Lots of interesting stuff in this article, not so much about the “growing food” part as the community connection and the comment about the city not really knowing how to work with this kind of group.

...Thiruvengadam points to a hand-painted wooden sign (pictured above) that Ventura’s grandfather, a Salvadoran immigrant, had given him. It reads, in English and Spanish, “The only thing we all have in common is the earth.”

That message reflects one of Thiruvengadam’s core goals in founding Eastie Farm four years ago—using food as a vehicle for bringing together neighbors who might not otherwise know one another to hang out, do something productive, and build community resilience in a city vulnerable to sea level rise and coastal flooding. Thiruvengadam, who grew up in southern India outside of Chennai, says he hopes that people will get to know each other so well through Eastie that they’ll give each other a hand in times of emergency.

Eastie Farm’s community-building approach is common among urban farms, but its emphasis on climate resilience and environmental education is unique. “Most have gone the social route, worrying about people not having enough food, or people of color or lower-income people not getting healthy food,” Thiruvengadam told Civil Eats. “Unfortunately, it’s almost seen [by other urban farms] as a luxury worrying about the environment, a concern for tomorrow.”

But Thiruvengadam sees the problem of climate change today. Extreme weather events, like the 2018 spate of “nor-easters” that hit East Boston, are causing more frequent flooding. Research shows that neighborhoods with strong social cohesion fare better during emergencies. During Superstorm Sandy, for example, neighbor-to-neighbor connections were critical for getting aid to elderly and disabled people.

The farm’s wild appearance reflects Thiruvengadam’s bent toward permaculture—that is, designing or restoring landscapes in harmony with nature—as well as his philosophy of collective ownership of the land. “I had the instinct to let people do what they wanted,” he said. Rather than divvy up the land into individual plots, he wanted to create a space where anyone who wanted to could come in and farm.

A core volunteer, Salvador Cartagena, is the son of Salvadoran immigrants who grew up in East Boston and works as an electrical engineer. He calls Eastie “a place to hang out and interact with the neighbors and learn about resilience.”

Eastie Farm is now a nonprofit organization that’s poised for big expansion. In a huge victory for the grassroots initiative, the city recently transferred ownership of the lot to the organization and granted it $140,000 to upgrade the lot and cultivate two additional parcels in East Boston that will increase the organization’s overall land area four-fold. Now the group can renovate the farm, by efforts including building permanent beds, bringing in a water line, and creating a sitting area in the front.

One way they secured their neighbors’ support, while also meeting the farm’s water needs, was by offering to set up rain barrels that would connect to the neighbors’ downspouts and divert water that in the past had flooded their lots during downpours. “If we weren’t collecting, their foundations would be getting damaged,” claims Thiruvengadam.

Each year the group managed to renew its lease with the city, but there were a lot of uphill battles that eventually convinced Thiruvengadam to leave his job in the IT sector to focus on the farm. The neighborhood association was also pressing the group for its long-term plan. Eastie Farm had to vie for ownership of the lot with two developers who wanted to build luxury condominiums. The group formed a nonprofit, drafted a formal plan, and campaigned hard to win the neighborhood’s trust. And, in the end, they prevailed.

Thiruvengadam also finds that the city isn’t set up to support community efforts like Eastie, because it’s more accustomed to working with large developers. “It seems like you’re creating your own new world to do this work,” he says.

How to Manage the Energy Crisis - Alternative Energy and Energy Conservation

The two adult crises [ie. other than the economy] ailing the burrow today are the slab crisis and the energy crisis. There is a serious shortage of food among the producers/exporting nation and as regular there is and testament always be a shortage of energy. I am not touching themes of the volatile present day economics. In this scoop I lack to dialogue about the ever increasing guts needs and the procedure we tins conserve energy, or even better, discovery alternate sources.

We are incessantly depending on energy to fuel our basic needs in our day-to-day lives. The majority of the determination move is for either electricity or fossil fuels. 2. Find alternate sources.

There are basically 3 different conventional sources of electricity -

1. Hydro-electric power: as we all know, this is generated by water injected at high weight that drives turbines which are coupled to generators. The high importance is achieved by storing water in dams/reservoirs. This is the most popular provision of power generation. There are many hydro projects that are very successful, Itaipu dam, that's located between Brazil and Paraguay is a good e.g,.

2. Thermal power: this is generated by burning coal. I just can't dig this fact. The heat determination thus produced is used to heat water, thereby producing steam to ambition turbines. Thermal power stations are becoming unpopular as the wastage is pretty high.

3. Nuclear power: the concept is similar to thermal power except that nuclear gas is used to heat water instead of coal. Nuclear might is supposedly 'clean fuel'. Lots of precautions have to be taken to ensure there is no leakage of radiation. [remember Chernobyl?]

1. Solar energy: there should be lots more solar acreage system up like the one in Spain. Here arrays of mirrors are aligned with the sun to reflect and distillation sunlight on to the summit of a tower. There is a differential hill and the mirrors align with the sun throughout the day. There are a series of pipes that circulate water in and out of the point of concentration. Thus the heated water is converted to steam and used to whip electricity. A very small land domain is used to system up these arrays of mirrors. The investment is one time and the returns are high. The electricity thus generated is enough to power an entire city..! Each district is to become an export hub, she says. Budget to provide ₹27,300 crore for development and promotion of industry and commerce in 2021

In order to provide quality education to students of deprived sections, it is proposed to start a degree level full-fledged online education programme.

Under the Study in India programme, an INDSAT exam is proposed to be held in Asian and African countries. A National Police University and National Forensic Science University are proposed.

There is a shortage of qualified medical doctors. For this, it is proposed to attach a medical college to existing district hospitals under PPP mode.

The Minister moves on to wellness, water and sanitation.

Fit India movement is a vital part of the fight against non-communicable diseases.

The Minister also proposes to expand Jan Aushadhi Kendra.

Railways to launch Kisan Rail for cold storage

The Indian Railways will set up Kisan Rail for cold storage of perishable goods through the PPP model. Krishi UDAN will be launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on international and national routes.

For the horticulture sector, with its current produce of 311 million metric tonnes exceeds the production of foodgrains. For better marketing and exports we will support States which support ‘one product, one district’.

Integrated farming systems in rain-fed areas will be established.

Youth and fishery extension work to be enabled by rural youth as Sagar Mitras, 500 fish farmer producing organisations to be set up.

Financing on negotiable warehousing receipts has already crossed ₹6,000 crore.

Agricultural credit target has been set at ₹15 lakh crore. All eligible beneficaries of PM Kisan will be covered under Kisan Credit Card scheme.

MNREGA will be dovetailed to create fodder farms.

By 2022-23, she proposes raising fish production to 200 lakh tonnes.

58 lakh SHGs have been mobilised to alleviate poverty.

The fund allocation for all these steps: for the sector comprising agriculture, allied activities – ₹2.83 lakh crore.

Govt committed to doubling farm income by 2022

The government is committed to doubling farm income by 2022.

The first thing is to encourage State governments to implement model laws passed by the central government — Model Agri Land Leasing Act, 2016, APMC, 2017 and Contract Farming, 2018.

The second action point is comprehensive measures for 100 water-stressed districts.

The third action point is to provide 20 lakh farmers with stand-alone solar pumps. We shall also help another 15 lakh farmers to solarise their farms.

The fourth is to encourage balanced use of all kinds of fertilisers. This is to change the current incentive regimes, she says.

She then quotes the Aathichudi by Auvaiyar. Bhoomi Thiruthi Unn (Take care of your land first).

The next is a proposed village storage scheme run by self-help groups. Women SHGs can get assistance from NABARD or Mudra.

The implementation of schemes and programmes that directly benefited the poor and the disadvantaged was sped up and scaled up, says the Finance Minister. She lists Ayushman Bharat, UPI, affordable housing through PMAY etc. The milestones achieved are unprecedented, globally recognised, she says.

We have moved on from a growth rate of just over 4% to around 7% in 2014-19.

Inflation was 9% in the last two decades, she says. We are now the fifth largest economy in the world, says Nirmala Sitharaman.

Three prominent themes in the Budget are — aspirational India, economic development for all, a caring society that is both humane and compassionate.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman rises to lay on the table the report of the 15th Finance Commission.

Ms. Sitharaman then presents a statement of estimated receipts and expenditure.

She then rises to present the Union Budget 2020-21. “In May 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a massive mandate to form the government again. People of India have unequivocally given their janaadesh for not just political stability, but have also reposed their faith in our economic policy. Let our businesses be innovative, healthy and solvent with use of technology.

Ms. Sitharaman presents a picture of “vibrant India” with what she calls the “gentle breeze of technology” to uplift minorities.

The Minister calls GST as historic and mourns the passing of Arun Jaitley, whom she calls the “architect of GST”. GST has integrated the country economically, she says, and has resulted in the formalisation of the economy. The turnaroud time for trucks has reduced by 20%. Inspector Raj has vanished, she says.

The average family has saved 4% of its monthly spending on account of reduced GST rates. We have added 60 lakh new taxpayers, she says.

The economic survey 2019-20 urged the government to integrate ‘Make in India’ with ‘Assemble in India’ to create 4 crore jobs by 2025. This in turn will create jobs for the youth, the survey said.

The Congress expressed hope that the Union Budget 2020 would provide relief to the salaried class through tax cuts and invest in rural India besides providing a healing touch to the common man and industry facing “hardship” since demonetisation.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the last budget led to crashing consumption levels, soaring unemployment and falling GDP.

“Budget 2019= Consumption crashed, Unemployment soared, Farm distress surged, Incomes declined, Investments slumped, Public spending fell, GDP nose dived!,” Mr. Surjewala tweeted.

“Yet, Modiji gave Corporate Tax Cuts of ₹1,45,000 crore. Let Budget 2020 give tax cuts to Salaried Class and invest in Rural India,” he said.

Ahead of Budget, Sensex slumps over 200 pts, Nifty tests 11,900

Market benchmark Sensex slumped over 200 points in opening session on Saturday ahead of the release of the Union Budget.

After shedding 279 points in early trade, the 30-share BSE index was trading 124.96 points or 0.31% lower at 40,598.53, and the broader NSE slipped 23.10 points, or 0.19%, to 11,939.

In the previous session, Sensex settled 190.33 points, or 0.47%, lower at 40,723.49, after the Economic Survey suggested relaxing fiscal deficit target to boost growth from a decade low.

Likewise, the broader NSE Nifty shed 73.70 points, or 0.61%, to finish at 11,962.10.

‘Bahi-khata’ makes a comback in this years’ budget presentation

Like last year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman carried the 2020 Union Budget documents in a red bag, reminiscence of the traditional bahi-khata.

Earlier, Finance Ministers in different governments used to carry a briefcase to present budget, which was considered as a tradition of colonial past.

Ms. Sitharaman is presenting the full Budget for 2020-21. She is carrying the Budget documents in a red silk bag with national emblem.

During the Atal Behari Vajpayee government, the then Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha broke the one colonial tradition of budget presentation at 5 p.m. Since then all governments have been presenting the budget at 11 a.m.

Better to focus on growth than on fiscal deficit in current situation: CEA

Ahead of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s second Budget, Chief Economic Adviser K.V. Subramanian suggested the government should focus on growth rather than being rigid on fiscal deficit in times of slowing economy.

The government can look at option of increasing market borrowing to fund higher expenditure by the government in 2020-21, he said adding that if need be, the government can resort to higher market borrowing this fiscal.

“So, we’ve delineated the overall stance that needs to be taken in times like this. India has been in such situations earlier as well. There’s always a delicate balance between spurring growth and keeping the fiscal (situation) in order,” Mr. Subramanian told PTI in an interaction.

“The view that we have articulated is that it’s better at this point to lean on growth. When you look at the debt-to-GDP ratio, the denominator is the GDP, and our analysis has also shown that when GDP growth increases, the debt-to-GDP ratio falls as well,” he said.

It is time to focus on growth and, therefore, cutting expenditure is not an option, probably because at a time like this, growth needs to be taken care of, he added.

Fiscal deficit hits 132% of Budget Estimate till December

The government’s fiscal deficit touched 132.4 per cent of the full-year target at December-end mainly due to slower pace of revenue collections, official data showed on Friday.

In actual terms, the fiscal deficit or gap between expenditure and revenue was Rs 9,31,725 crore, the data released by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) showed.

The government aims to restrict the gap at 3.3 per cent of the GDP or Rs 7,03,760 crore in the year ending March 2020.

Whatever the Chatter, Corn Keeps Growing

As students of value investing, we’ve all read about numerous businesses that Warren Buffett has invested in the last fifty years.

A number of these names regularly appear in Buffett’s annual letters. Especially the ones which he continues to hold – Coca-Cola, See’s Candy, Nebraska Furniture Mart, GEICO, etc. Buffett never gets tired explaining why these companies are great businesses to own.

Each of his investment is an instructive story with valuable lessons to learn. But whenever asked about his best investment, he’s quick to point out that it wasn’t a stock. He says –

Of all the investments I ever made, buying Ben’s book (The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham) was the best (except for my purchase of two marriage licenses).

That’s the beauty of Buffett’s investment mind.

I learned from him that the activity of investing isn’t limited to money and stocks. The principles of value investing are universal and applicable to everything including self-education, relationships, and life in general.

Benjamin Graham, Buffett’s guru, must have thought deeply before framing the golden words: Price is what you pay; value is what you get.

My biggest challenge while getting started as a value investor was to wrap my head around the idea of value. How should an investor think about the value of a business? Or for that matter, the value of any asset?

For centuries, in many Indian societies, donation of a cow (Go-Daan) was considered the highest form of charity. A healthy fertile cow is nothing less than a small business in itself.

Go means cow and Daan mean donation. The owner of the cow can consume its milk and even sell the extra milk to earn a living. The cow’s offsprings add further value. A male calf grows up and helps the villager in plowing his farms. A grown-up female calf becomes an additional source of milk. In Indian villages, dried up cow dung is still the most prevalent source of fire-fuel.

Growing up in a Hindu tradition, for a long time I believed that Go-daan was just a sacred act. But now I understand that although it might have turned into a ritual, it probably didn’t start as a mere religious practice. Donation of a cow is more than a sacred act.

Give a man a fish, goes the adage, and you feed him for a day; teach him fishing and you feed him for life. Go-daan is akin to teaching fishing.

The receiver of the gift is getting something which is capable of producing an increasing stream of future cash flows. A cow’s real value lies in what it can produce for its owner over its lifetime.

So it makes more sense to think about the value of an asset as a product of its ability to generate future earnings. Which means intelligent investing is largely an act of ascertaining the availability of future cash flows in a business. If you can’t do that with a reasonable degree of confidence, then it’s just speculation.

In Warren Buffett’s words:

We first have to decide whether we can sensibly estimate an earnings range for five years out or more. If the answer is yes, we will buy the stock (or business) if it sells at a reasonable price in relation to the bottom boundary of our estimate. If, however, we lack the ability to estimate future earnings — which is usually the case — we simply move on to other prospects.

In March 2014 Warren Buffett wrote an essay for the Fortune titled – What you can learn from my real estate investments. The article has timeless lessons about how the mind of a successful value investor works. The account of Buffett’s real estate investment is the proof of what Charlie Munger often repeats – All intelligent investing is value investing.

In 1986 Warren Buffett bought a 400-acre farmland near his home in Omaha. True to his ethos of purchasing only an income producing asset, Buffett didn’t make this investment in the hope of flipping it over to someone else. He writes:

It cost me $280,000, considerably less than what a failed bank had lent against the farm a few years earlier. I knew nothing about operating a farm. But I have a son who loves farming, and I learned from him both how many bushels of corn and soybeans the farm would produce and what the operating expenses would be. From these estimates, I calculated the normalized return from the farm to then be about 10%. I also thought it was likely that productivity would improve over time and that crop prices would move higher as well. Both expectations proved out.

More than 30 years later, he still owns that farmland and its earnings have more than tripled. If you were to only look at the price of the farm, which has grown five times since then, it would seem like a mediocre investment. One could argue that had Buffett invested the same money in an empty lot in the middle of a town, maybe it would have appreciated by ten times or even more. But that’s an argument coming from a speculator’s mind.

What if the land price stayed flat for all these years? What if it declined like it had happened in the early 1980s, just before Buffett bought the land? The future price of the land didn’t matter. What mattered was its earning potential and the price Buffett agreed to pay with respect to its earnings.

Do you see the thought process behind the farmland investment? There was no expectation of a future 100 bagger. On the contrary, the expectation was very conservative – merely 10 percent return on capital.

There was no intention of flipping the asset for a quick profit. Any such intentions had a higher probability of backfiring.

If “investors” frenetically bought and sold farmland to one another, neither the yields nor the prices of their crops would be increased. The only consequence of such behavior would be decreases in the overall earnings realized by the farm-owning population because of the substantial costs it would incur as it sought advice and switched properties.

In 1991, Buffett made another real estate investment. This time in the city. Like the farm, this was another situation of panicked sellers giving away cash-generating assets for cheap.

Here, too, the analysis was simple. As had been the case with the farm, the unleveraged current yield from the property was about 10%. But the property had been undermanaged by the RTC, and its income would increase when several vacant stores were leased. Even more important, the largest tenant — who occupied around 20% of the project’s space — was paying rent of about $5 per foot, whereas other tenants averaged $70. The expiration of this bargain lease in nine years was certain to provide a major boost to earnings. The property’s location was also superb: NYU wasn’t going anywhere.

Notice again, all of Buffett’s focus was on evaluating the degree of certainty of future cash flows. Increase in the market price is a byproduct of the quality of earnings that asset produces. It’s a cherry on the cake. However, buying the cake for the cherry is not value investing.

I keep reminding myself that there’s nothing wrong with speculation. But it’s a game I don’t want to play. No value investor would.

Games are won by players who focus on the playing field, writes Buffett, “not by those whose eyes are glued to the scoreboard.” Speculation is a game of betting on the scoreboard and predicting the mood-swings of other scoreboard watchers without bothering to look at the playing field.

I’ll leave you with what Buffett wrote In his 2013 letter to investors:

My two purchases were made in 1986 and 1993. What the economy, interest rates, or the stock market might do in the years immediately following — 1987 and 1994 — was of no importance to me in determining the success of those investments. I can’t remember what the headlines or pundits were saying at the time. Whatever the chatter, corn would keep growing in Nebraska and students would flock to NYU.

My truck was hit by a car while parked in valet parking. The valet company was not driving the other car, it was a lady who tried to get around my truck because she did not want to use the valet.
