As More Australians Migrate to the Coast, Development Follows On the coast of Western Australia, the city of Busselton awaits the arrival of a 3,000-ton whale made of concrete and steel, breaching from the depths of the Indian Ocean. The leviathan is part of a marine observation center, the Australian Underwater Discovery Centre, a project that cost 30 million Australian dollars, about $23 million, and was designed by Baca Architects and Subcon, a marine contractor. Situated at the end of the Busselton Jetty, a city attraction, it will be Australia’s largest natural marine observatory when it opens in December 2022. The multilevel structure, which will offer art and science exhibits while allowing visitors to marvel at life beneath the surface of the ocean, is the latest example of a new rush of developments steadily cropping up around Australia’s coastline to entertain locals and draw international visitors. Coastal developments in Australia are nothing new. Beach culture is part of the national identity, and more than 80 percent of the country’s population resides in coastal zones. But population growth has led to an uptick in coastal projects, and experts say the pandemic is only accelerating the trend. After years of lagging, commercial development is picking up, said Mark Coster, head of capital markets for the Pacific at CBRE, a commercial real estate analysis firm. “Over the last few years, there’s been significant infrastructure spend along the coasts, and that’s been spurred by population growth and a lack of spending for much of the last decade,” he said. That is certainly the case in Busselton — a city of 40,000 about two and a half hours south of Perth. It has steadily grown and is expected to be one of the country’s hottest property markets. Development has followed suit: The marine center, an airport expansion, arts center, open-air market, a Hilton Hotel and a shoreline project are all under construction. The whale-like structure will be opposite the existing observatory, which struggled to accommodate the 700,000 visitors it received on average in the years before the pandemic. Rather than remove the old observatory, officials will turn it into a working science lab and ocean conservation education center. “This new center is an investment in our local community, and hopefully we’ll be able to share it with people from around the globe soon,” said Lisa Shreeve, chief executive of Busselton Jetty. “There’s something here for everyone.” Through strict lockdowns, Australia has managed the pandemic well, with lower Covid-19 infection and death rates than many comparable developing countries, according to a report released in December by McKinsey & Company. “Its economic downturn during the pandemic has also been less pronounced than in many comparable economies,” the report said. But that hasn’t stopped migration shifts, especially the growing attraction of leaving major cities for coastal enclaves. On the East Coast, both Sydney and Melbourne registered population losses last year as people flocked to coastal and regional towns, seeking solace and space. “Covid has fast-forwarded Australians’ desire to be closer to the water and the result is that smaller but high-amenity towns are booming,” Mr. Coster said. It is unlikely that net population loss from major cities will persist, but analysts predict that cities and towns around the coast will continue to grow. The shift toward remote work is only aiding that, Mr. Coster said. “We’re in the midst of a lifestyle shift movement, and we’re going to see a lot more projects in these areas,” he said. Described as a “fusion between science, engineering and art” by Kim Mayberry, the city’s projects coordinator, the underwater site will include nine sculptures up to 65 feet high, akin to slender trees, tethered on the ocean floor. The structures will move in the warm currents and over time become covered in corals and seaweed, which will attract marine life. The effort is an attempt to diversify the city’s tourism beyond amusement parks and surf. It is expected to inject more than 30 million Australian dollars into the local economy in its first 10 years, according to the city. Smaller civic spaces geared toward their communities are also experiencing a moment. Found on most major beaches, the shore patrol pavilions known as Surf Life Saving Clubs were once overlooked as utilitarian buildings full of gear like surfboards and boats with maybe a club room or bar. Inside is a mix of functional and social spaces including a cafe and bar that spills outside in the warmer months. “It’s now more of a community hub than a traditional lifesaving venue,” Mr. Wood said. The development model is being used around the country, with further lifesaving clubs, communal promenades and pavilions slated for redevelopment. Both types of commercial projects — from the smaller, more community-oriented to the tourist draws — are likely to play a part in the recovery of Australia’s “blue economy,” which is worth 70 billion to 100 billion Australian dollars a year, generated from ocean industries ranging from fishing to tourism. In Australia, the tourism industry has spent the better part of two years in hibernation with international tourists discouraged from traveling during the 2019-2020 bush fire season and then all but barred from entering because of the pandemic. To drive a recovery, tourism operators and developers will continue to create coastal attractions and developments that are both attractive and environmentally sustainable. Broadly speaking, coastal developments have improved in Australia as the commercial real estate industry works more closely with other sectors such as the science community, said Dr. Beth Fulton, senior principal research scientist at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Australia’s national science agency. “In the last decade, there has been more cross-collaboration, which means we are heading in the right direction from a development perspective,” she said. Synopsis

Harry is having his house redecorated and needs a place to stay. Naturally, he imposes on Lucy, who is increasingly aggravated by her brother-in-law's obnoxious habits. Rather than ask him to leave, she schemes with Kim to get him to leave on his own accord.

Autuori introduces the episode on the series DVD. In the episode, he wears a cardigan sweater monogrammed G.R.

Robert Foulk (Poker Player #3, right) played the policeman on the Brooklyn subway platform in “Lucy and the Loving Cup” (ILL S6;E12) and a Los Angeles Detective in “Lucy Goes To A Hollywood Premiere” (TLS S4;E20). This is the second of his six characters on “Here’s Lucy,” two which were policemen.

Frank J. Scannell (Poker Player #4, center) played the Burlesque Comic (“Slowly I turn...”) in “The Ballet” (ILL S1;E19). He had done two films with Lucille Ball in 1945, including Lover Come Back. This is his only appearance on “Here's Lucy.”

Vince Barnett (Cabbie #1) appeared with Lucille Ball in one of her first films, The Affairs of Cellini in 1934. He also appeared with her in A Girl, A Guy, and a Gob in 1941. This is his only series appearance.

Sid Gould (Cabbie #2) made more than 45 appearances on “The Lucy Show,” and nearly as many on “Here’s Lucy.” Gould (born Sydney Greenfader) was Lucille Ball’s cousin by marriage to Gary Morton.

Eugene Molnar (Tuba Player) appeared on four episodes of the series. These are his only screen credits.

Molnar has no dialogue. The character is part of a 12-piece marching band that appears in full uniform. The band is uncredited.

Anthony and Cleopatra are Harry's pet parakeets.

Willy the Goat is the mascot of Kim's college.

Charles Walters makes his series directing debut with this episode. He directed Lucille Ball in five motion pictures between 1942 and 1945. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1953 for directing Lili. He will direct one more episode of “Here's Lucy” as well as the Lucille Ball television movies “Three for Two” (1975) and “What Now, Catherine Curtis” (1976), which was his final screen credit. He died in 1982 at the age of 70.

Sid Gould (Cabbie #2), Robert Foulk (Poker Player #3), and Emile Autuori (Poker Player #3) all appeared in the previous week's episode “Lucy and the Raffle” (S3;E19). This is the second episode in a row in which Desi Arnaz Jr. does not appear. Lucy says he is on vacation for two weeks.

This episode was filmed on September 17, 1970. “The Flip Wilson Show” (aka “Flip”) premiered that evening on NBC. Flip Wilson will play himself in the season 4 opener of “Here's Lucy.” In return, Lucy appears on “Flip.” Both shows ended their runs in early 1974.

Harry balks at paying $40 a day for a hotel room in Los Angeles overlooking the park. “For $40 a day I should overlook Fort Knox!” Both Harry and Mr. Mooney were fond of punchlines that featured Fort Knox, a Kentucky military installation that is the repository for most of the nation's gold reserves. In today's money, considering inflation, $40 a day is the equivalent of spending $250 a day; not unreasonable in greater Los Angeles.

Trying to ingratiate himself to Lucy to get her to allow him to stay in her home while his house is being renovated, Harry greets her cheerfully, coyly asking about “dear Kim” and “little Craig.” Lucy says that 'little' Craig is 5'11” and shaves. 'Little Craig' is absent from this episode.

Moving in to Lucy's house, Harry brings his parakeets Anthony and Cleopatra. These are the names of real-life historical figures that also are featured in Shakespeare's play Anthony and Cleopatra. Lucy Carmichael played Cleopatra for the Danfield Community Theatre in 1963.

Harry’s suitcases are packed with his John Philip Sousa records. He calls them The Tijuana Brass of his generation. John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was a composer hailed as “The March King.” His music was extensively used in “Lucy Goest to the Air Force Academy” Parts 1 and 2. The Tijuana Brass was a modern jazz group led by Herb Alpert. They had numerous hit records from 1962 to 1969, when they disbanded. In “Lucy and the Bogie Affair” (S2;E13) in 1969, Kim has a photo of Herb Alpert posted inside her school locker!

Harry leads Lucy and Kim through morning exercises to “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” which was written by Sousa in 1897. It is considered his most famous work and was declared the officially march of the United States of America in 1987. The tempo is sped up a bit on the soundtrack to add to the comedy of the scene.

When Lucy bemoans Harry turning her home into a gambling joint with the arrival of Harry's poker pals, Kim says “Maybe we could sell out to Howard Hughes.” The real life millionaire aviator was mentioned on several previous episodes, including the very first “Lucy Visits Jack Benny” (S1;E1). In the 1960s Howard Hughes went on a spending spree and bought several Las Vegas casino hotels, including the Desert Inn and the Sands, the setting of a 1958 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”

In light of his poker game, Lucy calls Harry Nick the Greek. Nicholas Andrea Dandolos (1883 -1966), aka Nick the Greek, was a was a professional gambler and high roller from Rethymnon, Crete. He was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1979.

Harry's decorator is named Poindexter. On the telephone, Lucy mistakes him for a her.

Kim suggest checking Emily Post for a polite way to get rid of an unwanted house guest. Emily Post (1872-1960) was a writer who's name has become synonymous with proper etiquette and manners. More than half a century after her death, her name is still used in titles of etiquette books.

When the marching band startles awake Harry, Lucy is trying to look nonchalant by reading a magazine. It is Sunset, a monthly lifestyle magazine that focuses on homes, cooking, gardening, and travel, with a focus almost exclusively on the Western United States. It was first published in 1898 and still is in circulation today.

Harry has fallen asleep reading Boating, a magazine for boat enthusiasts. It began publication in 1966 and is still in print today. Harry is a boat enthusiast who decorates his home and office with model ships and paintings of vessels.

Harry is allergic to Willy the Goat – and all long-haired animals. This is consistent with “Lucy and the Bogie Affair” (S2;E13, above) where we learn that Harry is allergic to dogs.

As Harry is finally is finally about to leave, Lucy has a horrible thought: what if Harry is like Sheridan Whiteside in the play The Man Who Came to Dinner and falls on his way out and must stay with them even longer? The play, by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, was a comedy that opened on Broadway in 1939. It starred Lucille Ball's good friend (and “Here's Lucy” performer) Mary Wickes as Nurse Preen. Wickes was one of several stage actors who recreated their roles in the 1942 film adaptation.

This episode is similar to “Lucy's Mystery Guest” (TLS S6;E10), where Lucy Carmichael's Aunt Agatha (Mary Wickes) turns up on her doorstep and turns her life upside down with exercise at dawn, a health food regimen, and wardrobe requirements.

Gale Gordon also put Lucy and a pal through their paces with vigorous exercise in “Lucy and the Countess Lose Weight” (TLS S3;E21) in which Mr. Mooney helps out at a fat farm to keep the bank from foreclosing and recruits Lucy and the Countess as members.

Party in the Kitchen! Harry's poker pals head into the kitchen for their game, despite the fact that Lucy has a green felt-lined card table in the living room!

Where the Ceiling Begins! When Harry is leading the morning exercises, the camera pulls back for a long shot and the top of the living room set is visible on the right, with a loop of cable hanging down.

SOLAR Design Statement:

Located within the walls of the heritage listed Newtown Tramshed, Solar is a Civic Bathing Pavilion, where water, plants and natural light are curated to create an oscillating space of leisure and relaxation. Combining natural water purification systems with new energy saving technology, Solar offers a healthier and more sustainable alternative to public pools and spas.

The major design considerations that informed my process included the wider environmental impact, the local context, the heritage of the site, and notions of wellbeing.

In reflecting on the relationship with our individual wellbeing and the greater universe, my original layout was inspired by the solar system, with different areas responding to the eight planets, informing colour, texture and lines within the design. This loaded concept resulted in multiple competing spaces and activities and proved too busy and distracting from the overall atmosphere I was trying to create. In adapting my design I removed the specific zoned planet areas, concentrating on the focal point, which was that everything would revolve around the sun. This was represented by maintaining an open plan design anchored by a central glass circular staircase and dome stretching from the ground to the top floor.

In deciding on what well being activity or philosophy my space would respond to, I went directly to my personal appreciation of bathing and particularly the lack of affordable facilities that responded to both the physical activity of swimming and the relaxation of a spa experience. I was also interested in the particular socialising aspect that occurs in spaces reserved for simple activities like bathing, and how this combination can benefit well being, as it has done in different cultures for generations around the world. Relaxation and health attributes of pools, spas, saunas, and steam rooms are well documented and remain very popular. There are however two main issues I noted with the majority of these private and public facilities including firstly their un-sustainability, specifically in water use and heating costs, and secondly the heavy use of antiseptic chemicals. I addressed these issues in Solar by incorporating the natural water purification system using plants, zooplankton and layers of gravel and sand to filter the water, offering an alternative more sustainable, affordable and healthier chemical free setup. To further increase the buildings energy self-sufficiency, solar panels were included as a feature on the second floor, lining the expansive rooftop space, surrounding and contrasting the intimate circular bar.

The building materials were also chosen for their sustainability and longevity. As the majority of the space was designed with a brutalist concrete aesthetic, Ashcrete was incorporated as an alternative, where 97% of traditional components in concrete can be replaced with recycled materials. Mycelium, a new mushroom insulation was also chosen, as well as laminated insulating glass. Gold tinted glass mirror coats the bathroom blocks, providing warmth, multiplying the appearance of plants, and bouncing light around back into the space. Inside the bathroom and saunas are lined with a locally sourced softwood adding comfort and practicality, and if possible recycled Rosso Portogallo marble is included for the cafe and bar countertops marking the eating areas with salmon coloured accents.

Finally, as much of the original structure was maintained as possible, including the brick walls and concrete walkway, with recycled steel framework mimicking the original beams and tying the new and old elements together.

The decision to refurbish the original building and add only a few consistent materials was an important design strategy, allowing the light and respective shadow to take centre stage playing off minimal surfaces. It also highlights the action of water, plants and people to enliven a minimal space of few material. Solar works with the existing building materials to create a balanced space embracing the wabi-sabi philosophy of transience and imperfection. Highlighting the original buildings instead of masking it allows a reflective emphasise on old and new, and a more sustainable approach to building.

Another important element of the bath house that I wanted to play with was the aspect of social and private space. The large open cafe area on ground level and the rooftop bar allow people to spend extended amounts of time at Solar, complimenting their bathing experience or as a singular activity. The little seating nooks and sauna enclosures allow for some intimacy within the expansive space.

Wider environmental context was a major design consideration throughout the whole process, predominantly analysing the effect of natural light from sun paths moon and stars, as well as air pollution and airflow patterns.

Further design considerations of the local context included if there were any other similar facilities such as pools, spas or saunas in the area, and the effect on neighbours both residential and non-residential. Potentialising the urban context was very important, by considering accessibility, surrounding noise, and also access to views which many people don’t get in that area. In particular the Solar rooftop bar was included to appreciate the North-East cityscape, Eastern coastline, and North, South and Western suburban sprawl.

Solar aims to create a sustainable alternative to, and combination of the popular public pool, and private spa. Accessible to people of all ages and socio-economic status, the space provides for different interests and abilities, with several areas supporting varied leisure and activity. Solar focuses on mental and physical wellbeing through exercise, relaxation, indulgence, and socialising. The centre will of course serve the immediate community, however considering the incredible accessibility of the location right next to the trainline, the space is designed to attract the wider sydney, national and international community, and set an example for sustainable urban bathhouses.

Kol is sipping a margarita, splayed out on one of the leather couches in their lounge room when she gets back from her shopping expedition in New Orleans.

The radio is on, playing one of those inane pop tunes that Kol for some reason seemed to love, and his foot is swaying lazily to the beat as he stares up at the fan whirring lazily on the ceiling above them.

“What on Earth are you doing?” She asks of Kol, whose eyes flick towards her, a self satisfied smile creeping across his face when he sees her.

“Celebrating.” Kol says with great relish, taking a sip of his margarita. “Can I offer you a drink, sister?”

“Knowing you you’ve probably spiked it with some sort of sleeping potion, so it’ll be a hard pass this time.” She replies with disdain, remembering the last time Elijah had accepted a drink from Kol, and had then promptly broken out in hives that had taken quite a few days to disappear, and only with the assistance of a witch that owed Elijah quite a few favours.

Kol had ended up with a dagger in his chest for a month before Elijah had deigned to make amends with him.

“God you’re all no fun.” Kol mumbles under his breath, sitting up on the couch and planting his booted feet on the floor. “And since you never asked what I was celebrating, I’m going to tell you anyway.”

“Of course you are.” She remarks dryly, tapping her foot against the floor, cursing the humidity that seemed to hang over New Orleans at this time of the year like an unpleasant shroud.

Already she can feel her hair sticking to the back of her neck, her clothes pressing to her skin unpleasantly. Maybe she could go for a swim a little later.

“Well, as you well know Bekah, Nik’s birthday is coming up. And I know that we all try and one up each other when it comes to buying him a gift. God knows why considering how many times he’s daggered us all… If anything he should be buying us presents to make up for it.” Kol is just thinking out loud now, and she can’t help but sigh, massaging her temples.

In fact, Nik had brought her plenty of gifts to make up for the whole daggering thing, knowing that she was materialistic at heart and was far more likely to respond positively to that than murmured platitudes and constant apologies.

She wouldn’t give up her designer wardrobe, villa in Tuscany, and private island for anything.

“Get to the point.” She snarls as Kol continues to mumble under his breath.

“Fine. I just want to tell you and Elijah that you shouldn’t bother trying this year, because I’ve got him the present to end all presents. The perfect gift.”

“You do?” She asks incredulously, because Kol’s idea of a perfect gift is usually a stripper or a gift voucher to some obscure store.

“I do.” Kol says with another smug smile. “So just don’t even go there this year Bekah. You’re not going to beat me!”

With that, Kol drains the rest of his margarita, falling back to lie on the couch once more.

Justin Bieber starts playing on the radio, and as she marches out of the room to escape the stupidity of the song, an idea begins to form in her mind.

Kol wasn’t going to know what hit him.

“I could get used to this.” Caroline Forbes remarks with a laugh, reclining on the pure white sand as the sun beats fiercely down on her skin.

“I’m not sure about the heat.” Enzo has propped himself up on her elbow next to her, Ray Bans covering most of his features as he takes in the crystalline blue water. “Although it is a beautiful corner of the world.”

She’d been dying to come to Australia for some time now, and she and Enzo had spent the last few months wandering the massive island continent. As she very quickly discovered, there was so much more to Australia than the cosmopolitan city of Sydney.

They went dune boarding at Port Stephens, a little coastal town three hours north east of the capital of NSW. They spent a week on the Gold Coast, checking out the bars and clubs that peppered the famous city.

They spent another week on a cattle ranch in the far flung part of Queensland that no one else ever seemed to go to, made friends with the locals as they had to revert back to animal blood momentarily.

The Northern Territory was amazing, as had been Western Australia. The Barossa Valley had been a favourite, rich wine country with vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see.

Enzo had loved Melbourne, loved the coffee culture and all the hip little laneway bars that were only discovered if you stumbled across them by accident. Someone had suggested the Whitsundays for their next destination, and after looking at some pictures online she and Enzo had very quickly booked one of the resorts there.

The past few days had been spent snorkelling on the Great Barrier reef, reclining on the deck of the sailboat they had hired, swimming in clear blue waters, and sampling some of the amazing food at the various restaurants dotted around the island.

She thanked her lucky stars that she technically couldn’t put on weight now that she was dead and all, so had absolutely no guilt about helping herself to a second or third plate of food at dinner time, washing it down with some wine.

“That it is.” She agrees quietly with Enzo, sipping at her bottle of water, watching clouds scud across the cornflower blue sky.

Someone whistles at them from the shore line, and she raises her hand in acknowledgement towards the skipper of their boat, sitting up and beginning to gather her belongings, shoving them back into the canvas beach bag she carried with her.

She dusts the sane off her as she and Enzo make their way over to the boat, ankle deep in the cool water before they're being handed up onto the deck.

When she gets back to their room, she’s surprised to see an envelope addressed to her. She hadn’t given anyone an address while she’d been travelling, and so she approaches the envelope with a healthy dose of caution.

Picking it up between two fingers, she gingerly breaks the wax seal on the back, pulling out the parchment within and unfolding it quickly.

Caroline,

My brother is celebrating his birthday this year. Although I’m not particularly eager to see you anytime soon, I know that Nik would like it. Details are within.

Rebekah

She can’t help but cover her mouth, snorting with laughter as she hands the folded up piece of paper to Enzo to read.

“Rather direct, isn’t she?”

“Yes, that always has been her m.o.” She replies with another soft laugh, eyes scanning the contents of the invitation before tossing it onto the bed.

“So are you going to go?” Enzo questions curiously, leaning over to read the invitation as well.

“I don’t know. Maybe?” She answers it like a question, becuase to be honest she's still not half sure herself.

Enzo raises an eyebrow at that.

“Maybe? That's a complete 180 from last year when it was a flat out no. Could it be that your feelings towards the big bad hybrid have changed?”

She hits Enzo on the arm good naturedly.

“It’s not like that. It’ll just be… good to see him.” She trails off lamely, knowing that it's a pathetic excuse if ever she's heard one.

To be honest, she'd been thinking about Klaus a lot more lately. She hadn't seen him in almost a decade, the last time being quite a memorable weekend they’d spent together in Tuscany, when they hadn’t done much more than have sex and drink wine from teh surrounding vineyards.

Most of the weekend had been spent in bed, Klaus determined to show her just how good they were with each other, which they were. Klaus continued to be the best sex of her lfie, and if the infuriating smile that he wore on his face every time he brought her to climax was anything to go by, he knew it as well.

But they both had other priorities. She was content to continue her nomadic lifestyle, discovering some of the far flung and forgotten corners of the world, Enzo in tow more often than not.

Klaus had settled into his life in New Orleans, ruling the city with an iron fist, his siblings still with him.

She’d never been. Setting foot into his city would be sending a message, that she was willing to entertain the idea of a forever with him. And she hadn’t been ready for that yet. But now…

“I can see that your mind has already been made up.” Enzo replies with a slow smile. “Are you sure?”

She just takes a deep breath, squaring her shoulders.

“I’m going to need a dress.”

The party below them is in full swing, members of the supernatural community mingling in the courtyard below them.

Kol leans on the balcony beside her, hair swept artfully away from his forehead, tuxedo clinging to the firm lines of his body. He sips at his drink, glancing at her for a moment.

“Did you even try to get him something this year?” He asks with a chuckle. “You’ve been surprisingly tight lipped this year sister.”

She smooths down the front of her black party dress, raising her own glass to her lips as she takes a drink.

“I tried something different this year. Apparently it didn’t work out.” She notes with a shrug, downing the rest of her drink and setting the now empty glass on the tray of a passing waiter.

Kol stares at her for a long moment, trying to figure out the meaning behind her words.

“Shame.” He pronounces with a shrug. “You’re usually much better at this. Did you order something online and it didnt’ arrive on time or something?”

She just smiles to herself, phone buzzing in her hand.

“Something like that.”

And then she thumbs into the message, reading the two words displayed across her screen.

She’s here.

The doorman of course, had been under strict instructions to keep an eye out for Caroline. He’d been provided with a picture of the baby vampire, one from her Mystic Falls days where she’d been polished and primped and wearing a ballgown.

All the same, Caroline Forbes was rather hard to miss, even dressed in plain clothes with her hair in disarray. She would know because she’d seen the girl in such a state during one memorable run in at the MIkaelson mansion in Mystic Falls.

It hadn’t taken a genius to know exactly why Caroline was doing the walk of shame at such an infernal hour of the morning. The younger girl had blushed, hair falling into her face as she had whispered a soft goodbye before letting herself out into the weak early morning light.

She had mentioned this as an aside to Kol, who had promptly teased Nik about it. Nik had snapped his neck and they hadn’t mentioned it since.

“Am I boring you?” Kol’s voice abruptly interrupts her train of thought, and she locks her phone, eyes flicking up towards her brother, who’s staring at her like she’s just grown a second head. “Where did you go just now?”

She just draws herself up to her full height, snagging another flute of champagne.

“Don’t count your chickens before they hatch brother.”

The doorman is staring at her strangely. She can’t imagine why, because she most certainly does not have lipstick on her teeth (she checked). The navy blue party dress that she’s wearing makes her tanned legs look a mile long, and accentuates the curves of her body.

Her hair, which she had spent a ridiculous amount of time on, was twisted into an elegant up do, and she was wearing a necklace that Klaus had gifted to her during their time in Tuscany.

The short of it was, she looked a million bucks.

“Caroline Forbes.” A voice drawls as she steps into the entrance of the courtyard.

Rebekah Mikaelson hasn’t changed a bit, that bored expression on her face ever present. She’s wearing a killer pair of Manolos and she can’t help but eye off the striking shoes with a bit of jealousy.

“Rebekah.” She finally answers, swallowing around the lump in her throat as Rebekah just smiles, pressing a drink into her hand.

“I didn’t think you were going to come.” Rebekah sips at her own drink as she turns, moving more towards the crowd of people, a few of whom eye them off with barely concealed curiosity. “You know, since I didn’t receive your RSVP or anything like that.”

“Sorry.” She replies to the older vampire, smoothing a hand over her hair. “I was undecided until quite recently. I did send word but apparently you didn’t get the message in time.”

“No matter.” Rebekah waves a hand dismissively. “You’re here now and that’s all that matters.”

Rebekah tilts her gaze upwards towards the balcony, and she follows the line of the Original’s gaze. Kol Mikaelson has a drink in her hand, and is gaping at her with his mouth hanging open rather unattractively.

Within split seconds his gaze lands on Rebekah, eyes narrowing as he raises his drink towards his sister in a toast for some reason.

“What was that about?” She asks Rebekah, who lifts one shoulder in an elegant shrug as the crowd clears momentarily and she spots Klaus from across the room.

He looks entirely at ease in this particular setting, his tuxedo clinging sharply to the lines of his broad shoulders, pants tailored to within an inch of their life. He’s got his head thrown back in laughter as he talks to another man, drink in hand and looking like he doesn’t have a care in the world.

“What on earth has he done to his hair?” She hisses towards Rebekah in horror. “It looks atrocious.”

She sees Klaus stiffen at that, and curses his superior Hybrid hearing as his gaze suddenly lands on her, eyes dark.

It’s perhaps the first time that she’s seen him truly caught off guard, and she can’t help but raise her glass to her lips, not realising just how much liquid courage she’d need to fortify herself with for this particular encounter.

The crowd seems to part before Klaus as he moves towards her, Rebekah giving her a gentle nudge, encouraging her to meet him halfway.

If that wasn’t a metaphor for their relationship, she didn’t know what was.

Klaus stops before her, gaze indecipherable as he reaches out, traces a gentle hand along her cheekbone.

The weight of the curious gazes around her is heavy, and she can’t help but lean into his touch as he bends, taking her hand in his, pressing a gentle kiss to it.

He straightens, and his smile is like the sun.

“Hello Caroline.”

It feels strange, being on Klaus’ arm. For a moment, she can’t help but think that Klaus is showing her off, demonstrating his power.

Until he begins introducing her to people, a hand resting dangerously on her lower back, thumb rubbing circles into where her dress does not cover up the skin of her back.

He seems content to take a backseat in their conversation, instead observing silently as she exchanges greetings with various witches and werewolves and vampires.

She sips at her drink as someone else comes to greet Klaus, and it takes a moment for her to realise why this time is so different. Klaus isn’t treating her like an object. He never has, a byproduct of his thousand or so years of existence.

No. Klaus is treating her like an equal, and the thought of that sends a thrill down her spine. So when there’s a break in the conversation she twines an arm around his waist, pressing a quick kiss to his neck.

In response Klaus pulls her closer to him but doesn’t comment, carrying on his conversation effortlessly.

Hours later as the guests begin to filter out into the street, Klaus pulls her in close to her chest.

“What are you doing here Caroline?” He asks in a low voice, tone dangerous. “Not that I’m not happy to see you, of course I am.”

She meets his gaze confidently, hand drifting up his chest to fix the lapel of his dinner jacket.

“I’m here for you Klaus.” She tells him with a smile. “You remember that weekend in Tuscany, when you let me go without a word of protest?”

Klaus’ lips curl into a smirk.

“How could I forget Tuscany?”

“You didn’t push me. And I was grateful for that, even though I did know that you wouldn’t wait around forever for me. And when you kept your distance in the following years, I was grateful. But I also missed not having you around.”

Her eyes drop to the crisp lines of his shirt as her hands drift down towards his waist. His breath is hot against her cheek, and he’s gone unnaturally still as he waits to hear the next words out of her mouth.

“You offered me forever and I wasn’t ready then. But I am now.” She says softly, hands sliding up his chest, twining around his neck as his gaze darkens, mouth hanging open in surprise. “If you’ll still have me of course.

Klaus’ lips against hers is the only answer he provides, the only answer she needs. Klaus kisses her like he’s a starving man, like he’s been deprived of something for so long.

She’s scarcely less eager to return his embrace, missing the feeling of him, the familiar smell of him.

She doesn’t protest when Klaus picks her up in his arms, using his vamp speed to get the from the courtyard to what is undoubtedly his bedroom.

He’s got her pressed up against the closed door before she can even think about it, lips hot against the skin of her neck as he nips at her with a content sigh.

His jacket drops to the floor, and she helps him unbutton his shirt, no doubt in her mind as to the direction that this is heading.

Her hands roam over the skin of his chest, catalouging all the new scars that he’s acquired since she saw him last, hand pausing over a particularly nasty looking scar, no doubt caused by some sort of stabbing.

“You’ll have to tell me that story later.” She murmurs, tipping a finger under his chin and kissing him gently.

“Later.” Klaus agrees in a low voice, hands pausing at the seams of her dress.

She’s reversed their positions in an instant, Klaus pressed up against the door with a surprised look on his face.

“Don’t you dare rip this dress.” She hisses at him, knowing his proclivity for destroying her clothes when he’s in this sort of mood. “I like this one.”

His low chuckle curls around her, a warm feeling in the bottom of her stomach as he turns her gently by the shoulders, a hot open mouthed kiss pressed to the side of her neck.

His hands on the zipper are like fire as he pulls it down slowly, fingers brushing over the exposed skin of her back as he pushes the dress from her shoulders.

It pools at her feet, and she hears his breath hitch in his throat as he runs a gentle hand down her back.

“I’ve missed this.” Klaus murmurs to her, walking her backwards towards his bed, both of them kicking off their shoes, Klaus shucking his socks as they go.

He grips her by the hips, easily lifting her up and tossing her onto the mattress, a giggle escaping her lips as Klaus’s gaze darkens.

“Come here.” She beckons to him as Klaus crawls between her knees, covering her body with his as he takes her into his arms.

The feeling is unfamiliar and familiar all at once, Klaus’ erection pressing into her core as she tangles her lips with his.

A soft moan escapes her as Klaus’ lips scorch a hot trail down her throat, face nuzzling between the valley of her breasts, stubble scratching against her sensitive skin.

“Pants off.” She orders after a momentary pause, Klaus chuckling as he does her bidding.

“A little eager aren’t we?” He asks her with an infuriating smile as he hooks long fingers into the waistband of her panties.

“We’ve got ten years to make up for.” She just breathes, watching as his face softens, hand coming up to cup her cheek delicately as he lines up his body with hers, cock nudging gently at her entrance.

She bends down to kiss him, rolling her hips in a gentle rhythm against his. Klaus’ hand traces down the front of her body, thumb pinpointing her clit with an unerring accuracy.

She shudders a little when he presses there, rhythm broken momentarily as she opens her mouth in a silent moan.

She can feel the tell tale build in her core, the ache becoming almost unbearable as she increases her rhythm, anchoring her hands on his shoulders as he begins to thrust up into her with a look of concentration on his face.

She falls apart in his arms, Klaus catching her, turning and pressing her down into the mattress as he continues to drive into her, the pleasure edging into pain at the sensitivity.

When he’s done he pulls her into the circle of his arms, a content exhale as he props one arm under his head, staring up at the ceiling.

They don’t have to say much. They never do in moments like this. But she feels like she has to say this.

“I love you.” She whispers into the skin of his chest, Klaus stiffening momentarily around her before he’s pressing a gentle kiss to the back of her hand, eyes brimming with emotion.

He doesn’t say it back but that’s okay. She knows that he’s felt this way about her for a long time, and she’s not going to get hung up on her insecurities like she used to when it came to him.

The moment is perfect, and she wouldn’t change it for the world.

“I hope you’ve got space in your wardrobe for all my clothes.” She voices out loud suddenly, propping herself up on her elbow to face him.

Klaus’ burst of startled laughter is like music to her hears.

On the lower levels of the house, Rebekah Mikaelson pours herself a victory drink, Kol glowering on the lounge opposite her as the fire crackles merrily away in the hearth.

“Do you concede?” She asks of Kol, who just glares at her, cracking his knuckles a little threateningly.

“I concede.”

But when it comes to that key combo many of us look for in a destination (for me, it’s cocktails, cuisine and a lush coastline without moving an inch) there’s a reason why more and more of us are fleeing halfway around the world to a destination once dominated by the rich and famous.

Thanks to the lavish 2018 wedding of Karl Stefanovic and Jasmine Yarborough, Los Cabos has never been as hot for Aussie travellers as it is right now.

Dishing up mouth-watering Mexican fare, turquoise blue waters and enough tequila to put you straight into holiday mode — Cabos has launched itself as being one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world.

For the Americans, the southern tip of Baja California landed on the map as a sought after holiday destination nearly 50 years ago. But for the rest of us now catching on, the five-star resorts, endless eateries and authentic desert-meets-beach experiences are keeping it on top of the list.

Having never explored the west coast of Mexico before, I’d only read about the sunny peninsular in glossy mags (thanks to lavish holiday pap snaps of George Clooney, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow and Justin Bieber frolicking in the Pacific).

But despite what I’d seen, I was pretty confident I knew what to expect from the “resort town to the Stars”.

Bikinis, booze and beaches.

But within 12 hours of arriving, this Mexican destination proved to be so much more than a sanctuary for Hollywood’s elite.

As we made our descent in to the local airport, which is tucked away in the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula, the tropical oasis felt far more authentic than any other spot I’d travelled to in the country.

As we made our way to our first stop before check-in, we were met by one of the ‘two brothers’ of Mexico’s west coast.

You see, Los Cabos combines two major towns along the peninsular: Cabos San Lucas (think “spring break”) and San Jose del Cabo (the more cultured of the pair).

The two parts of town, like siblings, are pretty polar opposite and serve as a playground for various demographics seeking a multitude of experiences.

San Jose was our first stop along the Pacific Coast towards our resort. Think art, architecture and an abundance of boutique shopping. With a total population of 69,788 inhabitants, this part of the peninsular felt somewhat more authentic than it’s slightly wilder sibling positioned just a 30 minute drive away.

Partying by night — and even a little during the day — Cabos San Lucas is like every spring break movie imaginable — and more.

Drinks, music and dancing — the town is, simply put, wild and free. It’s easy to get swept up in the commotion that spills from the clubs onto the kerb. But if you’re not so inclined, there are a few quieter bars by the marina.

But what both have in common is the beauty and accessibility from one experience to another that explains why tourists come time and time again.

When it comes to finding accommodation, the peninsular that stretches along the Sea of Cortez offers tourists everything from family resorts to couples only retreats and even super luxe villas in tune with the “celebs on vacay” status Los Cabos has become synonymous for.

Just a 2½-hour flight from Los Angeles, it’s a quick connection following a flight from Australia.

On a coastline where the rugged desert meets the blue waves of the Pacific, Los Cabos has a few standouts along the 32km seafront corridor.

I stayed at Solaz, one of the newest resorts in the region. This luxury accommodation has been transformed into a breathtaking architectural destination that has kept indigenous culture at the forefront of their design.

As soon as you walk into the marbled foyer and gaze out to the panoramic sea views, you’re instantly in holiday mode.

The complex is huge, with 128 rooms in total broken up by cactus-filled gardens and water features.

Each room is designed with local Mexican materials, like Huanacaxtle wood and bamboo, textured marble floors and wall sculptures.

But it’s the outside area where the real heritage lies.

Dotted around the property is 500-year-old cactus flanked by local shrubs and plunge pools.

The main pool serves truckloads of guac and mixes cocktails by the bucketload, and you don’t have to move a finger.

It’s the perfect combination of desert-meets-ocean, and easily sits on my list of best hotels ever.

TO EAT:

If there is one food I think I could live off for good, it would be a bowl of corn chips and a hefty serving of guac drenched in lime juice.

In Los Cabos — from the hotels to beachside bars — the food is aplenty and honestly puts any other Mexican fare I’d consumed elsewhere to shame.

But for a place where you spend most of your time in a bikini, it can be a challenging combination.

With balmy nights and warm days (Los Cabos receives next to no rain) most dining takes place under the stars.

One of the best dinners I experienced was by the clifftops that overlooked Chileno Bay Beach (which sits around halfway between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo).

The restaurant — which has won a string of awards — brings regional flavours to your table, where fresh seafood is cooked at your table. Don’t pass up on the BBQ octopus!

If you’re after a paddock-to-plate vibe, which gives off major The Farm Byron Bay vibes, you have to pay a visit to Flora Farms.

The 10-acre property is often frequented by George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio, and even hosted the lavish wedding of Maroon 5 frontman, Adam Levine.

Flora Farms is in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains in San Jose del Cabo, where the kitchen is all about handmade food using a multitude of ingredients from their farm. The property has an organic brewery, a bakery, accommodation on site and even a spa. But the main attraction would have to be the restaurant, which dishes up a modern twist on Mexican fare.

Founded by an American couple from Napa, it’s an Instagrammers dream — especially at sunset.

Probably the closest must-do stop if you’re staying in San Jose is the weekly Art Walk which offers visitors a complete culture fix.

Each Thursday night between November and June, you grab a glass of wine and meander around the thriving local art scene and small boutiques, taking in everything from street food to incredible architecture.

The event was established by the Gallery District Association in the hopes of drawing art lovers and tourists away from the Main Square and into the colour-filled backstreets located behind the church.

During the art walk, often galleries will have special events like an “artist in attendance” talks or openings of new exhibitions.

Make sure you stop to hydrate at La Lupita just off the main art walk drag — and maybe sneak in a late night taco too.

But if you feel like getting your heart racing — and taking a dip with the largest shark in the world isn’t quite to your liking — perhaps heading to the desert and exploring on horseback is.

Set among the cactus sits Cuadra San Francisco, a working ranch just off the Sea of Cortez.

Surrounded with brightly coloured stables and woven horse blankets, the ranch was founded in October 1994 by Francisco J Barrena.

As an actual working ranch training Spanish horses, the tours offered include a combination of private arena-based lessons or private trail rides through the desert hills.

It’s hot — and dusty — on the trails, but totally worth the trip. The sandy tracks wind up the mountains, and offering riders uninterrupted views of the peninsular below.
