was it something i said?
nanashi mumei/ceres fauna
fauna would do anything to protect mumei, anything to keep her safe...
Angst, Memory Loss, Short One Shot, an explanation for mumei not remembering how nature got corrupted, Songfic
Was it something I said?
Mumei felt her stomach lurch, air bubbling uncomfortably in her throat. Her heart felt like it was dripping with pain, squeezed and dribbling in her ribcage.
Was it something I did?
Someone was grabbing ahold of her hands, gentle, but insistent, trying to tug her back to herself again. Mumei let the rush of nausea take over, sloshing her down to her knees. A dull hum blocked her ears, bricking herself inside her brain. It was so dark and… fuzzy.
Was it something I said?
Gentle hands followed her, deciding to take hold of her shoulder, gripping more desperate now. They hold her close, and Mumei remembers the smell. The smell of fresh grass, damp moss, and the light, airy scent of tulips. She couldn't quite place it, she just knew that she recognized it. A shiver in her back told her she was missing something- something big.
Dear darling, I'm sorry I never meant to-
The hum began to dull, leaving a shaky hush of words. Mumei felt the strands of hair and petals drape across her face. It sent tingles down to the tip of her nose, making her sniff to push the stray hair away.
-Stay out so late.
Mumei felt a familiar emptiness settle in her mind, it made itself cozy as she lifted her head. She was met with the eyes of a beautiful stranger…? That can't be right…
I got carried away.
Shining yellows, sunny and flickering. They were always flickering, weren't they? All down Mumei's face, before finally meeting her own.
Was it something I said?
"Mumei?" the stranger's hushed voice shook.
'I guess that's my name,'
"Uh… hey! You…" Mumei spoke, trailing off while trying to grasp a name in her mind. It was still content with it's emptiness.
You left me crushed.
"Oh god…" The stranger covered her mouth, trying to mask an uncertain gasp. She looked so… so unmistakable- green hair with flowers sprouting from its ends, branched antlers, tender demeanor, so why couldn't she just remember a name-
Were you losing your head?
Mumei scrunched up her face as she thought, her brain prickling with effort, then pain. Sharp and quick thoughts assaulted her eyes and ears.
Over something that you lost?
Ideas of expansion, of protection of sacred civilization. She needed to keep the elements from consuming this beautiful thing the humans created. Factions split off from this creation, soiling the land around it. The forest, Mumei found, could burn, just about as well as it could consume.
And did you feel it too?
She couldn't help but grunt, the pain fluttering out through her lips. Mumei felt the kind stranger pull her into an embrace. She couldn't help but notice a lack of a beat.
"Don't do this, please," the stranger chanted to herself.
When we both went blind.
Mumei didn't understand, she couldn't. She was tied to the life of the world, while Mumei only had to observe- she didn't know what she was doing when she did it. They were both sent to protect, that's the only similarity they have.
You wouldn't even look me in the, oh darling-
Civilization corrupted nature…
You wouldn't look me in the eyes.
Just like that, it was all over. It had all clicked, and just as soon as it did, it all was erased once more.
Was it something I said?
Fauna had to start over, Mumei hardly recalling she'd ever done this before. Fauna couldn't remind her, not without risking her losing everything again.
Was it something I said?
The secret had to be kept, and Fauna would stop at nothing to help Mumei, even if it meant corralling her animals, even if it meant giving up some of her plants to be domesticated in farms, even if it meant…
Was it something I said?
Making sure no one knew of this again…
Was it something I said?
Stealing, tearing, and burning the pages she could find in Mumei's notebook.
Was it something I said?
Anything…
Was it something I said?
Anything for her Mumei…
Anything to keep her Mumei safe...
