Unexpected Twists & Turns

Remember when you were in preschool or kindergarten and the teacher asked you, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” My angelic response was, “A veterinarian,” because I loved animals so much. Then I learned about ringworm and other types of diseases animals can get, and quickly I was like, “NOPE!” I also quickly realized I wouldn’t have the heart to put down any sort of animal, even if it was to put them out of their misery.  

The point is that you don’t always have to get it right from the get go. Some people do and some people don’t know what they want to do for the rest of their life. You don’t have to have your career set from the time you learn your first word.

 I am now working to be a well-rounded fashion stylist. I mean that in the most general of terms because I have a lot of interests and passions in life.  Don’t we all? We all have hobbies and interests and mine molded me into knowing exactly what I wanted to do now.

 When I was still in high school I asked my mom to put me in sewing classes because I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer. Then after graduating from high school I ended up going to college for business with an emphasis on IT. Then in 2011 I wanted to become a makeup artist and got hired at Sephora. I ended up realizing that fashion was always number one in my heart and remembered that that’s where I found my real confidence.

 It was back in middle school when I used to take modeling classes just as an after school thing—which I also think is quite hilarious considering the fact it was actually backstage where I found my true confidence, and not on the runway.  

 Girls running around from table to table and from hair to makeup chair—clothes flying from multiple outfit changes—fashion disasters happening left and right. Oh the rush of the backstage at a fashion show. This was my graduation for my advanced classes and my second go around. Without even taking a second thought, I picked up one of my white jean jackets, gave it to my friend to wear, who was feeling something was missing from her look, and tied it at her waist to cinch in her frame.  It was just the perfect thing her outfit needed. Another girl was frantic because her sleeveless top accentuated her recently sunburnt arms. Thinking quickly, I took her foundation and applied it to her arms to tone down the glowingly scorched red tones. Crisis averted.

 With all of the problem solving and the fashion solutions I came up with gave the other girls such confidence that I realized that I unconsciously gave them with my own confidence. I loved helping people. It was simple as that. Then fast-forward to the present when I finally filtered what I wanted to do was combined the two things I loved the most—my love of fashion, and my love for helping others.

 And that’s how I ended up at the Academy of Art University, sitting in this blogging class…

Have you ever had that questioning moment when you thought, “Is this what I want to do for the rest of my life?” …Obviously I did, HAH! But just know that it’s not the end of the world, and everything happens for a reason.
