An open letter to the U.S. Senate
Pass the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act
474 so far! Help us get to 500 signers!
There were over 500 near-misses by major commercial airlines last year. Every one of these misses could’ve been the next airline crash disaster killing hundreds of passengers. One of the problems is that air traffic controllers are working 10 hour shifts, 6 days a week, with mandatory overtime. And the problem is getting worse as the airline industry loses more air traffic controllers each year than it’s training to replace them. Congress can take a huge step forward in restoring public safety for travelers, workers, and the public at large by reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration now. The good news is that in August of last year, the House passed the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act -- the bipartisan legislation to restore and improve important aviation safety and infrastructure programs. Since then the Senate has passed a budget for training 3,000 more air traffic controllers over the next 5 years, but that’s not good enough. It doesn’t address the working conditions and other safety issues, and that means it won’t go far enough to improve safety and make it safer to fly. I’m writing to urge you to please co-sponsor and pass the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration with maximum staffing for air traffic controllers now.

Man, Dog Survive Ocean Plane Crash, Swim to Shore
The horror that came in seeing a small plane crash into the ocean off California on Sunday soon turned to relief as the pilot and his dog were able to escape the wreckage and swim to shore, where they were met by responding authorities. The pilot had reported engine trouble before his single-engine Piper […]

FAA's Boeing 737 Max Inspectors Were Underqualified
Tumblr media
An aerial photo shows Boeing 737 MAX airplanes parked on the tarmac at the Boeing Factory in Renton, Washington, March 21, 2019. Lindsey Wasson | Reuters Some of the Federal Aviation Administration inspectors who worked on training requirements for the troubled Boeing 737 Max planes and other aircraft were underqualified and the air safety agency misled lawmakers about it, federal investigators said Tuesday. The investigation is adding to scrutiny of the agency that certified the Boeing 737 Max to fly in 2017. The planes have been grounded worldwide since mid-March after two fatal crashes within five months of one another claimed the lives of all 346 people on board. The U.S. Office of Special Counsel sent letters to President Donald Trump and lawmakers outlining its findings, which stem from a whistleblower complaint about qualifications of FAA inspectors. The FAA's Office of Audit and Evaluation in February said it found that 16 of 22 safety inspectors did not complete formal training while 11 of the 16 lacked flight-instructor certificates. The FAA told a Senate panel in April that all Boeing 737 Max inspectors who worked on the Flight Standardization Board that sets pilot training and procedures were qualified, but the Special Counsel's office said its findings contradicted that. "The FAA is entrusted with the critically important role of ensuring aircraft safety," Special Counsel Henry J. Kerner said in a release. "The FAA's failure to ensure safety inspector competency for these aircraft puts the flying public at risk." The FAA said it was reviewing the letter. "We remain confident in our representations to Congress and in the work of our aviation safety professionals," the FAA said in a statement. "Aviation safety is always our foremost priority, and we look forward to responding to the concerns that have been raised." "All of the Aviation Safety Inspectors who participated in the evaluation of the Boeing 737 MAX were fully qualified for those activities," it said. Read the full article

Data used by #airlines to measure #passenger average weights might require updating. Soon, airlines might be asking passengers to share how much they weigh or get weighed in the airport as part of a study to update the information. According to Fox Business, the obesity rate in the #UnitedStates is increasing, causing the old measurements to be outdated. According to airline blog View From The Wing, which cited an advisory sent out by the #FederalAviationAdministration, carriers now need to update that information to ensure safe weight distribution on flights. To update the information, airlines could be required to take surveys to set new “standard average passenger weights” for passengers, crew members, and baggage through random sampling and ask for passenger participation. However, the survey would be conducted voluntarily... ______ Me🗣: Yall so dam big they having to reconfigure weigh distribution for safe travels, but Im the problem for telling you to exercise and eat right, right?...right 😅🤣😅🤣 https://www.instagram.com/p/CPGVSGCnZCh/?utm_medium=tumblr

#DroneSurveyinAbuDhabi is a highly specialized type of surveying. It requires extensive knowledge of the requirements of the #FederalAviationAdministration (FAA) Advisory Circulars in order to successfully complete the work to the accuracies required for acceptance by the #NationalGeodeticSurvey (NGS) and the FAA. This survey work forms the basis for the FAA Airports #GIS initiative and is critical for the development of safe and accurate approach procedures. This is an interesting topic. I like talking about new technology and this is something that I'd like to know more about. Does anyone use drones on their farms? I'd love to write a story on that and talk about just how they work and what advantages they bring to running an operation. Got any recommendations for someone that might let me write about them?

Proposed FAA rules loosen restrictions on drone flights at night
Proposed FAA rules loosen restrictions on drone flights at night
Right on the heels of Canada introducing new, stricter regulations for drone operations, the US Department of Transportation proposeda new set of rules for drones that would allow the unmanned vehicles to fly over populated areas and operate at night. The proposal also includes a pilot program for drone traffic management that would help to integrate the aircrafts into the nation’s…

DOT Watchdog Audits FAA Pilot Training After Boeing 737 Max Crashes
Tumblr media
The cockpit of Jet Airways Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft Abhirup Roy | Reuters The Department of Transportation's watchdog on Monday said it will review federal pilot training requirements, a move that comes after two fatal crashes of Boeing's 737 Max raised questions about increasing automation in aircraft. Pilots in both crashes battled an automated flight-control system that was erroneously activated and repeatedly pushed the planes' noses down before their fatal dives. Boeing has updated the system to give pilots greater control but the Federal Aviation Administration hasn't yet approved the planes to return to service. The manufacturer faces several more hurdles including a certification flight with the FAA, before regulators will sign off on the jetliners, which have been grounded since last March after the second of the two crashes. Pilots complained that they didn't even know the flight-control system, known as MCAS, was included in the planes until after the first crash — Lion Air Flight 610 in Indonesia that went down shortly after takeoff in October 2018. That crash, and a 737 Max crash in Ethiopia last March, killed all 346 people on the two flights. "These fatal accidents have drawn widespread attention to FAA's oversight and certification practices, including the Agency's process for establishing pilot training requirements for the aircraft," the department's Office of Inspector General said in a statement. The office will review how the FAA formulates pilot training requirements as well as how international regulators design their training requirements "regarding the use of flight deck automation." The FAA said it welcomed the audit. "Raising and harmonizing pilot training standards across the globe are among the FAA's top aviation safety priorities," it said. "We continue to pursue expanded conversations among the world's aviation regulators to identify ways to enhance international aviation safety through robust pilot training programs." Boeing didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Read the full article
