regarding lighting and model fidelity, what makes the n64 specifically evoke a particular style is how the 3D Renderer is primarily designed as exclusive microcode for the Reality Display Processor. These different microcodes have particular iterations over time, like SM64 with Fast3D, other games with F3DEX, and eventually the Zelda game's F3DZEX2 (a sub-variant of F3DEX2). These microcodes had limitations and performance penalties over the other, with F3DEX2 being the clear improvement over the others.
these microcodes in particular all have a few quirks, in that you can't have dynamic lighting and vertex colors applied on the same vertex. This causes most n64 games shading to either be real-time rendered with global illumination and point lighting with simple, rudimentary position based vertex normals, or pre-baked vertex colors that couldn't dynamically be adjusted based on light properties.
some n64 games got around this by doing some really impressive stuff. i note RARE especially, as their lighting techniques utilize a lot of clever workarounds to achieve both in some aspects, however it is very limited and was more or less done with heavy performance penalties.
not to mention the n64 has a 4kilobyte texture cache, resulting in a graphical fidelity of a maximum of 64x128 greyscale textures. Most n64 textures you see are 32x32 RGBA or 64x64 IA 16-bit indexed. This meant that most models didn't use up-and-coming texture standards like texture atlasing due this ridiculously small cache only able to fit a couple textures at most at a time. This overhead caused a lot of memory bottleneck as most textures were constantly being re-cached every frame, and the n64's rambus is already so slow.
hell, the n64 can even render high-poly models with a decent amount of power! what really holds the console back is how the pixel depth is calculated, and having overlapping polygons requires the depth buffer to take even more time calculating what pixels to draw. something that can help with this is having the depth buffer draw front-to-back instead of the standard back-to-front, therefore not even needing to check if there's something behind the pixel in question, but this is much harder to handle things like layering and clipping. at least culling non-visible polygons helps a little.
don't get me started on transparency or we'd be here all night.
the dreamcast had a much stronger rendering engine, and such limitations were much less common. the style of my game is , in my humble, experienced opinion, actually reasonably renderable on a real console. all my textures are standard n64 size and resolution with indexing to match, all the shadows are vertex normal based instead of dynamically casted, some of the level geometry like the trees and walls could use some simplifying, i guess, but that's only if you plan on having them all visible at the same time in the viewport, as i've laid the level out in a way that blocks different areas from being visible, saving on theoretical congestion.
the lack of textures and instead heavy utilization of primitive color for my display lists would have a great performance benefit, at the expense of visual design!
but hey. maybe you're right and my random time-crunched game is indicative of a wider issue of gamers:tm: not knowing what *real* style and aesthetic really is. and that is really worth sharing. nonetheless i appreciate your apology.
