Whumpees! Calling! Out! For! A ! Parent!!!!
What's the situation? Do they wake up from a nightmare disoriented and confused, enough so that it takes them a second they forget they aren't with their parents and call out to the first person they see, only to be embarrassed a moment later when they realize? Are they so delirious they actually think their dad is there with them when it's really just an unrelated caretaker who's heart is breaking for them? Are they so scared, sick, or in pain that they just really really want their mom and don't care if that's impossible right now?

Imagine your whumpee is kidnapped and being kept in Whumper's house, maybe there are other whumpees too, maybe not, but one thing is for certain: if they don't escape, they are going to suffer and then they will be killed. No one is coming to save them, and there are no alternatives to how this will end unless they can find a way to escape.
After weeks of torture and fear, Whumpee finally manages to escape. Maybe they knock Whumper out, maybe they break their hand to pry out of their cuffs or zip ties, maybe they just get lucky because whumper made a mistake. But they get out, and they limp away as quickly as they can, through the woods, far into a rural community where they eventually find Caretaker. They cry into Caretaker's arms and explain what happened while Caretaker holds Whumpee and promises everything will be okay, they can stay with them for a while until they heal and can get them home.
Caretaker brings Whumpee into their house, gets them comfortable, and Whumpee eventually falls asleep with the knowledge that they're finally safe and they can rest. They wake that night to someone entering their room—Caretaker, with a tray of food—and just as Whumpee's vision clears, a second person comes in behind Caretaker. Whumper is Caretaker's family/friend/roommate/romantic partner.
Whumpee's heart leaps into their throat and they start freaking out. Caretaker hurries to shush them, petting their hair, cradling their head, and whispers, "Don't worry, Whumpee. You're going to be okay. Whumper and I will make sure you stay safe with us this time."
