Fire Notes 05
Tumblr media
After months of paperwork, securing permits for shipping out recently obsolete optical media, further encumbered by various degrees of lockdown, we finally managed to send some miniDV and VHS tapes from Papaya's conflagrated archives.
Receiving them in Vancouver are our friends from the media archive initiative Recollective, who have banded together and kindly volunteered to help in the rescue and restoration of these rare archival works.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The materials consist of miniDV and VHS of artists' moving image works and documentation of performances and various events held in Papaya the last few decades: Donna Miranda's choreographic projects; documentation of Papaya's 10the anniversary celebrations; miniDV of the early noise, media art and WSK events; Tad Ermitano's only remaining analog copy of his film, The Retrochronological Transfer of Information (1994); and a few VHS tapes that collect the early video experiments of Lena Cobangbang. Most of these were fire-damaged, wet and moldy, a true challenge for any archivist, regardless of media.
Between 2014-2015, back when we had working VHS players, Papaya and Los Otros managed to make crude digital reference transfers of some materials, like Tad's and Lena's, and Katya Guerrero's (luckily returned to her before the fire!). Tad's was included in the first edition of the Kalampag Tracking Agency screening program. While attending a media archives workshop, co-led by former National Film Archives director Bono Olgado, artist-curator Con Cabrera transferred materials from one of Lena's VHS tapes labeled Green Strip '97. This tape collected 5 video works, and a collaborative, all-analog audiovisual performance at Surrounded By Water in Angono, 1998.

The generated interest and research surplus turned into an advocacy that eventually led to an independent archival project between Green Papaya and Los Otros. Lena's Torch Song was included in Post Gallery's Instructions exhibition that Shireen Seno (Los Otros) and Merv Espina (Papaya) curated, and thanks to Romeo Lee's trusty VCR, it was even shown in its original format as a VHS-loop. In the hopes of aggregating and encouraging further research into Philippine experiments with the moving image led to Light Leaks, that was launched at and hosted by Ateneo Areté in September 2018.
It took 2 years, but the next Light Leaks eventually found a partner with MCAD through its MCAD Platforms program this September. The current edition features some of these crude digital transfers of Lena's and Katya's works, combined with the independent archiving efforts of Jean Marie Syjuco and Art Lab. To learn more about the Philippine artists' moving image histories, please join us tonight for a discussion with Lena and art historian Eileen Legaspi Ramirez: https://bit.ly/MCADPlatformsEE⁣⁣⁣
Lena's works are now on view until 15 September 2020: bit.ly/MCADPlatformsCobangbang

Thanks to Don Gervin Arawan of the National Film Archives of the Philippines and Roman Carreon of the Film Development Council for helping us secure the certificate from the Optical Media Board to clear us for shipping to Vancouver. Our deepest gratitude and respect to Allison Collins, Dan Pon, Emma Metcalfe Hurst, Karen Knights, Tara Fraser, grunt gallery, VIVO Media Arts Centre, and the Recollective family for extending much needed love, support, resources and archival expertise in these troubling times.
Many have forgotten that it is wrong to kill, or that Manila's name came from a mangrove, Ixora manila, that once thrived along our shores and riverbanks. During these days of easy murder, morals are twisted, violent hate crimes are easily pardoned, and the state continues to white wash and white sand their corruptions, we continue to be thankful to have friends who, regardless of geography and geopolitics, still share the same values and continue to care and to remember. To remember is to resist.
Images: Playback (1998), Lena Cobangbang and friends, video still with a line from Vince Serrano's poem, Fireflies Lena's "only existing copy yet" of Green Strip and others in a VHS comprising of works from 1997-2000, showing some specks of mold Donna Miranda's Anatomy of Love and Desire (2004), badly overcome with mold Donna's box of video documentation a few days after the fire of 3 June 2020 Tad Ermitaño's translations of his VHS with Japanese labels containing The Retrochonological Transfer of Information Inventory and condition check of WSK miniDV tapes Papaya’s tape archives package in Recollective member Dan Pon's apartment, his black cat Boris inspecting and looking displeased

In-form Spurs should bank another win but Dave Tindall says Wolves can get on the scoresheet in Saturday’s encounter at Wembley…
Tottenham v WolvesSaturday, 15:00Spurs on fireNot only have Spurs replaced Man City in second spot – six behind Liverpool – they’ve even started scoring goals in the wild numbers we associate with Pep Guardiola’s men.Six against Everton, five against Bournemouth and a variety of ways to put the ball in the net.Amazingly, they’ve played the first half of the season without a draw, their outstanding tally of 45 points courtesy of 15 wins and four defeats.Since the 1-0 loss to City, they’ve won eight out of nine in the Premier League and, for good measure, reached the semi-finals of the League Cup and drawn 1-1 in the Nou Camp to earn a last 16 Champions League tie with Dortmund.Right now, it seems they can do little wrong.Wolves could enjoy WembleyWolves are settled in mid-table, one of a number of teams capable of stringing a few results together to perhaps take temporary ownership of seventh spot and generally oscillating between there and 12th.Which is fine really. Other teams with similar credentials have flopped but Wolves certainly look as if they have a plan under Nuno Espirito Santo. One tactic is spreading the play to their full-backs and that could work well for them on the wide-open spaces of Wembley.Wolves have an away record of W3, D3, L3 after nicking a late point at Fulham and it certainly bodes well for this encounter that they managed to come away with scoring draws at Old Trafford and The Emirates.Spurs hot favourites to maintain chaseTottenham beat Wolves 3-2 at Molineux earlier this season and are just [1.38] to complete the double. Wolves are [10.5] to bring the Spurs charge to a juddering halt while The Draw is [5.3].It’s hard to really argue against the home win but I think we can improve on it by backing Wolves to grab a goal too.Bournemouth were tonked 5-0 but should really have scored along the way and, with Spurs seemingly playing exhibition football at the moment, a clued-up side such as Wolves can nick a goal at least if the hosts drop their guard.Starting with that 3-2 loss to Pochettino’s men, Wolves have netted in seven of nine games and I’ll take them to make it eight in 10.Tottenham to win and Both teams to Score pays [3.15].A safer option is to play the simple BTTS and ‘Yes’ at [2.02] looks fair enough to me.Tottenham have conceded at Wembley in five of their eight home games and in current mood they look happy to simply outscore rivals even if it means giving one up at the other end.Harry Kane is just [1.61] to add to his tally of 12 Premier League goals (joint-second in Golden Boot race) and that looks plenty short enough even though he’s on a great run again.Son Heung-Min at [2.24] has also been collared but Christian Eriksen at [3.75] looks worth a small play given that he’s netted in his last three Premier League games. For Wolves, I like the [7.0] for Matt Doherty. The Irishman should make runs into the box, as he did when popping up to score the winner at Newcastle, and the roaming defender has bagged a goal in three of Wolves’ last six away games. You could justify a punt at 5/4 on those numbers so let’s see if Doherty can come up with the goods again. In the Same Game Multi, it’s 4.39 for Eriksen to net in a Spurs win.

It wasn't a matter of minutes, but split seconds. A misstep could have been a life lost.⁣ ⁣ Catch272 was getting ready to reopen as a takeout service. They had just bought a freezer and other new equipment. Having painted the floor all night, Apauls was actually about to go to sleep on the couch when she heard the commotion from next door. It was 10:39 A.M. when she ran to the streets and we received her messages a minute later. ⁣ ⁣ At 10:43 A.M., a small fire truck from Barangay Kamuning arrived. They seemed successful but within five minutes they ran out of water. The fire raged on. Two big fire trucks arrived at 10:49 A.M.--you can see them enter frame in the ABS-CBN footage. ⁣ ⁣ It didn't take long for the smoke and fire to turn into a blazing inferno that engulfed our shared space. Apauls' photos, videos and messages have timestamps. Based on these, she has been trying to reconstruct her memories of the morning of June 3 in a series of Fire Archives posts on Facebook. Her photos and videos here capture some of those crucial moments.⁣ ⁣ If you can:⁣ http://tiny.cc/helppapaya⁣ http://tiny.cc/helpcatch272⁣ ⁣ Photos and videos by Aplue Apauls

The storage area was the most badly hit section, so we went to check what might have survived the fire. We wanted to save as much as we could, should the artists want to take back what remains. Going through some of the works was like walking back through our history since moving to Kamuning in 2008. It was not the stale, putrid air and ash swirling around us that brought tears to our eyes, but the rush of memories and the physical confrontation of loss.

Green Papaya's archives are a community's archives. Our collection is not just confined to memories within Papaya's lifetime, some date much older. This wasn't always so deliberate; it happened organically as our practice and interest encouraged it, and friends sometimes shared or forgot materials with us.
Before VIVA ExCon Iloilo in November 2016, Merv Espina and Lesley-Anne Cao started working on Roxlee's archives with David Teh and Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin for the MISFITS exhibition in 2017. Had the Iloilo vote to host VIVA ExCon 2018 not gone to Capiz (Peewee's province), Papaya might have focused on a project with Rox's journals and comics from the '80s-'90s.
Rox's comics range from the stuff he published with the iconic Jingle Magazine in the late '70s, indie zines ca. '80s and '90s, and to drafts from the early '00s that didn't make it into his book Cesar Asar in the Planet of the Noses that Khavn published in 2008.
Rox's archives are veterans of the 2009 Typhoon Ondoy as floods reached the 2nd floor of the home he shared with his brother Romeo. Since Rox's archives were scant, we had to source from other friends. Through this act of borrowing, we inadvertently saved some copies of Maghiar Tuason and Jing Garcia's Red Racket--the fanzine for Red Rocks, later known as the legendary Club Dredd--from a fire that nearly ravaged Maghiar's house.
The fire that razed Papaya and Catch272 last June 3 decimated the backroom where we stored a lot of Rox's stuff along with various artworks and archival objects. Some got charred beyond recognition, others barely made it.
While sorting through the surviving materials, we were happy to discover that some of Rox's and Maghiar's materials were intact. Narrowly escaping fire and flood, calamity seems to be following them. Or they're just very lucky.

Hello! It's been a while since our last update about the recovery. Today marks the 2nd month since the June 3 fire destroyed our Kamuning space, and our last night before the second edition of Duterte's Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine in Metro Manila.
Apologies for the recent lack of posts about our recovery efforts since our last Fire Notes post on June 9, 2020. The Papaya team has been overwhelmed with the work in the aftermath of the fire, on top of our individual civic and personal engagements. The hurdles of mobility, lack of income, and this authoritarian regime's intimidation tactics, unyielding talent for sustained abuse of power ,and petty antagonism did not make things easier. But we need to labor on.
There's a lot of updates. But this post will focus on the help that the Lopez Museum and Library (LML) have extended us. Yes, this museum was started by the same family that started the recently shutdown ABS-CBN.
Timing, climate and recent events have not been so kind to a many of us.
Hearing of our plight the days following the fire, LML reached out to us and offered their support. LML have very generously donated space, time, technical expertise and services to help Papaya, despite their own ongoing problems.
Rendered homeless because of the fire, we lacked a dry, secure space to dry and process our materials, LML have volunteered the use of their restoration laboratory at their temporary archival facility. Papaya was able to transport our surviving materials there last June 13, 2020. Thanks to this space, we were able to lay out and do partial re-inventories of what survived.
Exposure to extreme heat and humidity by both the fire and the current rainy season have made our surviving materials even more delicate. They have also become perfect habitats for numerous forms of life, especially several varieties of mold. Life persists in spite of disaster, sometimes even because of it. Not many realize that archiving can be a dangerous task. Mold, ash, dust and other invisible threats in the archival materials and their enclosed space have caused some minor outbreaks of rashes, migraines, colds and other allergic reactions among the Papaya team directly processing the rescue efforts at LML, despite the use of PPE.
After making sure the materials have all dried, it was time to kill the mold though chemical fumigation. Dehumidification took a few weeks until early July. Fumigation can only proceed once all the materials have fully dried. Allowing the mold to grow and not treating the entirety of the collection would risk infection to other materials and continued health hazards to the team. It was a fight for time because the mold was spreading fast. Due to the enormity of the materials, LML had to jerryrig a new fumigation chamber by modifying one of their spare rooms. Nothing fancy, just a lot of trashbags and duct tape. Papaya's surviving materials took 3 batches in this chamber. As of this writing, the third and last batch is now in the last phase of processing.
There are more details that we would like to tell to disclose But that's for later posts. For now, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to LML for their first aid efforts and providing a temporary home for the surviving archives as Papaya continues to prepare a new dedicated processing space to continue our cataloguing, restoration, and digitization efforts.
We are humbled and very thankful to Mercedes Lopez-Vargas, Margarita Villanueva, Thea Sulangi, Gerald Solano, James Makasiar and the rest of the Lopez Museum's lab team for their support during these trying times.
