Spreads & details from ‘An Atlas of Rare & Familiar Colour,’ a Staff Pick Holiday Gift 2019! Documenting the Harvard Art Museums' Forbes Pigment Collection, it begins with an epigraph taken from Yoko Ono: "If people want to make war they should make a color war, and paint each others' cities up in the night in pink and greens." Over the course of the next 220 beautifully-designed pages, it catalogues and describes a selection of the 2,500 rare pigments in this world-renowned color collection. Playful yet scholarly texts, outstanding still-life photography, artist quotations and a wonderful glossary make this an essential reference for artists and designers, as well as the perfect gift for anyone with exquisite visual taste. #pigment #holidaygiftbook @ateliereditions @harvardartmuseums #forbespigmentcollection #pigment #color https://www.instagram.com/p/B6D_rVzJzpP/?igshid=guvt8pbpqa3s

#Egyptianblue on display with some samples from the #ForbesPigmentCollection at the @harvardartmuseums . Used in ancient Egypt for thousands of years, it is considered the first synthetic pigment and the formula to make it was lost (or forgotten) by the time of the Roman Empire. . . There is a theory out there that #blue didn’t exist at all in the distant past as there is no mention of it in Ancient Greek text (“wine dark sea” in the Odyssey is said to be the closest). Obviously the Egyptians felt differently, and the blue they created- technically calcium copper silicate, dates back as far as 3250 BC. . . How the Egyptians made it is not exactly known but the color was “re-discovered” around 1815 by combing several substances at high heat for several hours, grinding the result into a fine paste and heating the mixture again for another hour. The process is somewhat exact- too hot and the mixture becomes unstable, too much of one ingredient and the result is a green. #art #artstagram #color #pigments #historygram (at Harvard Art Museums) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0M_DfBFk6L/?igshid=108hov4onzlt6

A deadly shade of green- developed in 1814 from arsenic & oxidized copper (#verdigris) #EmeraldGreen would be immediately popular, but also prove deadly to those who wore, ate or used the hue in wallpaper design. A favorite color of Cezanne, it may have contributed to his early demise and similar copper-arsenic greens are believed to have sickened Napoleon who lived a room of his favorite bright green while in exile in St Helena. Sample on view as part of #ForbesPigmentCollection at the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge #color #green #artmuseum #instahistory (at Harvard Art Museums)
