What You Need to Know About Garden Steps

Garden steps are not the same as the stairs inside your house. That’s probably the most important fact you need to know.

Even qualified architects sometimes make that mistake. So even if you have architects or hard landscapers installing your garden steps, it’s worth knowing the outlines of what ought to happen.

Once you know the important facts, you can have all the fun of choosing the design.

I adore these steps at Gravetye Manor in Sussex. Perhaps it’s the way they curve so invitingly upwards.

How steep can garden steps be?

The two terms you need to know are ‘riser’ and ‘tread.’ Unsurprisingly the riser is the vertical bit – it’s how high each individual step rises.

The ‘tread’ is the flat part of the step, where your foot lands.

Indoor stairs have a typical riser of 17-18cm with a tread of 22-24cm. They’re also required to have handrails, and there’s usually a wall to support you.

Risers for outdoor steps should be no more than 15cm high. Their tread should be 30cm deep. They often have no handrail or walls to support them, so they need to be easy to go up and down.

How many garden steps do I need?

Before you choose the style of your steps, you’ll need to work out how many you need as that affects your budget. Divide the total height between the two spaces you are connecting by 15cm if that’s your desired riser height. Or if you want lower, flatter outdoor steps, then you can have risers as low as 9-10cm.

The steps from our terrace to the main lawn. Writing this post has made me realise they are just a couple of centimetres too high. And now I think about it, they’re not as comfortable as the front steps, which are 12cm and 14cm high.

You can work out the total height by using a piece of string, either held by someone or tied down, on the higher level. Make sure it’s level!

For example, my garden has steps up from the terrace to the lawn. The lawn is 40cm (1ft4″) higher than the terrace. The steps were here when we moved in. And while writing this, I’ve discovered that the riser height is just under 20cm. It’s just a bit steep for comfort, although we are used to it. This is presumably because two steps with 20cm risers was more convenient than three steps at 9cm each.

Then work out how wide you want or need the steps to be. Usually, the wider the better if you want a spacious feel to the garden. And wide steps can also look wonderful if they’re flanked with pots.

And our steps are three pavers wide, so that’s a total of six pavers required.

Garden steps with gravel

If you want gravel steps, you’ll need a secure way of containing the gravel so it doesn’t wash away.

Even so, gravel heights change as bits of gravel get taken away on people’s shoes or the gravel settles. If that happens, you could find that the edge of the tread rises up, creating a small trip hazard.

Garden steps with stone

Stone is a beautiful, hard-wearing (and expensive) option. You can use granite, limestone, sandstone, Yorkstone or whinstone.

Choose from finely finished or roughly dressed. Take the thickness of the stone into consideration when calculating the riser measurements.

Formal stone steps in the Sunk Garden at Doddington Place Gardens (open Sundays and Wednesdays April-September). These steps are at least a hundred years old – stone really lasts.

You can also have stone-effect pavers made with concrete or other man-made materials. Check that they’re suitable for outdoor steps before ordering them.

These steps in my garden have brick risers and sandstone treads.

Brick steps

There are lots of bricks that are manufactured for steps. They are hard-wearing and frost-proof. So when choosing bricks, check whether they’re suitable for steps.

And consider the architecture of your home when choosing brick steps. In the UK we have yellow bricks and red bricks, so bear that in mind when choosing which colour brick you want for your steps.

These beautiful brick steps are over 100 years old. They have now been repaired, but I rather love this romantic dilapidation.

Timber garden steps

There are two problems with timber steps. Timber rots over time and it gets slippy in the wet. However, if you’re happy to keep a close eye on maintenance, it’s a budget-friendly option, especially if you install it yourself.

People used to buy railway sleepers for steps, but this is now not recommended because of the levels of creosote.

Garden steps for steep slopes

It’s generally considered a good idea to break up a very long run of garden steps. If you can design in a ‘landing’ or have a ramp for some of the distance, it will look better and be more comfortable to climb. Ramps should rise at a gradient of 1:12. That means they should rise one metre over every twelve metres.

There are steep slopes at Gravetye Manor in Sussex, so these steps are broken up by lengths of ramp to make them easier and more comfortable to climb.

More garden step ideas

Mark out steps with statues or sculpture. This is Philip Oostenbrink’s garden in Ash, Kent, open twice a year for the NGS.

Or use wide garden steps to display pots as seen in Robin Grimble’s garden. It often opens for Faversham Open Gardens on the last Sunday in June every year.

More shallow steps at Le Jardin Agapanthe in Northern France. The stone closely matches the shade of the sand they are set in.

Garden step safety

A single garden step can be a trip hazard if people don’t see it easily. Consider using a contrasting material so that people can see it more easily.

This single step is clearly marked by a change of use in the materials. Seen in the Glimpse of South East Asia Garden at BBC Gardeners World Live.

You don’t necessarily need handrails for garden steps, but they can be designed in to go with the garden.

When Robin and Margaret Marks added a handrail to their front garden steps, they made it part of the design by painting it the theme colour for their house and garden. It looks great.

If you’re accessing the garden via stairs – for example, you reach a basement garden from a ground floor door – then you can treat those as ‘indoor stairs’. But with risers of 18cm, they need banisters and handrails!

And when stone or concrete pavers are being installed as steps, check the overhang. That’s the tiny amount of paver that juts out over the riser. If there is too big an overhang, and the steps aren’t securely fixed, then the paver could flip up when you tread on it. It doesn’t often happen, but it would be a nasty accident if it did.

Here I sit outside the airport in Dubai, UAE! After catastrophe due to my own stupidity, here I am in this beautiful, strange, and incredibly HOT paradise in the middle of a desert. What a day it has been. I sit here because I need to let my shoes dry off so I can properly shake all the sand out of them! This day has surely been an adventure. I boarded my flight out of Kathmandu to leave at 8am (after triple-checking the time). I was forced to sit in business class (luckily, unluckily? More on that later…) the sky was cloudy so we had a bit of a bumpy take-off but we flew up above the clouds and I had the most beautiful view! Below us was a floor of clouds and above us was a bright blue morning sky. Then, above the clouds peeked the most beautiful snow-capped mountains I have ever seen! They stretched high above the cloud-floor and I could see snow blowing around on the peaks. The mountains got larger and taller and were suddenly on both sides of us. It was like in a dream. I could swear that I caught a glimpse of Mt. Everest that I so desperately wanted to see last time I was in Nepal. It was a scene hard to describe in words and harder to capture an image of. For the most of the remaining time I was peering out the window at flat uninhabited desert, leading up to touch-down in Dubai. I told myself that all I truly desired to see on this 10 hour layover was Burj Khalifa, tallest building in the world with 200 floors and home to the Sheikh of UAE. I looked in advance and braced myself for a long metro ride or an expensive taxi ride. Luckily, neither were in store for me! How you may ask? Well in chatting with a flight attendant during my flight, talking about how I am going to Kazakhstan and going to be waiting 10 hours in Dubai. He told that he could drive me around if I wanted, since he lives in Dubai and had his car at the airport! Well….i am almost never one to go for jaunts with strange men, especially in foreign lands (maybe I have an irrational fear of being kidnapped or just a healthy suspicion of overly eager men…) WELL I figured, not sure using what logic, but what’s the worst that could happen?? He gave me his phone number and agreed to meet at the departure terminal outside the airport as soon as he could change out of his attendant uniform. Sure enough, he pulled up and I hopped in his car (sure enough, if you are reading this, you know I am now safe and it all worked out). His name was Vishwa And he is a 31-yr old man from Sri Lanka. He also told me about his wife and child, who were on vacation in her home country of China. He was quite kind and I enjoyed talking with him about life, school, and politics. He drove me first to Burj Khalifa, since this was my original goal. We parked at the Dubai mall and walked through, once of the fanciest malls I have ever seen. I have been to a handful of classy malls, but surely none that had an ice rink, a huge three-story screen playing ads, and an aquarium! Apparently they have the highest volume aquarium tank in the world, which I saw, and the longest crocodile in the world, which I missed. After being awed by the walls of fountains and the sparkling marble floors, we came to an outdoor seating area with a nice view of Burj Khalifa. It’s quite a structure to witness in person….I had to squint into the sun to see the top! We then waited to see the dancing fountain, which is a massive pool at the foot off the Burj Khalifa. Booming Arabic music played as I witnessed the most extravagant dancing fountain I have ever seen (and I am no stranger to dancing fountains!). Then we drove around to find a place to eat lunch. Unfortunately the Thai noodle place was closed and we settled for a French café. After discussing how many USD = AED, I realized I had withdrawn 163$ worth of AED from an ATM when I was planning on getting enough cash for just a casual lunch 😳😳 oops! Being an airhead is exhausting from time to time! Vishwa Bought me a nice lunch (plus two slices of cake – what to do with these now??) He was quite a gentleman, holding doors open for me and pulling out my chair at the restraint. I am unsure if this is a Sri Lankan thing, a classy Dubai thing, a flight attendant thing? Anyway, the restaurant we went to was near a beach, and naturally I wanted to touch the water. He told me we could drive to a beach closer to Burj Al-Arab, another very famous building in Dubai. He took pictures for me and I frolicked in the warm water of the Arabian Sea, which was a lovely greenish blue. I nearly lost my shoe in the waves as I tried to wash the sand off so as not to dirty Vishwa's car. I picked up a sea shell too. I wished to spend more time laying on the beach and reading, but on to our next spot, which was a twisty skyscraper, next to a building that apparently was famous for people jumping off of it with parachutes. Sufficiently pleased having seen many of the the most iconic sights in Dubai, we drove back to the airport with still about 4 hours to spare. Now here I am, still waiting for my shoes to dry off to get rid of the last of the sand. What will come first? My next flight or dry shoes?

I will conclude to say that Dubai is a very weird city, full of very rich people and very poor people. There were hardly any people at all on the streets and outside of some very tall and shiny buildings, there is not much. An odd time to be in Dubai, though, because it is the last Friday – day of prayer for Muslims – before Ramadan. At least I was not here during Ramadan - I learned that it is possible to be fined if you are seen even drinking water in the day on the street during the month of Ramadan!!! Maybe I will be back someday during Ramadan to see what this holy month is actually like in the Middle East.

Trips to the rural communities will become popular, and travelers are likely to be more interested in private guides that teach them about the traditional ways of life.”

Natural language processing (NLP) helps computers understand human speech or typing, and AI then applies machine learning to provide a useful response.

Advito reveals that the travel industry is “well-positioned to embrace AI,” and also that the wider travel industry is adopting AI as, for example, KLM passengers are now able to use Facebook Messenger to confirm bookings, get boarding passes and flight status updates. “AI is still in its infancy, but it is in our immediate future,” the report asserts. “As it develops, it will help simplify complex travel decisions, shorten the buying process and deliver a more personalized offering.”
