What struck you as car-salesman-y? That is a new one. I’m 99.9% I’m an 8 ENTJ but I did read the FAQ because it says to, and you said give specifics rather than use general abstractions, so I gave you some. I also ran out of space on goal orientation type of stuff. I actually somewhat share your distaste for Ti behavior, I just lacked the bandwidth to give you all of that information. Did you consider ENTJ and rule it out or were you pretty sure of ETP?
My only remote confusion in typing in general is Ni vs Si and “could I be an ESTJ instead of an ENTJ” and by following your FAQ and being forced to give you some measure of specifics, you seem to have arrived at Se-Ni which I agree with. I wasn’t trying to clarify Te or Ti because I know that. Anyway, I’m 99.9% sure of 8, but if you were to believe that 3 is true, anyway, would you have an opinion about wing? I have 3 second in tritype but to think I’m a 3 with wing to 2 or 4 is discomfiting.
Last bit from the Anon here... not trying to disagree with you. The thing is, I gave you a few thousand characters after reading the instructions, and you got the top two in the tritype (8 and 3) and you got Se-Ni right, which is a challenge (because Ni aux vs Si aux is the hardest aux to see in a third person imo) so that is “good.” It’s just funny to me that your, I don’t want to say Ti bashing, is my favorite content. Anyway if I’m an 8, the wing is obvious, yes? If 3 then which one? ---------------------------
Hi anon,
I do not know how to break it to you but you are doing like, half of things I make fun of Ti for in the asks you have sent (most notably saying you're not trying to disagree while literally disagreeing, and ripping into people for literally no reason when younger/more immature).
Typically, once I’ve typed someone, unless considerable new information has come up, or I genuinely misinterpreted something, I don’t retype, and I especially do not do it if I get a response to the effect of “but I was expecting something different! Are you sure?”
This isn’t borne out of any desire to paint myself as some kind of authority. In fact it’s the opposite. I have zero authority. I invite you to say “ok cool but you don’t know me like I know me” because that is absolutely correct. My response to someone disagreeing is always that I completely respect not changing your self-assessment because someone on the internet who does not know you personally thought differently than you did, and I think I’ve provided all I can as that someone on the internet.
With all that said, whenever someone sends me an ask to the effect of “I think I know what type I am” I always automatically say to myself “okay what type do I think they are...and what type do I think they think they are.”
For your enneagram it was maybe 67% chance of you being a 3, 33% chance of you being an 8, and 100% chance that you think you’re an 8. But I absolutely thought not only that you were an ESTP, but also that you thought you were an ExTP.
I just do not see much Te in this ask. “Goal-oriented” is a trait many people have and can learn (I mean, job interviews ask where you see yourself in 5 years); mostly needing to relate to people with humor happens across the board but I’ve found a lot of high Te users tend to err more on being overly serious and formal whereas people with low Fe especially tend to lean on humor; but really the part that made me say “oh this sounds like healthy Ti in an adult” was the part about doing all of the research, analysis, and reflection yourself instead of delegating some of the tasks and/or consulting experts, which is how I’d expect the typical Te dom to approach it.
To answer the final question: if you are an 8, you would be an 8w7 - there’s not really the check on confrontation a 9 would provide and there is a lot of intellectual curiosity that looks like 7. If you’re a 3, it would be 3w4; there’s really nothing that looks like 2 here and there’s a general sense of becoming valuable through being unique and distinctive. I would add that wings are pretty minor in the scheme of things, and plenty of people (including a whole lot of ExTJs and ExTPs) have a 3 core with the obligatory 2 or 4 wing and do not relate at all to 2 or 4 on their own so if that was a significant factor in you determining it wasn't your core it could be worth revisiting.

When you say, 'in management consulting, the types I work with most are ENTJ, ESTJ, ENTP, INTJ, ESFJ', are you referring to fellow consultants, clients or both? If both, do you have any indication of how this breaks down across fellow consultants and clients?
I’m referring to fellow consultants, add ESFPs and ESTPs to that mix. For consultants, I’d group them by consulting function:
Strategy Consulting
More Ni-Se/Se-Ni - Pure strategy consulting requires navigating ambiguity with minimal data, weighing all options, narrowing the strongest ones, creating the “best” solution to achieve future goals, executing against the plan, and measuring success. MBTI types who are weak at narrowing down options (high Ne) generally struggle with this.
More high Te - The ability to bring order to chaos, to quantify, to pick and choose options (versus exploring every possibility and checking beneath every nook and cranny), and to simplify (versus overcomplicating everything) processes and metrics is crucial for strategy consulting because time and money are limited and business problems are usually dire.
NJs (ENTJ, INTJ, ENFJ, INFJ)
SPs (ESFP, ESTP)
Risk and Compliance Consulting
More Si-Ne/Ne-Si
SJs (ESTJ, ISTJ, ESFJ, ISFJ)
NPs (ENTP, INTP) - This may seem odd but it’s not, high Ne is very astute at hacking systems and finding creative ways to break the rules which leads them to be skilled consultants at recommending solutions and defenses to clients.
Human Capital (HC) / Human Resources Consulting
More feelers than thinkers - HC consulting requires the ability to interact with companies on an employee level; the people, their feelings, their happiness, their motivations, their career goals, etc. and create systems and solutions that incentivize high performance, retention, recruiting, and happiness. The ability, skill, and willingness to focus more on people versus logic systems trends towards feelers.
More FJs than FPs
Technology Consulting
More thinkers than feelers
More introverts than extraverts
IxTJs, IxTPs, ExTPs
Federal Consulting
More sensors than intuitives
SJs (ESTJ, ISTJ, ESFJ, ISFJ)SPs (ESFP, ISFP, ISTP)
Financial Services Consulting
More thinkers than feelers
More extraverts than introverts
ExTJs, ExTPs, ISTPs
Tax Consulting
More judgers than perceivers
More introverts than extraverts
IxTJs, xxFJs
For clients, I’d group them by industry. See here: MBTI trends by industry
