The Modern Marketing Tactics of Wildflower Cases
Wildflower Cases started out of a chance encounter with Miley Cyrus. Michelle Carlson and her two daughters fatefully met the icon at a restaurant and from that moment forward, social media was the facilitating factor to their success. Miley tweeted a picture thanking the family for giving her and her friends cases, and overnight Wildflower was born. Wildflower Cases is now a global brand with outlets in Japan, Australia, Dubai, Europe and Singapore! Wildflower releases new cases almost constantly, and according to their about page, by flooding the market with a myriad of designs “Wildflower is now one of the fastest growing millennial iPhone fashion accessories and social media brands.” The Los Angeles natives have designed hundreds of cases, many of witch in collaboration with social media influencers. Their phone cases are their promotion. Every mirror selfie, Snap Chat, or Instagram story that features a Wildflower case serves as a testament to their span of influence.  The company’s Instagram is indicative of their audience: young, trendy, showstoppers. The vast majority of their posts are of customers or influencers promoting their cases. By using recognizable faces (influencers) alongside actual customers, Wildflower is able to boost their own ethos and credibility as a brand.
It seems as though Wildflower has a representative in every co-culture of fashion enthusiasts on the internet; mall goth @sydn4sty, fitness @missremiashten, sophistcastion @chloelloyd, and street-wear @suedebrooks. In every corner of the internet a Wildflower case can be found. Sydney and Devon Carlson themselves can always been seen with the cases. The sisters have become known faces in the fashion hubs of Los Angeles and New York. Devon has done campaigns with Juicy Couture, Free People, and is a “dream girl” for Réalisation Par. Sydney has consistently worked hand-in-hand with the up-and-coming, Australian brand, I.AM.GIA. Their distinct styles have been noticed by many stars, notably supermodel Bella Hadid, who has also sported a Wildflower case or two, a true testament to their influential style.
With 6.6 million Instagram followers Emma Chamberlain was able to create a case with the Carlson sisters. Her 90’s inspired design has been spotted in the hands of fellow you-tube stars: Ethan and Grayson Dolan, who have a combined following of 18 million. By partnering with fellow creators, Wildflower is able to extend their audience to those of their collaborators, and ripple outward beyond their original scope. Wildflower also collaborates with other companies. They have released two cases with Urban Outfitters, a variation of their popular cherries case with Dolls Kill, LF stores have their own, even the newest “it-girl” haven Réalisation Par has its own tiger print case. Each store’s unique vibe is matched in their case. By collaborating beyond their market, Wildflower’s reach extends more and more every day.
Tumblr media
Wildflower’s recent success cannot be ignored. Their representation isn’t just confined to the internet, looking around our classroom I can see many Wildflower designs; LFxWildflower, cheetah print, plaid and even their latest release: the angels case. They have been able to penetrate a market that was previously glanced over. Their cases are addictive, and my bias comes into play when I admit to having four of their cases. Since buying my first wildflower case in 2017 I have convinced 6 of my closest friends to buy from them, and beyond my direct reach they have also turned more people onto the trendy cases.
Wildflower does not put themselves on a pedestal. They are constantly reaching out to fans and customers via twitter and Instagram. They reply to every Instagram-story mention with a well-thought-out emoji. Although it doesn’t seem like much, their personal touches make supporting their mildly expensive cases a little easier. Michelle has responded to every order I’ve placed thanking me for making the Wildflower family a little bigger.
This young brand is pioneering modern marketing. By making their cases easily accessible through in-post links Wildflower Cases promotes themselves through others. Beyond their own social media accounts, they further penetrate markets with collaborations and influencers. I believe their success is completely deserved, but if I was to recommend one thing, it would be to feature more of us, the customers. They already show a lot of customers on their story highlights, but the influencer to customer ratio is off-putting. “Real people” may not be as aesthetically pleasing, but it would be able to further boost the brands ethos, and encourage a more accepting culture surrounding the brand.
