm and collected. I recently finished my last shift with the game day operations crew and the season ends for the phoenix. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that I was given to be a aprt of something so amazing.
Overall, I have been extremely proud of my achievements and milestones throughout my internship with the South East Melbourne Phoenix. I believe that although not all my achievements were big, they all made the experience one to remember.

BRICK by BRICK: Burkle Building WLU Baseball into A Contender
Tumblr media
Outside the temperature is below freezing, sometimes approaching the teens or single digits with a wind chill in negative numbers. Looking out the window of his office, Eric Burkle sees a campus covered in snow. But today, any day – even winter days with extreme cold, blustery winds and snow – is a baseball day for Burkle. Once the 2024 season commences, Burkle will be in his 12th season as the head coach of the West Liberty University baseball team. For most, baseball is a spring season thing, with greening grass, flower and tree buds, warming temperatures. Not for Burkle; for him, baseball is a calendar thing, running the full 365. “We’re 12 months a year now,” Burkle said. “The game. . . if you go to The Highlands (sports complex) this time of year, there’s little kids. We just played in a winter league for my little one (his young son). Wheeling University is in the Highlands complex. We’re in our indoor facility. We’re 12 months a year now. “Baseball is that sport, for one, you can’t stop hitting. Pitchers will take a little bit of a break for some arm care stuff. But if a kid wants to play at this level now, he’s 12 months a year constant. It’s constantly swinging a bat.” The game of baseball has been in Burkle's life since he was a young player in South Wheeling. How then, in West Liberty, W.Va., is baseball (and softball) a year-round sport? How can players work out or practice knowing that not only water but skin, ears, fingers, etc., will freeze? It’s an inside thing. His Hilltoppers can go inside the Belmont Savings Bank Indoor Facility on the south end of campus, immediately turning a warm-weather, outdoor sport into a dead-of-winter opportunity to work. The first annual Leadoff Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 10, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the event beginning at 6:30 p.m. The location? Of course, inside the BSB indoor facility. It’s a chance to show off the facility. The event includes a catered meal, a meet-the-team video and a Night at the Races fundraiser. ESPN lead college baseball analyst Mike Rooney will serve as the keynote speaker. Tickets are $75 per person, and you can direct questions to Burkle at 304 639-5989. Burkle sums up what guests will experience entering the facility in one word: Wow! “We’re going to showcase our practice facility. When you walk in that practice facility it’s a wow factor. You walk in you don’t see football lines; you just see baseline lines on that turf. You’re like, ‘this is just for baseball!’ It’s excellent, it’s a wow factor where we can go live,” Burkle said. Because practices in Blatnik Hall were starting to in Burkle’s words, “clog up some student life time,” he and former women’s softball head coach Herb Minch were given a budget from then-university President Stephen Greiner to pursue an alternative. They formed a committee, worked with President Greiner and attracted Belmont Savings Bank as a lead donor. Other entities joined the force, and they completed the task, taking about three years. “There’s D1 schools that don’t have what we have here on campus. Our facilities are excellent. I can’t quit saying it, that thing is such a godsend for us. I can hit ground balls and I don’t have to worry about being on the basketball floor. I can hit ground balls, we can go live, our outfielders get work. It’s deep enough in the center that we can throw fly balls, catchers pop-ups. We can get done everything we need to get done.” Burkle is known to be tough but fair with his ballplayers at West Liberty. Wanted: Tough Kids Burkle’s roster has many players from schools in the Ohio Valley, but with time, persistence, improved facilities and administration assistance he in recent years chipped away at the barrier that is the Pennsylvania border. Now the head coach finds he is getting more substantive discussions, considerations and commitments from Western Pennsylvania-based players. It helps improve the roster for the baseball team and continues to expand the student base from a coveted nearby area. “Yes, we do have some local kids. We’re expanding into the Pittsburgh market a good bit. It’s always been a tough market for us with Seton Hill, Slippery Rock, Cal (Pa). But now we’re sneaking in there and we’re trying to convince some of those kids that, hey, West Lib’s a pretty good place to go play baseball,” Burkle said. “Working with our new administration here, we’re trying to find ways to make those kids in this region come back to West Lib. So that’s a big thing, working with Dr. (Tim) Borchers (newly appointed school president who began July 1, 2023) has been a lot of fun. He knows that regionally Pennsylvania and Ohio obviously are going to have more athletes. So, he’s trying to keep us in those markets, trying to make it affordable for those kids to come here. “The kid we’re looking for could be anywhere from the marginal student up to the 4.4 high school GPA. But we’re looking for that tough kid. That tough kid that will still shovel the sidewalk, run a hammer. The kid that when he comes in, he’s willing to do what he needs to do to work.” Burkle developed an old-school, work-hard philosophy from playing for Gary Zelinski at Wheeling Park High School and coaching with Jim Wodusky at Wheeling Central Catholic High School. He left high school coaching to join legendary coach Bo McConnaughy’s West Liberty staff as an assistant in 2008, serving five years in that role before taking over as head coach. He’s been able to meld old school with new age to remain true to his experience while relating well to the current player. “What I’ve done, I’ve kind of gone in the middle. I’ve learned to adapt to the new-age kid, and I can still be me. I can still be tough, and I can still be hard on them, and I can still be sarcastic at times. I’m a little bit of both (old and new school). I think we’ve done a good job here,” Burkle said. “We don’t lose kids to the portal here. We’ve had two kids go in the portal, one because he was from Florida and went back home. The other one was going to go D1 and decided to come back, so we’ve lost one kid to the portal. So, our retention rate here, they like what we’re doing here. Over the years I think we’ve put a good mixture of old school, new school and blended it.” The Hilltoppers' head coach has learned how to blend his old-school style with more modern coaching methods during his career. Leave It on the Field The mixture seems to be working. Burkle has compiled a 221-281 (.440) record, ranking him second in school history in career wins. His resume also includes: eight 20+ win seasons; six consecutive 20+ win seasons from 2013-18; and eight conference tournament appearances, one WVIAC (2013) and seven MEC (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2023). The build has Burkle excited for the upcoming season; he sees great potential for the 2024 Hilltoppers. “For one, I think we’re going to be pretty good,” Burkle admitted. “I return every starter but one. I’ve got experience at every position. We’ve got experience on the mound. We’ve got what I think is the best closer in the MEC in Trevor Thomas. There hasn’t been many seasons where I felt like, man this could be the one. My take on our team is, ‘Hey, listen boys, this is it. This is the one.’ “(The players are) going to see a pre-season poll where we’re not first. They’re going to think that Charleston is the best team in the MEC. My pitching coach told them, ‘Writers don’t get to pick who wins the MEC. That’s on you.’ “So, we put it on them. We turned it around on them and said, ‘Hey, listen, Charleston doesn’t decide who wins the MEC. You decide. You have a say in that. You have a vote.’ So, we put it on them. And I think right now, being six weeks away, we play February 24, so they’re chomping at the bit.” Actually, the Hilltoppers open with doubleheaders at Malone College in Mason, Ohio, on back-to-back days February 23 & 24. Until then, most people will be thinking about the difficulties winter and its weather present on a daily basis. For Burkle, his thoughts and his efforts will focus on baseball, a lot of baseball. Finding Your Golfing Joy In Lake Charles, Louisiana Long and widely recognized as “Louisiana's Playground,” Lake Charles, located in the southwest part of the state, is a very special place and should be on every golfer’s radar. It was so easy to get to.  In my case, flying in through Houston, then a short flight to find some joy. Lake Charles recently launched a new tourism campaign aptly named “As Much Joy As You Can Pack In,” and I could not be more in agreement. I’d been there before for professional bass fishing while working for ESPN. My memories of fresh and delicious seafood, nightlife, and great outdoor activities like kayaking were as quickly refreshed as I was. We stayed at L'Auberge Casino Resort, featuring a massive sportsbook and grill. My room was beautifully decorated, and while there, we took a short walk to The Contraband Bayou Golf Club, designed by Tom Fazio, which emphasizes the marsh and lowland features of a natural environment.  It’s a 7,000-yard, par-71 championship golf layout with ample tee boxes for golfers of any skill. The resort and golf club are a short walk to yet another, The Golden Nugget Casino, which features many shopping and dining options and a live poker room for those who enjoy some Texas Hold ‘Em. The Country Club at Golden Nugget is a masterpiece by designer Todd Eckenrode.  It, too is a 7,000-yard gem that is certain to please. My two takeaways are to stay out of the rough and then go enjoy a chef-crafted meal in the elegant, full-service clubhouse. Lake Charles is also known as "The Festival Capital of Louisiana" and hosts more than 75 of them annually. The most famous of which is the second-largest Mardi Gras in the state behind New Orleans. The home city of the NFL’s Saints is known for incredible cuisine, just as in Lake Charles. Located within L'Auberge Resort are Drago’s Seafood Restaurant and Mexican restaurant Johnny Sánchez, which originated in the Big Easy by award-winning chef Aarón Sánchez. At Drago’s, you can’t go wrong with the grilled oysters as an appetizer and the eggplant parmesan for your main course, or for that matter, any seafood specialty. The breakfast burrito at Johnny Sánchez is a winner as well if your evening plans are spoken for. The National Golf Club of Louisiana is a fun and challenging track for golfers of all levels. I was particularly inspired by the National Golf Club of Louisiana in nearby Westlake and how the terrific team of young golf professionals anticipated everything we might have wanted, including helping me adjust my grip on the range, which made for a better performance on the course.  Make time for a lesson, and you won’t regret it. “The Natty” was a fun and challenging layout, and I can’t wait to return.  I highly recommend the hamburger sliders if you stay for happy hour at The Max.  The Max is named in honor of a legendary local high school coach; the staff was as amazing as the cuisine. This was no typical 19th-hole menu as my playing partner for the day devoured every bite of The Surf N Turf – a burger that only Lake Charles could offer.  It’s a three-blend beef patty layered with jalapeno mayonnaise, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and blackened shrimp. It looked so good I named it as the “Big Max,” though I don’t see them changing it anytime soon. Golf in Lake Charles, located halfway between Houston and Baton Rouge via Interstate 10, features indigenous plants, picturesque backdrops with birds and other wildlife, and beautiful scenery. Even if you’ve been there before, you must make time to play Mallard Golf Club, a Scottish links-inspired design and the newest addition to the area. Legend has it that the head pro there carded a hole-in-one the day the course opened in 2021.  I learned this when I shared news about my birdie on the same hole. Yet another reason to return. At the risk of reading more like a food review, I highly recommend trying a couple of craft beers at Crying Eagle Brewing, and the crab cakes are a must at Pat’s of Henderson, both a short drive from the resort and well worth the effort.
