A Former Dairy Barn in Connecticut Moooves To the Top of This Week’s Most Popular Homes
Realtor.com
What’s ruling the roost this week, according to all of your clicks, are properties with a lot of land. It seems people are just about ready for a permanent vacation! From the Massachusetts Berkshires to California’s Ventura County, these popular properties offer plenty of peace—and social distancing from neighbors—away from the big city.
At the very top is a tony 5,300-square-foot home in the town of Roxbury, CT. It once served as a dairy and, after a renovation, its sleek style could now grace the pages of any architectural magazine.
Even the sole big-city property on the list, in Brooklyn, NY, boasts an unconventional amount of space at 2,000 square feet, plus an attached garage in an area where parking is slim to nonexistent.
Scroll down to see all the properties that are inspiring people to get away from it all.
10. 8930 Hamilton Rd, Cambridge, OH
Price: $3,599,900 Why it’s here: Bring all your motorized vehicles to Deer Valley Farm’s 16-car garage—on a 300-acre lot hugging the 10-acre lake, which means you’ll want to bring your water toys, too.
Custom-built in 1981, the 5,230-square-foot home was constructed with fieldstone sourced on the property. There’s a trickling waterfall in the entry, a wine cellar on the lower level, and a flagstone patio. This ultimate family compound features four bedrooms and 4.5 baths in the main house, plus two other (smaller) homes.
8930 Hamilton Rd., Cambridge, OH

9. 3305 Black Lick Rd, Rural Retreat, VA
Price: $400,000 Why it’s here: With a smokehouse, log cabin, and hand-painted mural, it’s like you’re back in 1911, when the home was built.
Searching for land in the bucolic South—with a sweet farmhouse and wraparound porch? This two-story brick home (with five bedrooms and two baths) on a 5.3-acre lot flaunts a grand staircase and the living room’s aforementioned mural (depicting the property itself). Dabble in artistic pursuits or fix-it jobs in the property’s workshop.

8. 2360 Mohawk Trail, North Adams, MA
Price: $1,600,000 Why it’s here: This Berkshires beauty appeals to budding bed-and-breakfast proprietors with five guest cottages, a cafe, and a gift shop.
As the listing teases, “live in the clouds and enjoy the views” (you can see three states from here) at this midcentury three-bedroom, three-bath abode set along the 63-mile Mohawk Trail. By day, run a business checking in travelers to the guest cottages, drawn to the area’s trout fishing, fall foliage, and snowmobiling and skiing—and then relax with a glass of wine on the spacious deck at night.

7. 10558 Flatlands 8th St, Brooklyn, NY
Price: $699,000 Why it’s here: A 2,000-square-foot home in New York City. Need we say more?
A one-car attached garage, plus three bedrooms and two baths, make this split-level home feel more suburban than in the Brooklyn borough’s southeastern corner where it is located. The dated decor suggests oodles of potential and DIY projects galore. Host barbecues in the huge backyard while bragging about your parking space.

6. 300 Ocean Gate Ave, Ocean Gate, NJ
Price: $474,000 Why it’s here: Wake up two blocks from the beach in New Jersey for under a half-million dollars.
Flaunting six bedrooms and four baths, this custom-built home dating to 1945 (but renovated since) is more than a vacation pad—it’s large enough to be a primary property or host guests on rotation. Two living rooms allow everyone to spread out, plus there’s a built-in bar for at-home entertaining.

5. 5 Stillpoint Meadows Rd, West Tisbury, MA
Price: $3,300,000 Why it’s here: This one’s for HGTV fans who don’t want to lift a finger while they’re enjoying their Martha’s Vineyard vacation: a home with 1714 roots that was renovated top to bottom three years ago.
Blending old with new—including a chandelier rescued from the basement and the property’s barn wood in the revamped living room design—the five-bedroom, four-bath Luce Athearn House is Cape Cod at its finest. Pull open the French doors to the patio for a better view of the lawns, gardens, and pond, or hang out on the screened porch. Well, actually, you won’t be doing that. The island retreat quickly found a buyer after just a few weeks on the market.

4. 4630 Rio Bravo Court, Moorpark, CA
Price: $1,525,000 Why it’s here: This chic retreat boasts custom tweaks, including herringbone-patterned flooring, louvered shutters, and a smart patio awning that self-closes in a rainstorm.
Within a week of going on the market, this bright and airy four-bedroom, 4.5-bath home had found a buyer. Built in 2000, this 3,000-square-foot charmer on a large lot comes with a three-car garage. It also boasts a red-tile roof and quiet cul-de-sac setting.

3. 63 Circle Way, Saint Peters, MO
Price: $925,000 Why it’s here: An 1852 farmhouse in a St. Louis suburb is the best of both worlds.
The 3,500-square-foot historic farmhouse, which has three bedrooms and 2.5 baths, has been immaculately preserved. It is set on 4 acres with a private pond. Cooking enthusiasts will drool over the kitchen’s granite countertops, exposed-brick walls, and barn-wood ceilings.

2. Zorro Ranch, Stanley, NM
Price: $27,500,000 Why it’s here: This swanky ranch on almost 8,000 acres outside Santa Fe was the property of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who lived here at times.
The four-bedroom house spans three levels. The estate includes a caretaker’s cottage, general store, log cabin, and private firehouse. Plus, there are horse stables, a tennis court, and an airstrip. According to the Wall Street Journal, proceeds from the sale will be split among Epstein’s victims and creditors.

1. 85 Painter Ridge Rd, Roxbury, CT
Price: $3,495,000 Why it’s here: Ever wanted to live in a barn, without giving up any modern luxuries? Here’s your chance!
Once a dairy barn on Voytershark Farm, the circa-1960 building has been completely transformed into a 5,300-square-foot retreat just 90 minutes from New York City.
The two-story home has three bedrooms and 3.5 baths, and is set on 45 acres with rolling meadows, flower gardens, woods, and an orchard. Highlights include an exquisite tigerwood deck that extends from the eating area, for alfresco dining, and a spacious living area with floor-to-ceiling windows. The kitchen is equipped with a 10-burner stove and pizza oven, along with a breakfast bar. A 7,000-square-foot loft space could be used as an art studio, home office, or rec room.

2177 3rd Street Dogpatch, San Francisco

2177 3rd Street, Dogpatch in San Francisco

2177 3rd Street Dogpatch Residences
Architects: Woods Bagot
Location: San Francisco, California, USA
With its landmark living wall and Bay views, this new San Francisco residential building is inspired by the local landscape.
Images  by Scott Hargis Photo.
Light, air and transparency drove Woods Bagot’s design of this residential and retail building in the burgeoning Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco. Sited between a formerly industrial waterfront and busy 3rd Street, 2177 3rd Street offers floor to ceiling windows, views through the building to the water, and a spectacular green wall.
In spite of its 114 condominiums and 4,000 square-feet of retail, the seven-story building is designed to a human scale, balancing privacy and views. At midblock, a deep setback, framed by the five-storey living wall, introduces breathing space into the building’s bulk.
From the sidewalk, passers-by can see through the buildings to the verdant courtyard. The dark bronze of the façade takes its cues from the area’s industrial history: once the home of European immigrants, the Dogpatch was originally called “Dutchman’s Flat”. Today, recreation opportunities from the new Crane Cove park, with its restored shipping infrastructure, the bustle of Pier 70, and the Chase Center arena are attracting a new generation of San Franciscans.
A choreographed entry sequence takes residents and their guests through the main entry portal on 3rd Street, across a private pre-courtyard overlooked by residents’ co-working spaces, into the modernist lobby.  This graceful transition from the public to the private realm draws people through with its views out to the bay. A direct path leads from the building to the Bay via a newly-added private beach.
The main interior courtyard takes advantage of the mellow climate, inviting the outside in to the building’s core.  Floating above is a layered stack of pedestrian bridges, one per floor, that links the two sides of the building.  The courtyard-facing apartments enjoy private patios edged by open weave, Moroccan-inspired walls that balance light and privacy.
A shared materiality harmonizes the façade and the interior. The understated, gray flagstones in the lobby and extend into the first courtyard, harmonizing with pedestal pavers in the main courtyard. The warm bronze of the façade is picked up inside the lobby at the elevator doors and front desk.
The spacious lobby and owner’s lounge are fitted with a sophisticated palette of natural materials: Italian travertine walls, walnut wall slats basalt and marble; organic materials including custom Italian wood cabinetry and white marble countertops.   A window wall continues the theme of light and transparency, introducing San Francisco’s beloved natural light.
Other amenities include a rooftop lounge with couches, sleek firepits, and sweeping views of Downtown, the waterfront and Bay Bridge, and Crane Cove park; co-working space, a resident lounge with chef’s kitchen, a fitness center, a pet “spaw”, a bike workshop and generous storage space.
The residences offer open, thoughtfully designed floor plans, private balconies, 9-foot ceilings, natural finish materials and meticulous attention to detail.  Floor-to-ceiling windows usher in abundant natural night and present stunning vistas of the city’s downtown and waterfront while sliding glass doors open to private balconies and patios.
Glazed teal brick defines the street level retail spaces, which can adapt to changing uses over time. The larger southern space is big enough to be divided into discrete, smaller stores. The corner store has sliding glass windows, so can open entirely to the street.  A small terrace sits on the second level above the stores.
In addition to meeting California’s CEQA sustainability requirements, the project is pursuing LEED Gold certification.  San Francisco’s temperate climate means residents can enjoy passive ventilation, but additional cooling and heating is provided by energy-saving Variable Refrigerant Flow. Smart lighting and kitchen appliances reduce energy through residual heat utilization in ovens, gas cooktops.  Ecotech heat storage in the dishwashers also contributes to the eco-friendliness of 2177 Third Street.
