Roleswap Hashira and Their Fighting Styles
Managi - Water Pillar
It would surprise people to know that despite his flamboyant nature, Managi uses the most common breathing style with a basic katana.
Managi would roll his eyes at their confusion and occasional derision, regarding Water Breathing as the most beautiful of the Breathing styles, and staying ever loyal to his roots as a Swordsmith
And despite not being the best swordsmith, he forges his own swords whenever the opputunity arises, and they've served him faithfully and reliably.
Michikatsu - Moon Pillar
The Tsugikuni clan has maintained and refined Moon Breathing, honing it to the razor's edge, to the point that it is nearly impossible for someone not within the clan to wield it to its full effectiveness.
Though its sister base Styles (Save Stone) are performed with regular Katanas, over the centuries the Tsugikunis have found great success with longer weaponry, modifying the style for odachis, naginatas, nagamakis and Yaris, emphasizing precise footwork and hand placement in order to keep Demons at range.
Further expanding this range are the Trailing Stars, thin nichirin wires meant to rend demon flesh.
The Tsugikunis manage all of these through a technique known as the Empty Self, a sensory and/or extra sensory ability that allows them to perceive everything in a radius determined by the trailing stars wires (basically a watered down Transparent World)
Michikatsu has mastered all of them, wielding his modified naginata with brutal precision, amplified by the Trailing Stars and Empty Self.
Nakime - Sound Pillar
In contrast to Tengen, Nakime's Sound Breathing thrives on deliberate discord, flitting between an almost serene harmony characteristic of Flower Breathing, and rapid, frenzied strikes at home in Thunder Breathing.
Helping this along is a dao like blade and a straight edged tanto, linked by a chain equally suited for stabbing and slashing, uniquely designed to give off a discordant wail intolerant to demons with each swing.
But if silence is needed, or Nakime simply finds herself in a bind, she makes do with a heavy knife and her nichirin edged, wisteria rosined shamisen bachi.
Hakuji - Firework Pillar
Hakuji does not fight with a sword, in fact he seems disdainful of the very idea. Instead he fights with fists, legs, elbows and knees, helped along by clawed nichirin steel gauntlets and boots, studded with spikes and capped off by katar like blades that can spring out from each device, piercing the spinal cord between one blade becomes three, separating a Demon's head from its body.
If his Firework Breathing can be traced to any one of the classical styles, it might be found in the explosive strikes of Flame Breathing, and the circular defenses of Water Breathing , adopted out of necessity, but Hakuji's beloved Soryu Style still shines true.
Supplementing all of this is a physique similar to canon Mitsuri's, and a preternatural "battle sense" capable of sensing hostility and bloodlust.
Zohakuten - Emotion Pillar
When first picking up the sword, Zohakuten first adopted Flame Breathing.
But the varying personalities within his mind seemed to take to different styles, including Lightning Breathing, Wind Breathing, Water Breathing and Flower Breathing.
Through the odd symbiosis of these personalities, and the Breathing Styles they've taken to, Zohakuten has stitched together a style that Hashira Tsugikuni seems to recognize from his family scrolls.
Doma - Snow Pillar
When Doma first joined the Slayers, he took to Water Breathing, but soon found it to be...insufficient for his purposes.
Initially adopting a pair of tachi in place of the traditional katana, his self concocted Snow Breathing combined the fluidity of Water Breathing with the relentless offense of Wind, even adding elements of Mist Breathing as he again switched from his tachi to a pair of oversized, razor sharp fans wielded as either shortswords or clubs, supplemented with Wisteria laced throwing daggers.
Also unique to him is a unique lack of presence or intent, described by Hashira Hakuji as invisible in his battle sense, leaving him a dangerously unpredictable opponent in combat.
Gyutaro/Yuji - Poison Pillar
Despite his supposed musculature, Yuji's malnutrition left him bereft of much of the strength necessary to behead demons. While possible, it is much too strenuous to be viable for him.
Instead he uses a series of increasingly potent poisons, delivered via a pair of specially made, chained together kama, capable of injecting his concoctions through the edges and points of his scythes, and pop up blades located in the handles.
Inspired by Doma, Yuji wields these kama with his Poison Breathing, a viscous style combining the arcing blows of Stone Breathing and the relentless offense of Wind Breathing, intent on shredding tendons and delivering a death of a thousand cuts.
Daki/Ume - Ribbon Pillar
Initially taking to Flower Breathing, Daki found the style too stifling.
Instead, she created Ribbon Breathing, combining the agility of Flower Breathing with her incredible flexibility and elements of Mist Breathing, luring in opponents with the hypnotic motion of her whip like sword before cutting them to ribbons.
Kaigaku - Storm Pillar
It frustrated Kaigaku to no end that he could not master Thunder Breathing to the extent required to inherit his master's position as Thunder Pillar, but nonetheless, he persevered.
He would utilize elements of Water Breathing to create his Storm Breathing, a style characterized by explosive speed and fluid motions.

What better gift to deliver if not one that makes a gentle note of one's identity? A dove figurine sculpted from two magnificent materials: a chunk of gleaming palladium and a shard of shimmering silvergrace, both belonging to the soils of none other but the Steppe.
The palladium was solid and dense, with a reflective sheen that caught the light and drew the eye. The silvergrace was delicate and ethereal, with veins of the precious metal running through the rock like streams of moonlight. Together, these two materials formed a breathtaking contrast, creating a figurine that was both strong and graceful, robust and delicate. The figurine was also imbued with a sense of movement and grace. The wings were outstretched, as if the bird is about to take flight, and the curves and angles of the form were perfectly balanced, giving the figurine a sense of weightlessness and harmony.
It might have been a cliche present. However, it's a symbol of the beauty and strength that can be found in the most unexpected combinations. One such as them.
Happy Valentione's, Dove!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are, through and above most everything else, a blacksmith who mines their own materials. They can tell from the gleam, from the tiniest shifts in hue, that these materials were of the Steppe. The workmanship, too, drew their interest and admiration. They're a craftsperson who takes pride in their work, and that same pride and skill is on display here.
"It's beautiful."
The confirmation of self wasn't lost on them, either; the gentle meaning a welcome reminder. A little smirk twisted their lips as their gaze turned to Meteor again and they carefully set the little dove aside, pulling out their own gift - to any Othard native, the long, wide, flat box was distinctive, even with the flowing loose silk wrapped around it. The outside silk is plainly dyed, a blue to match Meteor's eyes almost alarmingly precisely. Inside is a tanto knife atop a plain cedar box, and inside the box is a carefully folded kimono. It's tastefully dyed, a dark brown background with pale blue pin striping traveling the length of it. An obi and cording have been supplied with it, the cording precisely matched to the knife - one they've forged themself, iron and bomb ash sourced with their own hands as well. The folded pattern makes it as beautiful as it is deadly.
"Not quite a traditional gift, by any means, but I do hope it's to your liking."

Book Review: Forging Japanese Knives for Beginners
Ernst G. Siebeneicher and Jurgen Rosinski. Forging Japanese Knives for Beginners. Atglen PA: Schiffer, 2013. ISBN 978-0-7643-4556-2.
While it seems odd for a book originally in German to be discussing the smithing of Japanese knives, this is an excellent little book on the subject beginning with smelting the iron and finishing with two nice examples of different traditional Japanese knives -- a tanto and a hocho.
Following a short historical introduction, Siebeneicher and Rosinski describe the construction and operation of a bloomery furnace and the selection of steel from the resulting bloom. This is then followed by chapters on the tanto and hocho, and discussion of care of the resulting blades, safety, and the tools used.
All and all, it’s a nice overview of the process, starting earlier than most smiths do. My one quibble with the text is that while the products are very Japanese, the processes are basically European. Since the text, at least in this edition, is aimed at English-speakers (and the original was aimed at a German audience), this isn’t a bad choice. As a result of that choice, most of the processes are ones that as an American smith are either already in my skill set or not far from them.
This allows the focus of the work to be on what is being forged, and it’s clear that the authors have a reasonable familiarity with both the techniques of a (European) smith and with the traditional Japanese blades.
The section on the tanto covers many of the techniques that go into the larger weapons, including a brief discussion of steel composition and differential hardening (the latter of which produces the distinctive hamon). The fittings are also described, including the construction of the habaki and fitting of the handle and sheath (although the subject of wrapping the handle is omitted).
The second knife project is a Japanese kitchen knife, and here the discussion includes background on the different types of kitchen knives and some nice tidbits about Japanese-style smithwork, including how a hard steel edge is added to a mild steel body. The authors also include a discussion of traditional hocho handles and sharpening the kitchen knife.
In a way, the title of this book is a little misleading; I don’t think a complete novice could take this book and produce the knives described without quite a bit of trial and error. Someone wanting to learn about Japanese smithwork may be a little disappointed, although there is enough here to be worth the reading. But even a modestly competent smith will find enough here to give them a nice set of projects to work on. I liked the book, and have pulled it out several times to re-read sections. If you’re a European-style smith with an interest in expanding your repertoire, this is a very nice little book.

Rural Wanderer Argentina
English and Spanish description under read more!
English
For those who don't know her, here's a little insight on her and this particular picture!
Argentina is a very large country with a not so large population, which is very condensed in a few major cities, so the rest of the land consists of rural areas and wild nature. Moreso before the large influxes of immigration, when the country was practically empty.
This outfit is sort of what Argentina dressed like around the mid-late 19th century when she wandered on her lands, it's meant to be a mix of gaucho clothes and paisana dress (mainly for the skirt). It's quite humble and simple, since our traditional costumes aren't really... detailed or original, they're mainly generic clothes affordable for the masses, which are very common amongst American and European regions.
When traveling around her rural lands, she always kept a facón (the knife) with her, which was useful for multiple things such as hunting and self-defense, among other manual tasks. Facones can vary in length and style, but I chose a version that seemed to be the most common, they're basically big knives or small swords.
Berets weren't that common back then but it looked prettier than a hat lol
So, when she wasn't being bossed around or interacting with other countries, she would take long journeys by herself, to check on her provinces and her people. She's used to being pretty independent and alone, although she hates the loneliness of it. Those long periods of hardships in the isolated lands of her country helped her forge a tough and resilient character, which would be softened much later when she made new friendships with other countries.
