The Checker Players (1975) by (my grandfather) Pontella Mason and James Voshell and a shot from The Wire season 1 episode 3 “The Buys”. I noticed this parallel on my second rewatch of The Wire. Given that the mural was located in Baltimore, and knowing the history of the creators of The Wire, its not a stretch to assume either David Simon or Ed Burns was familiar with the mural before its demolition. I have always been a fan of The Checker Players because to me it represents the responsibility of the black man to show the black boy the rules to “the game” i.e. LIFE. In the case of The Wire however, this is flipped. Although Dee teaches Wallace and Bodie the literal rules to the game their playing(and the rules to the drug game), It’s ultimately Dee who is playing the role of the student when the charm and naivete of Wallace makes Dee rethink his place in the drug game. Everything is a game and ALL THE PIECE MATTER.

Happy T-shirt Tuesday guys!😃 Thank you @flynerdapparel for this nostalgic and beautifully made T. I love love LOVE my #squadgoals print. It's inspired by A Different World. Do you guys remember that show? . Omg, I used to watch and think: they are so smart and fun! (There was also some fly natural, curly haired girls😍) The faces on this T are Rod and Dwayne. They had completely different personalities. Dwayne loved math and engineering. Ron was dedicated to being a great musician while also having a great entrepreneurial spirit. Differences is what brings us together. . My favorite thing is when a T shirt is well made but also has a powerful message behind it. This @flynerdapparel has both! . Mine is in urban grey and it's the type of fabric that I'll wear through all 4 seasons. I'm in a Men's size small. This T is inspiring us to continue being our authentic selves no matter what. The other day my brother and I went to a thrift store in Towson to look for sweaters or flared denims. I couldn’t find anything in my size but I honestly wasn’t expecting to anyway. My favorite thing about these hole in the wall thrift stores is how old are the pieces are, as a fashion enthusiast and a fan of history thrift stores are my favorite places to go. As a writer, walking through the isles and looking at the clothes felt like I was in a costume department for characters in my head. I wonder what bodies wore those clothes, if the fabric could talk I wonder what stories they could tell.
