#explanation for my non greek pals: tsiknopempti comes from combining the words tsikna + pempti#pempti means Thursday and tsikna means the smoke & scent coming off of well-grilled meat. There's no single word for it in english iirc#so tsiknopempti is the last day when we can eat meat before lent starts (greek orthodox christian tradition)#(tho idk if other orthodox cultures have a similar thing.)#so we grill a lot of different kinds of meat to 'indulge in before lent' even if the average citizen only actually practices lent the week-#-before easter lol (me included oops)#it's kind of a celebration before the carnival too and it kind of signals the end of winter and the coming of spring#it's also kind ot a joke because unironically the entire city air gets a hit hazy bc of all the grill smoke. esp towards sundown#unironically EVERYWHERE smells like it lmao#although most of us in the city just order souvlaki & stuff from souvlaki restaurants instead of grilling#BUT my mum is grilling tonight ehe.#greek stuff
