I think you might be the first person I've seen who's simply said they don't jive with XY due to canon events. I've seen too many fanon takes on XY and how misunderstood he was which tend to completely ignore the mass killings of innocent people or even what he did to Song Lan or Xingchen.

I find Modern AUs very hard to read because WWX's and LWJ's characters always feel a little skewed but weirdly enough I can read about XY because I simply cannot whitewash his canon actions.

There's also the take the XY and WWX are similar people that I've never completely understood. Because XY is an angry character. He's angry at the world, at the people, and enjoys causing harm, even to those who would try to help him. and the fanon says WWX would be the same if he kept living on the streets and I don't see it. I feel like at his most violent he would be like a Jason Todd character. Someone who would murder and be a vigilante.

Bt the kicker is the opposite actually. The fandom says that WWX would turn out like XY because these two characters are so alike but I don't see the reverse happening. XY would have never born Madam Yu's abuse or Fangmain's half-hearted support or JC's love/hate. He'd probably murder Jiangli himself considering Xingchen in canon. He also would not save the Wens or go that far.

WWX is a hero. He is good. and I don't see how the fandom substitutes him so easily for a serial killer who did unspeakable acts of cruelty and death for his own amusement.

People compare WWX to XY??

*takes deep breath* oookay.

So I watch a lot of true crime documentaries. And, I happen to have studied in psychology in college. (not criminal psychology, mind, but still). A bad background doesn't necessarily make a killer. It can be a factor, but even people raised in perfectly normal households tend to become s*rial k*llers.

In the case of XY, his actions are so overthetop, his reaction to insanely vindictive, that you have to assume that something beyond his background drove him. Living on the street doesn't make children killers. It can be a factor, you can't lay blame on the circumstances alone otherwise we'd have billions of people just murdering others.

Remember, this guy broke XXC's spirit. His soul was shattered. Not a single character in MDZS is as twisted as he is.

Comparing XY to WWX means people aren't looking beyond the surface. Arguably, WWX's background is also bad. He is jaded in many ways and it shows in how ruthless he can be when provoked. But from the very beginning, we see his character's capacity for kindness and compassion.

A simple example: when JC threatens wwx with dogs during that first night at the Lotus Pier. WWX's response is to run away, not complain about JC to his parents. When they're forced to explain themselves, WWX doesn't blame JC. That is a nine year old child, chased out of a home he has just been offered after living for years on the street, threatened by a thing he most fears, and he acts compassionately.

Street children are very smart. They're sharper, wilder, and more ruthlessly practical than children raised in homes. WWX, when he entered Lotus Pier, wasn't like that. He lived for years on the street and forgot all of that when he was safe.

XY chose to do everything he did. He made a conscious choice to kill ruthlessly, to torment a good man, kill harmless priests/monks (of all things), trick someone and make them kill their best friend.

This level of maliciousness... it doesn't just pop up due to bad circumstances. There's a mental/character component you must factor in. I'm not saying XY didn't suffer, I'm saying that his circumstances aren't an excuse.

In character, WWX and XY are night and day. They may have cunning and playful personalities, both XY doesn't have the kindness and compassion that's the very essence of WWX's character.

I keep saying this: WWX very first instinct is to protect. He leans very naturally towards compassion. It comes up again and again and again in the series. He goes through horrible shit as a child and as an adult but till the very end, he isn't resentful or hateful.

There is absolutely NO WAY WWX being left on the streets would turn him into something similar to XY.

Now, if XY was raised in a more nurturing environment, would he be better? Likely, yes. Could he still snap and murder people for kicks? Likely, yes.

Can I imagine WWX ever acting like XY? No. This guy survived experimental surgery, childhood abuse, torture, being tossed into hell on earth, war, betrayal, another stint in hell on earth, mental torment, death, and resurrection. And his response to all of that BS was to shrug, say whatever, marry the prettiest cultivator of their generation, and spend time teaching kids.

I have absolutely nothing against people who like XY and believe he can be saved. I believe he can be.

But let's not fool ourselves into believing he and WWX are alike or would react similarly to the same triggers.
