Getting Naked with the Locals!

The best thing about living abroad is fully experiencing the day-to-day living in a foreign city.  You don’t just dip your toe in another culture, you immerse yourself. Living abroad is much less romantic than traveling abroad. You develop a routine, run errands, pay bills and (this week) try to find medicine in a foreign language after struggling to fill out the new patient forms at the huisarts (family doctor) when they ask for uw identiteitsbewijs (your ID), uw verzekeringspas (your insurance card) and de verwijsbrief / het patiëntenbericht van de (huis)arts of specialist (your referral).

In addition to the mundane, a wonderful part of the experience is getting to know new people and fostering friendships with others who have had completely different life experiences from your own. It makes you a more open-minded individual.  These friends will introduce you to opportunities to see things you may not otherwise see, and do fun and unique things that you can’t do in your home country. Like getting naked with the locals!

Four new friends recently invited me for a spa day at a wonderful location in the Amsterdam Bos (forest).  I quickly realized this was not going to be your typical American girls’ day out.  We arrived at this beautiful facility and were handed robes, towels and slippers; a good start.  However, there was no easing into the experience as the dressing rooms were not separate for men and women.  After struggling to operate the lockers, I shed all my clothes and inhibitions and was feeling quite confident as lightening did not strike and no one pointed and laughed.  I decided after the initial shock and awe that this was going to be one of those wonderful local enriching experiences that I would miss one day.  

The immersion started in a whirlpool bath followed by a swim in a pool, all with both men and women.  The pool ran the length of the facility and was accessible to the outside. The experience of swimming naked outdoors on a cold winter day feeling cold on your face and the warmth on your body was exhilarating and completely relaxing all at once.  The day continued with an outdoor whirlpool, sauna, a wonderful massage, an aroma bath, and more whirlpools and swimming.  I learned that the robe was for the restaurant and relaxation area, the towel was for the sauna, and the slippers were allowed just about everywhere.  As the day progressed, I was completely comfortable and truly enjoying this new experience.

What I have learned is that such experiences are completely common for the Dutch who grow up going to the saunas and spas with their families and continue the practice of going with groups of friends or colleagues. There are not the typical American sensibilities to the perfect body type or associating nudity with sexuality.   Being in an unfamiliar environment can be scary, uncomfortable, and even confusing (am I supposed to be doing this??)  But I am so glad that I experienced this.  That night I enjoyed the best sleep of my life.  Gezellig!
