Late Night Talking
Summary: Jill opens up about her background to Ethan. It takes place in OH1 Ch10.
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x MC (Jillian Valentine).
Word Count: 2356 words.
A/N: In other words, Ethan likes Boston Jillian too. This was inspired by @jamespotterthefirst's book 1 replay, and I felt like I had to add to one of my favorite moments in the series. Also, huge shoutout to the lovely @bex-la-get for reading it first and encouraging me to write again.

“What kind of doctor do you see yourself being in ten years?”
The question took her by surprise, and Jillian moved to refill her glass of wine as she thought about her answer. She closed her eyes for a few seconds, simply enjoying the Miami night’s soft breeze that the waves of the Atlantic brought, while Ethan stared at her with genuine curiosity, taking his time to study every crease on her face in a dazzle.
“If I tell you this…” Jillian started, finally looking back at him, “Can you promise me to keep this between us? To not tell anyone back at Boston?”
“Did you do something illegal?” Ethan teased, earning a soft snort from her.
“No.”
“Then I won’t say anything. You can trust me.”
It was a simple statement, but that meant so much for both of them. Ethan had trusted her with the whole Naveen situation, and he wanted nothing more than for Jill to trust him as much as he did her.
“Okay, here goes nothing.” she took a huge gulp of wine before focusing her gaze on his azure eyes, and she shook her head in amusement, “I’m sure you’ve already deciphered some of my life.”
“Wasn’t hard to figure out.” he shrugged, “Back at the baseball game, you excluded yourself when you made a statement about the debt interns have to deal with, which made me suspect that you come from a wealthy family that paid your medical school tuition in full, hence why you’re not in debt. You also mentioned that your family prepared you to deal with health representatives, among other nuisances. And lastly, for the past half hour, you’ve been slightly scrunching up your nose every time you take a sip of the wine, probably because you’re used to finer options.”
“This is good wine.” Jill denied.
“No, this is regular wine. And you know it.”
“Maybe I’m just a wine snob.”
“Oh, that’s for sure. But I doubt that’s a secret that you want kept from the people in Boston.”
Jill let out a breathy chuckle and took another sip of her glass, trying hard not to scrunch her nose this time, “I hate that you’re so good at reading me.”
She hadn’t said Ethan was good at reading people; she’d said he was good at reading her. For some reason, that knowledge made him unbelievably happy.
“You’re not wrong, though.” Jillian admitted, looking away vulnerably as she finally admitted what she had been hiding from everyone for years, “I do come from a wealthy family.”
“And that’s what you don’t want to be known?”
“When people find out you come from money, they start treating you differently.” she explained, fidgeting with her fingers, “Suddenly who you are as a person doesn’t matter as much as what you have or what you can get. I don’t want my friends to think differently of me… I don’t want anyone to think differently of me. But it’s more than just that.”
“Your parents are doctors…” Ethan guessed.
“Yes, veterinarians.”
It took Ethan a few seconds to put two and two together, and realization dawned on his face, “Your family are the owners of The Valentine Clinic. Which means you’re also–”
“Senator Westbrook’s niece, yes. Mom’s side of the family.” she chuckled bitterly, looking down at the wine in the swirling glass.
“Most people would gloat about that.”
“The thing is… I like Boston Jillian.”
“Excuse me?” he frowned in confusion.
“I like the person I am, the person I’ve become since I moved to Boston.” she opened up, taking a shuddering breath, and Ethan listened attentively, “My life in New York was… complicated. The whole socialite environment is draining, and overwhelming. Back home, it never mattered what I wanted for my life or who I was; all that mattered was my reputation and what people thought about me, what people made of me. Everything about my life was scrutinized and could potentially be turned into a scandal. But it was okay because I was a Valentine, and that’s all that mattered to people. I didn’t get to bemy own self, I was the person I was expected to be. But it gets worse… because being that relevant and being surrounded by that kind of people, that ambiance can really change someone. It starts with the feeling of superiority, thinking other people are beneath you, and feeling entitled to anything. And that influence, that much power on a teenager is dangerous. But as long as you stay relevant and you have money, you can get away with almost anything. And that’s just wrong.” when Jill looked back at him, Ethan noticed her whiskey eyes brimming with a couple of tears, which he gently wiped, causing her cheeks to tint with a soft pink color, and he pulled his hand back in embarrassment, “So, I hate New York Jillian. I’m not proud of the person I was back then. And I know I was just a teenager doing what she needed to survive, but I still hate it. I never felt like myself. I was Jillian Valentine, teenage socialite, Doctors Matthew and Haley Valentine’s daughter, the Senator’s niece, but I was never me, not really. And the pressure and expectations from being a Valentine were too much.”
And with her declaration, more pieces of the puzzle fell in place in Ethan’s mind. Now he understood where many of her actions came from. And he was mesmerized at the person he was discovering her to be.
“Jillian, I’m sure your friends wouldn’t blame you. I don’t blame you. All of it would be too much on anyone. And like you said, you were a child.” Ethan reassured her and placed a warm hand over her arm, ignoring the jolts of electricity that her contact brought.
“When I moved away for college, I realized the magnitude of the bubble I lived in all my life. I realized that the real world wasn’t like that, that life didn’t have to be like that. So I tried to put as much distance between me and them, tried to stop being a Valentine, or at least what that entailed in Manhattan’s society. I left New York behind, and Boston was my fresh start.”
“That’s when you applied to medical school.”
“Which was a mistake in their eyes.” she sighed sadly, and Ethan stayed silent, urging her to continue, “For my family, there are only two paths; law school, like the rest of the Westbrooks, or vet school, like every Valentine.”
“And you chose med school.” Ethan stared in amazement.
“I worked at the Clinic as a teenager, and I fell in love with medicine. I knew it was what I wanted. And then I stumbled upon your work.” Jill grinned breathtakingly, making his heart skip a beat, “And I realized there was another way, that I could pursue medicine and step out of my family’s shadow. So yes, I applied, thanks to you. My family was furious with me, but they weren’t going to deter me; I knew this was the path for me. Still, I’m grateful that my parents paid my tuition even when they didn’t approve. After that, I pretty much cut ties with them. I promised to not use my trustfund unless it was an emergency, and started working as a waitress to survive.”
She had stated that previous times, how he had been an inspiration for her to go to medical school and become a doctor. He had heard that before, from several people. It wasn’t an uncommon statement in his life. Though, most people did it to kiss ass and gain his favor; Jillian didn’t. Realizing the extent of the role his life’s work played in Jill’s decision left him speechless. Now he could see in her eyes how much his work meant to her.
He nodded, trying to keep her talking, desperate to find out more about her, “You left that life behind. That’s why you don’t want people to find out about your life in New York, because it’s not you.”
“Exactly. I love my parents and my siblings, but being a Valentine was hard. I don’t want to go back to that, ever. Though, even if I tried to put as much distance between us, there’s something I know for sure.”
“Which is?”
“I want to be the kind of doctor that my parents are.” she rounded up, going back to the original question, and let out a laugh of disbelief, like she couldn’t believe what she was saying either, “They’re amazing doctors. Even my older brother and sister. They cure major diseases every day, even contributing with research of their own.”
“Who says you can’t do that?”
“Do you remember my struggle the first few months? And even now as the first-ranking intern, I feel like I’ll drown at any second.”
“But you’ve already got the persistence down.” Ethan insisted, “And that counts for much more than you think.”
“Really?”
“I’ve never seen you give up on anything yet. That’s important.” he scooted closer to her almost automatically.
“Maybe it’s a family trait.” she shrugged, looking back at the waves, “And it’s different, they have their own hospital, so they make the rules, it’s easier for them, but I’ve seen them do so much good. I’d be insane to not want to be like them.”
“What would you say is your main goal?” he enquired, his undivided attention on her.
“I have many, but I think the main one would be to make a difference in patient care.”
“More than you do now?”
“I’m only an intern.” Jill pointed out, “I do barely anything now.”
“That’s not true.” Ethan noticed he still had his hand on her arm, but instead of removing it, he gently ran his fingers across her smooth skin, making her sigh in content, “I’ve seen how hard you work for your patients. Even if they don’t always value it, you do make a difference.”
“But not enough. I helped one uninsured patient receive care, but I can’t find loopholes for everyone.” her frustration then turned to determination, “The entire system needs to change, and I want to be a part of it.”
“And I have no doubt you’ll find a way.” Ethan smiled softly, “That’s the same drive I saw in your application.”
Jill’s cheeks flared up once again, but she tried to downplay her embarrassment with a teasing remark, “Enough drive to lead the diagnostics team?”
Ethan let out a few chuckles, shaking his head in amusement, “It’s less fun than it looks, I promise you that. I wanted this job until the exact second Naveen told me it was mine.”
Her eyes softened at the mention of the older doctor, “When Doctor Banerji is well again, I’m sure you’ll feel differently.”
“Perhaps. And perhaps one day, it’ll be yours to lead.”
“Are you serious?”
“I did say perhaps.”
“So you do think I’m the future of medicine.”
Ethan couldn’t help the laugh that escaped past his lips, “I remember telling you not to let it get to your head.”
“Too late.” Jill grinned, before turning serious once again, “It just seems like… the higher I aspire, the more I stand to lose.”
“I… certainly understand that.”
The attending got up from his seat and went to the balcony railing, leaning on it with his wine glass in both hands. Jill followed him slowly, brushing his side slightly as she settled beside him.
“What you saw tonight, that’s not me.” it was Ethan’s turn to open up, and he gazed out at the dark sea pensively, “I don’t gamble… on anything. I don’t take chances. Medicine is an assembly of facts leading to a conclusion. Once you know the rules and understand the diseases you’re working with, the risk should be minimal. Your decisions are informed, and you choose the safest path. But that card game… I’ve never done anything like that before.”
“I don’t know. It seemed like a pretty well-informed decision to me. A decision you made based on your people-reading skills.”
“Maybe, but risking Naveen’s treatment on a game? Having to hope I’d judged Declan’s character well enough to risk losing instead of using a winning hand? There were too many variables, I could have lost everything”
“But you didn’t, and you were right. Your risk paid off.”
“It did… and I’m beginning to realize…” Ethan turned to look at Jillian with an intensity that was foreign for both of them, “There are some things that are worth any risk.”
She stared up, meeting his eyes, and the look she gave him was enough to make him forget about everything other than the woman before him. A look that made his heart flutter and his lips to part as he took a sharp intake of breath, while staring at her with total admiration, unable to look away. The golden specs dancing in her caramel eyes seemed even brighter under the moonlight. Ethan glanced at her redenned lips hesitantly but with undenying desire, and noticed her gaze fixed on his own mouth. He leaned closer, and their breaths mixed as both of them breathed heavily.
Jill’s heart started to race and thump loudly against her ribcage at the close proximity. And when she leaned closer to him as well, Ethan’s breath hitched in his throat, and his own heart felt like stopping. Holding his deep blue gaze, Jillian reached tentatively out and touched his cheek tenderly.
“Jill, I…”
“I know.” she whispered, not wanting to disrupt the magical atmosphere.
Ethan closed his eyes and leaned into her touch, his stubble fresh and rough beneath her fingertips. Their noses bumped, and both of their bodies filled with excitement, nerves and exhilaration. Ethan opened his eyes once again to stare at hers.
It was as if a dam broke within him.
In one strong move, he looped his arm around her waist, pulling Jill close until their bodies were flushed together. And after what felt like an eternity of waiting, Ethan hungrily captured her lips, finally kissing her.

Birthday Surprise
Prologue
Dr. Ethan Ramsey had many talents; planning a birthday party for his partner, Dr. Lilac Allende wasn’t one of them. As much as it would hurt his ego to ask for help, she was more important. So, he found himself seeking assistance from the unlikeliest of sources: Dr. Casey MacTavish who was a close friend of Lilac’s and his teammate, Dr. Tobias Carrick’s girlfriend.
Casey, of course, took over and the idea of a simple birthday dinner snowballed into a surprise birthday party on the eve of the medical conference that Lilac was speaking at close to home. Before Ethan knew it, Casey and a flock of eight other women, all esteemed doctors from around the country that would be in town for the conference, took over the celebration.
Ethan had certainly heard Lilac mention them all before; apparently, they were all founding members of Future Women Leaders in Medicine, so they couldn’t really be bad, he thought. Right?
The ecstatic expression on Lilac’s face when she saw them after walking into the restaurant where the party was being held had certainly allayed his concerns. But the way they shared secret smiles with each other and spoke in code, told him that it was going to be an interesting night.
------------------------
Charley Valentine was having a conversation with Casey when she noticed that Genevieve had stopped talking and was smiling towards the doorway. Charley turned her head to see what, or rather, who had caught the other doctor’s attention.
She smiled and grabbed a glass of champagne and headed towards the door. Lilac was standing just in the doorway next to Dr. Ethan Ramsey, who was looking just a little bit satisfied that he had managed to keep this a surprise from Lilac.
Charley hugged her friend. Lilac hugged her back and pulled her to the side. “Except for Casey, you all said that you weren’t able to get away!”
Charley laughed. “We wouldn’t miss the chance to see your speech tomorrow! It was so convenient that it fell right in line with your birthday!”
Charley handed her the champagne and turned to Ethan. “Sorry, I didn’t pass any Scotch on my way over.”
Charley led Lilac away from Ethan and towards the other eight women who were all smiles and laughter.
One of them called out, “You didn’t think we’d miss this, did you?”
Charley tapped her glass.
“Now that we are all here, I’d like to propose a toast to Lilac. Youngest Director of Diagnostics at Edenbrook. First one of us to be asked to present the keynote speech at a major conference. I’ve been in awe of you ever since I read about how you stood up to big pharma in your intern year, and I’ve loved sharing ideas with you for the past few years in FWLM. Thank you for all you do.”
Lilac hugged her and Charley looked around. “Who’s next?”
Silence permeated as the group of intelligent, fearless women, all masters in their field, looked at each other awkwardly and then — horrors — even giggled slightly. Apparently none were immune to the possibility of a little bit of stage fright.
“Oh, for Pete’s—” A tall redhead looked up from her phone and shook her strawberry waves. “Guess it has to be me, then, amiright ladies?”
Lilac caught eyes with Dr. Brooke Spiers, colleague and friend, and bit her lip as she held back a smirk, accompanied by a mock-disparaging headshake.
“Didn’t think you’d ever be one to say no to being the center of attention,” she called out as Brooke strode to the front of the group, wobbling only slightly in her heels.
Ethan, who agreed with his girlfriend’s assessment of the...outspoken Dr. Spiers, only snorted.
“You know me,” Brooke responded with a wink, holding her champagne glass high. “This is to Lilac. My first friend at Edenbrook during that tumultuous intern year—”
“—Yeah, until you ditched me to fast track to your cardiology fellowship—”
“—I said first friend, not last or only; god you’re a needy bitch.” Brooke paused as the room laughed at her snarky candor, Lilac the loudest of them all. “Also, I don’t think the words ‘fast track’ and ‘cardiology fellowship’ have ever been used in the same sentence, but thanks for the vote of confidence, babe.”
“Anyway,” she looked pointedly at Lilac, “what I was saying was, there is no greater gift in my mind than being able to toast this ultimate gem of a woman. The best and brightest in your field, the better half of one of the greatest medical partnerships known to man—”
Ethan rolled his eyes but, as he couldn’t dispute Brooke’s assessment, he simply pulled Dr. Allende closer instead.
“—and the most loyal and amazing person I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.” Brooke smiled warmly, her eyes sparkling with mirth and affection. “Love you, girl. Thanks for all you’ve taught me and all you continue to do to have my back. To have all our backs.”
She raised her glass up in the air. “To Lilac!”
“To Lilac!” the room echoed, a unanimous affirmation of Brooke’s words, as the toastmaster in question downed her glass of champagne in one gulp, the other arm wrapped around Lilac, who had come in for a quick, grateful embrace.
“Alright!” Brooke turned to the group as she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, one arm still around Dr. Allende’s shoulders. “Next?”
“Eh-hrm,” a young woman with cascading, blonde hair caught everyone’s attention as she got up from her seat and sauntered to the front, taking her place where Brooke had stood previously. “I have a few words for our dear friend Lilac.”
An impish smile on Lilac’s lips grew wider while she gazed affectionately at her fellow friend, Dr. Marchia Bisognin.
“That’s my girl!” the birthday girl exclaimed loudly, hands clapping, unable to contain the tender pride expanding in her chest. Three years ago, Marchia wouldn’t even be able to stand in front of two people, let alone a small crowd. Yet, now, she found confidence, poise in herself—all thanks to Lilac.
“When I met you at that World Health Summit, I knew you were bound to get me into some trouble, babe,” Marchia shrugged, words laced with a hint of amusement, allowing a sheepish grin to spread across her face. “And I bet you’re going to get us into some shenanigans, too, tonight!”
A tide of uproarious laughter escaped the flock of beautiful women once again.
“But all of us wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you, my dear,” she continued, a warm smile trembling to be released. “So, let me raise a toast to one of the most inspiring, brilliant, and thoughtful individuals I have ever known, Lilac Valentina Allende.”
Everyone cheered as Marchia raised her own glass, glittering under the golden light.
“May your life be filled with love, happiness, and of course,” she paused for a moment, a mischievous gleam evident in her eyes. “Lots of incredible, mind-blowing sex, because Lord knows you’re insatiable, babe.”
Lilac laughed out loud, while her handsome companion—the ever-stoic Dr. Ethan Ramsey—tried to hide the flush spreading across his cheeks that threatened to embarrass him.
Marchia approached the brunette doctor, lips curved into a beaming smile. Bodies crashing in an overjoyed hug, she leaned into her and added, “We all love you, babe.”
“Alright, who wants to go next?” Marchia asked, looking back at her friends and associates.
“Now that I’ve had a drink and I’ve loosened up a bit, I will.” Victoria stepped forward as everyone chuckled.
“This could take a while.” Lilac muttered.
“I’ve kept it short and sweet,” she quipped. “The first time I met Lilac, I nearly didn’t make it to the conference as my alarm didn't go off. I was running super late and only made it when someone held the door open for me to get into the lecture hall. It’s fair to say Lilac found it amusing which is why we sat next to each other and since then it’s been nothing but laughter and smiles.”
“You are the funniest and nicest person I’ve ever met and I’m so glad I am able to call you my friend. I can’t wait to move to Boston next year with Ben and I’m so excited that we’ll be in the same city. And Ethan, if you ever hurt her, just know that you’ll have to deal with all of us. Cheers!” Victoria raised her glass smiling.
“Wow, that really was short and sweet.” Lilac laughed.
“I don’t make promises I can’t keep.” Victoria laughed. “Who’s next because I really want to get started on that buffet.”
“I’ll go,” said a young woman with bright red hair.
Natalie stood up, grabbing a nearby glass of champagne as she began her speech.
“First of all, happy birthday, Lilac. I hope this one, followed by every one after, is memorable and full of happiness! I’m so lucky to be surrounded by some of the most incredible women I’ve ever met. And, while I already knew Gen, Casey, and Charley from school, I never would have met everyone else if it hadn’t been for Lilac bringing us all together.”
“Lil, you light up every room you walk into and you’re the most badass bitch to ever walk this earth.” Natalie raised her glass towards the birthday girl. “I’m so proud of you and I’m so grateful to call you my friend. Happy birthday, babe. To Lilac!”
Everyone else followed suit, echoing her sentiments with their glasses raised in Lilac’s direction.
“All right, who’s next?” said Natalie.
“I’ll go!” Another blonde stepped forward, holding her glass high in the air.
“My dear friend, it’s truly been an honor to know you and watch you become the amazing doctor you are. I remember the first day we met, when Patrick introduced us when I went to visit him at UCLA. He said ‘I know you two will get along great’. Which I admit, I wasn’t completely convinced, because you were so outgoing and confident. I was the opposite. But, he was right. A shock, to us both I’m sure. Because when is he ever right?”
Genevieve giggled, causing Lilac to laugh as well. A knowing smile on both their faces.
“And I’m glad he was. Because knowing you has changed my life for the better. You’ve taught me so much, inspired me with your bravery and strength to never give up. And I thank you for that. So today of all days, I am so happy to celebrate you, Lilac Allende. Happy birthday!”
Gen tilted her glass towards her friend, smiling brightly.
“Okay who wants to go next? Because if I keep talking I’ll start crying.”
Dr. Cassie Valentine was too busy flirting with her fiance, Jackson, to notice her friends looking at her with amusement. If it hadn't been for Brooke loudly clearing her throat behind her and Casey tapping her feet to capture her attention, Cassie would have missed the entire point of the evening.
Glancing sheepishly at everyone, she stepped up to join her friends near the front of the room, grabbing a glass of champagne on the way.
"When my fellow Hopkins alum Vic first told me about Lilac and how she'd make a great co-chair for the Future Women Leaders in Medicine initiative, I was skeptical," she said, shrugging her shoulders.
"Sure, I'd heard about her exploits as an intern and her appointment to lead the famous Edenbrook Diagnostics team. But internal medicine always thinks they understand the human body better than psychiatry does the mind, so I kept my counsel. However, one meeting was all it took for me to realize that she is everything that people said she was, and a whole lot more than they can even fathom."
"She would be perfect," said Cassie with a laugh, "if only she'd realize that running actually is good for you rather than complaining endlessly about it. I love her anyway and couldn't ask for a better co-chair. To Lilac and defying expectations, one giant step at a time. Happy birthday, babe!"
With that, Cassie raised her glass in a salute and smiled at the woman whose lifelong friendship she’d treasure forever.
“Jill, Casey?” she asked, glancing at the two women left. “Which one of you wants to go next?”
“I’ll go.” Jill grinned radiantly and walked confidently to the front.
“Jesus Christ,” Ethan muttered under his breath. Jill was like the little sister he never wanted, so he could only dread the kind of speech she had prepared.
Jillian ran a hand through her ginger bronze hair as she joined the group of women, took a deep breath and faced the crowd with grace.
“When I came to visit Ethan all those years ago, the last thing I expected was to see him completely enraptured by an intern. I had known Ethan for years, and the Dr. Ramsey I saw was nothing like the one I knew. It was like I was staring at the best version of his grumpy self. Because that’s what Lilac did to him, she brought out his best. They weren’t together then, but I clearly remember thinking, ‘I have to get to know her’. Of course, Ethan being Ethan tried to prevent it, but he should’ve known most of the time I get away with what I want.”
That earned a few half-hearted laughs among the crowd. Even Ethan’s lips were slightly curled upwards, “I hate you.”
Jill smirked, but refrained herself from teasing Ethan further. This was for Lilac. She shook her head softly and focused once again on her speech for her friend.
“The moment I met Lilac, everything just clicked in my mind, it all made sense; I understood why my brother’s best friend was so floored by her, and honestly, so was I. With her quick wit and undenying charm, Lilac has a warm aura that just pulls you in, whether you’re a patient, a colleague, or a stranger; she has a way to make everyone feel cared for. Along with her brilliant mind, she has a heart of gold.”
“It’s been an honor getting to know her professionally, but even more personally, and I feel so grateful for her,” the ginger-haired doctor sent her a dazzling smile, “Lil, my darling, you’re one of the best things to ever happen to all of us. You made us a family, one that I would never change for anything in this world. Without you, I wouldn’t have met these wonderful ladies, and none of us would be the women we are today. You’re an inspiration to all of us.”
“So, on this day, I want to toast to you, to celebrate all that you are, in all your wonderful glory. Here’s to Lilac Allende, the most brilliant and promising doctor her age, and the best friend a girl could ask for. I hope we get to celebrate by your side many years to come. I love you, Lil. Happy birthday,” Jill raised her flute and took a demure sip.
“Jill, amiga!” Lilac pushed through and gave her a huge hug, the gesture speaking enough for both of them.
“That wasn’t so bad,” Ethan looked relieved.
“Figured I would save the humiliation for your birthday,” Jill winked at him, causing him to scoff. “Besides, this is for Lilac, not for you. Wait for your turn, old man.”
“Hilarious,” he rolled his eyes.
“Don’t call victory yet,” Jill whispered, pointing covertly to the last blonde. “Casey still can. And you know she’s the… wildest of us.”
Liliac stretched her neck to survey the room, she raised an eyebrow and smirked when she caught Casey, giggling at something (likely inappropriate) her boyfriend Tobias was whispering in her ear.
“OK, MacTavish, can you save that mierda for later and get on with honoring me?” Liliac winked, “Some of us want to get to drinking and dancing, girl.”
Embarrassed, Casey jumped up from her seat, straightening her dress as she made her way to the front of the room.
“Hey, they were just saving the best for last,” Tobias heckled.
“Oh, Jesus, she’s not going to let him speak, is she?” Ethan grumbled.
Both women looked at their partners and all laughed when they playfully chided “Shut up!” at the same time.
Casey looked at Lilac and smiled, “We’ve gotta keep them in line!”
Lilac raised her glass and smiled, “You know it!” she said before downing her glass.
“Hey, wait! We didn’t finish the toast yet!” Gen called out, a half-filled champagne glass in her hand.
“She’s the birthday girl, she can do whatever she pleases,” Casey winked, “but, uhm, waiter, can we get a refill over here… for her? Thanks.”
“Anyway, I met Lilac poolside, during a conference in Key Biscayne our last year of med school,” continued Casey. “I remember thinking, who is this woman trying to one up me in that hot red bathing suit she had going on? But I didn’t actually meet her until we both made our way up to the bar to get one of the Penicillin cocktails they had lined up…”
She shrugged. “Hey neither of us named it… we thought it was tacky too.”
“Back to the story, some obnoxious man saw us approaching and he ran over and grabbed one of the two remaining drinks just before we arrived. We stared at each other, torn between our good-girl sides that were telling us to be polite, and our ‘I’m a broke med school student here for the free booze’ sides that really wanted to fight the other for the drink. Fortunately, a very handsome bartender named…”
“Miguel!” Lilac yelled.
“That’s right!” Casey laughed. “Miguel came up and said ‘Don’t worry ladies, there’s more where that came from.’ He placed a tray before us and walked off. Lilac and I looked at each other and, at the exact same time, said, ‘You take the drink, I’m going to get him’.”
All the women hollered at the punch line.
“That’s right!” Lilac laughed.
“Well, who won?” yelled Tobias as Ethan covered his face with a groan.
“That’s not the point,” Casey smiled.
“Ah, that means Lilac won,” Tobias winked.
“Oh, Jesus, Christ…” Ethan sighed.
“It’s OK, babe, it was a long time ago,” said Lilac, patting his knee.
“Be that as it may,” interrupted Casey, “That was the day I knew I met an exceptional woman. Someone who knew when to be serious, knew when to have fun, someone who knew right from wrong and was going to fight like hell to make this world of medicine, the world itself, a better place.”
Casey raised her glass.

Every Baby Name We Could Possibly Think Of
Naming your baby is a big decision, and with endless options, it can also be a difficult one. Whether you're going the traditional route or want something more unique (if so, read this first!) it's helpful to have a little, or a lot, of inspiration. Ahead, you'll find nearly every baby name we could think of (close to 1,000!). These aren't just random names we found in a book or concocted ourselves - they're almost all monikers we've heard being used, or we actually know someone who goes by the name. The Engagement Party
Summary: A week after Ethan popped the most important question, they finally decide to celebrate it properly
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Jillian Valentine)
Warnings: None, just fluff. Maybe a swear word or two
Word Count: 2934 words
Series: Something Happened on the Way to Forever
A/N: My two dorks are getting married in three weeks! So this idea wouldn't leave me alone, but it wasn't until @bex-la-get and @genevievemd encouraged me and helped me plan it that this came to be. Thank you my loves for indulging me in this! As always, feedback is appreciated. Also, huge credit to @genevievemd for the amazing edit!
Tumblr media
Ethan nursed the glass of whiskey in his left hand, staring pensively at the golden liquid swirling in gentle circles. Everything around him felt foreign, the social gathering promising to be everything he despised. Except, perhaps for the first time in his life, it wasn't.  He didn’t feel the familiar dread that accompanied such events, or the bone-deep exhaustion that came with forced socialization. In fact, he couldn't remember the last time he had felt so at ease at a party, let alone the last time he had truly enjoyed himself and the company.
Some would claim it was because he was the one being celebrated, but that wasn't true either; there had been plenty of occasions in which he had been the center of attention, the honoree. No, he knew better. This time was different. Because this time it wasn't about him.
It was about them.
Instinctively, his eyes sought her across the room until they finally settled on the familiar redhead. The corners of his lips turned upwards in a tender smile at the sight of his fiancée laughing with her friends.
Fiancée.
Ethan still couldn't believe that it had been a week already. A week since he dropped down on one knee and asked the most important question of his life. A week since Jillian had said yes to a lifetime with him. It felt surreal that it had been only a week, but at the same time, it had been at long last, like this was what life had always been supposed to be like. And maybe it was; he couldn’t truly remember how his day-to-day life had been prior to Jill; his memories seemed to be a blur, nothing important standing out except his medical accomplishments, and even they seemed to pale in comparison. His time with the ginger had shown him a whole other side of living.
It was funny how the universe worked; Ethan had never seen himself as the settle down kind of man, not the family type or the domestic ambiance. And yet, ever since that woman came into his life, it was everything he wanted. It felt like, despite their ups and downs, they had always been meant to end up here.
With the uncanny ability she seemed to have to know exactly what was on his mind, as if knowing he was thinking about her, Jillian’s eyes searched for him throughout the crowd, until finally connecting with his. She continued speaking with her friends, addressing whatever topic of conversation was being said, but her eyes never left his. He winked surreptitiously at her and a pretty blush spread on her cheeks, the reaction making Ethan’s heart skip a beat.
Their eye contact was broken by none other than Jackie Varma, waving a hand in front of Jill’s face, and the group of women turned to see what the bride-to-be was staring at. At finding him on the other end, Sienna beamed happily, Aurora smirked knowingly and Jackie rolled her eyes and pulled Jill away from his line of sight.
“You’re a goner.” someone beside Ethan mumbled, and he turned to the source of it.
“Like you’re one to talk.” Ethan discreetly pointed with his chin to the other side of the room, where the older Valentine woman was attending to every guest, even if they were at Naveen’s place.
“Harmless flirting.” Tobias denied, “It’s like a dance.”
“Sure.” Jill’s best friend, Hunter, joined, “If that’s what you tell everyone to soothe your ego from the constant rejection, then suit yourself.”
Ethan stifled a laugh, covering it up by taking a gulp of whiskey.
“It’s not like that.” Tobias’s smile was just a tad strained, but he tried to keep his cool façade, “Besides, tonight’s not about me.”
“You got that right.”
“How did you convince Naveen to let you have your engagement party at his lake house?” Tobias asked curiously.
“I didn’t.” Ethan pointed out with a scoff, “Jill and I didn’t even talk about having an engagement party, Naveen decided to throw us one.”
“Stop scowling.” Hunter chastised the older man, “It’s probably for the better.”
“What, his nosiness?”
“Thanks to his nosiness, you don’t have to endure a stuffy engagement party with Manhattan’s socialites.”
Ethan stared at him in horror, “Jill wouldn’t have suggested that.”
“Not J.” he agreed, “But her parents would’ve found a way. I’m telling you, Naveen offering to host this party is the better outcome. This way it’s more personal, heartfelt, and with only the important people attending.”
“Not her parents, though.”
“Matthew and Haley send their apologies.” the practically-adopted Valentine informed, “They got held up organizing a congress in Dubai. Luke and Kat are only here because they’re scheduled on later dates and they’re not part of the organizing committee.”
“It’s okay.” a new voice piped up, and Ethan immediately turned towards her, his body reacting to her presence and touch as she entwined their hands together, “I have all I need right here.”
“You’re disgusting.” Hunter chuckled under his breath as Jill pulled Ethan’s head down to join their lips in a heated but short-lived kiss.
“You’re literally here to celebrate our engagement. I think we’re entitled to a little PDA.” Jillian bumped Hunter’s hip to move him away, claiming her place by Ethan’s side, and stepped on her tiptoes to clean her dark red lipstick from her fiancé’s face.
“Hey.” Ethan leaned down and placed a kiss on top of her head, “I’ve barely seen you tonight.”
“Blame Jackie.” the woman let out an exasperated sigh, “She’s trying to keep us apart for the night because she thinks we’ll be unbearable.”
“She’s not wrong.” Hunter coughed sarcastically, “Maybe we should’ve tried harder.”
“You were in on it?” Jillian placed a hand over her heart in betrayal.
“Not enough, apparently.”
“Fuck off.” she pushed her best friend away with a scoff.
“Doesn’t matter, we’re together now.” Ethan pointed out and backed away slowly, pulling her with him to finally have a moment with her, “That’s better.”
“Infinitely.” she placed a light peck over the pulse on his neck, earning a shaky breath.
“Don’t start something you can’t finish.” Ethan warned her, placing the hand not holding his drink firmly on her hip to keep her in place and stop her if necessary.
“Oh, I intend to finish it. Later tonight. Multiple times, in fact.”
The man groaned under his breath and let his head hang as he closed his eyes, trying to regain back control and stop the mental images his brain was producing, “You’re being cruel, you know that?”
“I’ll make it up to you.” Jill promised in a sultry whisper.
“You better, because there are about fifteen pairs of eyes on us, so we can’t risk sneaking away.”
Her playful demeanor lessened as a worried look overtook her features, “Do you want to go? I can make up any excuse if your social batteries are drained and you want to leave.”
Holy shit, he absolutely loved her.
“No, it’s fine.” he reassured her, his right arm snaking around her waist and pulling her closer, but a wave of emotion invaded him as he realized once again how much she cared about him, and how far she was willing to go for him.
“Sure?”
“I’m sure. Besides, we’re in a room filled with mostly doctors; no medical excuse is going to be enough to fool them.” he teased her.
“I can get creative.”
“I’m sure. But I promise, it’s unnecessary.”
“So you’re really enjoying yourself?”
“I am.” he grinned down at her, truly meaning it, “More now that I’m with you.”
“I love you.” Jillian reminded him softly, kissing him passionately.
“I love you.” he reciprocated, “I don’t think I’ve told you this yet, but you look stunning, my love.”
“So do you, fiancé.” Jill ran her hands up and down his arms, smiling giddily up at him.
Though, their moment was cut short by Naveen’s voice booming throughout the room, claiming the attention of the guests and the honored couple as they all turned towards him.
“Hello, everyone! I’m happy to welcome you all here tonight to celebrate the engagement of Ethan and Jillian, to mark the beginning of their life-long commitment to each other and share this milestone with them. I always knew they would be perfect for each other.”
“We all did!” Tobias vociferated, earning laughs from everyone.
“True. And I’m glad Ethan got over his stubbornness, enough to see exactly what was right in front of him, and to realize the truly important things in life.” he pointed out, “And Jill, I applaud, and thank, your patience while waiting for him.”
Jill giggled softly and wrapped her arm around Ethan, snuggling closer to him. While her eyes were trained on Naveen, Ethan’s were completely glued to her, mesmerized by the radiant smile lighting up her face.
“I can’t remember ever meeting two people so right for each other.” Naveen finished with a gentle smile, “And I hope you share a lifetime of happiness and respect for one another.”
Ethan raised his glass to the man in gratitude, swallowing the lump in his throat, and the rest of the people followed his gesture. However, he knew the feeling in his throat wasn’t going away any time soon as he watched his father step up beside Naveen and call attention to the crowd.
“Hello, and to repeat what Naveen already said, thank you for coming and accompanying us tonight in this special occasion. For those who don’t know me, I’m Alan, Ethan’s father. When Naveen asked me if I wanted to say a few words for the couple, I came up empty-handed. I didn’t think there was anything I haven’t already told these two. But it turns out, there is still a few things I want to say to them, especially to my son.”
Ethan straightened his back in attention, but the arm around Jill only tightened and pulled her closer. Before he could continue, Alan was politely interrupted by Jill’s brother, who offered him a glass of champagne, and he thanked the oldest Valentine before continuing with his speech.
“Ethan, I’ve always been proud to be your father. Your principles and accomplishments speak for themselves, and it’s been great watching you find your way through life. You’ve always been an upstanding man, the best son anyone could ask for. But now that you’ve finally found someone to open yourself up to, I’m proud of the man you’ve grown into. Ever since you raved on that very first day about an insufferable intern, a rookie, as you so graciously put, I could see she would be the woman to drive you absolutely crazy, but also the one to hold your heart. And when I actually met her, I knew she was here to stay. Jill is a wonderful woman, and I’m glad you found each other. Watching you grow together, challenge each other and bring out the best in one another is more than what any parent could wish for. It’s a gift to share your happiness today, and I want for both of you only the best life has to offer.” Alan wiped a tear from the corner of his eye and raised his glass, “So, to my son, and the woman he loves, and to their life together.”
By the time he was finished, Jill and Ethan weren’t the only ones fighting to keep their composure. Sienna and Ivy were openly crying and holding each other, while most of the other guests were clearing their throats or dabbing at the corners of their eyes.
“Okay, my turn.” the stunning brunette walked confidently to the front of the crowd, beckoning everyone’s attention, “Good evening, I’m Kate Valentine, Jillian’s sister, and the step-in as her parent figure for the moment being.”
“Oh God…” Jill mumbled nervously under her breath, not knowing what to expect from her sister, but Ethan squeezed her in reassurance, effectively calming her.
“Much like Doctor Banerji and Mr. Ramsey, I just want to say how elated I am for you two. Both of you are very lucky, not only for finding each other, but because you’ve chosen one another, and you’ve decided to continue to do so. You know each other’s flaws and imperfections, and you still decided to learn and to grow side by side. It’s been wonderful seeing your journey together, and I’m sure there’s much more to come. I know that together you can overcome any obstacles life throw your way. You truly deserve each other, and I hope your life together is everything you want and more. Jill, as your sister, I’ve only ever wanted you to be happy, and I’m delighted to see that you’ve found that happiness with Ethan. Ethan, thank you for loving my little sister the way that you do, and I’m sure I speak for all the Valentines when I say that we’re ecstatic to officially welcome you to the family. Cheers!”
The rest of the guests raised their glasses towards the couple, and they smiled in return. Ethan took a couple of steps back to let Jill’s sister wrap her arms around her in a brief hug.
“Thank you, that was really sweet.” Jill admitted.
“Just because I don’t like marriage doesn’t mean that I can’t be happy for you.”
Ethan immediately perked up at her statement, glancing at her curiously, but Katherine simply shrugged and looked away, ignoring his silent question. However, he was brought out of his thoughts by his fiancée, extending her arms at him, her butterscotch eyes shining excitedly.
“Dance with me?”
He didn’t have to be told twice. He placed his empty glass on a nearby table and turned back to her.
Together, they made their way to the makeshift dancefloor, or at least the part of room his fiancée deemed spacious enough to make it their dancefloor. Jill wrapped her arms around his neck as his snaked around her waist, and he guided them softly to the slow beat of the song.
“What even is this music?”
“Bryce picked it.” Jill giggled, “I take it you’re not a fan?”
“We are not letting him pick anything for the actual wedding.” Ethan stated firmly.
“I think it’s cute.”
The older attending wanted to scoff, but as he paid closer attention to the lyrics and the meaning behind them, he couldn’t fault the young surgeon for choosing that song for the occasion.
For the way you changed my plans For being the perfect distraction        For the way you took the idea that I have     Of everything that I wanted to have And made me see there was something missing
For the ending of my first begin          And for the rare and unexpected friend        For the way you're something that I'd never choose                But at the same time, something I don't wanna lose                And never wanna be without ever again
Ethan pulled Jill impossibly closer, until there was no space between them. Of course, the redhead didn’t mind, and instead her fingers started playing with the hair at the nape of his neck, a comforting gesture she had learned over the years that Ethan liked. They were invaded by a wave of emotion that the moment brought. Getting married was a huge decision, they already knew that, but at the same time, it felt right.
My accidental happily ever after       The way you smile and how you comfort me with your laughter  I must admit you were not a part of my book               But now if you open it up and take a look      You're the beginning and the end of every chapter
“You're the best thing I never knew I needed, so now it's so clear I need you here always.” Jill sang softly in his ear as the song came close to the end.
“Jill.” Ethan’s voice turned serious, tinged with a little desperation; desperate for her to know exactly how he was feeling, “Thank you.”
“For what?” she slowed down their movement, now more focused on him than their dance.
“For choosing me.” he said simply, but the intensity of his statement took her breath away, “For choosing me to love and to marry. For not giving up on us even when I was pushing you away.”
“Ethan–”
“I’m serious.” he insisted, “You’ve seen all of me, the good, the bad and the worst, and you still accepted me for who I really am.”
“Because I love you, all that you are.” Jill breathed out, still slightly dazzled by his words.
“But that’s not all.” he leaned down to whisper in her ear, “Alan was right, you’ve made me a better man, and you’ve shown me so much about me and about life in general. With you, I am more than I ever thought possible. I’m not just the doctor everyone else sees.”
“It wasn’t just me. We’ve done that, together.”
“But it was you. It’s always been you, it’ll always be you.” Ethan kissed the top of her head, “Being with you surpasses everything else.”
“It’s not fair.” she sniffed softly, making him realize she had started crying, “I hate that you’re so good with words because now my brain’s all mushy and I don’t know what to say.”
“You know there’s only one thing I need to hear.”
“I love you, Ethan Ramsey.” Jill poured her whole heart into those little words, trying to convey the depth of her feelings in them, “And I can’t wait to be your wife.”
“I can’t wait to be your husband, Jillian Valentine.”

Sunday Six
A/N: I still haven't decided the title for this fic, but I hope it'll come to me in time lol. Enjoy!
“She’s here.”
Ethan froze in understanding. Naveen didn’t have to specify who ‘she’ was for him to know exactly the woman he was referring to. And by Ethan’s expression, it didn’t take Naveen long to understand that she hadn’t been invited to the event. Ethan might’ve already worked on his issues and made his peace with his mother, but that didn’t mean he wanted her around on his– and Jill’s– day.
As if sensing his discomfort, his wife’s eyes searched for him through the crowd, and when they finally found him, she excused herself from the person she was dancing with and made his way towards him. The way Jill strut determinately but elegantly across the crowd, with her white dress flowing freely behind her, was almost enough for Ethan to forget about the matter at hand.
“Hey.” Jillian immediately entwined her hand with his, tugging slightly and prompting him to look down at her, “Is everything okay?”
Ethan debated on what to tell her, before simply settling for the truth. He had learned that anything was better if they faced whatever life threw their way together, and he wasn’t going to hide from her or push her away anymore, or ever again, “Louise is here.” though, instead of the shock he expected written all over her face, there was just a caution and wariness, “You knew?”
“Security detail let me know about five minutes ago.” Jill raised a finger to his lips to stop the endless streams of questions he was sure to throw her way, “I did not invite her, nor would I ever force this upon you or Alan. Though, she’s still your mother. If you want my opinion, I’d say to hear what she has to say; she did come all the way here. But that’s entirely up to you, honey. If you want to know what she has to say and talk to her, she’s right outside the salon. If you don’t, I’ll have security escort her out.” she shrugged nonchalantly, “I’m on your corner, husband. I’ll support whatever you decide.” she reminded him, moving her hand from his lips to caress his cheek.

(I made an edit because I'm extra af 😂 but also the biggest thank you to @jerzwriter for the picture, I'm obsessed with it ❤️. Jill gets along with most of her exes because most weren't serious, just casual dating and sex, but Roderick Bloom is the one asshole she can't stand)

It's Jill's beaming face every time she wins an argument against her husband, or every time she convinces him to do something he doesn't want but she does (like going out to eat when "there's food at home") 😂❤️
Ethan pretends to be annoyed but eventually relents because look at her, she's adorable
Thank you so much for sending me this, amiga ✨💕

Hi! I’m here to ask a fun question!
Out of Ethan and your MC who’s the naked neighbour? Does the other yell at them to put clothes on?
Lmao Alice I love this question so much 😂
My answer is Jill. Not that Ethan doesn't do it, he occasionally lounges around shirtless just in boxers and such, but Jill is the definitive winner. With the way she grew up, she was forced to dress up a lot and look presentable almost at all times, so now at home she simply enjoys doing the exact opposite. Most of the time she'll only wear underwear, or one of Ethan's oversized shirts, or nothing at all. Ethan doesn't complain though 😏

Before they moved in together where did Ethan and Jill usually have sex?
Everywhere and anywhere 😂
No but really. When it's planned, it's at Ethan's place, per Ethan's insistence. Jill doesn't care if her roommates are around or not, if they realize what is happening or not, but the man insists that he has to keep interacting with said roommates at the hospital, so he'd rather avoid that awkwardness. They end up having sex at his place the nights Jill spends there
But my two idiots are in love and horny pretty much all the time, so quickies can happen anywhere. At her place, at work, in Ethan's car when he's dropping her off, etc etc. Ethan pretends to be embarrassed but he also does nothing to stop those from happening, so no one exactly believes him

How does Ethan respond to this:
Is it hot in here or is it just you?
What about your MC.
Jill to Ethan:
"Is it hot in here or is it just you?"
"That was ridiculously cliché from you, Rookie. I would've thought you had better."
"Are you complaining?"
"No."
Ethan to Jill:
"Is it hot in here or is it just you?"
"You know it's me. But just out of curiosity, who put you up to this, Bryce or Tobias?"
"Why on Earth would they put me up to complementing you?"
"Tobias it is, then."
