june 3rd/4th is some kinda holiday now i guess. lmao

less than 30 days until the anniversary. getting my old drafts of the later chapters back into ao3 has been a pain (it was a pain the first time also, all the particular formatting makes it tedious) but since we're less than 30 days out and im going to be posting them before or on the anniversary and no later, there's no worry about them getting deleted after 30 days anymore.

the last two chapters are 100% complete (as they have been for. a long time) and the two chapters before that have bits and pieces that still need to be written, basically as i outlined the last time i made an update like this. im just aiming for bare-bones "point a to point b" at this point and anything else is extra; i will not have the last two chapters delayed past the anniversary because the middle two don't want to cooperate. the last two chapters should more than hold together even if the foundation leading up to them is... not weak, but not as strong as it could be.

as for what happens after, i think im gonna leave this blog be for a while, though my inbox will remain open if anyone has anything interesting to add. if i do get ideas for future stuff, though, well. i'll be here. and if anyone else finds ruins i don't already have (or if i find anything) ill always reblog those.

a year will have gone by as of tomorrow morning when this will be posted, so i guess ill do another atdas progress report of sorts.

the expologue is officially going to be my favorite chapter now because there's no contest anymore. even the tremendous heights of the climax can't compare to the pure symbolic weight behind the final scene. the inexorability of the narrative as a source of comfort is not where i was expecting to take this. the original "ending" waa much more open ending, but the layer of tragedy intertwined with this - the refocusing of who the actual main character was - it just. ohnge.

but also a lot of other scenes that were previously finished have gotten major overhauls. the argument is much more poignant now, though i still might redo its introduction; other scenes are also better optimized.

DEFINITELY gonna cut the dark room subplot entirely, that's going nowhere and with how sharply focused everything else is becoming it just has no place anymore and it's not like it went anywhere anyway.

i still have so much to write but i wanna try to have everything finished and published by the anniversary of the finale. its gonna be hard to get it out in time though - there's so much early shit to write even if i trim a lot of it down.

Snakeskins in 2021

So, I’ve been looking through a bunch of stuff because I found a bunch more old Snakeskins posts to put in my queue for archiving, but looking through it has made me realize that the Snakeskins “fandom”... might not actually be dead. Just hibernating.

Like, it’s very clear that very few people have thought about it all that much over the last several years, but as I’ve been looking through blogs and seeing the number of people who’ve posted or reblogged stuff related to Snakeskins as recently as 2020? There are WAY more out there than I was expecting.

I don’t think any of the “currently active” fans would remember me even if I were posting from my main instead of a sideblog. The TL;DR of my involvement in the Snakeskins fandom is that I made two sizeable posts about it back in the heyday: a theory post about what the “ghost” was, and a more mathematical post that attempted to calculate how long Snakeskins would be. (I’m not linking either post because I don’t want this blog to be connected to my main, but the math post in particular is relatively easy to find if you do a bit of digging around for it. I know it’s definitely findable because at least one of the "currently active” fans found and liked it at some point.)

It’s kinda... dangerous? to be open about still liking He/tal/i/a or anything related to it in [CURRENT YEAR]. It’s a very easy way to get harassed unless you curate your followers very carefully, and even then it’s still possible. (And the harassment can get incredibly intense — it’s the reason Sunny deleted her blog two years ago, and also why this is a sideblog not attached to my main.)

But honestly? I just finished rereading Snakeskins again a few weeks ago, and ever since then I’ve been working on a ~special project~ related to it for a specific anniversary coming up in just under three months.

So yeah. Just a little cry into the abyss to see if anybody’s still out there.

And if for some reason somebody finds this post and hasn’t read Snakeskins... go read. Start with everything on AO3, then jump to chapter 54 on FFN and Ctrl+F “The strange clothes” to keep going. You’re in for a ride — especially if you’re a fan of very layered and nuanced portrayals of the Nations and Nationhood in general.

spending new year's eve working on atdas. making good progress and even better connections on the most important scene. also the recontextualizations.... i was looking for a centerpiece, an emotional finale to draw everything together in parallel with the plot's finale (and with any luck at least be comparable to recovery's final scene). and, well, i think this just about wraps up everything. including a lot of the details that were not previously important beyond details, but now have symbolic weight. so far it has entirely been written to levitation by fewjar and i do not see myself changing the music any time soon.

"it all comes back to you" but also "bigger on the inside" but also "nested within itself" but also "orchestrated your own escape" but also "remembers the ending" but also "there will be no time and no lonely days and another me will take my place and drown while you stroke its cheek"

so many extremely complicated and layered thoughts and emotions but the important part was that they all mattered. all of it was real and all of it mattered. and... well. that's what recovery is all about.

i am not dead. i took a hiatus from working on AtDaS for a while bc i had a Lot of other shit going on but now i have a real job in my field (pog) and have started working on it again. (also i just can't be fucking bothered to fill my queue lmao)

the hope is to have another chapter out in time for april 16th/23rd since that's another fun anniversary. not sure if i'll make it there because the middle section of this is still very... improv-y? like, the story outline for AtDaS is basically just:

episition chapter (POSTED)

next scene of SFeli subplot (DONE)

FLRciano subplot proper introduction (DONE)

next scene of darkroom subplot (planned-ish, partially done, but i got stuck on it a while back for a reason lmao)

stages subplot ("planned" in that i have fragments of vibes and a general kind of escalating arc, but not really anything that can be specifically outlined perhaps? like i know where this is going and how it's going to get there but unlike the other arcs where i know what certain scenes are going to be ahead of time all i can really say is that these are going to be RAW dialogue that i later go back and add tags for because that's the best way to write barely-not-arguments)

the rest of the SFeli subplot ("planned" in that i know where it Needs to go, but there's complicated shit here that i need to figure out. FL (probably) doesn't have enough material in the right places for me to be able to stretch this for how far it needs to go, but we'll get there when we get there)

the rest of the FLRciano subplot ("planned" in that i know where it needs to go, but there's a lot of stuff to sort through here because there are very particular kinds of energies that im looking for with this subplot? the "proper introduction" gets one set of the criteria across, the finale section gets another set, and the 170 is going to be :chefkiss:. you'd think this would be major beats only but it's actually kinda the opposite of that - it's the lucidity (and anti-lucidity, which is not the same thing as un-lucidity) that matters more. either way this is more about picking specific points to riff from and then exploiting the uneven distribution of these points to create ENERGY energy)

the rest of the darkroom subplot (this needs to go places but i have no idea how im going to get it there lmao. this subplot is VERY likely to get cut tbh, or at minimum cut down. there's very little that it does that the stages subplot doesn't do better and what little this does that that can't could be condensed into like. one scene. rip)

stages subplot finale/third type of magic (has been DONE since like september lmao)

a few scenes either directly preceding third type of magic or in between it and the finale chapter for each of the subplots. mostly thinking of FLRciano 170, but there's other shit that could maybe go in here too. (PLANNED though placement as you can guess is WIP, mostly because there's a REALLY cool scene that im somewhat including with third type of magic that i really don't want to cut, but it leaves off on a WAY wrong tone to directly join with the finale chapter)

finale chapter (all DONE minus like four paragraphs that i got stuck on rip. also has been done for a very very long fucking time, one of the scenes in here was the first thing i wrote of this before i even had the idea to turn it into a fic)

expologue short-chapter (basically DONE though i might change some things here)

so that's about where that is. ill probably want to get a similar amount of content out to what i did for the first chapter, which will probably be 5-6 "standard" length scenes instead of a bunch of snippets (because most of the snippets were exposition of sorts). which means the chapter's about 30-40% done depending, because ive got those two scenes complete already and ive maybe got a few other pieces of things that could go here.

so, there's that! and god one of those scenes fucks so hard. a chess game as an exact metaphor is far better than i was hoping for but i sure did find it lmao.

also i got a new ipod bc my old one Broke broke and it's got sick ass theming lmao ill post pics at some point maybe.

also the entire album of Until by Fewjar fucks. so fucking hard. all kinds of pogger energies and god the songs flow so well on the actual album instead of youtube.
